R.E.M. announce Radio Free Europe 40th anniversary reissue

R.E.M. will reissue their debut single, “Radio Free Europe”, on July 23 to mark the song’s 40th anniversary.

Prior to its inclusion on the band’s first album, 1983’s “Murmur”, the track was originally recorded with producer Mitch Easter (later of Let’s Active) in 1981 – along with “Sitting Still” and “White Tornado” – and the tracks were copied to several-hundred self-produced cassette tapes (approximately 400 copies) and distributed to clubs, journalists and labels.

The collection, titled “Cassette Set”, was the only place to get the Athens, GA group’s first recordings, which caught the attention of Jonny Hibbert, who owned the Atlanta-based indie label, Hib-Tone. After Hibbert offered to put out the band’s first single, the group returned to the studio and laid down some overdubs for new mixes by the label owner.

While the band preferred Easter’s original mix of the song, Hibbert chose his own mix for the 7-inch single, which featured “Sitting Still” as the B-side. An initial pressing of 1,000 was released in July 1981, with 600 copies designated for promotional use. Later, an additional 6,000 copies were issued, due to popular demand (and for practical reasons, as the first pressing inadvertently omitted contact info for the band.)

Despite mishaps along the way, the release of the “Radio Free Europe” single earned the band critical acclaim and an offer from I.R.S. Records. Under the new label, a more experienced R.E.M. re-recorded “Radio Free Europe.” The new version—which featured a slower tempo than its predecessor and slightly revised lyrics—was released as the band’s first official single with I.R.S. as part of the launch of “Murmur.”

The single garnered the band their first chart success, peaking at No.78 on the Billboard Hot 100, and helped to propel “Murmur” up the album charts, where it reached No.36.

Despite the breakthrough success of that 1983 recording, R.E.M. has long stated that the rougher, Hib-Tone version of “Radio Free Europe” is the superior recording. And, while fans may note that the single was listed as a track on R.E.M.’s 1988 compilation, “Eponymous”, and then on 2006's I.R.S. years compilation “(And I Feel Fine...The Best of The I.R.S. Years 1982-1987)”, the version that was labeled “Original Hib-Tone single” was, in fact, Easter’s original mix, not Hibbert’s. That formative pressing, however, has remained a sought-after rarity for four decades, and will be available again for the first time in 2021.

R.E.M. will mark the 40th anniversary release of the original recording of “Radio Free Europe” as a 45rpm vinyl single, as part of a limited-edition bundle (1,500 copies worldwide) with “Cassette Set” in July via the band’s official store, which will also offer a custom limited edition portable cassette player, produced by RecordingTheMasters.

These reissues mark the first of many special releases around R.E.M.’s 40th-anniversary celebrations.

Formed in 1980, R.E.M. released 15 studio albums and sold more than 85 million records worldwide before disbanding in 2011; they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007.

R.E.M. By MTV doc to screen in cinemas ahead of DVD release

The Alexander Young documentary, “R.E.M. By MTV”, will screen in US theaters next month ahead of its DVD/Blu-ray release on June 2.

The project traces the career of the Athens, Georgia band who formed in 1980 and helped bring alternative rock into the mainstream. The group tells their story in their own words, through three decades of performances and interviews R.E.M. gave to MTV channels in the USA and around the world.

"It was a typical Athens story," says drummer Bill Berry. "Four guys meet at a party and want to play other parties and drink beer and have fun."

“R.E.M. By MTV” was originally issued as part of 2014’s “REMTV” box set; it premiered on MTV, VH1 and Palladia last November and the forthcoming release marks the first time it will be available as a standalone film.

Fathom Events will screen “R.E.M. By MTV” in more than 300 U.S. movie theaters on Tuesday, May 19 as a part of their “Classic Music Series.”

Tickets for these special screenings are available now at participating theater box offices and online at FathomEvents.com

VIDEO: R.E.M. preview REMTV box set

R.E.M. have issued a video of a 1991 MTV performance of “Fall On Me” as a preview to their forthcoming 6-DVD box set, “REMTV.”

Due November 24, the package highlights the band’s appearances on MTV, including live performances, visits and award show highlights, as well as a new documentary about the band and network's mutual history.

Disc One combines R.E.M.'s first and second performances on MTV Unplugged, along with the outtakes that debuted earlier this year on the audio release, Unplugged: The Complete 1991 And 2001 Sessions.

Disc Two opens with the band's 1998 VH1 Storytellers performance, including two previously unaired songs. Performances from various MTV award shows through the years, as well as the band’s 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame round out the second disc.

The next three discs present a series of rare live performances recorded between 1995 and 2008 in countries around the world.

Disc 6 presents the new feature-length documentary, "R.E.M. By MTV", which draws exclusively on archival events, the film traces R.E.M. and MTV’s parallel growth in real time.

"It occurred to us that there's all this footage of some of the band's absolute career highlights sitting in some MTV vaults in London and New York-- and thanks to a lot of effort and digging and arranging, this is our chance to share that music with various generations of R.E.M. fans in a pretty unique release,” said longtime manager Bertis Downs. “And Alexander Young's documentary is a fine way to tell the story of R.E.M. through its various twists and turns, as captured in real time by MTV's cameras-- it has some great funny bits too!"

R.E.M. bassist breaks news of David Letterman’s retirement

R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills broke the news of David Letterman’s retirement announcement on Thursday.

Performing as a guest on the program with Joseph Arthur – along with R.E.M. bandmate Peter Buck – Mills tweeted the news at 4:03 pm ET during The Late Show’s taping at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York.

“Dave just announced his retirement #2015 #muchlovedave” posted Mills.

Letterman told the studio audience that he informed CBS CEO Les Moonves Thursday of his decision to retire in 2015 after 22 years as host of The Late Show (and 11 with NBC’s Late Night), which prompted the bassist to hop on Twitter to spread the word.

“Right place, right time, what can I say,” said Mills backstage about breaking the news, recalling his first appearance on Late Night with R.E.M. in 1983.

As for the timing, he explained, “I thought about it. I didn’t want to blow Dave’s announcement, but then again, I figured there's 300 people in the audience all tweeting the same thing so I figured it was all right."

A press statement was issued by CBS CEO Les Moonves to confirm the news.

R.E.M. singer to induct Nirvana into Rock Hall

R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe will induct Nirvana into the 2014 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on April 10 in New York.

At press time, there’s no word on whether or not the surviving members of Nirvana will perform at the ceremony, which will be attended by Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

The induction comes 20 years after the passing of Kurt Cobain, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Seattle home on April 5, 1994; his body was discovered three days later by an electrician who had arrived to do some work on the property.

Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, will be at the event, and said recently that the evening will be awkward based on her long-standing feud with Grohl over the rights to, and use of, the band’s music.

"We're going to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and I think we're all sitting at the same table," said Love, who will say hello to Grohl. “Of course, it’s not my hashtag Yoko.”

The induction ceremony at New York’s Barclays Center will also see Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello induct KISS, Chris Martin of Coldplay induct Peter Gabriel, Questlove of The Roots induct Hall and Oates, Glenn Frey of The Eagles induct Linda Ronstadt, and Bruce Springsteen induct The E Street Band; a presenter for Cat Stevens remains to be announced.

R.E.M. to release two Unplugged concerts on Record Store Day

R.E.M. are issuing “Unplugged: The Complete 1991 and 2001 Sessions” as a 4-LP vinyl set for Record Store Day on April 19.

The set will include every performance from the original broadcasts – as well as 11 songs that never aired – marking the first time audio from both shows will be made available from the only band to headline the famed MTV series twice.

Five songs that never aired on the 1991 broadcast can be heard on this set for the first time, including two tracks from the multi-platinum album, “Green”, including “Get Up” and “World Leader Pretend.”

Material from the 2001 appearance, without original drummer Bill Berry (who retired in 1997 following a health scare), will include six songs never-before broadcast, a mixture of tracks from “Reveal” and 1998’s “Up”, as well as a re-imagination of the band’s breakthrough single, “The One I Love” from 1987’s “Document.”

Following their debut on vinyl for Record Store Day 2014, both “Unplugged” performances will be released on CD and digitally on May 20.

Always advocates for independent record stores, on April 19th (Record Store Day) R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills will be signing copies of the limited-edition, four-LP set at Bull Moose record store in Scarborough, Maine.

R.E.M. announce break-up

It’s the end of R.E.M.’s world as we know it.

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." - R.E.M.

And with that announcement Wednesday, 80’s college rock darlings cum 90’s alt-rock mainstream heroes cum 2000’s alt-rock elder statesmen have completed a 31-year run.

The band members say the time was right to call it a day, as they evaluated their career while putting together a Greatest Hits album due this November.

"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective; we started to ask ourselves 'what next?'," commented Mike Mills. "Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together. The time just feels right."

R.E.M. is unique in that they are very much still the group of friends from Athens, Georgia that they've been since the band formed in 1979. While their career has spanned 15 studio albums and huge global success, the band itself only ever comprised the four original members. The one person to leave this tight-knit group was drummer Bill Berry, who retired two years after suffering a brain aneurysm on-stage during 1995's "Monster" tour. But not before extracting a promise from his band mates that they would continue on as R.E.M.: "Bill insisted he would stay, if his leaving meant breaking the band up," remembers Michael Stipe.

Mills adds: "We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love and respect each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this -- there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart."

"A wise man once said -- 'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave," agrees Stipe. "We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it. I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end; and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way. We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years, our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."

Buck picks up on his thoughts: "One of the things that was always so great about being in R.E.M., was the fact that the records we made and the songs we wrote, meant as much to our fans as they did to us. It was, and still is, important to us to do right by them. Being a part of their lives has been an unbelievable gift.

"Mike, Michael, Bill, Bertis, and I walk away as great friends. I know I will be seeing them in the future, just as I know I will be seeing everyone that has followed and supported us through the years. Even if it's only in the vinyl aisle of your local record store, or standing at the back of a club; watching a group of 19-year-olds trying to change the world."

VIDEO: R.E.M. – Every Day Is Yours To Win

R.E.M.’s videos for songs from their newest release, “Collapse Into Now,” continue to surface.

Frontman Michael Stipe oversaw a plan to have noted filmmakers create videos for each of the disc’s 12 tracks.

“It was my idea to bring a very 20th Century idea – album - into the 21st Century,”
said Stipe, “by asking artists and filmmakers to create a film for each song on the new R.E.M. record.”

Tuesday, the band premiered a clip on YouTube for “Every Day Is Yours To Win,” directed by Jim McKay, Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch.

According to McKay, the video is comprised completely of YouTube clips, so it was fitting that, as an interesting addition to the launch, Stipe and McKay posted an introduction to the video itself on YouTube, as well, where they outlined the playlist of material used in the footage.

U2’s Bono can’t give away new R.E.M. album

Here’s a crazy, funny story from the New York Post.

Page Six reports U2’s Bono helped his wife, Ali Hewson, celebrate her 50th birthday at Michael White's Osteria Morini on Saturday night (March 19) with 20 guests, including R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, fellow U2-man The Edge, and Helena Christensen.

After dining on the rustic Italian fare, Bono emerged on the street to see if he could give away some copies of R.E.M.’s new album, “Collapse Into Now.”

A spy reports, "He was asking people loitering outside if they wanted a CD. Bono was largely ignored, with some looking at him like he was a crazy person, until one girl recognized him and snapped up the disc."

Released March 8, “Collapse Into Now” debuted at #5 on Billboard, so even if Bono couldn’t find many takers, a lot of fans did snag a copy of the disc in its first week in stores.

R.E.M. continue to roll out the videos for their new album, “Collapse Into Now,” which was released this week.

Michael Stipe oversaw the plan to have noted filmmakers create videos for each of the disc’s 12 tracks.

The newest one to surface is “Oh My Heart,” directed by Jem Cohen. A new York-based filmmaker, Cohen has a long history of mixing music with visuals, including three R.E.M. videos of note: “Talk About the Passion,” “Country Feedback” and “Nightswimming.”

NEW VIDEOS: R.E.M. 'Uberlin' and 'It Happened Today'

It feels like we’ve been talking about this for a long time, so, finally, it’ll be great to see R.E.M.’s newest album, “Collapse Into Now,” get its release this Tuesday, March 8.

A couple of new videos have surfaced from the project this week.

Directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, “Uberlin” follows Aaron Johnson (he played John Lennon in "Nowhere Boy") walking, jumping and dancing through the streets of London in broad daylight, to the beat of his own drummer with not a care in the world.

Speaking about the video, Taylor-Wood noted: "Michael Stipe gave me complete creative control and trusted me to make this piece for R.E.M." Michael added, "Sam and I had talked about doing something for R.E.M., but I had no idea that she and Aaron would create such a work of beauty. It's as if all the film references instantly updated themselves to "21st Century Now." Taylor-Wood added, "Aaron gave me his wild, free spirit and the collaboration was pure magic."

Directed by Tom Gilroy, “It Happened Today follows the story (dream?) of a young man who wanders into a deep, wintery forest.

R.E.M. launch Fan Remix Project

R.E.M. are offering fans the chance to remix their music, and giving them the tools to do it.

With the help of producer Jacknife Lee, the band has launched what it calls the “Remix Project.”

First up is the new R.E.M. track, "It Happened Today,” from the band’s forthcoming album, “Collapse Into Now,” due March 8.

Lee has delivered all the multi-track files for the song and R.E.M. have posted them on their website here.

Files are offered in AIFF and Garageband formats, so fans can pick what works for them by downloading the file format of their choice.

R.E.M. have set up a page at Soundcloud.com here for people to upload their results.

Here’s a posting from Jacknife Lee on the Remix Project:

Right from the early stages of recording this song in New Orleans Michael wanted to share the files with people to hear their different ideas and versions.

So here they are.

I have bounced some tracks together to make it easier to download and use. We ended up with over a hundred tracks with all the percussion, brass, three pianos, celeste, glockenspiels, vibraphone, eight acoustic guitars, two drum kits, bass synths, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, electric guitars, bass and all the voices.

Enjoy, and be bold.

Looking forward to hearing what you come up with.

It’s a shame R.E.M. have announced that they won’t be hitting the road in support of their new disc, “Collapse Into Now,” due out March 8.

The band’s new video for "Discoverer" shows R.E.M. nailing the song in a powerful live performance at Hansa Studio in Berlin, in what looks like a large rehearsal space.

The video is the second one released by R.E.M. this week, having previously issued the Buster Keaton-inspired “Mine Smell Like Honey.”

R.E.M. have just released the video for "Mine Smell Like Honey," the first radio single from the band’s forthcoming album, “Collapse Into Now,” due out March 8.

“Collapse Into Now” is produced by Garret "Jacknife" Lee (Snow Patrol, U2), and was recorded in different cities -- Berlin, Nashville, New Orleans -- with breaks between to write and rewrite songs.

New R.E.M. to feature Eddie Vedder, Patti Smith

More details are coming out about the new R.E.M. album, “Collapse Into Now,” due early next year (for initial news, see “R.E.M. finish new album” here).

Mike Mills tells Spin than the band’s 15th studio album is more “expansive” than 2008’s “Accelerate.”

"With Accelerate, we were trying to make a point by making the songs as short and as fast as possible," Mills says. "So we wanted this new one to be more expansive. We wanted to put more variety into it and not limit ourselves to any one type of song. There are some really slow, beautiful songs; there are some nice, mid-tempo ones; and then there are three or four rockers."

Patti Smith joins the band on the album’s closing track, “Blue,” while Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder appears on "It Happened Today.”

The album was recorded in different cities -- Berlin, Nashville, New Orleans -- with breaks between to write and rewrite songs. "It's also fun for us to go to the cities we really love and spend some time," says Mills.

After a day's work in the studio, the band would go out to dinner. "It's really important to go out, get great food, shrug off the debris of the day, and just be friends and have a good time. In Berlin you drink beer and eat wurst. In New Orleans you eat Cajun food and drink Sazerac. In Nashville we ate a lot of fried chicken."

The band just released “R.E.M. Live From Austin, TX,” a new DVD taken from the band’s appearance on the acclaimed PBS Austin City Limits (ACL) television series.

R.E.M.’s March 13, 2008 ACL concert, which was edited into a single hour for the TV show, will be extended on the DVD, with more songs - including three that weren’t aired on the original broadcast.

R.E.M. finish new album

R.E.M. have just finished recording their 15th studio album, set for release next Spring.

The band worked on the new album with producer Jacknife Lee, who teamed up with R.E.M. on 2008’s “Accelerate” (he’s also worked with U2, Kasabian and Snow Patrol, among others).

R.E.M. and Lee had been recording in New Orleans at the Music Shed and in Berlin at the famed Hansa Studios, where several legendary albums, including David Bowie's "Heroes," U2's "Achtung Baby," and Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" were made; additional recording and mixing was done at the venerable Blackbird Studio in Nashville.

Just two weeks ago, R.E.M. manager Bertis Downs shared an update with fans. “Band finishing work on the record in Nashville. All going well, songs sounding great; the band, ably assisted by Jacknife and team, in the homestretch of making what sounds to me like a great R.E.M. record. And between New Orleans, Berlin, and Nashville, you would be hard-pressed to find three more musical and inspiring places in which to work.”

Acclaimed photographer Anton Corbijn shot R.E.M. while they were in Nashville. “Having Anton Corbijn in town was pretty special, as it has been a while since any of us has seen Mills, Stipe, and Buck through Anton's eyes and lens,” wrote Downs. “And Nashville provided some pretty characterful backdrops. It was certainly memorable working with Anton on the eve of the release of his heralded new movie, THE AMERICAN, which opened at the top of the Box Office its first week-- go see it! More later, but that's about it for now. Can't wait for people to hear this one.”
