Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi named Greatest Metal Guitarist

Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi has been named the Greatest Metal Guitarist Of All Time by Gibson guitars.

In publishing a Top Ten, the equipment manufacturer cites Iommi’s dark, distinct guitar textures in Black Sabbath as helping spearhead the heavy metal movement and its signature massive riffing.

Joining Iommi on the list are Metallica’s James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett at #2, Randy Rhoads at #3, Dream Theater's John Petrucci at #4 and Dimebag Darrell of Pantera at #5.

“Of all of rock ‘n’ roll’s many styles, metal is the most brutal, with its high volume, broadening textures and pure drama,” writes the gear maker. “No matter the exact sub-genre, metal music is held together by a reliance on loud, riffing guitars and, of course, an inspiriting lead guitarist.”

Gibson does not clarify the origin of the list’s creation, suggesting that no reader poll or survey were involved in putting the Top 10 together.

Iommi and original Sabbath members Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler are currently working on a new album with producer Rick Rubin; drummer Bill Ward continues to sit out the planned reunion over a contract dispute.

VIDEO: Mick Jagger rocks Saturday Night Live

Mick Jagger rocked the season finale of Saturday Night Live over the weekend.

The Stones frontman proved to be very adept at comedy, having fun with his opening monologue and participating in several skits.

The musical highlights were many, and they started with Jagger joining Arcade Fire for “The Last Time.”

Midway through the program, things kicked into musical overdrive when the Foo Fighters jammed some thundering versions of a couple of Stones classics, including “19th Nervous Breakdown” and “It’s Only Rock N’ Roll (But I Like It).”

Late in the episode, Jeff Beck sat in with Mick for a 2012 US election blues number, with Beck wailing on his six-string.

UPDATE: SNL confirms Arcade Fire and Foo Fighters with Jeff Beck to perform with Mick Jagger

After a few days of rumors, Saturday Night Live has confirmed the musical guests that will be joining Mick Jagger on the show’s season finale this week.

In addition to his hosting duties, Jagger will perform with Arcade Fire and the Foo Fighters with Jeff Beck.

Rumors surfaced a few days ago that the Rolling Stones have been rehearsing secretly in New York, prompting speculation that the band will make a surprise appearance on the program with their frontman.

SNL pre-promoted the upcoming season finale during this past Saturday’s show, listing Jagger and the three musical guests that will appear alongside the Stones singer.

This will be the rock icon and multiple Grammy-award winner's first time as host and third appearance as musical guest.

SNL: Mick Jagger to perform with Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire

Rumors continue to circulate surrounding Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger’s appearance on Saturday Night Live next weekend.

Jagger is set to host and perform on the May 19 season finale of the long-running weekend series.

In the past few days, reports have surfaced that the Stones have been rehearsing secretly in New York, prompting speculation that the band will make a surprise appearance on the program.

Now, Entertainment Weekly reports that the Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire will perform with Jagger on the show.

The finale marks Mick’s first time carrying the whole show, although it’s his third time as a musical performer.
