VIDEO: The Eagles debut new lineup at Classic West festival

The Eagles performed their first concert following the 2016 passing of co-founder Glenn Frey with a headline set on the opening night of The Classic West Festival at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on July 15, and video from the show is streaming online.

Frey’s son, Deacon, and country singer Vince Gill joined the group’s lineup as they delivered a 23-song set of classics while paying tribute to their late bandmate, who died on January 18, 2016 at the age of 67 from a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia in a New York hospital.

On a bill that included appearances by The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, and following The Eagles’ opening track – a cover of Steve Young’s “Seven Bridges Road” – Forbes reports guitarist Joe Walsh said, “This one’s for you, Glenn. You’re in our hearts tonight and the music goes on,” before Deacon stepped up to handle lead vocals on his father’s signature song and the group’s 1972 debut single, “Take It Easy.”

“This is unbelievable,” said the 24-year-old Frey when introducing “Peaceful Easy Feeling” mid-set in front of 50,000 plus fans. “The last few years have been rough. The only remedy for that is love and I’m feeling it from you tonight. This is my medicine.”

“Anyone out there miss my dad?” Frey asked during the song, as the crowd responded with a resounding and heartfelt yes.

Gill took center stage for four tunes, including “Take It To The Limit”, “Tequila Sunrise”, “Lyin’ Eyes” and “New Kid In Town.”

Bob Seger made a guest appearance on the 1979 hit “Heartache Tonight” late in the show as guitarist Joe Walsh rocked solo hits “In The City”, “Life’s Been Good” and “Rocky Mountain Way”, and “Funk 49” by his former group, The James Gang.

With Frey clearly on the minds of everyone at Dodger Stadium, Henley addressed the fact that this might be the band’s last hometown show.

“In case this is our last dance, we want to thank all the fans in Southern California,” he said. “It all started here in Los Angeles.”

Night two of Classic West – on July 16 – features Fleetwood Mac alongside guests Journey and Earth, Wind & Fire, before the weekend package moves east to New York’s Citi Field to do it all over again on July 29 and 30.

The Eagles reveal replacement for the late Glenn Frey

Eagles co-founder Don Henley has revealed that Deacon Frey, the son of the late Glenn Frey, will join the band for its summer 2017 appearances at The Classic West festival at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and The Classic East event at Citi Field in New York.

“There’s going to be an official announcement in a few days but let’s just do it here,” Henley told Mike Rhyner of Dallas, TX sports station The Ticket during a May 15 interview. “Glenn’s son Deacon is a very talented young man, and he seems to be up for the task. He’s enthusiastic about it and he’s been working real hard on it, and he’s gonna do it with us. I think that’s appropriate.

“I never planned on it coming out this way but it’s my responsibility to carry on this legacy and to keep these songs alive,” he continued. “Apparently people still want to hear them. I thought we were done when Glenn passed away and I said as much, but I was in a state of shock at the time. But we have gotten a lot of messages from people all over the world from people who would like to see things continue.”

Glenn Frey died on January 18, 2016 at the age of 67 from a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia following surgery at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.

Henley sees Deacon carrying on his father’s legacy as a natural fit for the group.

“There’s an old system both in Eastern and Western culture called the guild system where the father is the master and the son is the apprentice,” he explained. “The trade, the craft, the business is handed down from father to son. I think it’s the only appropriate way to carry on. I don’t think I’d do it otherwise. Since it’s Glenn’s blood, it’s his son, I think that’s appropriate.

“There’ll be one more musician along for the ride too, but I’m not gonna say who that is.”

The Eagles will headline the July 15 show at Dodger Stadium alongside Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers, with Fleetwood Mac topping the July 16 event with Journey and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The same lineups will play in the same order in New York on July 29 and 30.

The Eagles sue Hotel California

The Eagles are suing the Hotel California in Baja, Mexico for trademark infringement in relation to their 1976 signature song of the same name.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit claims the business has gone out of its way to imply association with the legendary band.

"Through advertising targeted to U.S. consumers, and in-person communications,” writes attorney Laura Wytsma, “Defendants lead U.S. consumers to believe that the Todos Santos Hotel is associated with the Eagles and, among other things, served as the inspiration for the lyrics in 'Hotel California,' which is false.

"Hotel California" isn't just a hit song or the title of the Eagles' most successful album, it's the "essence of the band itself."

The small hotel originally opened under the name Hotel California in 1950 but went through subsequent ownership and name changes. When Debbie and John Stewart bought the hotel in 2001, the complaint states, they sought to revitalize it by creating a reputation "based at least partially on the hotel's reputed, but false, connection to the Eagles."

Wytsma says the hotel also plays Eagles' music and sells T-shirts that refer to the hotel as "legendary," which leave consumers with the impression that "they have visited 'the' Hotel California made famous by the Eagles."

The Eagles are seeking an injunction to ban the hotel from using the name Hotel California or doing anything else to imply it is connected to or approved by the band, and are asking for all related profits plus actual and exemplary damages.

The title track to the group’s fifth record, “Hotel California” peaked at No. 19 on the US Billboard Hot 100 while the album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on its way to US sales of 16 million copies and more than 32 million worldwide.

The Eagles are teaming up with Fleetwood Mac to headline a pair of festivals this summer.

The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac to headline Classic East and West festivals

The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac will headline a pair of US festivals this summer.

Organized by manager Irving Azoff and reportedly inspired by the success of the Desert Trip events last year, the bands will perform at The Classic West festival at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and The Classic East at Citi Field in New York.

The Eagles will headline the July 15 show at Dodger Stadium alongside Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers, and Fleetwood Mac will top the July 16 event with Journey and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The same lineups will play in the same order in New York on July 29 and 30.

An American Express presale runs April 3 at 10a through April 6 at 10p, with general public tickets going on sale in each city on April 7 at 10a local time.

The festival news is of special interest to Eagles fans: following the 2016 death of guitarist Glenn Frey, the group performed a tribute to their fallen bandmate at the Grammy Awards with drummer Don Henley telling the BBC last March that it was their farewell performance.

There’s no official word yet as to a replacement for Frey, but longtime associate Jackson Browne joined the Eagles lineup for the Grammys tribute.

In between the festivals, Henley will perform a 70th birthday concert in Dallas, TX on July 22.

On March 31, Fleetwood Mac will release an expanded reissue of their 1987 album, “Tango In The Night.”

Don Henley announces 70th birthday concert and extends 2017 tour

Don Henley has announced plans for a 70th birthday concert and the addition of new dates to his 2017 North American tour.

A founding member of The Eagles, Henley will play special concert in his native Texas to celebrate his 70th birthday.

The July 22 show at the American Airlines Center in Dallas will see the rocker joined by several special guests throughout the night.

Following a trek in January, Henley will extend his 2017 North American tour with a second two-week stint of seven shows starting June 6 in Boston, MA with openers JD & The Straight Shot.

Bob Seger issues free song tribute to Glenn Frey of The Eagles

Bob Seger has posted “Glenn Song” as a free download and tribute to the late Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey on the first anniversary of his passing.

Frey died on January 18, 2016 at the age of 67 from a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia following surgery at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.

According to Rolling Stone, Seger recorded the tribute four months ago at Nashville's Ocean Way studios.

"It's obviously not meant to be a hit," says Seger. "There's no chorus per se or title section or anything. The idea was just to honor his memory and talk, very specifically, about my impression of him in 1966 when we first met."

Seger and Frey grew up in Detroit and were part of the same local rock scene of the mid-1960s.

Seger sang "Heartache Tonight" (a song he co-wrote for The Eagles in 1979) at Frey’s memorial ceremony, a performance he revived at the Kennedy Center Honors last month.

"I hope 'Glenn Song' doesn't make his wife Cindy cry," says Seger. "But it probably will."

Following Frey’s passing the surviving members of The Eagles delivered a tribute to him at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last February, where they were joined by co-writer Jackson Browne to perform “Take It Easy.”

The event was a billed as one-time only special tribute to Frey, with Don Henley telling the BBC in March that it was the group’s farewell performance.

The Eagles were recently named the No. 8 Rock News Artist Of The Year as part of the 2016 hennemusic Rock News Awards, where they also delivered the No. 10 Rock News Story of The Year.

Bob Seger, Vince Gill, Juanes and the Kings Of Leon performed Eagles classics at the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC earlier this month, and video from the tribute to the band is now available.

Following an introduction by Ringo Starr, Kings Of Leon played the California band’s 1972 single, "Take It Easy", with Colombian musician Juanes joined by guitarists Steve Vai and Steuart Smith for the classic, “Hotel California.”

Vince Gill delivered "Peaceful Easy Feeling" before co-writer Bob Seger rocked through the Eagles' 1979 single "Heartache Tonight" and the finale of “Life In The Fast Lane”, which saw the return of all the players to stage – including the evening’s host Stephen Colbert.

Joe Walsh, Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit were on hand for the December 4 event, smiling and cheering enthusiastically throughout the tribute, which was originally set for last year but postponed following news that guitarist and founding member Glenn Frey was to undergo major surgery to address a recurrence of previous intestinal issues, which would require a lengthy recovery period.

The Eagles wrapped up a three-year tour in support of the 2013 documentary, “History Of The Eagles”, in 2015.

The band were scheduled to receive the Kennedy Centre Honors in November, but their appearance was postponed following news that guitarist and founding member Glenn Frey was to undergo major surgery to address a recurrence of previous intestinal issues, which would require a lengthy recovery period.

Following surgery, Frey was placed in a medically-induced coma at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, where he passed away on January 18, 2016 at the age of 67 from a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia.

Eagles manager Irving Azoff blamed Frey’s death, in part, on the medications he’d been taking for his arthritis since 2000.

The group delivered a tribute to Frey at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 15, where they were joined by co-writer Jackson Browne to perform their first hit, 1972’s “Take It Easy.”

The event was a billed as one-time only special tribute to Frey, with Don Henley telling the BBC in March that it was the group’s farewell performance.

More sad news in the Eagles camp followed in March when Lana Meisner, the wife of band co-founder Randy Meisner, was fatally shot at the couple’s North Hollywood home when a rifle she was handling discharged accidentally.

The distraught bassist made further headlines when he was placed under a 72-hour hold in a psych ward for threatening suicide after the incident.

Meanhwhile, guitarist Joe Walsh teamed up with Bad Company for a summer US tour, with Henley hit the road for shows in Europe and North America that ran into early fall.

The surviving members of The Eagles – Walsh, Henley and Timothy B. Schmit – regrouped earlier this month for an appearance at the 2016 Kennedy Centre Honors. Bob Seger, Vince Gill, Juanes and Kings Of Leon performed Eagles classics at the event, which will be broadcast December 27 at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.

VIDEO: Joe Walsh performs Rocky Mountain Way on Conan

Joe Walsh performed his 1973 classic, “Rocky Mountain Way”, with The Basic Cable Band on TBS’ late night show Conan on September 26.

“I was mowing the lawn in Boulder, CO,” said Walsh of the lyrical inspiration for the tune, written after his departure from The James Gang. “I looked up and saw the mountains and the back range and I thought ‘this is better than the way I had.’

“And I got the words; I mean all at once. I ran in the house to write the words down, but the lawnmower kept going … over into the neighbour lady’s garden. It was an expensive song to write.”

The performance followed an extensive interview that saw the Eagles guitarist share a story of trashing a penthouse hotel room with actor John Belushi back in the70s, a feat that cost him $23,000.

“My job,” said Walsh, “was to get across the state line before the maid saw the room.”

The guitarist was on hand to promote his involvement in writing a song for the new film “Citizen Soldier”, which documents a group of soldiers in the Oklahoma Army National Guard’s 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team – known since World War II as the “Thunderbirds” – and their life-changing tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Walsh recently wrapped up his latest solo tour of North America.

AUDIO: Nickelback cover Don Henley classic Dirty Laundry

Nickelback are streaming a cover of Don Henley’s 1982 classic, “Dirty Laundry.”

The Canadian rockers recently recorded the tune during sessions for the follow-up to 2014's “No Fixed Address.”

“Sometimes you play a song in the studio just for fun,” says the band. “And sometimes it’s so fun you have to record and share it with everyone.”

“Dirty Laundry” was the second single from Henley’s solo debut, “I Can’t Stand Still.” The song reached No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Nickelback are returning to live action when they launch a European tour in Helsinki, Finland on September 2.

The 2-month trek will mark the first extended series of concerts since the group was forced to cancel 2015 tours when singer Chad Kroeger underwent surgery to remove a cyst on his voice box that required an extended period of vocal rest as ordered by doctors.

Nickelback are suing Lloyd’s Of London for $13 million after the company refused to pay insurance on the cancelled tours by claiming that Kroeger’s condition was pre-existing and, as a result, not covered by their policy.

Don Henley extends Cass County tour with new summer dates

Don Henley has extended his tour in support of 2015’s “Cass County” with the addition of a new series of European and North American summer dates.

Henley will begin the run with a June 20 show in Stockholm, Sweden as part of a 2-week European trek that culminates in a July 3 concert in London’s Hyde Park.

North American dates will start July 13 in Penticton, British Columbia and run to the end of September.

American Express Card Members can purchase advance tickets for many of the concerts beginning Tuesday, April 5 at 10 AM. local time.

General public tickets will go on sale Friday, April 8 at 10AM local time.

Henley’s fifth solo album, “Cass County” sees him joined by guests including Mick Jagger, Dolly Parton, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride and Miranda Lambert.

The project scored Henley the highest US charting solo album in his career when it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with opening week sales of 89,000 copies.

The set also landed No. 1 slots on both the Top Album Sales chart and the Top Country Albums chart.

Don Henley confirms the end of The Eagles

Don Henley says the The Eagles' emotional tribute to Glenn Frey at the Grammy Awards last month marks the band’s farewell performance.

The group were joined by Jackson Browne at the event to perform their first hit, 1972’s “Take It Easy.”

The performance was a billed as one-time only special tribute to Frey, who passed away January 18 at the age of 67 from a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia.

“It’s been a great loss for a lot of us, and we’re still trying to cope with it,” Henley tells BBC Radio 2.

As for the Grammys appearance, "It was very difficult and very emotional,” he explains. “We actually almost didn't do it, but the Grammy people were very insistent so we decided that we would do it.

“Jackson was the appropriate person to sing the song because, as most people know, Jackson started the song; he was the first one to start writing the song and Glenn helped him finish it many, many years ago – back in the early 70s. So he was the perfect person to come and sing the song in tribute and I thought it went pretty well. We were very emotional but we did it.”

The drummer says the Frey tribute has brought an end to The Eagles, 45 years after they formed in Los Angeles.

“I think that was the final farewell,” says Henley. “I don’t think you’ll see us performing again. I think that was probably it."

The Eagles are one of the world's best-selling bands of all time with more than 150 million records sold.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, the first year they were nominated.

Eagles and Jackson Browne perform Glenn Frey tribute at Grammy Awards

The Eagles were joined by Jackson Browne to perform a tribute to the late Glenn Frey at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Monday.

Browne appeared alongside Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit during the 58th annual event for the group’s lead single and first hit, “Take It Easy.”

The 1972 classic was co-written by Browne and Frey, with the Eagles guitarist taking lead vocals on the opening track from the band’s self-titled debut album.

The performance was a billed as one-time only special tribute to Frey, who passed away January 18 at the age of 67 from a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia.

As a member of the Eagles, Frey won six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards.

The Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, the first year they were nominated.

Eagles to perform Glenn Frey tribute at Grammy Awards

The Eagles will be joined by Jackson Browne to perform a tribute to the late Glenn Frey at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles this weekend.

Eagles co-founders Don Henley and Bernie Leadon will team with Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit for the one-time-only special tribute to Frey, who passed away January 18 at the age of 67 from a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia.

"Glenn Frey's untimely passing was a huge loss for the entire creative community," says President/CEO of The Recording Academy Neil Portnow. "For more than 45 years, the Eagles have played a significant role in shaping our musical landscape. We are honored to welcome the band, along with Jackson Browne, to the Grammy stage in tribute to Glenn's tremendous legacy."

Frey sang lead vocals on Eagles classics like "Take It Easy", "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "Tequila Sunrise", "Already Gone", "Lyin' Eyes", "New Kid in Town", and "Heartache Tonight."

The Eagles postponed plans to attend the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors last December as Frey underwent major surgery for the health issue.

Drummer Henley and songwriting partner Stan Lynch are nominated for a Grammy in the Best American Roots Song category for his “Cass Country” track “The Cost Of Living.”

The song will compete for top spot against tunes by The Mavericks, Punch Brothers, Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, and Jason Isbell.

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA on February 15 and broadcast on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. ET.

Eagles manager partially blames meds for Glenn Frey death

Eagles manager Irving Azoff says the death of guitarist Glenn Frey on January 18 can be blamed in part on the medications he was taking.

The band announced Frey’s passing at the age of 67 was based on a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia.

Now, Azoff tells The Wrap that the latter two were caused by medications that he was taking for the inflammatory disorder.

“The colitis and pneumonia were side effects from all the meds,” explained Azoff. “He died from complications of ulcer and colitis after being treated with drugs for his rheumatoid arthritis which he had for over 15 years.”

The manager declined to specify the drug in question, telling The Wrap that he had been counseled by an attorney not to do so.

Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner formed The Eagles in Los Angeles in 1971. With few lineup changes, the group went on to become one of the world's best-selling bands of all time with more than 150 million records sold.

"I can't believe he's gone," Azoff told Billboard. "He and Don Henley and Dan Fogelberg and I all started together. In addition to being an incredible musician, he had a great sense for the business, and a lot of that rubbed off on me.

"I can’t believe everything we accomplished,” he added. “It was a staggering body of work and just an amazing run. I don’t think there will ever be another American band that's as successful."

Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey dead at 67

Eagles guitarist and founding member Glenn Frey has died at the age of 67.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our comrade, Eagles founder, Glenn Frey, in New York City on Monday, January 18th, 2016,” said the band in a statement. “Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia.

“The Frey family would like to thank everyone who joined Glenn to fight this fight and hoped and prayed for his recovery.

“Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.”

The Eagles postponed plans to attend the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors last month as Frey underwent major surgery for the health issue.

"He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction,” said Eagles drummer and vocalist Don Henley. “But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved. We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the same dream: to make our mark in the music industry -- and with perseverance, a deep love of music, our alliance with other great musicians and our manager, Irving Azoff, we built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed.

“But, Glenn was the one who started it all. He was the spark plug, the man with the plan. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn't quit. He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven. He loved his wife and kids more than anything.

“We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow. We brought our two-year 'History of the Eagles Tour' to a triumphant close at the end of July and now he is gone.

“I'm not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life.

“Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some."

The Eagles were formed in Los Angeles in 1971 by Frey, Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner.

With few lineup changes, the group went on to become one of the world's best-selling bands of all time with more than 150 million records sold and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1998.

Frey sang lead vocals on Eagles classics like "Take It Easy", "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "Tequila Sunrise", "Already Gone", "Lyin' Eyes", "New Kid in Town" and "Heartache Tonight."

The guitarist also scored a pair of solo hits in the 1980s, including “The Heat Is On” from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack and “You Belong To The City” from TV’s Miami Vice.

Frey issued five solo albums during his career; his last record was 2012’s “After Hours.”

Don Henley gets Grammy nod for Cass Country track

Don Henley has received a Grammy Awards nomination in the Best American Roots Song category for his “Cass Country” track “The Cost Of Living.”

The duet with country legend Merle Haggard is honored with a nod to the songwriting team of Henley and Stan Lynch.

“The Cost Of Living” will compete for top spot against tunes by The Mavericks, Punch Brothers, Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, and Jason Isbell.

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA on February 15 and broadcast on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. ET.

The Eagles drummer’s fifth solo album sees Henley joined by guests including Mick Jagger, Dolly Parton, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride and Miranda Lambert.

“Cass County” scored Henley the highest US charting solo album in his career when it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with opening week sales of 89,000 copies.

The set also hit the No. 1 slot on both the Top Album Sales and the Top Country Albums charts.

The Eagles: Glenn Frey surgery postpones Kennedy Center Honors appearance

The Eagles have postponed plans to attend the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors next month as Glenn Frey is facing major surgery that will sideline him for an extended period of time.

Billboard reports the band confirmed that Frey "has had a recurrence of previous intestinal issues, which will require major surgery and a lengthy recovery period."

“We send our best wishes to Glenn for a swift and full recovery,” says Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter. “It felt only right to defer bestowing this extraordinary honor to the group when Glenn could also be in attendance.”

The 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors event will proceed in Washington, DC in December as planned, with honorees singer-songwriter Carole King, filmmaker George Lucas, actress and singer Rita Moreno, conductor Seiji Ozawa and actress and Broadway star Cicely Tyson.

The Honors recipients are recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts – whether in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures or television – and are selected by the Center’s Board of Trustees.

The President and Mrs. Obama will receive the Honorees, members of the Artists Committee who nominate them, and the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees at the White House prior to a gala performance taping on December 6.

The Honors Gala will be recorded for broadcast on the CBS Network on Tuesday, December 29 at 9:00 p.m.
