The 50th anniversary of the Beatles arrival at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport will be celebrated this Friday, February 7 with a live event that includes the unveiling of a historical marker.
The New York Port Authority will unveil the marker during a ceremony at JFK's Central Terminal Area, the same spot where the Beatles gave their first U.S. press conference.
The band Liverpool will play some of the group’s classic tunes at the event, which will also see a delegation from Liverpool, England on hand for the occasion - including Lord Mayor Councillor Gary Millar.
On Sunday at 8 PM ET, CBS will broadcast “The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute To The Beatles", a TV special marking the 50th anniversary of The Beatles debut on the Ed Sullivan Show.
The Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964 is one of the most watched television events ever — with 74 million people tuning in to watch the group perform five songs during the variety hour. It is considered by many historians and critics as one of the most important moments in music and television.
On their Sullivan debut, The Beatles performed “All My Loving”, “Till There Was You”, “She Loves You”, “I Saw Her Standing There” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand.”
