Van Halen expand 5150 for 40th anniversary reissue

Van Halen will release an expanded edition of their 1986 album, “5150”, next month to mark its 40th anniversary.

The band’s seventh studio set was their first with singer Sammy Hagar, who joined the lineup following the departure of David Lee Roth.

“5150” marked the band’s first No. 1 album with hits like “Why Can’t This Be Love,” “Dreams,” and “Best Of Both Worlds”, and continued their streak of multi-Platinum releases.

Due on March 27 via Rhino Records, the LP/3CD/Blu-ray collection includes the 1986 album remastered directly from the original master tapes, overseen by the band’s longtime engineer Donn Landee. Additionally, an Amazon-exclusive green vinyl version will be available the same day.

The set also introduces more than 90 minutes of previously unreleased live recordings from the band’s August 27, 1986, concert at New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New Haven, Connecticut. These are joined by a selection of rare 7” single edits and extended 12” versions. The Blu-ray includes a new high-definition upgrade of "Live Without a Net", Van Halen’s double-Platinum 1986 concert video that was also recorded that same August night in New Haven, along with promotional videos for “Dreams” and “Why Can’t This Be Love.”

Standalone versions of 5150 featuring the remastered album and rarities will also be available the same day as a 2CD set or a 2LP on black vinyl.

Van Halen are previewing the reissue with the live version of “Summer Nights” from the New Haven show, along with the HD remastered video.

Rock News Artist Of The Year No. 9: DAVID LEE ROTH

As part of the 2025 hennemusic Rock News Awards, the daily news site is counting down the Top 10 Rock News Artists of the past year.

Finalists for the 16th annual hennemusic Rock News Awards are chosen by readers: the Rock News Story Of The Year is determined by page views, while the Rock News Artist Of The Year is based on the combined total page views of the top 50 hennemusic rock news stories of the past twelve months.

The 2025 hennemusic Rock News Awards winners will be announced on Wednesday, December 24.

2025 Rock News Artist Of The Year – Top 10

10 – GUNS N’ ROSES

Rock News Artist of The Year No. 9 – DAVID LEE ROTH

David Lee Roth began 2025 with news that he would be releasing a new box set, “The Warner Recordings 1985-1994”, in February via Rhino Records.

The package includes the first five solo releases by the rocker following his departure from Van Halen and the release of the EP “Crazy From The Heat.” The set was an immediate success thanks to the lead single and cover of the Beach Boys’ classic, “California Girls” – which scored Roth a US Top 3 hit – as well as a series of videos from the set earning high rotation in the MTV years.

Roth’s success continued as 1986’s “Eat ‘Em And Smile” hit the US Top 10 with a band lineup featuring guitarist Steve Vai, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Greg Bissonette.

1988 saw the platinum “Skyscraper” return Roth to the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, elevated by “Just Like Paradise”, after which he kicked off the ‘90s with the gold-selling “A Little Ain’t Enough” in 1991 and, later, “Your Filthy Little Mouth” in 1994.

In May, Roth announced dates for a US tour; at the time, the rocker detailed the series after playing his first full solo concert in more than five years at the M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, MD.

The mid-summer trek would launch July 22 in Paso Robles, CA, with shows wrapping up in Napa, CA on September 14.

Roth – who previously announced in late 2021 that he would retire from music in early 2022 – hinted at a change in his active status several months later after delivering a private performance in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in May of that year.

Alex Van Halen to publish new Van Halen book

Alex Van Halen will publish a new Van Halen book detailing an official chronicle of the band's early years.

To be released via Genesis Publications, the project features a dynamic blend of iconic photography alongside rare and never-before-seen images, and with exclusive access to his private archives, "Van Halen" (working title) offers a personally guided tour through the band's legendary career.

Signed, written and curated by Alex Van Halen, this authorized publication opens the Van Halen family archive for the first time.

The years 1978-1984 are explored through correspondence, tour memorabilia, album artwork, press material, musical equipment, unpublished photographs and much more - charting the brothers' journey from childhood and the band's formation to their debut and meteoric rise.

To be published as a signed limited edition book boxed set, register interest today at VanHalenAnthology.com to be among the first to hear more.

Alex published his first book, "Brothers", in 2024; the set shared the drummer's family story with a focus on his history growing up with his younger sibling; Eddie passed away in 2020 at the age of 65 from a stroke and other issues following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Van Halen expand Balance for 30th anniversary reissue

Van Halen will release an expanded edition of their 1995 album, “Balance”, to mark the project’s 30th anniversary.

Due August 15, “Balance (Expanded Edition)” will be available as a 2LP/2CD/Blu-ray deluxe set including the original album – remastered for 2023’s “The Collection II” – along with a selection of audio and video rarities; the package also contains several unreleased live recordings from the Balance Tour.

“Balance (Expanded Edition)” pulls together a selection of non-album tracks from the period, including the B-side “Crossing Over,” along with “Humans Being” and “Respect the Wind” from the Twister soundtrack; also featured are eight performances from the band’s 1995 Wembley Stadium appearance, which was broadcast by the BBC.

The Blu-ray features several restored promo videos, including “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You,” “Amsterdam,” and “Not Enough.”

Standalone versions of “Balance” will also be available on August 15, including a 2CD set with the album and rarities, and a 2LP black vinyl and 2LP orange vinyl pressing that presents the full album on vinyl for the first time in 30 years. Here, the complete album spans three sides, for optimal audio quality, with a Balance-era etching on the fourth.

Originally released on January 24, 1995, "Balance" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was certified triple Platinum by the RIAA. The album produced rock radio hits like “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You” and “Don’t Tell Me (What Love Can Do),” and introduced deeper cuts like “Big Fat Money” and “Aftershock.” It marked the final studio album recorded by the lineup of Sammy Hagar, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Michael Anthony.

Van Halen are previewing the newly-announced project with a previously-unreleased live clip of “The Seventh Seal,” filmed at the Target Center in Minneapolis in July 1995.

Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020 at the age of 65 from a stroke and other issues following a lengthy battle with cancer.

David Lee Roth shares new song Forgiveness

David Lee Roth is sharing a new song entitled “Forgiveness.”

The rocker presents an acoustic take of the tune in his 2024 year-end posting, which follows a different vibe from a version he issued last February that saw Roth mashup his lyrics and melody with Taylor Swift’s “Lavender Haze” under the title “Lavender Forgiveness.”

The Van Halen icon – who continues to post new content on a random basis – previously closed out 2023 with an original seasonal holiday song named “Talking Christmas Blues.”

Amongst his contributions are new takes on the Tommy Tutone classic, “867-5309/Jenny”, and the Gerry Rafferty hit “Baker Street.”

Roth was recently named the No. 3 Rock News Artist Of The Year as part of the 2024 hennemusic Rock News Awards, where he also delivered the No. 6 Rock News Story Of The Year.

Stream final song written by Alex and Eddie Van Halen

Alex Van Halen is offering free downloads of "Unfinished", the last song he wrote with Eddie Van Halen.

Now available for download at Van-Halen.com and streamed below, the song is featured as part of “Brothers”, Alex’s newly-published memoir via HarperCollins.

The project sees the iconic drummer share his personal story of family, friendship, music, and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and bandmate.

Told with acclaimed New Yorker writer Ariel Levy, “Brothers” is seventy-year-old drummer Alex's love letter to his younger brother, Edward (Maybe "Ed," but never "Eddie"), written while still mourning his untimely death.

"I was with him from day one," Alex writes. "We shared the experience of coming to this country and figuring out how to fit in. We shared a record player, an 800-square-foot house, a mom and dad, and a work ethic. Later, we shared the back of a tour bus, alcoholism, the experience of becoming famous, of becoming fathers and uncles, and of spending more hours in the studio than I've spent doing anything else in this life. We shared a depth of understanding that most people can only hope to achieve in a lifetime.”

Eddie passed away in 2020 at the age of 65 from a stroke and other issues following a lengthy battle with cancer.

While Edward was rewriting guitar history, Rosen became a close and trusted ally of the rocker; among his published works are three lead features for Guitar World magazine that are recognized as pivotal pieces on the iconic guitarist.

“There is no other book on Edward out there like mine,” says Rosen. “I had a front-row seat to his life and he told me things he never told another journalist. I wanted to write as honest and as insightful a book as I possible could and I believe I've done that. I wrote about spending time in my Hollywood Hills pad while Edward noodled on guitar; attending NAMM Shows with him; introducing him to Ritchie Blackmore, Billy Gibbons and Les Paul; buying a set of guitar strings for him; jamming with him; and getting high with him.”

Through the years, Van Halen famously tinkered with his equipment – from guitars to amplifiers, effects, and more – in an attempt to translate and communicate the sounds he heard in his head.

“I chose that title, Tonechaser, because Edward once described himself in that way,” Rosen explains. “I thought it was such a beautiful, fragile, and poignant word for him to use in his pursuit of the ever-elusive Brown Sound. I also thought it worked on another level in terms of the ‘tone’ of his life and being a guitar player, bandmember, husband, father, and icon.

“I had never heard Edward ever use that phrase anywhere else and, in fact, after interviewing hundreds and hundreds of guitar players, I've never heard one of them ever use that word to describe what they do.”

In addition to the book, Rosen has also just released “Tonechaser: The Audiobook”, which includes 30 hours of self-narration as well as hours and hours of the original archival interviews Rosen conducted with Van Halen many decades ago.

With more than 80 million albums sold worldwide, Van Halen were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007; five years after the band performed their final concert at the Hollywood Bowl in October of 2015, Edward passed away in 2020 at the age of 65 from a stroke and other issues following a lengthy battle with cancer.

New video surfaces for David Lee Roth cover of Gerry Rafferty classic Baker Street

A new video featuring David Lee Roth’s cover of the 1978 Gerry Rafferty hit, “Baker Street”, has surfaced online.

The clip was created by animator Ramses Rios, as part of his David Lee Roth Tribute Channel, The Mojo Dojo.

"If you know by now how much I love that old red bomb of Dave’s, I had to add her to this video,” says Rios. “Featuring Daves’s 51’ Merc, illustrated by me. With everything going on in the world today, we all need a little David Lee Roth in our lives to make things better. Enjoy!"

Roth originally shared a portion of his version of Rafferty’s worldwide Top 5 hit in his 2002 video collection, “No Holds Bar-B-Que”, and he later posted the full song in a 2016 episode of “The Roth Show.”
