John Mellencamp will donate an archived collection of his life and work to Indiana University.
The collection will include items related to his iconic artistry, social activism and philanthropy, and it holds original creative works, photographs, instruments and other significant memorabilia.
IU President Pamela Whitten announced the news at the Mellencamp Symposium held recently on the IU Bloomington campus.
“John’s impact on music and American culture is immense,” said Whitten. “On behalf of Hoosiers everywhere, I am exceptionally proud of John’s lifelong association with IU and deeply grateful to him for selecting the university as the permanent home for his archives. His collection will be an incredible resource for arts scholars and a clear source of inspiration to our students. We are thrilled to honor him and celebrate his many contributions to music, art and IU.”
The donation of his archives was one of several announcements made at the one-of-a-kind symposium that brought academic scholars, music industry leaders, journalists and more to campus for a deep dive into the cultural and social impact of Mellencamp’s vast oeuvre. The day included interactive talks, panel discussions and a live interview with the Hoosier singer.
"Mellencamp has created an important body of work that has earned him both critical regard and an enormous audience," said Anthony DeCurtis, a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine who was on hand to interview the rocker at the Mellencamp Symposium. "His songs document the joys and struggles of ordinary people seeking to make their way, and he has consistently brought the fresh air of common experience to the typically glamour-addled world of popular music."
Mellencamp began to paint earnestly in 1980, drawing inspiration for his artwork from the German Expressionism movement of the 20th century. His works of art have been featured in gallery exhibitions across the nation, and he recently released a coffee table art book featuring 170 original works entitled “John Mellencamp: American Paintings and Assemblages.”
A Bloomington resident whose music career spans more than four decades, Mellencamp kicked off his extensive Live and In Person 2023 North American tour at Indiana University Auditorium with two shows early last month.

John Mellencamp is joined by Bruce Springsteen on “Did You Say Such A Thing”, the latest single from his new album, “Strictly A One-Eyed Jack.”
The pairing was first heard last fall on the album’s lead single, “Wasted Days”, and Springsteen also appears on the project’s closing track, “A Life Full Of Rain.”
"Bruce came to Indiana and stayed at my house,” Mellencamp tells USA Today. “I have a studio (nearby). He stayed for four or five days. Bruce is a good guy. He’s a sweet guy, and I think the world of him. We come from very similar backgrounds – small towns.
"Bruce and I have known each other since we were kids, but I was always kind of considered the poor man’s Springsteen. That didn’t bother me. I thought it was just lazy journalism. But Bruce and I have grown to be almost brothers, and I love the guy. He’s been an inspiration and I told him, you made me work harder, I’ve gotta compete with that. Bruce was a blessing to me all along. Maybe I didn’t see it that way, but I do now."
The 2022 album marks Mellencamp’s 25th studio release and first since the 2018 covers project, “Other’s People’s Stuff.”

John Mellencamp is streaming his new album, “Strictly A One-Eyed Jack”, in sync with its release on January 21.
The project presents a dozen new songs, including three with Bruce Springsteen, with whom Mellencamp shared the set’s lead single, “Wasted Days”, back in September.
“I still make albums, even though there’s not a lot of demand for albums in today’s singles world,” the rocker tells the Wall Street Journal. “I still look at albums as a distinctive piece of work, not just a bunch of songs.”
“I kind of looked at it when I was putting it together as this is one guy speaking,” Mellencamp reveals to Forbes. “So all the songs are really one guy speaking, as opposed to there's this song and that song, and this song, and that song. It's just one guy talking about his life, his future, his self.”
Mellencamp recently issued the track, “Chasing Rainbows”, as the latest preview of the album ahead of its arrival, and has now released another song with Springsteen, “Did You Say Such A Thing”, alongside the album’s release.

The April 11 live-streamed virtual benefit concert, “At Home With Farm Aid” – featuring Neil Young, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews – raised over $500,000 for American family farmers impacted by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Streamed live by hennemusic and hosted by Nelson and his sons, Lukas and Micah, the webcast – also broadcast via AXS TV – saw each of the players dial in from their own homes and studios to deliver unique live performances of classic tracks.
The evening’s many highlights included Nelson and his sons performing his signature hit “On The Road Again” and “I Thought About You, Lord"; Matthews covering Nelson’s “Ain’t It Funny How Time Slips Away,” as well as the fan-favorite “Satellite,” and his new song “Windows;” Mellencamp performing “Jack And Diane” and “Rain On The Scarecrow;” and Young performing “Vampire Blues” and “Helpless."
The money raised from the event is helping Farm Aid invest in farmer-led solutions to the COVID-19 crisis: making emergency grants to farmers and ranchers in need; creating comprehensive resources for farmers; connecting farmers to legal, financial, and mental health support resources; supporting local, state, and national farm organizations; and advocating for COVID-19 recovery funds and resources from the federal government for short-term relief and long-term resilience.

“If you’ve already donated, thank you,” says organizers. “If you haven’t donated yet, there’s still time to provide immediate assistance to farmers and ranchers who are struggling.”
Farm Aid board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews teamed up to raise funds for US family farmers during the global health crisis with a live-stream concert event, “At Home With Farm Aid”, on April 11.
Streamed live by hennemusic and hosted by Nelson and his sons, Lukas and Micah, the webcast – also broadcast via AXS TV – saw each of the players dial in from their own homes and studios to deliver unique live performances.
Matthews opened the program with “Funny How Time Slips Away”, a 1961 hit for Billy Walker that was written by Willie and has been covered by a number of artists through the years; “Satellite”, from his 1994 debut, “Under The Table And Dreaming” was followed by 2002’s “Bartender” before the singer wrapped up his set with a newly-written tune, “Windows.”
From his home base in Indiana, Mellencamp performed 2010’s “Save Some Time To Dream”, an abbreviated version of his 1982 smash, “Jack & Diane”, and 2008’s “Longest Days” before closing with 1985’s “Rain On The Scarecrow.”
Fresh from posting the third edition of his home concert series, “Fireside Sessions”, Young began his three-song performance with the “On The Beach” track, “Vampire Blues”, before delivering “Love And Only Love” from 1990’s “Ragged Glory”, and ending with the CSNY fave, “Helpless.”
Nelson and his sons urged viewers to donate to Farm Aid before running through three songs of their own, including Willie’s 1996 tune, “I Thought About You, Lord”; “Hands On The Wheel” from his 1975 classic, “Red Headed Stranger”, was next and followed by the webcast’s closing track, “On The Road Again.”
American farmers are facing a new set of challenges due to the current global health crisis, according to Nelson.
“The coronavirus has disrupted our entire country and is a grave threat to all of us,” says Willie. “One of its many impacts is that it has helped us to better see the value of essential people like healthcare workers, grocery store clerks, delivery truck drivers, and farmers and ranchers.
“Farm Aid has worked for 35 years to build a family farm centered agricultural system, and we are here now to support farmers and ranchers in this crisis, without whom we could not eat. The time to build a resilient family farm food system is now!”

AXS-TV is also airing a “Best Of Farm Aid 2019” special on Sunday, April 12 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson and Dave Matthews have been announced as headliners for Farm Aid 2019.
The four Farm Aid board members will be on hand for the September 21 event at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI, where they’ll be joined by a lineup that will include Bonnie Raitt, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Jamey Johnson, Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real, and Tanya Tucker, among others, with more artists to be revealed later this summer.
The organization says the 2019 edition of the annual festival “underscores the severe crisis in farm country” in an economic climate similar to the one that sparked the first Farm Aid concert in 1985.
Median farm income is expected to be -$1,449 in 2019, and while net farm income this year is projected to be 8% higher than prior year levels, it will remain among the bottom 25% of all time. Farmer stress also is growing, with the risk of depression and suicide among people working in agriculture increasing as compared to the general population. Calls to Farm Aid’s farmer hotline have borne this out, with a 109% increase in calls in 2018.
“With devastating weather, low prices and harmful farm and trade policies, America’s family farmers are facing immense challenges to hold on to their farms. It’s not right … family farmers are essential for all of us,” says Farm Aid President and Founder Willie Nelson. “By bringing our festival to the heart of the struggle, we will stand side by side with farmers. At Farm Aid 2019, we’ll highlight solutions and show our support for family farmers’ contributions to our health, economy and environment.”
“We’re bringing Farm Aid to the heartland because we need to show the country what’s happening to the people who grow our food and take care of our soil and water,” adds Mellencamp. “We want family farmers to know that we won’t let them go down without a fight. And neither should you – farmers need us, and we need farmers.”
Beyond the music, Farm Aid will host Homegrown Concessions that showcase family farm-sourced ingredients at all the festival’s food stands.
A limited number of pre-sale tickets will be made available for sale beginning Wednesday, July 10 at 10 a.m. CDT via farmaid.org/festival, with general public tickets going on sale Friday, July 12 at 10 a.m. CDT.
Since the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on the land, the non-profit organization has raised $57 million to promote a strong and resilient family farm system of agriculture.
A man was arrested by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department on February 7 for breaking into the Indiana home of John Mellencamp.
According to The Seymour Tribune, police responded to an alarm at the residence at 6 a.m. after Robert Carter drove through an entry gate and kicked in the door of the rocker’s home, where he was found and taken into custody.
Police say Carter admitted to kicking in the door of the primary residence, and told officers he was there to “arrest Mellencamp for supporting a government” which Carter did not support.
No one was at the home at the time of the incident.
Carter was arrested on a Level 4 felony charge of burglary, a Level 6 felony charge of residential entry and a Level 6 felony charge of criminal trespassing; a Level 4 felony carries a sentence of between two and 12 years, if convicted.
Police confirmed that Carter had also been arrested the day before the incident at Mellencamp’s on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a handgun without a license after his recent social media posts prompted an advisory to law enforcement to be watchful of him, according to a news release.
On the day Carter was found in Mellencamp’s home, the singer opened up a US tour in support of his latest album, “Other People’s Stuff”, in South Bend, IN.
Culled from seminal albums, compilations, unearthed sessions and documentaries, the project presents a collection of previously-released tracks Mellencamp recorded between 1993 and 2018.
John Mellencamp’s latest album, “Other People’s Stuff”, has delivered the Indiana rocker his highest US chart position in a decade.
Culled from seminal albums, compilations, unearthed sessions and documentaries, the project presents a collection of previously-released tracks Mellencamp recorded between 1993 and 2018.
According to Billboard, Mellencamp’s 24th studio set debuts at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 with 44,000 units sold – nearly all from traditional album sales – while marking his first appearance in the Top 10 since 2008’s “Life, Death, Love And Freedom” also reached the No. 7 position.
The project’s first-week results were bolstered by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with the singer’s upcoming US tour; dubbed “The John Mellencamp Show”, the series will begin in South Bend, IN on February 7.
Mellencamp made headlines last month with news that he became engaged to actress Meg Ryan, who revealed the news via her social media sites with a hand-drawn doodle of the couple accompanied by the caption, “ENGAGED!”
The pair have dated on and off since 2010; it will be the fourth marriage for the 67-year-old Mellencamp and the second for Ryan, 57, who was previously wed to fellow actor Dennis Quaid.

Actress Meg Ryan has announced her engagement to rocker John Mellencamp.
According to Billboard, Ryan revealed the news via her social media sites on Thursday with a hand-drawn doodle of the couple accompanied by the caption, “ENGAGED!”
The couple have dated on and off since 2010.
Mellencamp, 67, has previously been married three times, while this will be the second marriage for Ryan, 56, who was previously wed to fellow actor Dennis Quaid.
"I can confirm John Mellencamp and Meg Ryan are engaged," a rep for Mellencamp told Billboard.
The project will deliver a collection of classic tracks by Mellencamp as culled from his seminal albums, compilations, unearthed sessions and documentaries.
