Glenn Hughes comments on California Breed split

Glenn Hughes has issued his first public comments on the breakup of California Breed.

The former Deep Purple bassist formed the group in 2013 with Jason Bonham – from the ashes of supergroup Black Country Communion - and guitarist Andrew Watt, who revealed last week that the band had called it quits.

The group released their self-titled debut last May, but Bonham soon bailed due to scheduling commitments and was replaced by Queens Of The Stone Age/Eagles Of Death Metal drummer Joey Castillo.

California Breed played an extensive fall tour of North America and Europe and played their final show at Planet Rockstock in Wales on December 5.

“Good morning,” began Hughes in a Facebook post. “On June 2 Jason left California Breed. We had just gone on sale with tickets for the USA and Europe tours. I felt it necessary to commit to these shows, as we had recorded an album and we needed to play and promote our work. Joey C came in and played drums, and helped us out on tour , and I am supremely grateful for this.”

“What I couldn't commit to was a second album,” he continued. “Cali Breed was Jason, Andrew and myself, and there was no way moving forward without all 3 original members.”

“Over the past 4 decades I have built a very loving and loyal fan base, where I know most of you, through touring, signing autographs for all, or on social networks, where I see your photographs or avatar, and answer you, in whatever you wish to ask or share with me. Those of you who have met me, or know me, know that I deeply care about LIFE...”

Hughes then issued an update on his plans moving forward.

“I am currently working on 3 projects, 2 musical & one movie,” he explained. “I will give more details as I move forward.”

“This is a loving ... And safe Place. The Canvas of my LIFE is vast ...and I go ...where my spirit.. Leads me .. Big love to all my fans, friends and GOLDEN ones across our Planet ...In my world LOVE is the answer .. Remember this.”

California Breed call it quits

California Breed – the band formed in 2013 by Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham and guitarist Andrew Watt – have called it quits.

Watt made the announcement via Facebook, writing, “To the California Breed fans here, I put everything I had into this band. All I can say is I was in it for the long haul.”

“I have a lot of new music for you guys...going to be announcing my plans soon.”

“I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you supporting us, buying our music, coming to our shows,” he adds. “This is not the end...it is truly the beginning...cannot wait to continue the quest to bring rock n roll back to the people that are hungry for it. What an amazing learning experience for me here and introduction to an amazing world of people and fans that share love for the same thing.”

Hughes and Bonham formed California Breed with Watt from the ashes of supergroup Black Country Communion, which fell apart over Joe Bonamassa’s yearly solo touring schedule.

The band released their self-titled debut album last May, but Bonham bailed in August due to scheduling commitments and was replaced by Queens Of The Stone Age/Eagles Of Death Metal drummer Joey Castillo.

California Breed played an extensive fall tour of North America and Europe and performed their final show at Planet Rockstock in Wales on December 5.

“We’re just excited to play live, to tour, to be in front of and with our fans,” says Hughes. “We’re very proud of our debut record and we can’t wait to share it, live and loud, with you.”

California Breed will close out the run supporting Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators on their five UK arena dates.

Produced by Dave Cobb (Jamey Johnson, Rival Sons, Shooter Jennings), “California Breed” was recorded at Cobb's Nashville studio and features equal co-writing credits among the three-man lineup.

"I'd gotten into Dave's work via the Rival Sons, who I know and really love, “ explains Hughes. “But Dave has done a lot of great stuff. That whole Nashville trip which Dave is a part of. Well, me and Jason don't want to sound like anyone else, we already sound like ourselves, but we felt we needed some fresh energy — and Dave absolutely brought it."

California Breed producer talks about Glenn Hughes’ career

California Breed producer Dave Cobb talks about singer/bassist Glenn Hughes’ music history in the latest behind the scenes video package about the making of the band’s self-titled debut album, due May 20.

“I’ve known about Glenn from the Trapeze stuff,” says Cobb of the former Deep Purple rocker. “My favorite era of music has always been maybe ‘65 to ‘73 and he was there. It was crazy to hear the stories: he knew my favorite bands, he was hanging around them, he played all the legendary places and recorded in legendary studios. I mean, God, you could make a freakin’ reality show on that guy and the things he’s been through and done and who he is now. It’s amazing.”

Hughes lengthy rock resume includes stints in Trapeze, Deep Purple, Hughes/Thrall, Gary Moore, and others.

California Breed is a new band formed by Hughes and Jason Bonham from the ashes of supergroup Black Country Communion; the pair are joined by guitarist Andrew Watt in the lineup.

“California Breed” was recorded at Cobb's Nashville studio and features equal co-writing credits among the three-man lineup.
