Carlos Santana postpones shows after collapsing at San Antonio soundcheck

Carlos Santana has postponed a pair of shows after collapsing during a soundcheck prior to a concert in San Antonio, TX on April 22.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the guitarist canceled his appearance at San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre on Tuesday after he suffered a non-life-threatening medical emergency. The San Antonio Fire Department responded to the concert hall to a “report of an elderly patient who had reportedly fainted,” a spokesperson confirmed to The Times on Wednesday. That patient was transported to a hospital.

Santana’s manager, Michael Vrionis, issued a statement on Wednesday, saying the icon “is postponing his Oneness Tour 2025 show at Smart Financial Center, tonight (Wednesday, April 23, 2025) in Sugar Land, Texas. Mr. Santana has tested positive for Covid and is resting at his hotel.

“As some of you are aware, we postponed last night’s show in San Antonio. Unfortunately, out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to also postpone this evening's show in Sugar Land. Carlos experienced dehydration yesterday, and has since tested positive for Covid. I am happy to report that Carlos is doing well and will be back on his US Tour this Friday in Thackerville, OK.

“We appreciate everyone’s well wishes and concern. Carlos is looking forward to seeing you all very soon." Please hang onto your tickets - we will advise on the rescheduled show date as soon as possible.”

Santana recently released a new retrospective album, “Sentient”, via Candid Records.

The project features 11 tunes – three of them previously unreleased – and delivers collaborations with Michael Jackson, Miles Davis, Paolo Rustichelli, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels and Cindy Blackman Santana, among others….including the lead track, "Please Don't Take Your Love," that paired Santana with Smokey Robinson.

Carlos Santana announces new retrospective album Sentient

Carlos Santana will release a new retrospective album, “Sentient”, on March 28 via Candid Records.

The project features 11 tracks – three of them previously unreleased – and delivers collaborations with Michael Jackson, Miles Davis, Paolo Rustichelli, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels and Cindy Blackman Santana, among others….including the lead track, "Please Don't Take Your Love," that paired Santana with Smokey Robinson.

The original version – featured on Robinson's 2009 album, “Time Flies When You're Having Fun” – saw Santana contrast Robinson's shimmering vibrato with searing, soul-shaking soloing. The alternate take on Sentient is no less emotionally wrenching, but as Santana notes, it boasts a never-before-heard guitar performance.

"I went to the studio and did my own thing. I said, 'Let's just roll it'”, recalls Santana. “I did another take with Smokey sort of guiding me. Smokey loved them both, so he wound up combining the two. What's on Sentient is the first version."

Santana was inspired to compile the remastered material and sequence it in a way that allows a new and dramatic story to emerge.

"I'm always driven by passion, emotion and inner instinct," he says. "When I first heard these tracks floating around in the house, I said, 'Why don't we put these all in one place?'"

Santana will support “Sentient” on his 2025 Oneness Tour, with North American dates starting April 16 in Highland, CA and will be followed a summer series across the UK and Europe starting June 9 in Lodz, Poland.

Carlos Santana shares trailer for Carlos documentary

Carlos Santana is sharing a video trailer for the upcoming global cinema premiere of “Carlos”, a new documentary about his life and legendary career.

Directed by Rudy Valdez and set to premiere in theaters next month, the film combines new interviews with Santana and his family; extraordinary, never-before-seen archival footage, including home videos recorded by Santana himself; concert footage; behind-the-scenes moments; interviews with music industry luminaries and collaborators, such as Clive Davis, Rob Thomas and more.

An influential early believer in the guitarist was legendary San Francisco-based promoter Bill Graham.

“Do you believe in magic?” says Santana in the preview clip. “They said, ‘hey, we want to take you to this place, it’s called The Fillmore. Nothing better.’ Bill Graham came to me and says ‘You’re going to open up for The Who, Steve Miller and Howlin’ Wolf.’

“Magic is when you command the elements to capture people’s hearts.”

“Carlos” will launch in theaters with a three-day premiere event “Carlos: The Santana Journey Global Premiere.” On Saturday, September 23, Sunday, September 24, and Wednesday, September 27 only, screenings include the Carlos documentary plus exclusive introductory content featuring Santana and director Valdez (The Sentence, We Are: The Brooklyn Saints).

Following the premiere screenings, “Carlos” will begin its general theatrical release on Friday, September 29.

Tickets for Carlos: The Santana Journey Global Premiere are now available at carlosfilm.com.

Carlos Santana documentary Carlos coming to theaters

“Carlos”, a documentary tracing the legendary career of Carlos Santana, will premiere in theaters next month.

Directed by Rudy Valdez, the project – which premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Festival – combines new interviews with Santana and his family; extraordinary, never-before-seen archival footage, including home videos recorded by Santana himself; concert footage; behind-the-scenes moments; interviews with music industry luminaries and collaborators, such as Clive Davis, Rob Thomas and more.

“At the age of 5, in his native Mexico, he learned to play the violin,” outlines a synopsis for the film. “At 8, he developed a lifelong love for the guitar. At 14, he honed those guitar virtuoso skills and his performance style working a street musician, starting his own band long after, while still a teenager. And at 22 — just before his first album was released to acclaim — Carlos Santana became one of the major discoveries of Woodstock, anchoring the famous festival’s second afternoon on August 16, 1969.

“A music industry legend for 50 years and a 10-time Grammy-winning global sensation, Santana continues to be one of the music world’s premiere artists, blending jazz, blues, and the Mariachi sound with a rock n’ roll spirituality and a sense of connection to music’s primal connection to our deepest emotions.”

Tickets for Carlos: The Santana Journey Global Premiere will go on sale beginning Thursday, August 24 at carlosfilm.com.

Santana’s latest studio album is 2021’s “Blessings And Miracles.”

Carlos Santana recovering following collapse during Michigan concert

Carlos Santana is recovering following a collapse onstage during a July 5 show at the Pine Knob Music Theatre in Michigan.

Representatives for the guitarist announced Carlos “was over-taken by heat exhaustion and dehydration” during the concert, before being transported to the emergency department at McLaren Clarkston for observation, where they reported he was “doing well” just hours after the incident.

“Hi Everyone! Carlos & I thank you so much for your prayers, love, care & concern for him!,” shared his wife and drummer, Cindy Blackman Santana, on July 6. “Please know that he’s resting and doing very well! He was diagnosed with heat exhaustion & dehydration… it was 100 degrees on stage and 114 under the lights so that coupled with not enough water is what caused the issue. He’ll be as good as new soon! Thank you again and we love you!”

Carlos later shared an update on social media, saying “to one and all: thank you for your precious prayers. Cindy and I we are good just taking it easy. Forgot to eat and drink water so I dehydrated and passed out. Blessings and Miracles to you all.”

Following the onstage incident, a Santana show initially scheduled at Star Lake Pavilion outside Pittsburgh, PA, on Wednesday, July 6, was rescheduled to Thursday, August 4; all previously purchased tickets will be honored on the new date. Earth, Wind & Fire will not be part of the newly rescheduled date. Instead, the new date will be an Evening with Santana.

On the road in support of his band’s latest album, “Blessings And Miracles”, Santana’s next show is scheduled for July 8 in Noblesville, IN.

Santana and Chris Stapleton debut video for new single Joy

Santana is debuting a video for “Joy”, a track featuring Chris Stapleton that appears on the band’s latest album, “Blessings And Miracles.”

“I was very intrigued to work with Chris,” Carlos Santana explains. “We talked on the phone about the Covid situation and how there's so much fear in the world, and I said, 'We need to create music as a healing force. We must bring hope and courage and disinfect twisted minds infected with darkness.'

"That gave him the ammunition to write such incredible words. Somewhere I said, 'flying on the wings of angels,' so it's a collaboration. And what an incredible song it is. The choir in it - it's like the Staple Singers."

“Blessings And Miracles” sees Santana joined by an all-star lineup that includes Rob Thomas, Steve Winwood, Chick Corea, Corey Glover and Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, among others.

The band are currently playing dates as part of the “An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live” shows at the House of Blues Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

Unseen Rolling Stones Altamont Free Concert footage discovered

image courtesy of the Library Of Congress

Unseen footage of performances from The Rolling Stones' infamous 1969 Altamont Free Concert has been discovered amongst material collected by the US Library Of Congress.

The research library is streaming a 30-minute video – without companion audio – that features live images of all five acts who performed, including Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the headliners.

According to >Mike Mashon, head of the Moving Image Section, an archivist/collector named Rick Prelinger acquired a cache of reels in 1996 from Palmer Films, a San Francisco company that was going out of business; the Library then acquired the roughly 200,000 reels in the Prelinger Collection in 2002.

A technician working on the collection came recently across two reels of silent 8mm video and, after it was scanned for 2K digitization by the film preservation laboratory, the Library discovered the Altamont Speedway event material.

While some material from the Altamont Speedway concert was featured in the Stones’ 1970 documentary, “Gimme Shelter”, this video gives viewers a different perspective of the event.

“Many people know the ‘Gimme Shelter’ documentary pretty well, but there’s a lot more in this home movie,” explains Mashon. “Although the footage is silent, we were all thrilled to see close-up footage of concert performers who were cut from the film, such as Carlos Santana and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. (CNSY wasn’t pleased with their performance and refused to let the Maysles include them.) It was especially great to see Gram Parsons fronting the Flying Burrito Brothers, since you only see the back of his head in ‘Gimme Shelter.’ Even better, there are good shots of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards off-stage watching him perform!

“The second reel is from the Stones’ evening performance, which, while it captures some of chaos so memorably seen in ‘Gimme Shelter,’ doesn’t add anything to our understanding of the death of Meredith Hunter at the hands of a member of the Hells Angels.”

In an effort to trace the video’s origins, the Library contacted Prelinger, who was unaware of its existence, with the Library now working on the theory that the home movies were dropped off at Palmer Labs and just never picked up by its owner.

The Altamont Free Concert took place on December 6, 1969 as the final show of the Stones’ US tour in support of their “Let It Bleed” album. Originally planned as a US West coast version of “Woodstock”, organizers were unable to secure their original location, San Jose State University's practice field, and two other back-ups - Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and the Sears Point Raceway near Sonoma – before moving the event to the speedway location just two days before the show.

An estimated crowd of 300,000 attended the free concert, which saw the Hells Angels hired as security based on the low-rise location of the stage, which would have easily been accessible by fans. Historical reports indicate physical encounters involving gang members and members of the audience that escalated throughout the day and created an environment that led to the Grateful Dead’s decision not to appear ahead of the Stones, whose own performance was marked with crowd violence that saw a fan stabbed to death during a confrontation over a gun – as presented in the “Gimme Shelter” documentary.

If you experience any issues watching the newly-discovered Altamont Free Concert footage embedded below, you can view it at the Library Of Congress here.

Carlos Santana recovering from unscheduled heart procedure

Carlos Santana is recovering from unscheduled heart procedure.

“Just wanted to share with you some clarity with specificity what’s been going on with my physicality,” says Santana in a personal video message. “There’s been rumors flying around here and there about this and that. So, I’m here to just crystallize and make it clear. Last Saturday I had an incident where I asked my wife Cindy to take me to the hospital ’cause I had this thing happening in my chest.

“So, when we went there we found out that I needed to take care of it. So I am, and so I’m going to be taking time out for a little bit to make sure I replenish and I rest and catch up with my health so that when I play for you, I would play the way I’m used to and give you 150 percent. I wouldn’t show up unless I can do that.

“So other than that,”
he adds, “I hope you and your family are enjoying good health, peace of mind, and joy. I know I will. Thank you for being a fan, and your oneness, and your caring. Peace.”

Santana’s health issue has resulted in the cancellation of all December 2021 dates of “An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live” at the House of Blues stage inside Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, which was set to resume this week.

“Carlos is doing fantastic and is anxious to be back on stage soon,” explains Michael Vrionis, President, Universal Tone Management. “He profoundly regrets that this ‘speed bump’ necessitated the cancellation of his upcoming performances. He is looking forward to seeing you all very soon.”

The Las Vegas series is currently scheduled to resume in late January.

Santana released his latest album, “Blessings And Miracles”, in October.

Santana releases Move video featuring Rob Thomas

Carlos Santana has released a video for “Move”, his collaboration with Rob Thomas that was recently issued as the lead single to the guitarist’s forthcoming album, “Blessings And Miracles.”

The pair previously scored a huge hit in 1999 with “Smooth” from Santana’s “Supernatural” record.

“‘Move’ came about very much like how ‘Smooth’ happened,” explained Santana recently. “It was like divine intelligence behind the scenes, and I just knew I had to record it with Rob. The song is about awakening your molecules. Ignite and activate yourself – you know, move. When Rob and I work together, we have a sound that’s splendiferous.”

“Move” features additional vocals by US rockers American Authors.

Due October 15, “Blessings And Miracles” sees Santana joined by a variety of artists, including Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Steve Winwood, Corey Glover, and Chris Stapleton, among others.

Following a seris of US dates, Santana will continue his Las Vegas residency at the House of Blues Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in early November.

Santana streams Whiter Shade Of Pale cover featuring Steve Winwood

Carlos Santana is streaming his cover of the 1967 Procol Harum classic, “Whiter Shade Of Pale”, featuring vocals by Steve Winwood.

The tune is the latest preview to the guitarist’s forthcoming album, “Blessings And Miracles”, which sees Santana joined by an all-star lineup that includes Rob Thomas, Chris Stapleton, Chick Corea, Rick Rubin, Corey Glover, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, and Journey drummer Narada Michael Walden, among others.

Santana recalls how he and Winwood were at a show in London’s Hyde Park, and he went up to him and suggested they record the song.

“I said, ‘You and I have to do it, but we’re going to do it very sexy, like a Hare Krishna but with congas.’ I played the components in his ear,” Santana continues, “and he said, ‘I hear it, Carlos. You’re right.’ So that’s what we did – it’s Santana, Cuban, Puerto Rican in an African way. And man, you talk about sexy. Steve’s voice is so sexy and beautiful.”

“Carlos has been doing what I’ve been trying to do for the last 50 years, namely combining elements of rock, jazz, folk, and Latin Afro-Caribbean music,”
adds Winwood. “Carlos’ genius comes in large part from a wonderful combination of rock music with Latin-Cuban rhythms. I’ve played with Carlos on numerous occasions over the past fifty years and I’m very excited to be working with him again still.”

Due October 15, the project marks the follow-up to 2019’s “Africa Speaks.”

“The title of this album comes from my belief that we’re born with heavenly powers that allows us to create blessings and miracles,” Santana explains. “The world programs you to be unworthy of those gifts, but we have to utilize light, spirit and soul – they’re indestructible and immutable. Those are the three main elements on this album.”

Santana is currently playing dates across the US in support of “Blessings And Miracles.”

Rob Thomas reunites with Carlos Santana at We Love NYC concert

Rob Thomas reunited with Carlos Santana at the August 21 “We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert" in New York’s Central Park.

The Matchbox Twenty singer joined the Santana for “Move” – the lead single from the guitarist’s newly-announced forthcoming album, “Blessings And Miracles” – before delivering the pair’s 1999 smash hit, “Smooth.”

Prior to Thomas’s arrival at center stage, Santana was joined by Wyclef Jean for the “Supernatural” track, “Maria, Maria.”

The event to celebrate New York City’s re-opening and comeback followed more than a year of pandemic-related closures; the concert was shut down after only a few hours due to severe weather ahead of Hurricane Henri’s anticipated landfall the next day.

Due October 15, “Blessings And Miracles” will sees Santana joined by a variety of artists, including Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Steve Winwood, Corey Glover, and Chris Stapleton, among others.

This week, Santana will resume his residency at the House of Blues Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, before launching the Blessings And Miracles US tour in Atlantic City, NJ on September 11.

Carlos Santana announces Splendiferous Santana streaming compilation

Carlos Santana will launch a new streaming compilation and playlist entitled “Splendiferous Santana” on July 2.

The iconic guitarist has personally handpicked 30 of his favorite tracks for the project, which showcases highlights from his 2003-2019 musical output spanning 2003-2019.

In the wake of his 1999 smash, “Supernatural”, Santana went on to release seven albums over the past two decades – from 2002’s “Shaman” to 2019’s US Top 5 set, “Africa Speaks.”

When choosing his favorite tracks for “Splendiferous Santana”, Carlos selected nine songs each from “Shaman” and 2005’s “All That I Am”, six from 2014’s “Corazón”, three from 2007's “Ultimate Santana”, two from “Africa Speaks” and one from 2012's “Shape Shifter.”

Guest artists collaborating with Santana on the “Splendiferous Santana” compilation include Plácido Domingo ("Novus"), Ismaila and Touré Kunda ("Con Santana"), will.i.am ("I Am Somebody"), Samuel Rosa (Saideira), Los Fabulosos Cadillacs ("Mal Bicho"), Macy Gray ("Amoré (Sexo)"), Seal ("You Are My Kind"), Chad Kroeger ("Into the Night"), Sean Paul and Joss Stone ("Cry Baby Cry"), Anthony Hamilton ("Twisted"), Musiq ("Nothing At All"), Citizen Cope ("Sideways"), Alejandro Lerner ("Hoy Es Adios"), Diego Torres ("Amor Correspondido"), Kirk Hammett ("Trinity"), Tina Turner ("The Game of Love"), Gloria Estefan ("Beijo de Longe"), Romeo Santos ("Margarita"), Bo Bice ("Brown Skin Girl"), Steven Tyler ("Just Feel Better"), Juanes ("La Flaca") and Buika ("Yo Me Lo Merezco," "Candombe Cumbele").

“Splendiferous is a vision collection of incredible songs that I feel needed to be shared with the listeners’ heart,” says Santana. “I personally compiled the songs in a flow that speaks to me and tells a story, outside of time. The songs are assigned and designed to unite and celebrate humanity and bring healing and intimacy. I invite you to turn it up and join us for a glorious ride and enjoy ‘The Summer of Santana!’ It’s going to be Splendiferous!”

Santana recently announced fall US dates for his “Blessings And Miracles” tour; the 3-week, 15-show run – which will mark the guitarist’s return to the stage after a year off – will open in Atlantic City, NJ on September 11 and run into early October.
