Jeff Lynne cancels final ELO farewell shows due to illness

Jeff Lynne cancelled the final pair of Electric Light Orchestra's farewell shows due to illness.

Lynne was scheduled to perform the second of two concerts in Manchester on July 10 – as well as the last show on the band's Over and Out farewell tour on July 13 at London’s Hyde Park – but advised fans that the group’s final appearance would not proceed as planned.

"Jeff Lynne is heartbroken to report that he will not be able to perform at tomorrow’s BST Hyde Park show," shared Lynne on social media on July 12. "Jeff has been battling a systemic infection and is currently in the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time nor will he be able to reschedule.

"The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff’s mind today – and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time."

Lynne – who launched the farewell series last fall with a run of North American dates – was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

Known for their distinct style that seamlessly and innovatively blends rock, pop and classical, ELO has had more than 20 Top 40 Hits across the US and the UK, making Lynne’s sweeping productions some of the most recognizable music of the last forty years and helping sell over 50 million records worldwide.

Widely agreed upon as one of the greatest record producers in music history, Lynne was a co-founder and member of The Travelling Wilburys together with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, as well as a producer and collaborator with some of the biggest names in music including The Beatles, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Bryan Adams.

Vintage ELO song soundtracks Michelob Ultra Super Bowl LVI commercial

A vintage 1973 song from the Electric Light Orchestra provided the soundtrack to a Super Bowl LVI commercial for Michelob Ultra over the weekend.

“Showdown” – the lead single from the UK band’s “On The Third Day” album – could be heard throughout the ad, which featured actor Steve Buscemi, former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, golf star Brooks Koepka, Jimmy Butler of the NBA’s Miami Heat, former WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumike, US soccer great Alex Morgan and tennis legend Serena Williams.

“On The Third Day” was the last ELO album not to receive a Gold or Platinum certification; the group went on a streak of classics and hits starting with 1974’s “Eldorado” on their way to worldwide sales of more than 50 million records.

The Electric Light Orchestra were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017; now billed as Jeff Lynne’s ELO, the outfit’s most recent studio album is 2019’s “From Out Of Nowhere”, which earned the band their first UK No. 1 studio album in almost 40 years.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO scores first UK No. 1 studio album in almost 40 years

Jeff Lynne’s ELO has scored their first UK No. 1 studio album in almost 40 years with “From Out Of Nowhere.”

According to The Official Charts Company, the project enters atop the UK charts to deliver the band their first No. 1 studio recording since 1981’s “Time.”

ELO were last at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart in 2016 with their greatest hits collection, “All Over The World: The Very Best Of”, which hit a million sales after ELO’s performance in the Glastonbury legends’ slot.

The follow-up to 2015’s “Alone In The Universe” sees Lynne performing all of the instruments and vocals on the record, save for some percussion by engineer Steve Jay.

“‘From Out of Nowhere' — that’s exactly where it came from,” says Lynne. “That’s the first one I wrote for this album and it’s kind of like that.”

Jeff Lynne’s ELO are streaming a video for “Time Of Our Life”, the new single from their forthcoming album, “From Out Of Nowhere”, ahead of its release on November 1.

The track “is a celebration song about the day we played at Wembley Stadium (in June of 2017), which was sold out and beautiful, the crowd was fantastic,” explains Lynne in a new video. “This is a song just reflecting that day; it’s real upbeat … and you do get the feel of just how much fun it was.”

The concert appearance before 60,000 fans in London resulted in the live package, “Wembley Or Bust.”

“From Out Of Nowhere” marks the follow-up to Lynne’s 2015 album, “Alone In The Universe.”

“Time Of Our Life” follows the set’s title track as the second song issued ahead of the project, which sees Lynne performing all of the instruments and vocals on the record, save for some percussion by engineer Steve Jay.

Electric Light Orchestra to release 1970s UK singles collection

The Electric Light Orchestra will release a new collection, “The U.K. Singles Volume One: 1972-1978”, on September 21.

The collector’s box set – which presents ELO's early output of hits and b-sides as originally experienced by the band's fans in their native UK – features 15 groundbreaking 45 RPM singles plus 1978's "The ELO EP", each fully recreated from their original releases more than four decades ago.

All songs have been remastered from the analog source tapes while each of the 16 7" vinyl discs in the collection features detailed reproductions of the original sleeves and labels from the 1970s.

Nine of these singles – including "Roll Over Beethoven," "Evil Woman," "Livin' Thing," "Telephone Line" and "Mr. Blue Sky" – reached the Top 10 of the British charts and remain among the world's most enduring classic rock songs.

Formed in Birmingham, UK in 1970 by Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood and drummer Bev Bevan, ELO was designed to create progressive modern pop music combining classical and rock elements wrapped in futurist iconography.

As ELO’s leader, Lynne wrote virtually all of the group's original material while arranging and producing their albums; the brand owner and multi-instrumentalist has been touring in recent years under the banner Jeff Lynne’s ELO.

Last fall, Lynne released the live album and concert film package, “Wembley Or Bust.”

Directed by Paul Dugdale, the set captured Lynne’s June 2017 sold-out show before 60,000 fans at London’s Wembley Stadium, where he delivered material from the group’s extensive hit-filled discography alongside tracks by The Move and The Traveling Wilburys.

“Wembley Or Bust” will make its US television premiere on Showtime on Friday, July 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on-air, on demand and over the internet.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO adds dates to North American tour

Jeff Lynne’s ELO have added second shows in Los Angeles and New York “due to strong ticket demand” as part of their 2018 summer tour of North America.

The band will follow their August 4 concert at The Forum in Los Angeles with an appearance on August 5, and will now play New York’s Madison Square Garden on August 22 after their originally-announced August 21 date.

A Facebook presale is now underway, with tickets for the second Los Angeles show going on sale Friday, December 8, at 10:00am PST, and available for the second New York date on Saturday, December 9, at 10:00am EST.

The run comes on the heels of the Electric Light Orchestra’s induction into the 2017 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this past April and a series of sold-out 2017 European shows in support of 2015’s “Alone In The Universe”, which resulted in the recently-released live package, “Wembley Or Bust.”

Directed by Paul Dugdale, the project captures Lynne’s sold-out show before 60,000 fans at London’s Wembley Stadium this past June, where he delivered material from the group’s extensive hit-filled discography; the show also includes tracks by The Move and The Traveling Wilburys.

Lynne is looking forward to returning to stages across North America next year.

“Our audiences are amazing,” he says. “It’s like they’re in the group. We can’t wait to play for them again.”

Jeff Lynne’s ELO announce first North American tour in over 35 years

Jeff Lynne’s ELO will tour North America next summer, marking the band’s first trek on the continent in over 35 years.

The 3-week, 10 city tour will begin in Oakland, CA on August 2 and wrap up in Philadelphia, PA on August 24.

The run comes on the heels of the Electric Light Orchestra’s induction into the 2017 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this past April and a series of sold-out 2017 European shows in support of 2015’s “Alone In The Universe”, which will deliver a new live package, “Wembley Or Bust”, on November 17.

Directed by Paul Dugdale, the release captures Lynne’s sold-out show before 60,000 fans at London’s Wembley Stadium this past June, where he delivered material from the group’s extensive hit-filled discography; the show also includes tracks by The Move and The Traveling Wilburys.

Lynne is looking forward to returning to stages across North America next year.

“Our audiences are amazing,” he says. “It’s like they’re in the group. We can’t wait to play for them again.”

An American Express Card Members presale runs November 15 at 10am local time through November 16 at 10pm local time, while a Live Nation presale begins November 16.

General public seats will go on sale November 17 at 10am local time.

All pre-orders of "Wembley Or Bust" made at Jeff Lynne’s ELO Official US Store prior to 4:00pm EST on November 14, 2017 are eligible to receive a ticket pre-sale code for 2018 U.S. tour dates. Codes can be used during the pre-sale window for access to tickets before the general public on-sale. One (1) code is granted per customer and allows access to purchase up to four (4) tickets. Tickets will be available while supplies last and pre-sale codes do not guarantee inventory.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO are streaming audio of their 1980 hit, “Xanadu”, ahead of the November 17 release of the live album and concert film package, “Wembley Or Bust.”

The song was the title tune to the band’s soundtrack for the film of the same name starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. While the movie flopped at the box office, the soundtrack topped the charts in several countries, with the title track going on to become the Electric Light Orchestra’s only UK No. 1 single.

Multi-instrumentalist Lynne has been touring in recent years under the banner Jeff Lynne’s ELO.

“Wembley Or Bust” captures Lynne’s sold-out show before 60,000 fans at London’s Wembley Stadium this past June, where he delivered material from the group’s extensive hit-filled discography; the show also includes tracks by The Move and The Traveling Wilburys.

“Xanadu” follows “Turn To Stone” as the latest preview of the project directed by Paul Dugdale.

“Wembley Or Bust” will be available in multiple formats, including 2CD/Blu Ray, 2 CD/DVD, 2CD and 3LP packages.
