Rock News Artist of The Year No. 4 – ZZ TOP

ZZ Top ended 2019 with news of a spring 2020 residency at The Venetian Theatre inside The Venetian Las Vegas.

In January, guitarist Billy Gibbons revealed the band were planning to enter the recording studio this year with producer Rick Rubin for their first studio release since 2012’s “La Futura.”

In early February, ZZ Top announced a series of fall 2020 US dates with Def Leppard that would see the pair team up in September and October, while Gibbons was among the all-star lineup for a concert tribute to Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green in London.

The group prepared for the late February home release of their documentary, “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas”, by sharing performance footage of their 1971 classic, “Brown Sugar”, and 1973’s “La Grange” from the package.

In March, the band postponed the Las Vegas residency as the pandemic shut down the live music industry, while Gibbons debuted a performance video for “Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’”, a track from his 2018 album, “The Big Bad Blues.”

By August, ZZ Top and Def Leppard cancelled their planned fall series of shows; the following month, they streaming video of a 2007 performance of their 1975 classic, “Heard It On The X”, as a preview to a vinyl reissue of their 2008 package, “Live From Texas.”

Last month, the Texas trio’s documentary picked up a 2021 Grammy Award nomination in the Best Music Film category, where it will compete during the late January event.

As the year came to a close, news broke that Gibbons’ appearance as part of the Peter Green tribute show will be screened in cinemas early next year.
