VIDEO: Lou Reed inducted into Rock Hall

Lou Reed was inducted posthumously into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland on Saturday.

Reed, who passed away October 27, 2013 from liver disease at the age of 71, was introduced by longtime friend and artist Patti Smith.

It was the singer’s second Rock Hall honor: Reed and The Velvet Underground were inducted by Smith in 1996.

Reed’s widow, musician Laurie Anderson, was on hand to accept the award on behalf of her late husband.

"Lou understood pain and he understood beauty," said Anderson. "He knew these two were often intertwined. That was what energized him and made him vibrate.

"You change forever when you have the love of your life die in your arms. When Lou died in my arms, I watched as he did tai chi with his hands. I watched the joy and surprise that came over his face when he died."

The musical tribute to Reed saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O and Nick Zinner deliver a version of "Vicious," followed by a Beck performance of "Satellite Of Love."

Reed was inducted at the 30th annual ceremony along with Green Day, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Bill Withers, Ringo Starr and the “5” Royales.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, Green Day lead 2015 Rock Hall inductees

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble and Green Day lead the list of artists to be inducted into the 2015 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

The Texas blues legend topped the fan ballot for the event with more than 18 million votes – more than 5 million ahead of the next nominee.

Joining the pair are the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Lou Reed and Bill Withers; Beatles drummer Ringo Starr enters under the Award For Musical Excellence, while the “5” Royales enter with the Early Influence Award.

To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.

“As we mark 30 years of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions, we’re proud to honor these artists,” said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President Joel Peresman. "These Inductees epitomize rock and roll’s impact over the past 50 years and continuing through today."

The 30th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 18 at Cleveland’s Public Hall.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, December 18 at 10 a.m. EST.

Lou Reed’s gear goes up for auction

Equipment used by the late Lou Reed is going up for auction on eBay.

Over the past thirty years, Reed amassed a large collection of equipment in support of his many tours. While all of his most important guitars, amps, and effects will be kept by Sister Ray Enterprises for his archive, there are many pieces of musical gear and road cases that need to be sold.

Over the next few weeks these items will be auctioned through eBay.

The proceeds will go towards the work that is underway to develop the Lou Reed Archive.

New items will be posted every few days and a wide variety of items will be available.

Reed infamously teamed up with Metallica for 2011’s “Lulu”, a project based on songs for a theatrical production of Frank Wedekind’s classic femme fatale “Lulu” plays.

Lou Reed biography in the works

Rolling Stone writer Will Hermes has signed with publishers Farrar, Straus and Giroux to write “Lou: A New York Life”, a biography of the late Lou Reed.

The New York Times reports Hermes says he plans to write a “full, definitive biography” on Reed, who passed away October 27 from liver disease at the age of 71.

As for the subtitle, still tentative, Hermes said New York City would “figure prominently” in the book, “because how could it not? Reed loved the city deeply, based his adult life here, rooted much of his work here and was a huge figure in our cultural life. I think we have yet to fully measure the loss. He was one of the greatest artists of our generation.”

Herme has previously published “Love Goes To Buildings On Fire”, a look at the Talking Heads, the Ramones and other influential figures of the mid-1970s New York music scene.

Lou Reed dead at 71

Lou Reed died Sunday on Long Island at the age of 71, reports Rolling Stone.

The cause of his death has not yet been released, but Reed underwent a liver transplant in May.

Born in Brooklyn in 1942, Reed began his music career as a songwriter for Pickwick Records, and it was there that he met John Cale. The pair played together in The Primitives, then The Warlocks, before forming The Velvet Underground in 1964.

With the Velvet Underground in the late Sixties, Reed fused street-level urgency with elements of European avant-garde music, marrying beauty and noise, while bringing a whole new lyrical honesty to rock & roll poetry.

As a restlessly inventive solo artist, from the Seventies into the 2010s, he was chameleonic, thorny and unpredictable, challenging his fans at every turn. Glam, punk and alternative rock are all unthinkable without his revelatory example. "One chord is fine," he once said, alluding to his bare-bones guitar style. "Two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz."

Lou Reed & Metallica: Lulu is for literate people, says Reed

Lou Reed claims he doesn’t care what anyone thinks.

The grumpiest guy in rock continues to defend “Lulu,” the album he made with Metallica, despite the love- it-or-hate-it reaction its received to date.

“Who cares?” Reed tells the Telegraph when the mere mention of the critic’s reaction to the project. “I never wrote for them then, I don’t write for them now. I have no interest in what they have to say about anything. I’m interested in whether I like it. I write for me.”

“You know a lot of time these guys that interview us, they think they’re more literate than I am,” rants Reed. “That would be a real bad mistake. Don’t kid yourself about me, you know what I’m saying? I’m not a good guy to f--- with.”

Part of the tough guy mask Lou wears to protect himself from letting others know he actually does care what people have to say about his work shows a crack when he blurts out, “Are you gonna savage this when you leave the room?” out of the blue. “I think we did a sensual thing. Music is magical, it can make you feel good, it can make you feel bad, and then you put some serious words to it, not just 'I got released from rehab this week, yay.’ Let’s say you go a little bit past there. In my conceit, I thought what if Tennessee Williams had got a crack at this? Can’t it be A Streetcar Named Desire that’s a rock record? Why isn’t anyone doing it? Instead of writing the trash that is out there. I wanted to do something on that level, always. I came close on Berlin. Pretty close. But this one, for me, from beginning to end, this is it.”

As much as Reed asserts disdain for criticism, the Telegraph interviewer suspects he has been upset by the reaction to "Lulu."

“I think this thing needs a champion. This is for people who are literate," says Reed. "This isn’t 'I cry in my beer cos you f---ed him and ran your truck through my bar.’ You can write 30 of those and move to Nashville. These words – every time I see them I get thrilled because it does it to me. It may do it to no one else, I don’t care. I can’t try any harder. I can’t do any better. And my heart was pure and my soul was pure, too. I went in there to make music with the best guys I could find. And we did.”

VIDEO: Lou Reed & Metallica – The View

The Lou Reed/Metallica project “Lulu” has released its first video.

Short of calling it a single, “The View” has been the band’s focus track since the album launched, having performed the track live on various European tv and radio programs.

The black and white clip was directed by Darren Aronofsky, and shot at the Metallica HQ in the San Francisco Bay area.

"The first time I heard 'The View' I was stunned," Aronofsky said. "I had never heard anything like it. Half was all Lou. The other half all Metallica. It was a marriage that on the surface made no sense, but the fusion changed the way I thought about both artists and morphed into something completely fresh and new. I couldn't stop listening to it. Lou's crushing lyrics, and the band's incredible licks."

"I am very excited about working with Darren Aronofsky on our powerful video 'The View,'" said Reed. "I feel Darren understood the power and range of the emotions fueled by the fire of Metallica. His strength and spirit are on display in every frame and I think he has caught the anger, rage and anguish at the bottom of the soul of real rock."

More Lou Reed & Metallica footage has surfaced.

As part of their European promo swing for “Lulu,” the band appeared on France 4’s “Taratata” show, performing a couple of live songs and hanging out for an interview.

The program, taped November 9, was broadcast on November 25.

VIDEO: Lou Reed & Metallica perform on Italian TV

Lou Reed & Metallica continue their European promo tour for “Lulu” with an appearance on Italian TV over the weekend.

The guys performed a couple of tracks, and did a short interview, on the Italian TV show "Che Tempo Che Fa" on RAI 3 Sunday.

Loutallica did live versions of “Iced Honey” and the Velvet Underground track “White Light/White Heat.”

The Italian visit is the latest stop on the promo trail, following a UK appearance on Later With Jools Holland (see that here and part 2 here), and a German radio broadcast/webcast in Cologne last Friday (see that here).

“Lulu” is stiffing in America, where it sold a mere 13,000 copies in its first week; to put that in perspective, Metallica’s last studio album, “Death Magnetic,” sold 490,000 in just its first three days back in 2008.

VIDEO: Lou Reed & Metallica on Jools Holland pt. 2

More of Lou Reed & Metallica on Jools Holland’s show has surfaced.

The Tuesday broadcast featured two live tracks: “Iced Honey” from the “Lulu” release and a Velvet Underground cover of “White Light/White Heat” – check them out here.

The BBC runs an extended version of the show on Fridays, and the show included an interview with Lou and Lars, as well as a performance of “The View” from the Tuesday taping.

This week, Metallica were announced as the first headliners for the 10th anniversary edition of the Download Festival, which runs June 8-10, 2012 at its regular home in Donington Park (Black Sabbath were announced on Friday at their reunion press conference).

Metallica posted the news:

“To help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Download Festival, the dudes who run it asked us how we felt about playing 'The Black Album' in its entirety and we thought ‘hold on, that could be really cool since it is technically the tail-end of the 20th anniversary of the release (August '91).’ So come hang with us for the 2012 version of our European Summer Vacation featuring 'The Black Album,' with the exclusive stop in the UK on June 9.”

2012 marks the third headlining slot for Metallica; they played in 2004 and, again, in 2006, when they performed the legendary “Master Of Puppets” album in its entirety.

Lou Reed & Metallica performed a live radio broadcast/webcast on Friday evening in support of the “Lulu” project.

The show, on Germany’s 1LIVE, featured music and conversation with the band in front of a studio audience made up of about 400 fans. The broadcast also aired on a number of Germany’s public broadcast network stations either live or at a later point, and all participating stations also hosted the live stream on their websites.

Loutallica played 6 live tracks - including the Velvet Underground’s “White Light/White Heat” - and sat for an extensive interview in the middle of the show.

VIDEO: Lou Reed & Metallica perform on Later with Jools Holland

Lou Reed & Metallica continue their promotion swing for the new “Lulu” release.

Lou Reed & Metallica announce live radio broadcast/webcast

Lou Reed & Metallica move forward with the promotion of their new effort, “Lulu,” with a live German radio broadcast that will be simulcast online.

On Friday evening, November 11, Lou and the band will be performing in Germany on 1LIVE that will also be webcast on www.einslive.de and www.metallica.de

400 fans will make up the studio audience, and some will have the chance to ask the guys about the project.

The broadcast will also air on a number of Germany’s public broadcast network stations either live or at a later point, and all participating stations will also host the live stream on their websites.

Lou Reed: Metallica fans are threatening to shoot me

The reaction to the new Lou Reed/Metallica “Lulu” project, out Tuesday, is getting downright nasty and personal.

“Metallica's fans 'are threatening to shoot me, and that's only because I showed up,'" Lou tells USA Today. "They haven't even heard the record yet, and they're recommending various forms of torture and death.”

The veteran Reed has been through this before. "I don't have any fans left. After ‘Metal Machine Music’ (1975), they all fled. Who cares? I'm essentially in this for the fun of it."

The negative fallout doesn't surprise Ulrich, either. "In 1984, when hard-core Metallica fans heard acoustic guitars on 'Fade to Black,' there was a nuclear meltdown in the heavy-metal community," Ulrich says. "There have been many more since then.”

"This is something they've never heard,” continues Lars. “Nobody hears rhythms or delivers poetry the way Lou does. It's not for everyone, but I think it's a fantastic record."

Reed goes a step further, declaring "Lulu" his best work, on par with 2003's "The Raven," his spoken/sung album of Edgar Allan Poe interpretations. “It vanished like the foam in the wind," he says.

“Lulu” may do likewise, Reed acknowledges. "No one wants ‘Lulu Part 2,’ but on Radio Lou, in my head where I hear these songs, I want more of it."

The strange bedfellows first performed together at 2009's 25th anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York. Afterward, Reed proposed teaming on covers of his rarer tracks, then switched gears after composing tunes for director Robert Wilson's Lulu production in Berlin.

Ulrich and guitarist James Hetfield agreed after listening to those versions. "No drums, no guitars, no recognizable rhythms or keys," Ulrich recalls. "Just these soundscapes, incredibly beautiful. And Lou reciting these potent words. It was so deep. I called Lou and said, 'I don't know where this is going, but we're in.' Lou came out a week later with (producer) Hal Willner to see our studio. Within one hour, we were recording."

Reed found working with Ulrich, Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo exhilarating.

"They are my metal blood brothers," says Reed, 69. "They're very brave, and they can play. I'm not easy to play with. Some of (Lulu) that sounds easy is actually really hard. A lot of cool players can't do that. Academia drove it out of them."

There’s a heavy dose of new music in stores this week, as the holiday season releases kick into gear.

Leading the headlines this week are new projects from Lou Reed & Metallica, and Megadeth, and reissue packages from Journey, U2, The Beach Boys, Jethro Tull and Queen.

New music DVDs include stuff from The Rolling Stones, Steve Winwood, Lindsey Buckingham, Chicago and Kings Of Leon.

In terms of books, there’s a new autobiography from original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley, as well as a paperback issue of Deep Purple legend Glenn Hughes' memoir, originally released in a limited edition hardcover back in the spring.
