Roger Daltrey announces US summer tour

The Who frontman Roger Daltrey has announced a run of U.S. solo tour dates, celebrating his return two years after his widely praised Semi-Acoustic 2024 Summer outing, and well-rested from the acclaimed Who farewell tour.

Dubbed “A Great Night Out”, the series will kick off August 23rd at the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, AZ, and run through September, including a rare Daltrey performance at New York City's The Town Hall on September 27th and wrapping up in Medford, MA at the Chevalier Theatre on September 29th.

"Well it's one more for the road,” says Daltrey. “After finishing The Who's final tour of the US, it's time for me as a solo artist to possibly do the same. After touring solo with different bands of musicians for the last 17 years, a less grueling life becomes more attractive, I'll see. With my present line up of nine musicians, I have this opportunity to see your beautiful country and enjoy the hospitality you have shown me over so many years. I'll be off the backing tracks and always searching for different soundscapes to present the songs. It's a lot of fun and gives me the chance to have a Great Night Out."

Fans will have access to presale tickets with PASSWORD: GREATNIGHT beginning Wednesday, May 13 at 10:00 AM local time. Local presales begin Thursday, May 14 at 10:00 AM local time until 11:59 PM local time. Public on sale starts on Friday, May 15 at 10:00 AM local time.

The Who are sharing a preview of their forthcoming release, “Live At Eden Project.”

Due May 29, the set captures a July 2023 performance at Cornwall's iconic Eden Project, which saw the band joined by the Heart of England Philharmonic Orchestra and fusing classic rock intensity with orchestral grandeur alongside the band’s iconic catalog.

Roger Daltrey of The Who knighted by Prince William

Sir Roger Daltrey was knighted by HRH The Prince of Wales during a December 10 ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Sir Roger told the press after the investiture ceremony that he is accepting the honour on behalf of all those at the Teenage Cancer Trust.

He said the knighthood is an “incredible honour”, adding: “For me, it’s a double honour because I’m getting it for my work with Teenage Cancer Trust. “So personally, it’s wonderful. But for Teenage Cancer Trust, I’m accepting it on behalf of all those people who may never get an honour and without whom we never would have made the success we have made of our charity. It’s important to me that I make them realize they are really appreciated.”

“It is an incredible honour,” he added. “I was born in the Second World War and grew up in the streets in London, so for a kid like me, achieving this, it’s a dream.”

“It is a wonderful honour for me and especially for Teenage Cancer Trust,” shared Daltrey when the news was first announced in June. “I accept this award not only for myself but on behalf of all the unsung heroes who have given their energy towards making the Teenage Cancer Trust the success it has become. The likes of The Who and their fans, Angie Jenkison, Lindsay Hughes, Des Murphy, Rob Ballantine and the late Chris York are some of many who have done so much to elevate the charity, to the point where it now has 28 specialist units in NHS hospitals across the U.K.”

Pete Townshend guests on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Pete Townshend was a featured guest on the November 12 edition of the CBS-TV series The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The rock icon first appeared on the episode as a guest performer sitting in with the show's band before an extended conversation with Colbert that touched on The Who's farewell tour, Pete's difficult childhood, the incredible amount of unheard music in his vault, and the origins of works like "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia."

Pete's latest musical adventure, "Quadrophenia, A Rock Ballet," is at New York City Center this Friday through Sunday this week.

“Who Are You”, The Who's eighth studio album, was recently released in a suite of formats – including a Super Deluxe Edition. The 2025 set features over 70 unreleased tracks, including never-before-heard versions of the title track, newly-mixed live tracks from their first tour without original drummer Keith Moon, and candid recordings of the band rehearsing in 1977 and 1978.

The Who completed its The Song Is Over North America Farewell Tour in early October.

Roger Daltrey of The Who has been Knighted by King Charles.

The rocker has been recognized for services to music and charity, particularly his work raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

“It’s with the greatest pleasure we’re delighted to announce that Sir Roger Daltrey CBE has been recognised with a Knighthood in HM The King’s Birthday Honours,” BPI CEO and BPI Chair Dr Jo Twist OBE and YolanDa Brown OBE DL said. “It’s richly deserved not just for his remarkable contribution to British music and culture for over half a century, but for the tens of millions of pounds that his relentless fundraising and brilliant live performances have generated for Teenage Cancer Trust among other causes.

“Sir Roger is a true inspiration and we salute him and all the other honourees from the worlds of music and the creative arts for enriching our lives with their brilliant human artistry and achievements.”

The Who fire drummer Zak Starkey for second time in a month

The Who has fired drummer Zak Starkey for a second time in a month ahead of their farewell tour of North America this summer.

The Who originally released a statement on April 16 saying “The band made a collective decision to part ways with Zak after this round of shows at the Royal Albert Hall. They have nothing but admiration for him and wish him the very best for his future.”

“I’m very proud of my near thirty years with The Who,” shared Starkey in a written statement of his own. “After playing those songs with the band for so many decades, I’m surprised and saddened anyone would have an issue with my performance that night, but what can you do?....Twenty-nine years at any job is a good old run, and I wish them the best.”

Who associate Brian Kehew posted behind the scenes details of the shows on his regular Backstage Blog, which featured a production change that saw Daltrey not using his regular in-ear monitors, which appeared to have caused some hearing issues for the rocker during the March 30 performance, which included a series of missteps on some songs and of couple of restarts, including the live debut of the 1971 track, “The Song Is Over.”

“To sing that song, I do need to hear the key,” said Daltrey. “And I can’t hear. There’s no pitch here. I just hear drums, ‘boom boom boom.’ I can’t sing to that. I’m sorry guys. We’ll try one more even though it’s getting late”; the band ran through it a second time and the singer had no trouble.

On April 19, The Who released an extended statement that began “News Flash! Who Backs Zak! He's not being asked to step down from The Who. There have been some communication issues, personal and private on all sides, that needed to be dealt with, and these have been aired happily.

“Roger and I would like Zak to tighten up his latest evolved drumming style to accommodate our non-orchestral line up and he has readily agreed….“Maybe we didn’t put enough time into sound checks, giving us problems on stage. The sound in the centre of the stage is always the most difficult to work with. Roger did nothing wrong but fiddle with his in-ear monitors. Zak made a few mistakes and he has apologized. Albeit with a rubber duck drummer. We are a family, this blew up very quickly and got too much oxygen. It’s over. We move forward now with optimism and fire in our bellies.”

As the dust tried to settle, Daltrey and Townshend fired Starkey a second time, saying “The Who are heading for retirement, whereas Zak is 20 years younger and has a great future with his new band and other exciting projects. He needs to devote all his energy into making it all a success. We both wish him all the luck in the world. Scott Devours – Who fans will know him from Roger’s solo shows – will be replacing Zak. We hope all our fans will welcome him.”

Starkey issued another response to the pair’s statement, writing "I was fired two weeks after reinstatement and asked to make a statement saying I had quit the who to pursue my other musical endevours this would be a lie. I love the who and would never had quit. So I didn't make the statement ....quitting the who would also have let down the countless amazing people who stood up for me (thank you all a million times over and more) thru the weeks of mayhem of me going 'in an out an in an out an in an out like a bleedin squeezebox x"

The Who announce farewell North American tour

The Who have announced a final farewell tour of North America as part of a truly grand finale of their illustrious six-decade career.

The legendary duo of Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey will launch The Song Is Over North America Farewell Tour (named after The Who's 1971 classic song) on August 16 in Sunrise, FL, with dates wrapping up in Las Vegas, NV at the end of September.

"Well, all good things must come to an end,” says Townshend. “It is a poignant time. For me, playing to American audiences and those in Canada has always been incredible. The warmth and engagement of those audiences began back in 1967 with hippies smoking dope, sitting on their blankets and listening deeply and intensely. Music was everywhere. We all felt equal. Today, Roger and I still carry the banner for the late Keith Moon and John Entwistle and of course, all of our longtime Who fans.

“I must say that although the road has not always been enjoyable for me, it is usually easy: the best job I could ever have had. I keep coming back. Every time I do, I meet new fans and feel new energy. Roger and I are in a good place, despite our age, eager to throw our weight behind this fond farewell to all our faithful fans, and hopefully to new ones who might jump in to see what they have been missing for the last 57 years. This tour will be about fond memories, love and laughter. Make sure you join in."

"Every musician's dream in the early 60's was to make it big in the US charts,” adds Daltrey. “For the Who, that dream came true in 1967 and our lives were changed forever. The warmth of the American audiences over the years have been inspirational to me, and reflect the feeling I remember getting after hearing the first rock records coming across the radio. Musical freedom! Rock gave us a feeling of generational rebellion. To me, America has always been great. The cultural differences had a huge impact on me, this was the land of the possible. It's not easy to end the big part of my life that touring with The Who has been. Thanks for being there for us and look forward to seeing you one last time."

The Who honored with Royal Mail stamp series

The Who is being honored by the Royal Mail with a special set of stamps as the UK band marks its 60th anniversary.

Royal Mail has revealed details of 12 stamps which feature images of some of The Who’s most popular album covers and group shots from some of their live performances.

The album covers are “My Generation” from 1965 designed by David Wedgbury; “Tommy” from 1969 designed by Michael McInnerney; “Who’s Next” from 1971 designed by Ethan Russell and Kosh; “Quadrophenia” from 1973 designed by Graham Hughes; “Who Are You” from 1978 designed by Terry O’Neill and Bill Smith; “Face Dances” from 1981 designed by Sir Peter Blake; “Endless Wire” from 2006 designed by Richard Evans; and “WHO” from 2019 designed by Sir Peter Blake.

A miniatures sheet features two group publicity shots and two images of the band’s live performances at the Marquee Club in London in 1967 and the Kings Hall in Belle Vue, Manchester, in 1973.

Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon formed The Who in 1964 (before that they were The Detours and, for a short while The High Numbers); within five years, they went from performing club shows to headlining the Woodstock festival in the US and becoming the biggest box-office draw in the world.

“The artwork on the album sleeves was almost as important to the success of the record as the music,” recalls Daltrey. “It’s great to be reminded of them.”

“Stamp! Stamp! Stamp! It’s what I’ve done on stage all my life, sometimes in the air,” adds Townshend. “At last my stamping, and that of my buddy Roger, has been honoured properly, and will help letters, parcels and birthday cards travel through time and space, just as we have.”

“With their truly original sound and effortless ability to mix musical styles, The Who are rock royalty,” says David Gold, Royal Mail’s director of external affairs and policy. These stamps celebrate one of the UK’s much-loved and revered musical bands who have achieved global popularity for six decades.”

Roger Daltrey – legendary rock icon and co-founder of one of music’s most inspirational and influential forces, The Who, will be returning to the States on a special solo tour this June, presenting a mostly acoustic set of Who gems, rarities, solo nuggets and other surprises with an intimate rock-based band and setting as well as answering questions from the audience, kicking off this very exclusive set of shows on June 12 at Virginia’s renowned Wolf Trap at Filene Center.

The nine-city run will continue throughout the month of June, wrapping up on June 29 at The Pavilion at Ravinia in Highland Park, IL.

The unique venues and amphitheaters Daltrey has chosen for his summer run will showcase Roger’s acoustic interpretations of his extraordinary canon of Who songs and solo work, supported by a hand-picked ensemble of musicians.

Daltrey’s return to the States follows The Who’s incredibly successful The Who Hits Back! US tour of 2022, with the band’s incomparable frontman drawing praise from all media platforms. The rockeralso brought a highly successful solo tour to the States in 2018 via a 10-city run that showcased The Who’s legendary rock opera "Tommy", supported by full orchestral backing.

Never content to rest on his laurels, the adventurous artist will continue to peel back the layers on his upcoming June tour, excited about expressing more musical shades of his solo palette, which he has shared with audiences throughout his career.

Also known to be one of rock’s more candid, straight-shooters, the working-class Daltrey (originally from London’s Shepherd’s Bush) will answer questions from the audience during the shows, sharing anecdotes and offering up uniquely tailored renditions of songs seldom performed live either by The Who or Daltrey.

The Who is sharing a video preview of the Super Deluxe Edition of “Who’s Next/Life House” ahead of its release on September 15.

The expanded package presents the suite of songs by The Who on which, more than half a century ago, Pete Townshend foresaw the invention of the internet, of virtual reality and pandemic-style lockdown, and will now be heard as he intended for the first time.

The set – which offers 155 tracks, of which 89 are previously-unreleased and 57 feature fresh remixes – will present the long-sought, complete picture of Townshend's vision of songs that are featured, in their many stages of development, from the abandoned, audacious “Life House” project, started in 1969 as a follow-up to The Who's epic “Tommy”, and from the undisputed rock classic of 1971 that it evolved into, “Who's Next.”

“The Who were our role models,” shares Bono of U2 in the preview video; Bruce Springsteen is quoted as saying “I always found myself there somewhere in their music”, while high-profile enthusiast Eddie Vedder adds “The Who changed my world.”

“Who’s Next/Life House” will be available in multiple vinyl and CD formats, among others, as well as the special Super Deluxe Edition which includes a 172-page graphic novel.

The Who will release a Super Deluxe Edition of “Who’s Next/Life House” on September 15.

The set – which offers 155 tracks, of which 89 are previously-unreleased and 57 feature fresh remixes – will present the long-sought, complete picture of Townshend's vision of songs that are featured, in their many stages of development, from the abandoned, audacious “Life House” project, started In 1969 as a follow-up to The Who's epic “Tommy”, and from the undisputed rock classic of 1971 that it evolved into, “Who's Next.”

In his introduction to the new editions, Townshend describes “Life House” as “a portentous polemic about the coming of a nation beaten down by climate issues and pollution.” He then explains how “an opportunist and autocratic government enforce a national lock-down in which every person is hooked up to an entertainment grid.” Music itself then becomes an inconvenient diversion, “a very real distraction to the subjugation of the population in suits,” with fascinating consequences. Songs that depicted a dystopian world in which faceless corporations control our lives may have been fiction at the time, but they have come to be more like documentary.

The unfulfilled project, which Townshend conceived as one part film script and one part blueprint for a live musical experiment, brought him to the edge of a breakdown. But, as he writes, “some wonderful music came from the project, and the idea has always held me in thrall, partly because so many of the strands of the fiction seem to be coming true.”

Listeners will hear, for the first time, how that concept folded into “Who's Next”, widely regarded as not only one of the greatest albums in the band's catalogue, but a seminal moment in music history.

The Super Deluxe edition of "Who’s Next/Life House" will contain 10 CDs, all remastered from the original tapes by longtime Who engineer Jon Astley, plus a Blu-ray Audio disc with newly-created Atmos & 5.1 surround mixes of Who's Next and 14 bonus tracks by in-demand artist and producer Steven Wilson.

The box set also contains a 100-page hardback book, a graphic novel, posters and programs from various shows from the era, a collectible four pin button set, and an 8” x 10” colour photo of The Who with printed autographs.

The album will also be available as limited edition 4-LP and 3-LP sets, featuring, respectively, the first-ever complete release of the San Francisco concert from 1971 and vinyl replicas of Townshend’s original “Life House.” The original “Who’s Next” album will also be available as a 1-LP half-speed remaster completed at Abbey Road Studios, and in other exclusive single vinyl versions.

This past spring, the iconic UK band released “The Who With Orchestra Live At Wembley”, which captures a 2019 show at the famed London stadium that also marked their first headline performance there in 40 years.

The Who are streaming “The Who With Orchestra Live At Wembley” album in sync with its recent release.

The project captures the band’s July 6, 2019 show at the famed London stadium, which marked their first headline performance there in 40 years.

The event was the only UK date on The Who’s “Moving On” Tour and featured the band accompanied by an over 50-piece orchestra performing classic tracks from “Quadrophenia”, “Tommy”, “Who's Next”, “Who Are You” and more, as well as tracks from their 2019 album, simply titled “Who” - their first studio release in 13 years.

Performing with The Who and an orchestra had been a long-held ambition for singer Roger Daltrey.

"Just because it is The Who with an orchestra, in no way does it compromise the way Pete and I deliver our music,” says the rocker. “It is full throttle Who with horns and bells on."

“Roger christened this tour Moving On!,” adds Pete Townshend. “I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose."

“The Who With Orchestra Live At Wembley” is now available in multiple formats, including as a limited edition yellow, orange and red 3LP set, triple black vinyl, and a 2CD / Blu-Ray set which features the audio remixed in Dolby Atmos; in addition, all formats feature a booklet with unseen photos from the show.

The second single from “It’s Hard” is one of twenty songs the band delivered during their only UK date on the “Moving On” Tour, which saw them accompanied by the Isobel Griffiths Orchestra while performing material from all eras in the group’s history.

The Who announce UK tour dates

The Who has announced dates for a summer tour of the UK.

The 3-week series will see The Who performing with a full orchestra each night with shows from 6th to 23rd July in Hull, Edinburgh, London, Derby, Badminton, Durham, St Helens and Brighton. Joining them will be UB40 featuring Ali Campbell across all regional shows except for The O2 London and Edinburgh Castle dates.

The 2023 UK shows include Edinburgh Castle, the band’s first show in the Scottish capital in over 40 years as well as shows in Derby, their first since 1966, The O2 London, Durham and Brighton Cricket grounds. The gigs follow last year’s highly acclaimed The Who Hits Back! tour of the US, where the band shared the with some of the finest orchestras in America.

“Having not toured the UK for six years,” says Roger Daltrey, “it’s great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me. This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights.”

A pre-sale for members of The Who Fan Club begins Wednesday, February 1 at 10.00am local time and runs until Friday, February 3 at 10.00am local time, which is when general public tickets will go on sale.

The Who are calling upon fans to add an optional £1 donation onto their ticket price at point of sale in support of Teenage Cancer Trust. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey are longstanding supporters and Roger has been the driving force behind Teenage Cancer Trust’s Royal Albert Hall concerts since they began in 2000. The Who share Royal Albert Hall performance on The Late Show

The Who shared video of a Royal Albert Hall performance of their 1971 classic, ‘Behind Blue Eyes”, on the April 15 episode of CBS-TV’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The band can be seen delivering the “Who’s Next” single as part of a recent March 25 acoustic set at the iconic UK venue during a week-long series of concerts in support of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend have long been supporters of the charity, which creates world-class cancer services for young people in the UK, providing life-changing care and support so they don’t have to face cancer alone.

The week-long benefit shows – which began on March with the UK band Don Broco – also featured performances from Madness, Liam Gallagher and Ed Sheeran, among others.

The Who’s appearance on the late night CBS program comes ahead of the launch of the band’s North American tour in Hollywood, FL on April 22.

“The Who Hits Back!” series will see Daltrey and Townshend return to the stage alongside some of the finest orchestras in the U.S. and Canada, under the direction of conductor Keith Levenson.

The Who to perform on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

The Who will perform on the Friday, April 15 episode of CBS-TV’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The appearance comes ahead of the launch of the band’s North American tour in Hollywood, FL on April 22.

“The Who Hits Back!” series will see Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend return to the stage alongside some of the finest orchestras in the U.S. and Canada, under the direction of conductor Keith Levenson.

The opening leg is an east coast spring trek with shows wrapping up in late May, while a fall trek will begin in Toronto, ON on October 2 and run through early November.

Over the summer, The Who will perform a 12-date UK tour.
