More Van Halen talk from Sammy Hagar
It’s hard to tell who Sammy Hagar is promoting more these days – his current band, Chickenfoot, or his former group, Van Halen.
Fans are confused by the mixed messages being sent by the Red Rocker: as someone who’s worked hard to position himself as a nice guy, he’s constantly slamming Van Halen – a band he left 8 years ago - at every turn.
The latest Hagar rant is from a new interview with L.A. Weekly.
“The fact that they're [VH] out [on tour] right now, that's so great; I'm so happy that they're out doing it - but look how long it took,” says Sammy. “It's so dysfunctional and who knows how long it will last like this and I just can't be part of something like that.”
“I don't think I ever slowed down and stopped trying to prove something in that damn band 'til the reunion in '04, but by then it was too late,” continued Hagar. “Eddie was shot at that point, though I heard he's great now, and I'm really happy that he's supposedly sober and playing great and doing good. People think, ‘Oh you hate the guy.’ I don't hate the guy, I love the guy. I hate what he did in '04 to me on the reunion tour, but other than that I still love the guy.”
Described as a “straight shooter to a fault” by the Times writer, Sammy was asked if he was ever worried about being too honest in his 2011 book, “Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock.”
“There were a lot of times where I said, ‘I really shouldn't say this.’ But I felt that my fans, who've been with me all this time, deserved the real story; they need to hear why and understand why I am who I am and why I've become what I've become and how I did it and what I went through for it,” responded Hagar. “I just figured at this stage of my life I'm just gonna tell the whole story. A lot of it had to do with Van Halen; there was always a controversy of who said what and ‘He did this and he did that,’ and I wanted to tell the truth about all that.”
As straightforward as he was in “Red,” one of the “real” and “whole” stories Hagar never talks about is that the 2011 book was actually his toned down, second attempt at an autobiography. Sammy worked with author David Huff on “Red Storm Arising” but bailed on the project when he reportedly got nervous about potential lawsuits by some of the parties discussed in the project. Sammy went to court in May, 1999 to prevent the book’s release; two chapters were eventually leaked online (and can still be found). Read the MTV news report on the book’s fate here.

As to the first part of this "interview" I don't recall reading that Eddie or anyone from VH asking him to be a part of the Group again. And secondly,Sam's so full of shit! You can tell in every word he spews about the group, all he longs for is to be back in VH,HE CAN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT THEM! The truth is that as much as he's convinced himself that he was a huge Rock Star before and, since he got booted from the group,he was at his most popular and most known for his time with VH.He knows rather it be as a Solo act,Chickenfoot,Chicken wings or Chicken shit. He'll never see another #1 album or another sold out arena and that's what he craves the most!

Yep, me thinks he doth protest too much. Poor sonofagun… I really don't blame him for being bitter, or defensive or whatever this is, Eddie seems great now, but I know I thought he went insane and off the cliff for the last decade. Gotta be frustrating for the Red One though. But he needs to understand that Roth Era VH is in the same category as the Led Z., the Stones, the Beatles, … Perhaps the 2nd to last band to change the game, the last being Nirvana, and the Hagar VH was simply a pop construct no more substantial than Bon Jovi. Tough to swallow perhaps, but he needs to stop cashing in on the fact that he used to be in VH. Just focus on Chickenfoot, lord knows no one else is going to, and live the good life. He's earned that, but he hasn't earned any right to attach himself in any way to the greatest comeback in history. He stated that the return of VH would be a disaster, that the disc would be terrible…and he was just dead wrong, and now he's trying to backpedal. Everyone knows that… at this point he's starting to look a bit over the cliff...
Yeah, he seems obsessed with VH. Every day there's a news item about his continual non-stop VH commentary. Get a life Sammy...
Kudos to anti-MUSIC for pointing out the inconsistencies in Sammy's positions.
I'd almost feel bad for the guy if he didn't tell lies and half-truths all the time. This tour isn't the biggest thing for fans since the 2004 Van Hagar reunion; it's the biggest thing since the 2007 TOUR WITH ROTH. The Round Rocker pretends that 2007 tour never happened. That tour was awesome and sold out arenas left and right.
The 2004 Van Hagar tour, on the other hand, didn't sell well. That's because, as someone else points out in the comments, Van Hagar and Van Halen are 2 very different bands. Van Halen's music has aged really, really well. "Why Can't This Be Love?" hasn't.
Sammy comes off bitter, and is trying way too hard to convince everyone he's happy as a clam without Van Halen. Why not just let your music do the talking, Sam? Van Halen sure is. And they ain't talking a WORD about you, Chief. What does that tell you?!?!?!
Sammy is such a jealous baby. Get over it Sammy!!! DLR is 1,000,000 times better than you. Plus, EVH is the BEST guitar player ever. So two words,Sammy. SHUT UP.
