Whitesnake leader David Coverdale has announced his retirement.
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, brothers and sisters of the ‘Snake, a special announcement for you," shared Coverdale in a new video message. "After 50 years-plus of an incredible journey with you, with Deep Purple, with Whitesnake, Jimmy Page, the last few years has been very evident to me that it’s time really for me to hang up my rock and roll platform shoes and my skintight jeans. And as you can see, we’ve taken care of the lion’s wig. But it’s time for me to call it a day.
“I love you dearly. I thank everyone who’s assisted and supported me on this incredible journey – all the musicians, the crew, the fans, the family. It’s amazing, but it really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement. And I hope you can appreciate that.
“Once again, I love you with all my heart. Fare thee well.”

Deep Purple has released the first-ever official video for its iconic 1972 track, “Smoke On The Water”, ahead of the March 29 release of an expanded Super Deluxe Edition of “Machine Head.”
Conceived by UK-based Chiba Film, the animated production faithfully interprets the story of the song’s inception. As the legend goes, Deep Purple were in Montreux, Switzerland to record some tracks in a mobile recording studio rented from The Rolling Stones. They were due to record at the Montreux Casino there after Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention played. However, during the concert, a member of the audience shot a flare gun toward the roof, which instantly caught fire. The entire building burned down, and the song recounts the events of that fateful evening.
In the aftermath, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, singer Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, and drummer Ian Paice relocated to the nearby Grand Hotel (empty for the winter season) to record the album.
“It’s been an honour to put visuals to this song, undeniably one of the greatest rock tracks of all time,” says Directors Dan Gibling and Luke McDonnell. “The fact that the song is itself a story meant we had no shortage of inspiration for the scenes that accompany the music. Our idea for the video follows the fact that the band were under pressure to make this record on time after the events that unfolded at the casino.
“We wished to depict all these events and band members accurately, but also elevate the animated video into an exciting action packed chase that sees the band pursued by the stylus as they ride along the deep grooves of the record. On their journey we visit the places and heroes mentioned in the song, as well as encounters with fire, water, smoke, police and even dragons as they strive to take control of the record stylus and cut their track into the vinyl. The writing of the album was an adventure summed up in the lyrics, and we hope we have created an accompanying adventure that existing and new fans will enjoy.”
The video features the 6-minute-plus 2024 remix of the hit, which – in a full-circle moment – was done by Dweezil Zappa, son of Frank Zappa.
The 3-CD/LP/Blu-ray “Machine Head: Super Deluxe Edition” delivers multiple versions of the album, including new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes by Dweezil Zappa; a 1974 quadraphonic mix and a newly remastered version of the original album are also featured, and the package is rounded out with two live performances from the era – a March 9, 1972 show at the Paris Theatre in London during the “Machine Head Tour”, and a previously unreleased concert recorded in April 1971 at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland, before the events depicted in “Smoke On The Water.”
The new Dolby Atmos and 2024 mixes provide fresh and immersive perspectives on this classic album and were made by Zappa using the original tapes.
In the liner notes, Zappa says: “It’s one of those records where I think, ‘How did they come up with this?’ It’s got classical influences in the guitar and the keyboard, but then it’s got the blues and there’s little bits of funkiness. And you have this singer who has the most killer voice. All these things come together in a way where it doesn’t sound like commercial music, yet people got really excited about it. It’s a fascinating recipe.”
Deep Purple will launch a 2024 world tour in Australia in April.

"'Lay Down, Stay Down' was one of the first songs I wrote with Ritchie Blackmore at his house in Camberley, Surrey,” explains Coverdale. “I took the music demo home to Redcar, on the North East coast, where I maintained an apartment overlooking the North Sea. Glenn Hughes drove up from Cannock in the Midlands to hang out, and we messed around with the lyrics. It's a lyric about dealing with bullies - an aspect of the human condition I despise; I can't tell you the original 'working' title I had, as it's quite disgusting. It's about fighting back and not taking any s**t from anybody.

Due April 28, the project is an expanded reissue of the band’s 2008 album, “Good To Be Bad”, which marked Whitesnake’s first studio record following the group’s original farewell tour in 1997, after which they disbanded before reforming for live shows again in 2003.
The “comeback” project – which went on to score Top 10 status in several European countries – saw band founder David Coverdale working with a lineup that included guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach, keyboardist Timothy Drury, bassist Uriah Duffy, and drummer Chris Frazier.
Arriving next month in sync with the project’s 15th anniversary, the 4CD/1Blue-ray Super Deluxe Edition of “Still Good To Be Bad” delivers two new versions of the original album (one remastered and the other newly-remixed), a selection of rare and unreleased studio and live recordings from the period, and videos all the music videos and interviews, and some live performances from the world tour in support of the project.
In addition to the Super Deluxe Edition, three other versions of “Still Good To Be Bad” will also be available on April 28: the album’s 2023 Remix will be released on vinyl as a double-LP and a single CD, while a 2CD set includes the remixed and remastered versions of the album.

Whitesnake have pulled out of an upcoming North American tour with the Scorpions while singer David Coverdale continues to deal with a health issue.
“It is with profound disappointment and a heavy heart,” says Coverdale, “that I must announce that Whitesnake will no longer be able to join The Scorpions on their US and Canadian tour due to my continued treatment for a persistent upper respiratory infection that affects my ability to perform. This includes the cancellation of our own headlining shows as well.
“While Whitesnake will no longer be on the tour, the Scorpions will be continuing on. We Wish Our Good Friends, The Scorpions Every Success!!! We Wish You Well.”
Last month, Whitesnake cancelled the remaining dates of a farewell European tour due to “continuing health challenges”; the shutdown followed a series of issues experienced by band members, including Coverdale, who was put on doctor’s rest after being diagnosed with an infection of the sinus and trachea.
Whitesnake’s last performance at France’s Hellfest on June 23.
The Scorpions are scheduled to open the North American tour August 21 in Toronto, ON.

Whitesnake has cancelled a number of upcoming European dates on their farewell tour after David Coverdale was diagnosed with multiple illnesses.
Coverdale released a statement advising fans on his status as the group will miss scheduled concerts in Milan, Italy (June 28) and Vienna, Austria (June 30).
“Dear Whitesnake fans around the world,”began Coverdale, “We have been rocking our way across the globe on the first part of our Farewell Tour giving all we’ve got to you, the fans. The rigors of the road are the same for all of us and we have been trying to keep everyone healthy and safe. Unfortunately we have been hit recently with a couple of situations that we have been dealing with, the best we can..
“First our beloved band leader Reb Beach went down temporarily and he missed a couple of shows while he mended (and is much better now, by the way). Then the rock of our band, the Legendary Tommy Aldridge went down and we unfortunately were not able to play the Rock Imperium Festival in Cartagena this past Saturday (very regrettable and all apologies to our Spanish fans and friends). Tommy was bad enough at the time to have missed the first show ever in his career - The GOOD news is that he is feeling better and is anxious to get back out there to perform for all of you.”
“Unfortunately I have now been hit hard as well,” he explains. “I started feeling a bit under the weather two days ago, and was just diagnosed with an infection of the sinus & trachea. The doctor recommends 5 days of no singing and bed rest. Sadly, that means that we are not going to be able to do the upcoming shows in Milan, Vienna and a decision on Zagreb is about to be made. I’m very sorry to all the fans who had planned to come see our Farewell Tour in each of those cities - it’s my intention to get better as soon as possible and be able to pick up with the remaining shows of the European Farewell Tour. You are all in our hearts!!”
Coverdale issued an update on June 28, writing: “As stated earlier, I am still under doctor’s orders of bed rest, and to not sing for 5 days as i recover from this sinus infection. That time frame includes the show in Zagreb this Saturday, July 2nd so we are unfortunately going to have to cancel the Zagreb show as well.
"This is obviously very sad for us, especially our band members that were getting to perform before hometown crowds; Michele Luppi, our Italian Stallion was looking forward to playing in Milan in front of his friends and family, and of course Dino Jelusic, the Pride of Croatia was going to be able to give his all, to his hometown of Zagreb. We regret that this is necessary in our attempt to get healthy and be able to finish the rest of our tour.”
