Fleetwood Mac keyboardist Christine McVie dead at 79

Fleetwood Mac keyboardist Christine McVie has died at the age of 79.

“On behalf of Christine McVie’s family, it is with a heavy heart we are informing you of Christine’s death,” shared her social media team. “She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th 2022, following a short illness. She was in the company of her family. We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time, and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally. RIP Christine McVie.”

“There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie,” said Fleetwood Mac in a statement. "She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure. She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed.”

No official details have been released about McVie’s cause of death; Rolling Stone reports in an interview with them this past June, the rocker acknowledged that she was in “quite bad health.” She said she was struggling with a “chronic back problem,” though didn’t offer any further information.

Fleetwood Mac formed in London in 1967; McVie released her self-titled debut album in 1970, just prior to joining the group. The keyboardist made her first appearance on record with the band on 1971’s “Future Games”, and was on board for all their releases – including 1977’s iconic “Rumours” set, where she wrote the hits “Don’t Stop” and “You Make Loving Fun” – through to 1995’s “Time” before leaving after their 1998 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and reunion tour.

Although she released her third solo album, “In The Meantime”, in 2004, McVie largely remained out of the public eye for many years; she regrouped with Fleetwood Mac in 2014 for a series of tours, recorded an album with longtime bandmate Lindsey Buckingham in 2017 and toured the project, and last played with the band in 2019.

Three songs from the December 13 show (also in Newark) will be available as bonus features on the DVD and Blu-ray: “Respectable” (with John Mayer), “Around And Around”, and “Gimme Shelter.”

Black Star Riders welcome new guitarist Sam Wood

Black Star Riders have welcomed new guitarist Sam Wood to their lineup.

The addition of Wood’s addition follows confirmation of the departure of Stone Sour / Corey Taylor guitarist Christian Martucci, who parted the band earlier this year.

Sam Wood, from Wayward Sons, joins the band and his first dates will be the UK shows this coming weekend in London (Earache Records' 35th Anniversary party) and Trecco Bay in South Wales for Planet Rockstock.

“I first saw Sam back in 2019 when Wayward Sons were guests to Black Star Riders and I was absolutely blown away!,” says Ricky Warwick. “I had Sam join me for some Fighting Hearts dates a few months back and knew he was the guy for us. If ever there was a new GUITAR HERO waiting in the wings, then it’s Sam! Black Star Riders have had some of the world’s finest guitar players in their ranks and Sam is truly up there as one of them. We couldn’t be happier!”

The line-up for the two aforementioned shows together with the 10th Anniversary UK tour in February 2023 will see Black Star Riders welcome back guitarist Scott Gorham and original drummer Jimmy DeGrasso for the celebrations.

“We are really looking forward to playing with Scott and Jimmy again and this is the only time you will get to see us all together again for this 10th anniversary of the band,” Warwick adds. “After February, Zak St. John will be with us for all future dates. The set list will be tracks from the new album ‘Wrong Side Of Paradise’ to start the show, then we welcome Scott on stage for the “greatest hits” set to celebrate our 10 years.”

Black Star Riders will release “Wrong Side Of Paradise” on January 20; to date, the group have shared the lead single, “Better Than Saturday Night”, “Pay Dirt” and their cover of the 1972 Osmonds hit, “Crazy Horses.”

Tom Petty streams video for live acoustic version of American Girl

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers are streaming a video for the live acoustic version of their 1976 classic, “American Girl”, from the newly-released album, “Live at the Fillmore 1997.”

The black and white video from co-directors Adria Petty and Jacques Naudé features audio of the performance as the soundtrack to the clip, which sees lead dancer and choreographer Maya Taylor with dancers Anna Iosipiv, Akane Little and Laura Aronoff as the camera moves through city streets, inside empty warehouses and atop buildings, exploring the lives of diverse characters.

“American Girl” was originally issued as the second single from the band’s self-titled debut album, which featured the US Top 40 hit, “Breakdown.”

“...it was the start of writing about people who are longing for something else in life, something better than they have," said Tom about the song.

“Live at the Fillmore 1997” captures Petty And The Heartbreakers during the last six nights of a 20-show residency at the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco, CA in the period following their 1996 soundtrack record, “Songs and Music from ‘She's The One’".

Motley Crue to debut new guitarist John 5 at new US dates with Def Leppard

Motley Crue will debut their new touring guitarist, John 5, at a pair of newly-announced shows with Def Leppard next February.

The February 10 and 11 dates at the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City, NJ will see the bands perform in the intimate 7,000 capacity venue a week before the classic rock acts launch the 2023 world stadium tour in Mexico City on February 18.

Presales for the Atlantic City shows are now underway with tickets going on sale to the general public on Friday, December 2.

Last month, Motley Crue announced that Mick Mars had confirmed his retirement from touring as he continues to deal with Ankylosing spondylitis – a type of arthritis that affects the spine and worsens over time – which the rocker has lived with since his late teens.

“I’m honored to carry on Mick’s legacy,” shared John 5 last month, “and am looking forward to playing these songs.”

John 5’s career includes extended stints with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, among others.

Neal Schon comments on Journey financial dispute with Jonathan Cain

Neal Schon has responded to comments made by Jonathan Cain in reaction to a financial dispute within the Journey organization.

Schon recently launched legal proceedings against his longtime bandmate in an effort to review financial records and access to an American Express credit card he claims Cain set up for his exclusive use under the band’s corporate entity Nomata.

The move led to Cain issuing a statement on the matter, claiming the lawsuit “has absolutely no merit” and that he will present “evidence to the court that shows that Neal has been under tremendous financial pressure as a result of his excessive spending and extravagant lifestyle, which led to him running up enormous personal charges on the band’s credit card account” despite alleged efforts “to limit his use of the card to legitimate band expenses.”

Schon took to social media to respond to recent headlines on the issue, saying: “All I want to see is our Records. Cain is lying as I DO NOT HAVE FULL ACCESS as he states. I’m now a 50% owner. I’m the founder President and Secretary / manager of Nomota LLC that we started in 1998 and have every right to see what’s gone on in there.

“AMEX ON A RECORDED LINE on both side told me JON WILL NOT give me access to the account of ALL CREDIT CARDS THAT HAVE BEEN USED. They told me I Only have Limited access.

“Really don’t understand why he would think I can’t see what’s gone on going all the way back to 1998,”
Schon added. “Hand over the records. It’s my legal right to see what our corporate BAND CARD FOR NOMOTA has been used for for the last over 2 decades. There’s been MANY EX Employees that had used this card. TRANSPARENCY is All I’m asking for. Is that to much to be asking of a 50/50 partner. There’s no skating around this.”

Journey issued their latest album, “Freedom”, in July, and will release “Live In Concert At Lollapalooza” on December 9.

Metallica announce M72 world tour

Metallica have announced dates for a 2023-2024 world tour in support of their newly-announced album, “72 Seasons.”

Due April 14, 2023, the band’s forthcoming record delivers 12 tracks totaling over 77 minutes; it is being previewed with the lead single, “Lux Aetna.”

Set to begin just weeks after the album’s release next spring, the “M72” series will see the band playing two nights in every city it visits — with each "No Repeat Weekend" featuring two completely different setlists and support lineups. The tour will feature a new in-the-round stage design that relocates the famed Metallica Snake Pit to center stage, as well as the "I Disappear" full-tour pass and the debut of discounted tickets for fans under 16 years of age.

"We told you about our new album ‘72 Seasons’, so what’s next now that we’ve escaped the studio? Hit the road, of course! You want a tour, we’ve got a tour... how about two full years worth of shows?!?!,” says Metallica. “Over the past few years, we have been so inspired by the dedication and family/community vibe of the fans who traveled to San Francisco for our recent weekend celebrations, first in 2019 with the two S&M2 shows, followed by last year’s 40th Anniversary shows. On top of that, we had a blast being a part of the 2021 Wimmer Festivals when we played two nights in one city, each with a totally different setlist. With all of that in mind, the M72 tour was born!

"Starting in April of 2023, we’ll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each “No Repeat Weekend” show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night! Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won’t see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all - we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we’ll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow Metallica fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.

"The M72 tour also launches a completely different look for us in stadiums – we’ll be in the round in the middle of the field. On top of that, the Snake Pit has been relocated to the center of the stage so that fans there will have a complete 360 view of the show. Each weekend offers a variety of Enhanced Experiences, ranging from access to a meet and greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the “Black Box” lounge to early entry into the venue and the aforementioned Snake Pit. The very popular “Black Laminate” is back, now known as the “I Disappear Ticket,” and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with us for multiple weekends. Grab one of these and attend every show on your continent or in the world!

"In keeping with the theme of two completely unique shows each weekend, we’re excited to share the stage with different bands each night, including some we have traveled with before and new friends who are joining us for the first time. Signing up for the entire adventure with us are Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, and MammothWVH, and some of you will see Pantera, Architects, Greta Van Fleet, or Volbeat, depending on the shows you attend. All the details are in the listing of dates below and on the individual show pages.

"Two-day discounted tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2, for all shows. Fan Club presales start early on Wednesday, November 30, with various other presales beginning later that day and throughout the week. If you cannot join us for the entire weekend, single-day tickets will be available starting January 20, 2023.

"A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band’s All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH’s efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million – providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

"We cannot wait to embark on this new adventure, play some new music, and spend our weekends in ’23 and ’24 with YOU!"

Metallica stream lead single from new album 72 Seasons

Metallica are streaming a video for "Lux AEterna", the lead single from the band’s newly-announced forthcoming album, "72 Seasons."

Due April 14, 2023, the project was produced by Greg Fidelman, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.

"Yes, you read that correctly,” says Metallica. “We have completed recording at HQ, and our 12th studio album is coming your way! It’s been six years since ‘Hardwired…To Self Destruct’, so we think it’s about time for some new music.”

“72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves,” explains Hetfield about the album title. “The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is re-enactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”

The group adds: "The album package was once again conceived and art directed by our good friend, acclaimed designer David Turner, and his team. David, who won a Grammy for his work on ‘Death Magnetic’, is the man behind the look and feel of all of our recent releases, including ‘Through The Never’, ‘S&M2’, and ‘Hardwired.’”

Bruce Springsteen performs soul classic for Thanksgiving on The Tonight Show

Bruce Springsteen performed the soul classic, “Don’t Play That Song”, on the Thanksgiving Day episode of NBC-TV’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

Written by Ahmet Ertegun and Betty Nelson – the wife of singer Ben E. King – the song was a hit on both the US R&B and pop charts for King in 1962, and for Aretha Franklin almost a decade later.

The New Jersey rocker’s version appears on his newly-released album, “Only The Strong Survive”, which sees him cover soul and R&B tracks from the catalogues of Motown, Gamble and Huff, Stax, and many more.

Produced by Ron Aniello and recorded at Thrill Hill Recording in New Jersey, Springsteen’s 21st studio album – which debuted at No. 8 on the US Billboard 200 – also features guest vocals by Sam Moore, as well as contributions from The E Street Horns, full string arrangements by Rob Mathes, and backing vocals by Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Michelle Moore, Curtis King Jr., Dennis Collins and Fonzi Thornton.

Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart among 2023 Songwriters Hall Of Fame nominees

Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are among the 2023 nominees under consideration for entry into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

The pair’s work throughout their career is being recognized in the Performing Songwriters’ category alongside fellow nominees Bryan Adams, Blondie, The Doobie Brothers, Jeff Lynne, REM, Patti Smith, Steve Winwood, Snoop Dogg, Gloria Estefan, Vince Gill and Sade.

Established in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame honors those whose work represents a spectrum of the most beloved songs from the world’s popular music songbook. A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first significant commercial release of a song.

As for Heart, the band’s Seattle, WA origins as The Army date back to 1967, it was after Ann joined in 1971 and a few name and lineup changes later – including the addition of Nancy – that led to Heart’s formation in 1974. By 1975 they had recorded their seminal debut album, “Dreamboat Annie”, which featured instant classics like “Magic Man”, “Crazy On You” and the title track. More US platinum albums followed, including 1997’s “Magazine” and “Little Queen”, which delivered “Barracuda”, “Kick It Out”, “Love Alive” and the title track, while “Straight On” led 1979’s “Dog & Butterfly” into the US Top 20.

1979’s “Bébé le Strange” reached US Gold before a pair of follow ups led a downward trend that was reversed with 1985’s self-titled record provided a series of hit singles and the group’s best-selling release, which delivered their only US No. 1 album and eventually sold more than 5 million copies in the region. A series of Grammy nominations followed into the early 1990s, with more studio releases up to an including their most recent effort, 2016’s “Beautiful Broken.”

Separately, Ann has lent her voice to classic motion picture themes and Nancy has built a successful career as a film composer. In recognition of their catalog of self-written material, they were awarded ASCAP’s prestigious Founders Award in 2009.

Jonathan Cain responds to Neal Schon lawsuit over Journey finances

Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain has issued a statement in response to a lawsuit brought against him by guitarist Neal Schon over the band’s finances.

Reports indicate Schon is seeking financial records and access to an American Express credit card he claims Cain set up for his exclusive use under the pair’s band corporation, Nomata.

“As a member and manager and founder and leader of Journey,” outlines Schon’s court filing, “Schon has the right to access and control Nomota’s books and records. Schon must have unfettered access to Nomota’s records so he can oversee and manage Nomota/Journey.”

Variety reports Cain has issued a statement on the matter on Tuesday, saying “This is a matter that should have been resolved privately, but I am forced to publicly respond now to Neal’s malicious lies and personal attacks on my family and (me) in an effort to garner public support for his ill-conceived lawsuit – a lawsuit that has absolutely no merit.

“Neal has always had access to the credit card statements; what he lacks – and what he is really seeking – is the ability to increase his spending limits. Since Neal decided to publicize what is going on, I can tell you we will present the evidence to the court that shows that Neal has been under tremendous financial pressure as a result of his excessive spending and extravagant lifestyle, which led to him running up enormous personal charges on the band’s credit card account.

“When efforts were made to limit his use of the card to legitimate band expenses, Neal unfortunately decided to attack me rather than trying to get his reckless spending under control,” Cain’s statement concludes. “I am saddened by the situation – for Neal and for our fans – but since Neal filed a lawsuit, I suspect he will not be able to ignore the court like he has ignored the countless financial advisors and accountants he has fired over the past several years who have tried in vain to help him.”

Read more on this developing story at Variety.com.

Schon was among the members who founded Journey in San Francisco, CA in 1973; Cain joined the lineup years later and co-wrote all of the songs on his first album with the band, 1981’s “Escape”, including the iconic hit, “Don’t Stop Believin’”.

Journey issued their latest album, “Freedom”, in July, and will release “Live In Concert At Lollapalooza” on December 9.

Thin Lizzy announce expanded Live And Dangerous reissue

Thin Lizzy will issue an expanded 45th anniversary edition of their legendary 1978 release, “Live And Dangerous”, on January 20.

Recorded in London and Toronto in 1977 during the “Johnny the Fox” and “Bad Reputation” tours, the original package spent the best part of three months in the UK Top 10, where it reached No. 2 and remained on the charts for more than a year.

The 2023 package will be released as a definitive 8-CD Super Deluxe Edition featuring a newly-remastered version of the original album alongside all of the gigs recorded for “Live And Dangerous”; these six shows from London, Toronto and Philadelphia have been newly-mixed by Ben Findlay from the original multi-tracks and mastered by Andy Pearce, overseen by legendary Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham.

The inclusion of the original concert recordings in the box set goes to dispel the rumors that the album was extensively overdubbed in the studio; rather, it displays the rawness of the Irish rock band at the top of their game night after night.

Thin Lizzy will also release a remastered version of their 1983 package, “Life Live”, on January 20.

The group’s final album was recorded during their farewell tour in 1983, principally at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.

Phil Lynott had felt it was time to disband the group after the 1983 tour and to mark the occasion, former Thin Lizzy guitarists Eric Bell, Brian Robertson and Gary Moore joined the band on stage at the end of these gigs to do some numbers.

During the performance of “The Rocker”, all of the guitarists played at the same time (Moore, John Sykes, Scott Gorham, Robertson and Bell), making a total of eight members on stage performing at once.

Neal Schon sues Jonathan Cain over Journey financial dispute

Journey guitarist Neal Schon is suing Jonathan Cain over a financial dispute surrounding issues relating to the keyboardist's allegedly secret and exclusive use of a credit card under the band’s corporate company.

According to a report by Page Six, Schon and Cain set up 50/50 ownership of a limited-liability company called Nomota in 1998 to handle the band's business.

Schon claims in court papers that Cain set up an American Express card without telling the band’s founder, and Cain hasn’t turned over financial records that allow the guitarist to know how much the band owes him.

“As a member and manager and founder and leader of Journey,” the papers say, “Schon has the right to access and control Nomota’s books and records. Schon must have unfettered access to Nomota’s records so he can oversee and manage Nomota/Journey.”

“Schon’s right to Journey’s profits is being controlled by Cain – Schon’s bandmate, who Schon brought into the band in the 1980s – and despite all of his requests and efforts, Schon has been unable to get full access.”

The suit continues, “Among other things, the American Express account of Nomota has been set up such that only Cain has control of the account and access to its records. On information and belief, millions in Journey funds have flowed through this AMEX account.”

The dispute is the latest in a series of legal issues surrounding the California band in recent years; in September, former Journey singer Steve Perry filed a petition at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in an effort to prevent Schon and Cain from owning merchandise trademarks on the names of many of the band’s biggest hits, claiming the pair are not allowed to unilaterally register trademarks for the song names because the trio signed a partnership agreement requiring unanimous consent for any use of the tracks, for merchandise or anything else.

In 2020, band members Steve Smith and Ross Valory were fired over an alleged effort to take control over the band’s name in what has been referred to as “an attempted corporate coup d'état.”

Journey issued their latest album, “Freedom”, in July, and will release “Live In Concert At Lollapalooza” on December 9.

The Doors premiere video for unreleased song Paris Blues

The Doors are premiering a video for “Paris Blues”, the last known unreleased song from the band’s vault.

An original blues song written by the band, the track was recorded during one of the group’s recording sessions for either 1969’s “The Soft Parade” or 1971’s “L.A. Woman” (no one seems to remember).

The master tape of the song was lost, and the only surviving copy was given to Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek. Sadly, this copy was partially damaged by his son Pablo (a toddler at the time), who recorded over a few short parts. Now, through some creative editing, the song has been rescued from obscurity to take its place as the title track to a new blues-themed compilation of the same name coming out on vinyl for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event on November 25.

The “Paris Blues” compilation features two previously-unreleased live recordings of singer Jim Morrison and guitarist Robby Krieger performing as a duo at a benefit for Norman Mailer’s mayoral campaign on May 31, 1969, in West Hollywood. The first song is “I Will Never Be Untrue,” a band original written for, but left off of, 1970’s “Morrison Hotel”; the other is a cover of Robert Johnson’s “Me And The Devil Blues.” Both songs were recorded by Frank Lisciandro, a filmmaker who befriended Manzarek and Morrison when all three attended the film program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

“Paris Blues” also contains a pair of outtakes recorded during the band’s sessions for "The Soft Parade"“(You Need Meat) Don’t Go No Further” and “I’m Your Doctor.” Both feature Manzarek on vocals backed by Krieger and drummer John Densmore. In 2019, bass by Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots was added to the songs, which were included on Rhino’s 50th-anniversary edition of the album.

Also featured are three songs from “Live in Vancouver 1970”, a concert album released in 2010 by The Doors Bright Midnight Archive label. Recorded during the band’s 1970 tour, these live tracks spotlight legendary bluesman Albert King, who joined the band onstage during its June 6, 1970, show at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver. Morrison’s introduction of King is included along with live versions of “Little Red Rooster,” “Rock Me Baby,” and “Who Do You Love?”

“Paris Blues” will be available as a limited edition of 10,000 numbered copies on translucent blue vinyl at select independent music stores on November 25.

The LP’s cover art is an original painting by Krieger, and the set also includes liner notes by blues scholar Mary Katherine Aldin.

Get your digital copy of “Paris Blues” here and “The Very Best of The Doors” here.
