Black Sabbath stream Live Evil reissue

Black Sabbath is streaming their 1983 package, “Live Evil”, in sync with the release of a 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition.

The band’s first official live project has been expanded for its milestone anniversary to feature two versions: a remastered edition by Andy Pearce alongside a new mix created from the original analog multi-tracks by longtime band associate Wyn Davis.

Available in multiple formats including a 4-CD set, a 4-LP set and digitally, the physical versions also come with illustrated hardback books that include new liner notes and replicas of the concert book and poster from the Mob Rules tour.

A new era of Black Sabbath began in 1979 when singer Ronnie James Dio joined the band, along with founding members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, to launch a new incarnation of the iconic heavy metal band.

The newly minted quartet debuted in 1980 with “Heaven and Hell”, a platinum-certified smash that won over fans of the original lineup. Halfway through the album’s tour, Ward left and was replaced by Vinny Appice. When the tour ended in 1981, the group decamped to Los Angeles and quickly recorded Sabbath’s 10th studio album, “Mob Rules.” Released in November 1981, the record would be certified gold; while touring behind the project, the band announced plans to record several shows for what would become its first official concert album.

When “Live Evil” arrived in 1983, the double album was a commercial and critical triumph, reaching No. 13 in the UK and No. 37 on the US Billboard Top 200.

Black Sabbath announce European release of Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules reissues

Black Sabbath will release reissues of 1980’s “Heaven And Hell” and 1981’s “Mob Rules” albums next month.

The iconic band’s first two records with Ronnie James Dio – which were remastered and expanded with rare and unreleased music for a North American release in 2021 – will now be made available in Europe.

Following the 1979 firing of Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath brought in Dio as a creative partner, frontman and vocalist for “Heaven And Hell”, which saw a renewed return to form for the group with songs like “Neon Knights”, “Die Young” and the epic title track; it went on to reach the US Top 30 and become the group’s first UK Top 10 set in 5 years.

Due November 4, “Heaven And Hell: Deluxe Edition” includes a remastered version of the original studio album and adds several bonus tracks that have never been released in North America, including versions of “Children Of The Sea” and “Die Young” recorded live in 1980 in Hartford, CT. The set concludes with live rarities like “E5150” and “Neon Knights” that originally appeared in 2007 on the Rhino Handmade’s limited edition collection, “Black Sabbath: Live At Hammersmith Odeon.”

Originally issues in 1981, “Mob Rules” featured drummer Vinny Appice, who replaced Bill Ward after he quit during the Heaven And Hell tour. The project – which delivered fan favorites like “The Sign Of The Southern Cross,” “Turn Up The Night” and the title track – virtually replicated the chart success of the previous release.

Due November 18, “Mob Rules: Deluxe Edition” includes an expansive selection of rare and unreleased recordings. Along with additional tracks from “Live At Hammersmith Odeon”, the collection also includes a newly mixed version of “The Mob Rules”, and an entire concert recorded in 1982 in Portland, OR.

The Dio-fronted lineup disbanded in 1982 but reunited a decade later to record “Dehumanizer” and tour before going on hiatus again. The group came together again in 2006 to record three new songs for Rhino’s era-spanning collection, “Black Sabbath: The Dio Years.” The collaboration led to a highly anticipated world tour in 2007 where the group was billed as Heaven And Hell; they issued a final album of new material, “The Devil You Know”, in 2009.

“Heaven And Hell: Deluxe Edition” and “Mob Rules: Deluxe Edition” will be reissued in 2CD, and 2LP sets; due to space constraints, both vinyl editions include a selection of bonus material from the CDs. The music will also be available via digital download and streaming services.

Ronnie James Dio documentary coming to cinemas

The official Ronnie James Dio documentary, “Dio: Dreamers Never Die”, will debut in cinemas worldwide late next month.

Following its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX this spring, the project – directed by Don Argott and Demian Fenton and executive produced by Wendy Dio – delves deep into the singer’s career, from a ‘50s doo-wop crooner to his early rock days in Elf and Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, to replacing Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath, and finally cementing his rock star status with his own band, Dio.

The film incorporates never-before-seen footage and personal photos, as well as offering intimate scenes with his closest peers, family, and friends, among them Wendy Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Glenn Hughes, Vinny Appice, Lita Ford, Rob Halford, Sebastian Bach, Eddie Trunk, and Jack Black.

Tickets for the cinema event will go on sale on Wednesday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m. EDT at diodreamersneverdie.com.

"People who have conviction, talent and heart like Ronnie James Dio are in short supply these days,” says co-directors Argott and Fenton. “It is refreshing to share his inspiring story of believing in yourself and chasing your dreams. As life-long Dio fans, it is incredibly humbling to bring Ronnie’s journey to the screen and we can’t wait to share it with audiences."

A soundtrack from “Dio: Dreamers Never Die” will be released in the fall.

Ronnie James Dio to release expanded Holy Diver reissue

Ronnie James Dio’s team have announced plans to release a remixed and expanded version of his 1983 debut album, “Holy Diver”, on July 8.

Timed to arrive in sync with what would have been the late rocker’s 80th birthday on July 10, the “Holy Diver” Super Deluxe Edition delivers two versions of the project: the first is a new mix of the album from the original analog tapes by Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot); the second is a newly-remastered version of the original 1983 mix.

The package will also include a previously-unreleased recording of Dio captured live in a 1983 show at Selland Arena in Fresno, CA during the Holy Diver Tour – and unreleased outtakes for several album cuts, including unheard takes for “Invisible,” “Straight Through The Heart,” and a version of “Rainbow In The Dark” that boasts an alternative guitar solo. There’s also an early version of “Evil Eyes,” a song that would resurface on Dio’s 1984 follow-up album, “The Last in Line.”

A selection of rarities rounds out the new collection with mono and stereo 7” single edits for “Rainbow In The Dark” and a version of “Evil Eyes” that was released in 1983 as the B-side to “Holy Diver.”

The 2022 reissue will be available in multiple formats, including 4CD and 2LP sets.

Dio recorded “Holy Diver” following his 1982 exit from Black Sabbath, putting together a lineup that included drummer Vinny Appice (Dio’s Black Sabbath bandmate), bassist/keyboardist Jimmy Bain (Dio’s Rainbow bandmate) and guitarist Vivian Campbell.

The album delivered two singles – the title track and “Rainbow In The Dark” – that delivered significant airplay in the US and helped push the record to sales of more than 2 million copies in the region.

Dio passed away in 2010 at the age of 67 after a battle with stomach cancer.

The official Ronnie James Dio documentary, “Dio: Dreamers Never Die”, premiered earlier this year at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX; directed by Don Argott and Demian Fenton and executive produced by Wendy Dio, the project traces the singer’s legendary career, which included stints with Rainbow and Sabbath, among others, alongside his solo years.

Ronnie James Dio documentary to world premiere at SXSW Film Festival

The official Ronnie James Dio documentary, “Dio: Dreamers Never Die”, will see its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX next month.

Directed by Don Argott and Demian Fenton and executive produced by Wendy Dio, the project about the late rock legend – who passed away in 2010 at the age of 67 after a battle with stomach cancer – has been years in the making.

According to the film’s synopsis, the documentary “delves deep into his incredible rise from 50's doo-wop crooner, to his early classic rock days in Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, to replacing the iconic lead singer Ozzy Osborne in Black Sabbath, to finally cement his legend with DIO. Ronnie's biography is completely unique to the tired sex, drugs and rock and roll cliches. The film is about perseverance, dreams and the power to believe in yourself.”

“Dio: Dreamers Never Die” will see its world premiere at Austin’s Paramount Theatre on March 17, with an online stream available the following day.

For full screening details, visit sxsw.com.

With Wendy Dio’s guidance, Ronnie's memoir, "Rainbow In The Dark: The Autobiography", was published last summer.

Tony Iommi comments on unreleased Black Sabbath song leak

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi is commenting on the recent online posting of an unreleased 1979 song by the legendary UK band.

Audio of the tune "Slapback" was captured during 1979 pre-production sessions for “Heaven And Hell”, which marked the legendary band’s first record with Ronnie James Dio after Ozzy Osbourne was fired by the group.

The track was uploaded to YouTube by Gary Rees – the stepson and executor of the estate of Black Sabbath's longtime keyboardist Geoff Nicholls – and its history has been confirmed by bassist Geezer Butler.

"I'm not at all happy with [Nicholls's estate releasing the song] — at all,” shared Iommi on the March 11 edition of SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk". “And it's left a really bad taste in my mouth. At that point, when we did that, Geoff wasn't even involved in the band; I hadn't even got Geoff over at that time. That is actually Ronnie playing bass on that… And that was just in the lounge recorded on a cassette.

"We had one or two things that we'd jam around on and play on and stuff, but it [wasn't] right for the album, so we didn't put it into shape; we didn't record it [properly] or anything."

The “Slapback” posting is the second one by Rees, who recently shared a demo recording of “Heaven And Hell” with Nicholls on bass in place of Butler.

Black Sabbath released expanded editions of 1980’s “Heaven And Hell” and 1981’s “Mob Rules” on March 5.

Unreleased 1979 Black Sabbath song surfaces online

An unreleased Black Sabbath song entitled “Slapback” has surfaced online.

Audio of the tune was captured during 1979 pre-production sessions for “Heaven And Hell”, which marked the legendary band’s first record with Ronnie James Dio after Ozzy Osbourne was fired by the group.

The track was uploaded to YouTube by Gary Rees – the stepson and executor of the estate of Black Sabbath's longtime keyboardist Geoff Nicholls – who recently posted a demo recording of the project’s title track with Nicholls on bass in place of Geezer Butler.

“This latest upload from the Geoff Nicholls estate,” explains Rees. “I believe is called ‘Slapback’ from the scrawling on the cassette and the chorus. This is from the same cassette as the Heaven & Hell upload on this channel. It doesn't sound like a typical Sabbath song if it is them but it does sound like Ronnie James Dio. It must be a cover, any clues? I have no idea about anything, I wasn't there. Everything is speculation. Great tune by the way. Is it Ronnie on bass or "a friend from Birmingham"?

During a March 8 interview with SiriusXM‘s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, Butler confirmed the song’s history and the fact that he played bass on it during rehearsals prior to his leaving for a time to deal with issues surrounding the eventual divorce from his first wife the following year.

“Yeah, that was one of the songs that we did before I left,” Butler recalled. “It’s probably the reason I did leave. [Laughs] It was just one of those songs that didn’t make the grade.”

The rocker added that it’s “incredible” to see both of these recordings see the light of day more than 40 years later, adding: “And it’s quite good quality as well. I’ve heard the two songs from the Geoff Nicholls thing. It’s reasonable quality.”

Black Sabbath released expanded editions of 1980’s “Heaven And Hell” and 1981’s “Mob Rules” on March 5.

Ronnie James Dio autobiography release date announced

A release date has been announced for Ronnie James Dio’s memoir.

Due July 27 via Permuted Press, “Rainbow In The Dark: The Autobiography” will feature the legendary singer’s story, from his days in Rainbow and Black Sabbath to the launch of his own band, Dio.

Prior to his 2010 passing from stomach cancer, Dio had been working on the project, looking back on the life that led him from his hometown in upstate New York to the biggest stages in the world, including the arena that represented the pinnacle of success to him – New York’s Madison Square Garden, where the book begins and ends.

As Ronnie contemplates the achievement of a dream, he reflects on the key aspects that coalesced into this moment—the close gang of friends that gave him his start in music, playing parties, bars, frats, and clubs; the sudden transition that moved him to the microphone and changed his life forever; the luck that led to the birth of Rainbow and a productive but difficult collaboration with Ritchie Blackmore; the chance meeting that made him the second singer of Black Sabbath, taking them to new levels of success; the story behind the birth of the Devil Horns, the lasting symbol of heavy metal, and much more.

Everything is described in great detail and in the frankest terms, from his fallout with Blackmore, to the drugs that derailed the resurrection of Black Sabbath, to the personality clashes that frayed each band.

Written with longtime friend of thirty years and esteemed music writer, Mick Wall, who took up the mantle after Ronnie’s passing, “Rainbow In The Dark” is a frank, startling, often hilarious, sometimes sad testament to dedication and ambition, filled with moving coming-of-age tales, glorious stories of excess, and candid recollections of what really happened backstage at the hotel, in the studio, and back home behind closed doors far away from the road.

Dio’s early work with Black Sabbath will be featured on the expanded editions of the band’s “Heaven And Hell” and 1981’s “Mob Rules”, which will arrive on March 5.

Ronnie James Dio autobiography update

Ronnie James Dio's widow and manager Wendy Dio has shared an update on the status of the late rocker’s autobiography.

"I have the book, Ronnie´s autobiography, finally finished with Mick Wall and I think it´s coming out on Ronnie´s birthday, July 10th,” Wendy tells Sweden’s Rock Sverige. "Ronnie had written half of it, and Mick Wall and I got together and found lots of interviews so I wanted it to still be in Ronnie´s voice. I´m very pleased with that."

Wendy explained that Dio’s memoir isn’t the only project in the works these days.

"Then there´s the documentary with BMG and it´s probably coming out next year,” she added. “We´ve been working on that and then it had to stop for a little bit because of them having to go to Europe to interview more people and because of the travel bans they haven´t been able to do that. Hopefully it will come out in 2022."

Following stints in Rainbow and Black Sabbath, Dio formed his own band in 1982 and went on to release 10 studio albums during his solo career before passing away from stomach cancer on May 16, 2010 at the age of 67.

Dio’s early work with Black Sabbath will be featured on the expanded editions of the band’s 1980 set, “Heaven And Hell”, and 1981’s “Mob Rules”, which will arrive on March 5.

Black Sabbath: Heaven And Hell demo surfaces online

A demo recording of the 1980 Black Sabbath classic, “Heaven And Hell”, has surfaced online.

The unreleased footage was captured during pre-production sessions for the project, which marked the legendary band’s first with Ronnie James Dio after Ozzy Osbourne was fired by the group.

The 1979 recording features keyboardist Geoff Nicholls on bass in place of founding member Geezer Butler, who was absent during the 1979 sessions while dealing with issues surrounding the eventual divorce from his first wife the following year.

Audio of the title track was uploaded to YouTube by Nicholls’ stepson and executor of his estate, Gary Rees, in sync with the anniversary of the rocker’s passing after a long battle with lung cancer.

“Geoff Nicholls passed away 4 years ago, 28th January 2017,” shared Rees. “This upload is a tribute to him. I recently found this SONY C-90 tape cassette amongst the thousands in Geoff Nicholls' archive. On the inlay card is written ' ON & ON HEAVEN & HELL ORIGINAL VERSION GEOFF PLAYING BASS'. Inside the cassette case was a Maxell UD 90.

“The B side is written 'On + On HEAVEN HELL ORIGINAL GEOFF ON BASS'. Nowhere does it say that this is Black Sabbath on the cassette. ‘On And On Heaven And Hell’ may have been the original working title.”

Nicholls recorded and toured with Black Sabbath until 2004.

“Heaven And Hell” delivered a number of classics, including the lead single “Neon Knights”, “Lady Evil”, “Children Of The Sea” and the title track, earning the revitalized band a Top 10 album in the UK while peaking at No. 28 on the US Billboard 200 on its way to sales of a million copies.

Black Sabbath will release expanded editions of “Heaven And Hell” and 1981’s “Mob Rules” on March 5.

Black Sabbath announce expanded reissues of Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules

Black Sabbath will release expanded editions of 1980’s “Heaven And Hell” and 1981’s “Mob Rules” albums on March 5.

The pair of classic records introduced the band’s era with singer Ronnie James Dio, who was added to the lineup just two months after the spring 1979 firing of Ozzy Osbourne.

“Heaven And Hell” delivered a number of classics, including the lead single “Neon Knights”, “Lady Evil”, “Children Of The Sea” and the title track, earning the revitalized outfit a Top 10 album in the UK while peaking at No. 28 on the US Billboard 200 on its way to sales of a million copies.

The 2021 reissue presents a new remastered version of the record alongside several bonus tracks that have never been released in North America, including live material from a 1980 show in Hartford, CT and audio that originally appeared in 2007 on the Rhino Handmade’s limited edition collection, “Black Sabbath: Live At Hammersmith Odeon.”

The band returned to the studio in 1981 to record “Mob Rules” with drummer Vinny Appice, who replaced Bill Ward during the “Heaven And Hell” tour. The project – which included “Voodoo”, “Turn Up The Night”, “The Sign Of The Southern Cross” and the title track – hit No. 12 in the UK and No. 29 on the Billboard 200.

The expanded reissue featured the remastered album, a new mix of “The Mob Rules”, and an expansive selection of rare and unreleased recordings.

The Dio-fronted lineup disbanded in 1982 but reunited a decade later to record 1992’s “Dehumanizer” and tour before going on hiatus again; the group came together again in 2006 to record three new songs for Rhino’s collection, “Black Sabbath: The Dio Years”, which led to a world tour in 2007 under the name Heaven And Hell. Their final album of new material, “The Devil You Know”, was issued in 2009.

Expanded versions of both classic albums will be available in digital formats, and 2CD and 2LP Deluxe Editions; due to space constraints, both vinyl editions include a selection of bonus material from the CDs.

The projects are being previewed with live versions of “Heaven And Hell” and “The Mob Rules.”

Dio passed away in 2010 at the age of 67 after a battle with stomach cancer.

Ronnie James Dio expanded reissues announced

Expanded versions of the final four studio albums by Dio – led by Ronnie James Dio – will be released on February 21.

Billed as “Dio: The Studio Album Collection - 1996-2004”, the project will deliver remastered editions of 1996’s “Angry Machines”, 2000’s “Magica”, 2002’s “Killing The Dragon” and 2004’s “Master Of The Moon” complete with rare and never before released live and studio bonus tracks.

Long out of print on vinyl, the 180-gram black vinyl includes the original track listings and is available as a Limited Edition 1st run with and LP-sized Lenticular album art print; as a special bonus, the “Magica” 2LP also contains a 7" single featuring "Electra," the only known completed track from the planned “Magica 2” album.

The CD versions of each album have also been long out of print globally. These newly remastered deluxe versions are showcased in mediabook packaging along with a second disc featuring rare and unleased bonus material. In addition to rare studio tracks "Electra" (included on "Magica") and "Prisoner Of Paradise" (included on “Master Of The Moon”), each bonus disc includes a selection of both rare or never before released live tracks from the accompanying tour for each studio release.

All bonus tracks are also available on the streaming/digital versions.

"I am very excited to be working with BMG, a label that still has a passion for rock music,” says Wendy Dio. “They will be making the complete Dio catalogue available again with some interesting surprises."

Following stints in Rainbow and Black Sabbath, Dio formed his own band in 1982 and went on to release 10 studio albums during his solo career before passing away from stomach cancer on May 16, 2010 at the age of 67.
