Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi named Greatest Metal Guitarist

Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi has been named the Greatest Metal Guitarist Of All Time by Gibson guitars.

In publishing a Top Ten, the equipment manufacturer cites Iommi’s dark, distinct guitar textures in Black Sabbath as helping spearhead the heavy metal movement and its signature massive riffing.

Joining Iommi on the list are Metallica’s James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett at #2, Randy Rhoads at #3, Dream Theater's John Petrucci at #4 and Dimebag Darrell of Pantera at #5.

“Of all of rock ‘n’ roll’s many styles, metal is the most brutal, with its high volume, broadening textures and pure drama,” writes the gear maker. “No matter the exact sub-genre, metal music is held together by a reliance on loud, riffing guitars and, of course, an inspiriting lead guitarist.”

Gibson does not clarify the origin of the list’s creation, suggesting that no reader poll or survey were involved in putting the Top 10 together.

Iommi and original Sabbath members Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler are currently working on a new album with producer Rick Rubin; drummer Bill Ward continues to sit out the planned reunion over a contract dispute.

Dream Theater film live DVD in Buenos Aires

Dream Theater played two shows in Buenos Aires this week and the action was captured for a forthcoming live DVD.

The August 19 and August 20 concerts at Estadio Luna Park were professionally filmed and recorded for the band's next live DVD, to be released sometime next year.

Part of the group’s latest world tour in support of “A Dramatic Turn of Events,” the concerts were filmed by Over the Edge Productions with Mike Leonard in the director's chair.

Last year, OTE produced a documentary for Dream Theater entitled “The Spirit Carries On,” which was released on DVD with their album and chronicles the journey they took to find their new drummer, Mike Mangini.

The concert DVD will showcase the best of the two-night live event filmed with up to 10 cameras and ultimately released on BluRay disc. Bonus features will also include documentary segments with the band as a follow up to “The Spirit Carries On” movie.

“We have had such an incredible time performing all across the globe over the past year and it has been an amazing and event filled tour,” says John Petrucci. “We are really excited about ending things up in South America and the two-night concert and DVD shoot in Argentina is sure to be an amazing evening! Better yet is to be working with Mike Leonard and everyone at [Over the Edge Productions] once again. Our experience with Mike and crew on “The Spirit Carries On” documentary was nothing short of spectacular and we know that they will deliver our best work to date. Between the show, documentary and interview footage, we are confident that Mike will not only deliver an epic concert video, but that he will capture the real essence of [Dream Theater’s] South American experience to be enjoyed by our fans all around the world.”

Dream Theater keyboardist releases SpaceWiz App

SpaceWiz — the latest app by Wizdom Music's Jordan Rudess, the keyboardist/Continuum-player/multi-instrumentalist for Grammy-nominated prog rock/metal icons Dream Theater, and chief programmer Kevin Chartier — was released for iOS devices on Thursday.

"We partnered with developer Tobias Miller to see if an otherworldly dream I had could be made into reality,” said Rudess. “He was able to bring it completely to life."

Rudess and Miller worked together to create every unique sound and image.

The SpaceWiz app is available now at iTunes here.

There are over 250 on-board instruments, as well as forty-five presets and access to control external midi instruments. SpaceWiz allows the viewer to interact with and control their environment at the highest level of complexity.

With the manipulation of their own fingers on the playing surface, together with the technological wonders of the Chaos and Satellite generators, they fabricate particles, which then collide into planets. One can even add the onboard real time synthesizer with its independent set of sounds and parameters to create their sonic masterpiece. SpaceWiz will guide them on a uniquely woven audio-visual journey while they enjoy the ultimate sonic/visual wallpaper, or get busy and start throwing their own particles around the universe. Users can even try rolling the dice for total randomization and see what happens.

For creators who want to play a larger role in their SpaceWiz experience, they have the opportunity to build their audio/visual world from the void. Regardless of the user's desires, this app will reward them with a mind-blowing creation.

Jordan and Kevin are also the creators of the top-selling synth-app MorphWi which won first place in the category of "Best Music Creation App" in the 2010 Billboard Music App Awards, "Best Musical App" in the Best App Ever Awards and best "IPhone/Ipad/Itouch" app in the Electronic Musician's 2011 Editor's Choice Awards. In addition to MorphWiz, they released the popular music apps Sample Wiz, and GeoSynth as well as Tachyon, which was released on July 25.

Dream Theater are currently on tour in South and Central America.

VIDEO: Dream Theater drummer a Boston Bruins fan

While playing in Toronto recently on their tour in support of “A Dramatic Turn Of Events,” Dream Theater drummer Mike Mangini hooked up with The Score sports television network to talk a little hockey – this is Canada, after all.

Mangini spoke about his love of hockey and named his favorite team.

The Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins,” said Mangini. “I saw Bobby Orr score [that famous Stanley Cup-winning overtime goal against St. Louis] in 1970; I saw that one on TV in black and white, with the TV [signal] all scattered and the family trying to tune it in…cheering and crying. So ya, I’m a fan from back then.”

Among other Bruins highlights, Mike offered Cam Neely finally sticking it to the Canadiens. I’m scarred with the memory of the entire Montreal Canadiens rosters from the 70s; Ken Dryden, the Mahovlich brothers [Frank and Peter]…scarring because they won all the time. I knew that once the Canadiens and the Bruins got finished, that the winner of that [series] would kill the next one just because they helped each other get better.”

There’s more sports talk with Mangini – check out the video.

VIDEO: Dream Theater keyboardist pays tribute to Steve Jobs

The world took notice when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs passed away October 5 at the age of 56, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

It’s possible we’ll see more of these, but the musical world took notice, too, with many musicians posting their thoughts online about the influence Jobs, and his work, had on the themselves, and the planet.

Two days after Jobs’ passing, Dream Theater were playing in Montreal, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess offered fans a musical tribute to Steve, performing an instrumental on an Ipad using MorphWiz, along with the Korg Kronos.

“Although I never met Steve Jobs personally, his work greatly influenced my life and my work,” says Rudess. “I'm grateful to have been touched by his wizardry, and that he shared his vision with all of us. This is a song I wrote for my own iOS instrument called “MorphWiz,” and is a tribute to an amazing and inspirational human being.”

Dream Theater are in the middle of a North American tour in support of their newly-released album, “A Dramatic Turn Of Events.”

VIDEO: Dream Theater keyboardist discusses Mike Portnoy departure

Another video has surfaced with a Dream Theater member discussing the departure of Mike Portnoy and the band’s efforts to regroup, rebuild and move forward.

“It’s been an incredible last twelve months, or so, just getting this machine known as Dream Theater to where we are now,” keyboardist Jordan Rudess tells Brutalitopia. “When we lost Mike Portnoy, it was very intense, it was very emotional: we don’t know exactly where we would end up, but we all knew we wanted to make music. We had a positive vision in mind, and we energized finding Mike Mangini, who’s been just incredible.”

“Then we went into the studio,”
Jordan contines, “I think we made a really good album, and when we go on tour, all I see is happy faces. I think people are just really into the fact that Dream Theater is back, and we’re strong.”

“The important message for everybody out there to understand,"
says Rudess, "is that Mike Portnoy really did want a break and he asked for that, and now he’s got that. Hopefully, everybody will make the kind of music they want to make, and be happy, and we only wish him the very best.”

The band’s new album, “A Dramatic Turn Of Events,” is out and the band are now on the road playing live across North America.

Dream Theater guitarist discusses Mike Portnoy’s departure

Following the 2010 departure of Mike Portnoy, Dream Theater have moved on with new drummer Mike Mangini and, seemingly, haven’t missed a beat.

The band’s new album, “A Dramatic Turn Of Events,” is out and the band are now on the road playing live across North America.

The Portnoy situation is a topic the group will likely have to address for some time to come, and guitarist John Petrucci does just that in a new interview with Guitar World.

One of the first signs of an issue with Portnoy was the drummer’s plan to tour with Avenged Sevenfold at a time when Dream Theater were planning to record.

"Mike had played on Avenged's album ['Nightmare'] and that was fine,” explains Petrucci. “We all do side projects when time permits. But touring with the band, that was a different story. That was taking significant time away from Dream Theater at a point when we were all planning to start recording. Initially, we put off recording to go on tour with Iron Maiden — that was too good an opportunity for us to turn down. And then when Mike said he was going on the road with Avenged Sevenfold right after the Maiden tour, that didn't feel right."

Portnoy then asked DT to take an extended hiatus, with no timeline to regroup. “In the end, it was something we couldn't do,” says John. “Mike wanted to hold all the cards. He wanted to get back together when it suited him. We couldn't abide by that. So he decided to quit. It was quite a blow. As much as we wanted to continue as a band, we didn't want Mike to leave."

After quitting DT in September 2010, Portnoy then tried to come back to the band a few months later, but time was not on his side. “Mike Portnoy asking to be back in was a problem on a few levels,” maintains Petrucci. “First, we were very happy to have selected Mike Mangini [as the new drummer]. Second, [Mangini] had quit his teaching gig at Berklee. We certainly weren't going to hang him out to dry when he sacrificed so much for us. Mike Portnoy was too late in asking to come back. We had moved on."

It’s all a bit of a mystery to the guitarist, who has decided it’s best not to second guess Portnoy’s motivation. “I can't speak for him. I can only see things from my point of view,” he says. “For him to leave a successful band, one he had been with for 25 years… he must've had his reasons. I guess he really needed a change. Maybe he was confused or conflicted at the same time. I don't know. The biggest thing for me is to not be negative or resentful. I understand the way life is, and change is part of that. People get divorced, they leave companies, they quit bands — it happens. Mike needed a change in his life. That's really the only way I can look at it."

The full Petrucci session will appear in the November 2011 issue of Guitar World.

Dream Theater’s lawyer says no pending litigation by Mike Portnoy

There’s been an interesting development in the story of Mike Portnoy’s legal papers, filed this past spring, against his former band Dream Theater.

Rock news site Blabbermouth reports they were contacted by Dream Theater’s lawyer, Ronald S. Beinstock, to make it clear that there is currently "no pending litigation" between the current members of the band and Portnoy.

Courthouse News Service reported Portnoy filed papers against his former bandmates in April claiming that they “wrongfully excluded” him from the group and continue to “wrongfully using the name of the band in connection with [their] recording of an album without the participation or consent of [Portnoy].” The documents further allege that Dream Theater “are wrongfully using the name of the band in connection with the promotion of live performances by the individual defendants, without the participation or consent of [Portnoy].”

The April 27 filing names the Defendants as John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Jordan Rudess (keyboards), James LaBrie (vocals), along with associated companies Ytse Jam, Inc. and Infinity Tours, Inc.

In a letter to Blabbermouth dated Tuesday, Bienstock wrote, "On or around April 27, 2011, Mr. Portnoy filed a 'Notice With Summons.' This document is not a formal complaint. Further, the document was never served on any of the named defendants, rendering it moot. There is no pending litigation between Dream Theater and Mr. Portnoy.

Writing on his official forum, Portnoy commented, "I did NOT sue them....and second of all, I DESPERATELY tried to discuss matters with them personally to avoid ANYTHING LIKE THIS and yet THEY insisted on only using lawyers...so my lawyers filed those papers (BACK IN APRIL, mind you) as that was the position they chose to take...if the band would've talked to me, it would've NEVER come to that!!!

"All that aside, this was 6 months ago....so yes indeed, we have all moved on since then...I'm still really not allowed to discuss any of this publicly, but I feel everybody's hasty and half-truth filled witchhunt yesterday deserves to be addressed to help at least try to clear my name and reputation that was so wrongly tainted by yesterday's false conclusions...

"The fact is, when you have a band (or a corporation or marriage) for 25 years, there are business and financial things that need to be sorted out behind the scenes...however, it was incredibly LAME of Blabbermouth to exploit these private issues and divulge personal information that is clearly nobody's business other than our own. They are creating hate and negative propaganda and poisoning the minds and spirits of music fans around the world...shame on them."

Hmm…interesting stance by Portnoy – now it’s the media’s fault, somehow?

He admits papers were filed, so an action was taken, regardless of how he – or DT’s lawyer - wants to spin it now. We all know lawyers choose their language carefully – DT’s lawyer also confirmed papers were filed - so this event did factually happen.

Why Portnoy paid a lawyer good money to file papers with no intention of following through seems odd, on the surface, but maybe that’s a normal course of action as part of the legal process.

Mike Portnoy sued Dream Theater after he left group

Here’s some not-so-groovy news: drummer Mike Portnoy sued Dream Theater after he left the group last fall.

Courthouse News Service reports Portnoy, who left the band on his own after failing to convince fellow band members to take a break from the write/record/tour cycle, filed a lawsuit against his former bandmates in April claiming that they “wrongfully excluded” him from the group and continue to “wrongfully using the name of the band in connection with [their] recording of an album without the participation or consent of [Portnoy].”

The suit further alleges that Dream Theater “are wrongfully using the name of the band in connection with the promotion of live performances by the individual defendants, without the participation or consent of [Portnoy].”

The April 27 filing names the Defendants as John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Jordan Rudess (keyboards), James LaBrie (vocals), along with associated companies Ytse Jam, Inc. and Infinity Tours, Inc.

Now that the news has leaked, Portnoy says he can’t say a word about it.

“Everyone needs to chill out. Stop feeding into this negative poison on the net... I am legally NOT ALLOWED to speak of business matters, but I'm sure you realize there are two sides to every coin...” wrote Portnoy in a message to fans on Monday. “ If I could openly talk about this stuff and explain the REALITY of everything, I would love nothing more!!! But I am legally unable to discuss it... In the meantime, life is bright and positive...I am happy and so are they....so shouldn't YOU be too??? Don't believe the hype...Carpe Diem!"

Meanwhile, new drummer Mike Mangini has fit like a glove and been extremely well-received by fans during his first summer of shows with DT.

DT's new album, "A Dramatic Turn Of Events," was released this week.

A dramatic turn of events, indeed.

Ex-Dream Theater drummer recounts bizarre 9/11 coincidence

As we approach the tenth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy (now with Adrenaline Mob) recounts his recollections of the day in an interview with Noisecreep.

"I remember waking up Tuesday, September 11, 2001 to my wife telling me to put on the TV because I wasn't going to be going into NYC as planned,” recalls Portnoy. "Dream Theater was working in New York City at the time mixing our album 'Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence' and I would've been driving in that afternoon for our session. But as the events of the morning unfolded, I found myself glued to the TV in disbelief as to what I was witnessing. It was all too surreal. I felt like I was watching a Will Smith Hollywood film. It couldn't possibly be really happening.”

"When I finally did return to work in New York City a few days later, it was just as surreal as there was a sadness and almost deafening silence still lingering throughout the streets of Manhattan.”

"On a personal side note, one of the strangest coincidences of my career was that Dream Theater's 'Live Scenes From New York' was released on Tuesday, September 11th 2001, the cover artwork of which illustrated a big apple (representing New York City) with the World Trade Center in flames!”

“It has to be one of the most unbelievable coincidences in the history of rock album covers!,” declared Portnoy. “Suffice to say, we pulled the CDs off the shelves immediately and changed the cover art."

Although not tied to an international event, Lynyrd Skynyrd experienced a thematically similar situation with 1977’s “Street Survivors.” The original cover for that album featured the band surrounded by flames; three days after its release, the group’s plane crashed en route to Baton Rouge, LA, killing the pilot, co-pilot, Skynyrd's assistant road manager and three band members, and severely injuring most who survived the crash. The album’s cover was pulled and re-issued without the flames out of respect to those who perished.

Dream Theater: New song previews continue

The Dream Theater tease continues….

“On The Backs Of Angels,” the first single from the forthcoming new album, “A Dramatic Turn Of Events,” was released last month; the band have since shared previews of five additional tracks online.

Here comes preview #6: “Far From Heaven.”

Yup, that makes 7 of the disc’s 9 tracks already floating round online, so it looks like fans should expect the final 2 to appear before the album’s September 13 release.

DT keyboardist Jordan Rudess sat down with Music Radar to talk about the new disc, including the origins of “Far From Heaven.”

John Petrucci came in with a musical thought, if you will,” said Jordan. “He played me a couple of things, like, 'Hey, check this out.' He knows I'm the kind of guy who can pick up a mood or a vibe pretty easily.”

"One of the bands I really like is Coldplay,”
continued Rudess about his inspiration for the song. “I love how they keep common tones between chords, and they find interesting ways to change chords while maintaining common tones, which all works to create a certain sound. I've wanted to do that kind of thing for a long time. Before we did ‘Far From Heaven,’ I was looking at certain kinds of chords in that way. We went down that path harmonically – it was pretty cool."

“A Dramatic Turn Of Events” is due September 13, and the band launch a North American tour with openers Trivium on September 24 in San Francisco.

Dream Theater continue to ramp things up as the September 13 release of their new album, “A Dramatic Turn Of Events,” draws nearer.

The band has released a new interview with vocalist James LaBrie and guitarist John Petrucci, as the pair talk about all of the tracks on the upcoming release, which marks the recording debut of new drummer Mike Mangini.

Last month, DT released “On The Backs Of Angels,” the first single from the disc, and have since shared previews of four additional tracks online.

The prog-rockers kick off a North American tour on September 24 in San Francisco, with many dates on the first leg set to feature label mates Trivium.
