Mastodon announce new album and release Snakes For Dinner single

Mastodon will issue their long-awaited new album, "Marrow Deep", on August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings.

The news is paired with the release of a new single, "Snakes For Dinner", featuring a guest vocal appearance by Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, who also appears in the accompanying music video.

Five years on from the expansive "Hushed And Grim", "Marrow Deep" documents founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher emerging from years of personal upheaval with a renewed sense of purpose and reinvigorated drive. Inspired by the Three Fates of Greek mythology and the fragile threads connecting life, loss, and destiny, "Marrow Deep" channels the intense personal experiences of the intervening years into some of the most expansive, adventurous, and emotionally resonant music of the band's storied career.

The album marks the band's first full-length to feature guitarist Nick Johnston alongside significant contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. "Marrow Deep" was co-produced by Mastodon at the band's own West End Sound in Atlanta with Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX) and Kurt Ballou (High On Fire, Converge), was mixed by Andrew Scheps (Adele, Black Sabbath, Metallica), and includes a staggering roster of guests to be revealed soon.

The new single, "Snakes For Dinner" (which follows on the heels of last month's "Your Ghost Again"), is an emotionally charged epic featuring Josh Homme's first appearance on a Mastodon recording since his contribution to "Colony Of Birchmen" on 2006's "Blood Mountain."

"Bill, Brann and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we've got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us," says Troy Sanders. "That's a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It's reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we're united, and excited to get to work. And we're thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record."

Mastodon will celebrate the "Marrow Deep" release with the upcoming "The Poisonous Weapons Tour", a nationwide run of dates with support from Deafheaven and Alcest, which will open September 16 in Orlando, FL.

Mastodon are streaming a live version of their current single, “Your Ghost Again”, as performed on their European tour.

Produced by Patrik Berger (Taylor Swift, Robyn) and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, the song is the first piece of new Mastodon music to be released since the death of co-founding guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, who departed the lineup in March 2025 and passed away in a motorcycle accident five months later.

"'Your Ghost Again' is about when you lose somebody that's close to you that you existed with for most of your life," says drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. "When we were in the studio recording, I kept seeing Brent. I'd see him on my right holding the guitar because that's where he'd usually be. It's the same with my mom: I keep seeing her. I was just singing about what I was seeing, and I was seeing ghosts.”

“Your Ghost Again” is the first single from the band's upcoming ninth studio album, which will follow 2021’s “Hushed And Grim.”

Mastodon will launch a fall tour of North America in September.

Mastodon have released “Your Ghost Again”, as the first single from the band's upcoming ninth studio album, due later in the year.

Produced by Patrik Berger (Taylor Swift, Robyn) and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, the song is the first piece of new Mastodon music to be released since the death of co-founding guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, who departed the lineup in March 2025 and passed away in a motorcycle accident five months later.

"'Your Ghost Again' is about when you lose somebody that's close to you that you existed with for most of your life," says drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. The song is "about being in those familiar places you used to be with people, which for us is in the studio. I just kept seeing [Brent] out of the corner of my eye, where he would normally be with his guitar. It's about that: your mind plays tricks on you, especially so soon after someone dies and you're in the places where they always were. You just see them."

"My portion of the song, lyrically, is all about Brent, and for Brent," adds bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders. "The bridge lyrics are two lines of pure gratitude towards Brent. It's all the gifts from you, now you can take them back where you must go, meaning you came into my life, you exposed me to things that blew my mind, together we conquered thousands of stages around the world, had magical moments that we can never repeat again, but all the beauty that you brought it still remains, always will, and it's just a line of gratitude because that's important that we include Brent."

Mastodon have issued eight studio albums to date; their latest is 2021’s “Hushed And Grim.”

Former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds killed in traffic accident

Former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds was killed at the age of 51 in a traffic accident in Atlanta, GA on August 20.

According to an incident report by the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded to an accident at the intersection of Memorial Dr. SE and Boulevard SE at approximately 11:35 p.m.

"Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male who was involved in the collision," the police said. "The male appeared to be operating a Harley Davidson during the time of collision. Medical personnel pronounced the male deceased. The other driver involved, a female who occupied a BMW SUV remained on scene. The APD Accident Investigations Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances. Preliminary investigation indicates the male was traveling West on Boulevard. The female operating the BMW SUV failed to yield while turning left and collided into the male victim who was operating the Harley Davidson. The investigation remains active at this time."

“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident,” shared Mastodon. “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent.”

Mastodon – who won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2018 for its “Emperor Of Sand” track, “Sultan’s Curse” – has issued eight studio albums to date; their latest is 2021’s “Hushed And Grim.”

The group’s most recent release is the standalone 2024 single, “Floods Of Triton”, a collaboration with Lamb Of God.

In March, Mastodon revealed that the band and Hinds had "mutually decided to part ways" after "25 monumental years together."

Mastodon open Black Sabbath farewell show with Supernaut cover

Mastodon opened the Black Sabbath farewell show, “Back To The Beginning”, at Birmingham’s Villa Park on July 5, and fan-filmed video has surfaced online.

The Atlanta rocker delivered “Black Tongue” and “Blood And Thunder” before being joined by Gojira's Mario Duplantier, Slipknot's Eloy Casagrande and Tool's Danny Carey for a cover of Sabbath’s classic track, “Supernaut."

The song – which originally appeared on the UK group’s 1972 album, “Vol. 4” – marked the first cover song of the event, which celebrated the careers of both Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne with tributes and farewell performances.

Among the lineup of guest artists included sets by Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool and Pantera.

Mastodon part ways with guitarist Brent Hinds

Atlanta rockers Mastodon have parted ways with guitarist Brent Hinds.

“Friends and Fans, After 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways,” says the band. “We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors. We are still very inspired and excited to show up for fans in this next chapter of Mastodon. As we move forward, all 2025 touring plans will remain intact. We look forward to seeing you on the road.”

Prior to this announcement, Mastodon had essentially maintained the band’s original lineup of Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher, bassist Troy Sanders and drummer Brann Dailor since its formation in 2000, save for another singer in their first few months.

Mastodon – who won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2018 for its “Emperor Of Sand” track, “Sultan’s Curse” – has issued eight studio albums to date; their latest is 2021’s “Hushed And Grim.”

The group’s most recent release is the standalone 2024 single, “Floods Of Triton”, a collaboration with Lamb Of God.

Mastodon is scheduled to return to the stage at the Tool Live in the Sand 2025 event in the Dominican Republic on March 9; in early May, the group will appear at Columbus, OH’s Sonic Temple Art & Music Festival 2025 before launching The Infinite Arc tour with Coheed And Cambria, and guests Periphery.

Mastodon and Gojira announce co-headlining North American tour

Mastodon and Gojira have announced dates for a 2023 co-headlining tour of North America.

“The Mega-Monsters Tour” will see the bands taking over arenas and amphitheaters throughout the spring and summer, alternating closing sets each night.

The spring leg of the series kicks off at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, OR on April 18, and runs until May 11; a late summer trek serves as a second leg that runs August 9 through September 2; special guest Lorna Shore serves as direct support on all dates.

Fan pre-sales for tickets begin Wednesday, January 18 at 10 AM local time and include both Mastodon and Gojira artist pre-sales, with general public tickets going on sale Friday, January 20 at 10 AM local time.

Mastodon will hit the road in support of their critically-acclaimed ninth studio album, 2021’s "Hushed And Grim", while Gojira are out supporting their seventh full-length album, "Fortitude", which picked up a 2022 Grammy Award nomination in the category of Best Metal Performance for the track, "Amazonia."

The 90-minute project – which chronicles the Atlanta band’s critically-acclaimed 9th studio album – is an intimate look at the group’s creative process, which was largely influenced by the untimely death of their longtime friend and manager, Nick John, who passed away while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2018.

The film also intertwines comedic skits that showcase the band’s lighter, more humorous, dynamic.

Upon its release last fall, “Hushed And Grim” debuted at No. 20 on the US Billboard 200; the set features 15 songs that survey sonic landscapes of rock, psychedelia, punk, metal, alternative, and prog while maintaining the group’s strong musical identity.

Mastodon will join Ghost and Spiritbox on a North American tour that will open in San Diego, CA on August 26.

Mastodon are streaming an acoustic version of their “Hushed And Grim” track, “Teardrinker.”

The new take on the project’s second single features lead vocals by drummer Brann Dailor, with keyboards handled by Joao Nogueira, who will join the group’s live lineup for a 2022 tour.

Mastodon will return to live action next month when they return to the road with Opeth for the second leg of a co-headlining North American tour.

The 2021 double album “Hushed And Grim” earned the band a nomination for a 2022 Grammy Award in the Best Metal Performance category, where it is being recognized alongside tracks by Deftones, Dream Theater, Gojira, and Rob Zombie.

The 2022 Grammy nomination is the Atlanta, GA’ outfit’s sixth overall and fifth in the category over the years; they previously won Best Metal Performance in 2018 for their “Emperor Of Sand” track, “Sultan’s Curse.”

The 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 3.

Mastodon and Swedish rockers Opeth have announced dates for the second leg of a co-headlining North American tour.

Following a late 2021 series by the pair, the three-week spring series will open in Montreal, QC on April 21.

”We’re excited to come back to North America for the second leg of shows together with our ‘brothers from other mothers’ in Mastodon,” says Opeth mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt. “And… hello, Canada! It’s been too long, we know! We’ll soon dust off the ole guitars etc. and get in shape for this run.

"The last tour was quite splendid; the only downside being the restrictions. We don’t know for sure how it’s going to pan out this time around, but we’re hoping for a bit more freedom to move around. Mastodon have been named a finalist in the Best Metal Performance category at the upcoming 2022 Grammy Awards.

“Pushing The Tides” – the lead single from the band’s newly-released “Hushed And Grim” album – is one of five songs featured in the running for the honor, which will be announced during the 64th Grammy ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA on January 31.

Mastodon‘s work is being recognized alongside tracks by Deftones, Dream Theater, Gojira, and Rob Zombie.

The 2022 Grammy nomination is the Atlanta, GA’ outfit’s sixth overall and fifth in the category over the years; they previously won Best Metal Performance in 2018 for their “Emperor Of Sand” track, “Sultan’s Curse.”

Mastodon have scored a US Top 20 debut with their latest album, “Hushed And Grim.”

The band enter the Billboard 200 at No. 20 with their eighth studio set, which was recorded with producer David Bottrill in their hometown of Atlanta, GA.

Introduced with the lead track, “Pushing The Tides”, the album was created during a period following the passing of longtime manager, Nick John, while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2018; as a result, an atmosphere of very real loss, loneliness, and longing permeates through the album as they musically say goodbye to their old friend and confidant.

"Essentially, to be brief, [the tree] is an afterlife mythology that when you pass away, your spirit goes into the heart of a tree and then experiences all the pillars of your in successions of the seasons that the tree experiences,” explains drummer Brann Dailor about the “Hushed And Grim” cover art. “That is the way you're able to say goodbye to the natural world and move on to the next dimension. You can see a green man in the center of the tree — the heart of the tree — and that is our good friend and manager Nick John, who passed away, unfortunately, a couple of years ago. [Nick] has a lot to do with the inspiration of the album, 'Hushed And Grim'."

Mastodon will launch the album on a fall co-headlining US tour with Opeth, with shows beginning in Asheville, NC on November 16.

Mastodon issue video for new single Teardrinker

Mastodon have issued a video for “Teardrinker”, the latest track from their forthcoming album, “Hushed And Grim.”

The tune follows “Pushing The Tides” as the second preview to the October 29 release, which was recorded in the band’s hometown of Atlanta, GA with producer David Bottrill [Tool, Rush, Muse, Peter Gabriel] and features 15 songs, surveying sonic landscapes of rock, psychedelia, punk, metal, alternative, and prog while maintaining the group’s strong musical identity.

Mastodon worked on the follow-up to 2017's "Emperor Of Sand" during a period following the loss of longtime manager, Nick John, who died while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2018; as a result, an atmosphere of very real loss, loneliness, and longing permeates through the album as they musically say goodbye to their old friend and confidant.

"Essentially, to be brief, [the tree] is an afterlife mythology that when you pass away, your spirit goes into the heart of a tree and then experiences all the pillars of your in successions of the seasons that the tree experiences,” explains drummer Brann Dailor about the “Hushed And Grim” cover art. “That is the way you're able to say goodbye to the natural world and move on to the next dimension. You can see a green man in the center of the tree — the heart of the tree — and that is our good friend and manager Nick John, who passed away, unfortunately, a couple of years ago. [Nick] has a lot to do with the inspiration of the album, 'Hushed And Grim'."

Mastodon will launch the album on a fall co-headlining US tour with Opeth, with shows beginning in Asheville, NC on November 16.

Mastodon announce co-headlining US tour with Opeth

Mastodon have announced dates for a fall co-headlining US tour with Swedish rockers Opeth.

The three-week series – with special guests Zeal & Ardor – will open in Asheville, NC on November 16.

Mastodon will be touring in support of their new double album, “Hushed And Grim”; due October 29, the band recorded the project in their hometown of Atlanta, GA with producer David Bottrill (Tool, Rush, Muse, Peter Gabriel).

The band recently issued a video the set’s lead track, “Pushing The Tides.”

Opeth’s latest release is 2019’s “In Cauda Venenum”, which was a Top 10 record in several European countries while peaking at No. 12 in their Swedish homeland.

“Get ready North America!,” says Mastodon. “We are hitting the road with Opeth and Zeal & Ardor for our first tour since 2019! We can’t wait to see you this Fall! Let’s do this!”

Presale tickets will be available from Wednesday, September 15 at 10 AM local time through 10 PM the same day, with general public seats going on sale Friday, September at 10 AM local time.

Earlier this year, the group issued "Forged By Neron”, a track from the “Dark Nights: Death Metal Soundtrack”, and recently delivered a livestream of a rare acoustic performance from the Georgia Aquarium.

Mastodon launched a series of US appearances at last month’s Psycho Festival in Las Vegas; they played Rocklahoma on September 5 ahead of sets at Ohio’s Inkcarceration Festival and Virginia’s Blue Ridge Rock Festival this week.
