Van Halen trying to ban Jump cover

Comedian Ricky Gervais is used to making people laugh, but it turns out Van Halen don’t share his sense of humor.

The Brit comedy icon says VH have tried to ban a cover of the band’s “Jump” by his TV pal Karl Pilkington.

The Sun reports Gervais shared the news at the launch of new Sky1 series “An Idiot Abroad: The Bucket List,” which stars Ricky and comedy partner Stephen Merchant, and features their pal Karl Pilkington.

The concept behind the series is to have Pilkington undertake a list of challenges you should do before you die, and one of them is to perform with an American “Glee-style” chorus club.

Karl sang VH’s “Jump,” but his rendition was reportedly so bad that the band tried to ban it from being broadcast.

Ricky said Karl was shaking before the performance and messed up the words.

"Van Halen are trying to put a stop on it, because it is that bad,” said Gervais. “But Sky have got a blanket agreement, so we can put it out in England, but we can't put it out in America, or on the DVD."

The first series of “An Idiot Abroad” attracted strong viewing figures for Sky1. Its return on September 23 sees Karl sent to South Pacific island Vanuatu to bungee jump with tribespeople.

No word from the VH camp on this, or their new single, or their new record, which reportedly has been recorded this year. The latest rumors say the album is mixed and will be mastered this month, but it remains a mystery as to when it will be released.

Below you can check out a “Jump” cover by Scottish New Wave band Aztec Camera that was released back in the mid-80s.
