VIDEO: Tom Cruise talks about singing for Def Leppard

The new Tom Cruise film, Rock Of Ages, hits theaters this Friday.

The Broadway play-turned-movie is billed as a love story told through the music of Bon Jovi, Journey, Poison, Twisted Sister and other artists from the 1980s.

Cruise plays Stacee Jaxx, the biggest rock star in the world; in the film, he sings renditions of Def Leppard’s "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and Guns N’ Roses’ "Paradise City."

The actor promoted Rock of Ages during an appearance last Friday on The Tonight Show, with Cruise explaining that he found out the day before filming that members of Def Leppard would be stopping by to listen.

"I'm just trying to honor you," Cruise told the band before singing their smash hit. "We played the whole song, and most of the crew was watching [Def Leppard] for their reaction. The band's lead singer [Joe Elliott] walks over and points at me, and I can't say what he said ... some sort of obscenity, and they had us perform it again for them. They were very generous."

Tom’s version of the Leppard smash appears on the "Rock Of Ages: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack," which is available Tuesday.

Def Leppard have just released newly-recorded versions of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Rock Of Ages.”

The UK band have hitched their train to the Rock Of Ages promo juggernaut, as the Tom Cruise film of the same name hits theatres this month.

Leppard have billed their summer tour as Rock Of Ages, after their 1983 hit; the group will be joined by Poison and Lita Ford for a trek that begins June 20 in Salt Lake City.

Monday night, Leppard stopped by The Tonight Show to perform “Rock Of Ages.”

Def Leppard fans know 2012 is the summer of Rock Of Ages.

The UK rockers have issued a newly-recorded version of their hit of the same name from 1983’s “Pyromania,” they’ve used the song to name their summer tour with Poison and Lita Ford, and the Broadway play-turned-movie Rock Of Ages - starring Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand and Julianne Hough - hits theatres June 15.

The film is a love story told through the music of Bon Jovi, Journey, Poison, Twisted Sister and other artists from the 1980s.
