Def Leppard singer’s Down ‘N’ Outz to release live DVD

Down ‘N’ Outz – the Mott The Hoople-inspired side project of Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott – is set to release its first live DVD.

"Live At The Hammersmith Odeon"
was filmed at the legendary London venue on October 6, 2009 when Down ‘N’ Outz opened for the reunited Mott The Hoople.

There’s some cool launch plans for the DVD: it will first be available at merchandise stands at shows on the British Paul Rodgers/Down ‘N’ Outz tour, which starts next week.

A limited edition of only 500 copies will be made available initially, all of which are personally signed and numbered by Joe and the rest of the band. Any remaining copies, and a regular (unsigned) version will be available through the band’s web site shortly after the tour.

Bonus material for the package includes footage from the Dave Kilner tribute show (featuring Leppard’s bass player Rick Savage), three promo videos and a behind-the-scenes documentary.

Down ‘N’ Outz
"Live At The Hammersmith Odeon" DVD
Release date: April 2011

01. Golden Opportunity
02. Overnight Angels
03. One More Chance To Run
04. Storm
05. Shouting And Pointing
06. Career (No Such Thing As Rock 'n' Roll)
07. Who Do You Love
08. By Tonight
09. England Rocks
10. Good Times

As for the opening slot on Rodgers tour, Elliott was thrilled the rock legend personally requested Down ‘N’ Outz for the occasion.

“Well, I wouldn’t say he insisted, it’s not like he’s going to beat me up if I didn’t do it but yeah, he did ask for us. And I thought that was really sweet,” Joe told the Express & Star. “I don’t know Paul like, as best friends, but we e-mail.”

Elliott met Rodgers through a pretty solid connection. “We first met in 2005 when he was with Queen and I went to see them in Dublin,” tells Joe. Brian May, who I’ve known for years, said ‘Have you never met Paul?’ So he took me in to see him and, of course, I’d done the sneaky, I’d taken my iPod with me because we’d just finished recording “Little Bit Of Love,” the Free song for the "Yeah!" album, and I took it in and said ‘Here, have you got any headphones?’

“And he was really impressed, he said ‘This sounds great, I never thought I’d hear anybody cover this song.’ That was like a kind of bonding moment,” continued the Leppard frontman. “He must have heard the album, I don’t know. Until I see him I won’t be able to ask him. I was quite flattered that he did actually request us.”

New video: Joe Elliott's Down ‘N’ Outz – “Overnight Angels”

Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott's Down ‘N’ Outz have just released “Overnight Angels,” the second video from their debut album, “My Re-Generation.”

Down ‘N’ Outz is Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott meets The Quireboys; the guys hooked up to do a tribute to Mott The Hoople and something more happened along the way…

"When Mott The Hoople announced they were reforming for a week's worth of shows at the Hammersmith Odeon, I was asked that I participate in some capacity,” said Elliott. “They've always been my favourite band and it's nice to see the rest of the rock world finally catch up and give them their due."

"But, what was I to do?” continued Joe. “It was suggested to me that the Quireboys would be up for offering their services. This was perfect! A fan since their first album, I loved the idea of working with a band as enthusiastic to do this as I was. I decided that the thing to do was play some songs that like-minded people thought they would never hear live again, if ever, songs by spin offs of Mott the Hoople - songs by Mott, Ian Hunter and British Lions. Songs that are close to my heart, songs that I've played every week for the best part of 35 years on record, cassette, CD, iPod and now live."

In addition to Joe Elliott (Vocals/Guitar/Keyboards), the band features The Quireboys' Paul Guerin (Guitar), Guy Griffin (Guitar), Keith Weir (keyboards) and Phil Martini (drums) and finally bassist Ronnie Garrity (Raw Glory).

The Down 'N’ Outz supported Mott The Hoople at one of their legendary 2009 reformation shows at Hammersmith Odeon; following huge fan reaction, the one night project took on a life and energy of its own and an album project was born.

Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott to launch his own beer

Looks like Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott has launched a new side project…again.

With Leppard on hiatus this year, Elliott developed his one-off Mott The Hoople tribute band - Down ‘N’ Outz – into a full album.

Now, Joe takes his side project in a different direction, with the launch of “Down ‘N’ Outz” beer this Wednesday (15) in Dublin.

Down ‘N’ Outz beer is described as "a pilsner style" that has "a deep, rich malt character, with generous hop bitterness". It will be brewed and bottled by The Porterhouse Brewing Company, a small chain with pubs in Ireland and the U.K.

"Over the years I've noticed a lot of musicians putting their names to a variety of wines etc which, as nice as a glass of red or white is, well, it's not very rock and roll is it?!,” said Elliott. "Beer or lager seem to be the drink of choice at nearly every gig I've ever played, or attended, so for me it's a much cooler thing to do, and having seen how The Porterhouse put quality over quantity, I'm extremely happy to get involved with Oliver (Hughes, co-founder) and his gang."

The launch takes place on Wednesday, 15 September at The Porterhouse North Rock Garden in Glasnevin (Dublin).

Def Leppard update

Rumours have been flying around for a while about the status of Def Leppard.

Break-up talk started last October, after Leppard cancelled 23 dates on their North American tour due to “unforeseen personal matters.” Joe Elliott put that speculation to rest recently, reporting that he was needed at home while his wife was pregnant with their soon-to-be-born child; the two became proud parents to a son earlier this year.

In addition to being a new dad, Elliott has also been busy with his side project, Down’N Outz; the band was formed specifically to open a series of reunion shows for Mott The Hoople last year at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. Down’N Outz is Elliott and members of The Quireboys, and they play only Mott-related tunes – songs by Mott, Ian Hunter and British Lions.

Down’N Outz debut, “My Regeneration,” is out this July, but fans of Classic Rock magazine can get a 10-track advance sampler free with the June issue.

Here’s Joe talking about the new project, as well as some of Leppard’s plans this year:
