Megadeth announce new album and farewell tour plans

Megadeth has announced plans to release a new album and perform a farewell tour.

"There's so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional," says Dave Mustaine. "Most of them don't get to go out on their own terms on top, and that's where I'm at in my life right now. I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.

"We can't wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour,”
he continues. “If there was ever a perfect time for us to put out a new album, it's now. If there was ever a perfect time to tour the world, it's now. This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it's our last studio album. We've made a lot of friends over the years and I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour. Don't be mad, don't be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years.

“We have done something together that's truly wonderful and will probably never happen again. We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it's played, and we changed the world. The bands I played in have influenced the world. I love you all for it. Thank you for everything."

Megadeth will release their forthcoming album via Mustaine's Tradecraft imprint in partnership with Frontiers Label Group's new BLKIIBLK label. It will launch with the project's first single (TBA) in tandem with global pre-orders this fall, while the initial run of farewell tour dates will be announced later this year.

Mustaine formed Megadeth in Los Angeles in 1983; the band – who went on to sell more than 50 million records worldwide – will release its 17th studio album in 2026.

“Our ‘Crush The World’ tour has been a tremendous experience for the four of us,” says Mustaine. “We are all playing tight, and that has made it possible for me to really focus on solos and singing, we are playing more songs than ever before, and we are closer to each other, onstage AND off. I’m excited to see Mudvayne, and All That Remains. Join us as we Destroy All Enemies.”

Megadeth guitarist Kiko Loureiro to sit out next leg of US tour

Megadeth has revealed that guitarist Kiko Loureiro will sit out next leg of the band’s 2023 tour.

"Kiko has had something come up in his family life that requires him to miss this next leg of our "Crush The World" tour,” announced leader Dave Mustaine on social media. “I'II let him explain...”

"Kiko checking in here!,” begins the guitarist. “Our new record ‘The Sick, The Dying, and The Dead’ and our Crush The World tour have been great. The worldwide chart positions have been our best yet! We want to really thank you for that. I have something that is difficult to share, but we always like to keep you informed with the truth. I have to leave the tour for now, to be home with my children, and to help them face the difficult challenges that arise from us being 'Dads that work away from home.'

"I found a guitarist, Teemu Mantysaari, to fill in for me during the fall, and I think you'll be very happy. He's an amazing, incredible player. I have shared this with my partner in shred, Dave Mustaine, and to no surprise, he said, 'Go! Go be there for your family and keep us posted!'

"To my band mates and all of our fans around the world, see you all very soon, back out on the Killing Road!”

"We will not be cancelling the tour,”
adds Mustaine, “and we'll introduce you to Teemu on September 6th in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the Revel Arena. We are asking for your support and understanding at this time."

The fall leg of the series will wrap up with an October 6 appearance at the Aftershock festival in Sacramento, CA.

“The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!” sees Mustaine working alongside co-producer Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Parkway Drive) on the project, which debuted at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 last fall.

Megadeth to reunite with Marty Friedman for Budokan concert livestream

For the first time in more than 23 years, Megadeth alumni Marty Friedman will join the band on stage as the special guest for a one-off global livestream from the legendary Budokan Arena in Tokyo, Japan on February 27.

“Marty and I have remained friends over 23 years, since we last played together,” says Dave Mustaine. “However, I hear his music every night, and he still is among the top guitar players I’ve ever heard. This is an amazing treat for the fans, as well as myself. I am going to enjoy this as much as the fans are, and I’m sure many of you will catch me sneaking a peek during Marty’s appearance. Domo arigato, Marty-San!”

Friedman was in the Megadeth lineup throughout the 1990s, appearing on all of the band’s albums from 1990’s “Rust In Peace” to 1999’s “Risk.”

“When Marty said, ‘Hey, I can play at this gig,’ I thought, ‘This is so magnificent,'” Mustaine tells Rolling Stone. Friedman will join the band, which includes current lead guitarist Kiko Loureiro, for three songs for the gig’s encore. “It’s gonna be so much fun to get Kiko and Marty together, because they’re both geniuses on guitar. So this is like a gigantic birthday and Christmas present for me.”

“It has been a long time – 23 years to be exact since I’ve been on the same stage with Dave Mustaine making music,”
Friedman said in a statement. “We’ve both taken drastically different paths since then. That doesn’t change the fact that I’m extremely proud of the part that I played in Megadeth’s history and legacy. I’m also very, very proud of the band’s many great achievements and continued success in my absence. For right now, I just feel immense joy and some serious adrenaline. I am looking forward to playing with Megadeth at this very cool place, the Budokan.”

Billed as “They Only Come Out At Night”, the global livestream event can be viewed as it happens on Monday, February 27 at 6 p.m. Tokyo time (JST), and available on demand for two days.

The event will mark the group’s first-ever performance from the legendary venue.

Ticketholders will get access to the livestream, all re-broadcasts, and to on-demand replays. Fans can buy tickets here and watch all broadcasts and on-demand replays from anywhere around the world – except Japan, where it is only accessible via Wowow.

Megadeth sued over The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead cover art

Megadeth are reportedly being sued by the artist who created the artwork for their latest album, “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”, over claims he hasn’t received pay or credit for his work.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the legal action by New York-based illustrator and designer Brent Elliott White claims he has “created artwork and characters over time for Megadeth that have become an integral part of the band’s identity” and was contacted about this album in early 2020; the two entities didn’t sign a written contract at the time, according to the complaint, and the concept phase involved multiple revisions and edits and hundreds of hours of work.

By April 2021, the band had chosen a concept for the cover for "The Sick, the Dying … and the Dead!" and asked White to create art for an EP release; more than a year later, the artist states that Megadeth’s manager asked him for additional renderings of the artwork for stage decorations for an upcoming tour, and that led White to advise management that he didn’t have a contract and hadn’t been paid.

Megadeth released their sixteenth studio record in September of 2022.

White is suing Megadeth, UMG and others for copyright infringement and is asserting multiple claims under New York’s Freelance Isn’t Free Act, which requires a written contract for work valued at $800 or more, sets standards for the timing of payment and prohibits other behavior like dropping pay rates and retaliation.

White is asking the court for an injunction that would stop Megadeth and UMG from using the artwork and is seeking damages and disgorgement of profits.

You can read the full lawsuit filing at The Hollywood Reporter.

This week, Megadeth announced plans to livestream their first-ever performance from the legendary Budokan Arena in Tokyo, Japan on February 27.

You can pick up the new album here.

Megadeth tribute Judas Priest Rock Hall induction with cover of 1978 classic

Megadeth have released a cover of the 1978 Judas Priest classic, “Delivering The Goods”, exclusively via Amazon Music, as a tribute to the UK band on their recent induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

The song was featured on Judas Priest’s fifth album “Killing Machine”, which was issued in the US under the title “Hell Bent for Leather.”

“We’ve recorded our own rendition of Judas Priest’s ‘Delivering the Goods’ to celebrate their induction into the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” shared Megadeth on social media.

In a recent appearance on the BBC's The Rock Show With Johnnie Walker, Dave Mustaine chose Glenn Tipton as his “Rock God”, saying, "I had no idea how much Glenn Tipton and Judas Priest had influenced my guitar playing until I recently covered 'Delivering The Goods' with my band, Megadeth, and got to go over all those guitar riffs again. It was really revealing to me how much Glenn's playing had influenced me."

"I remember,”
he added, “when I was living with my mom and we moved in with my middle sister - I have three older sisters - and she was married to a police officer that was the Chief Of Police in a city called Stanton in California. He walked into his house and heard Priest blaring in the bedroom I was sharing with their son; that was the first time I ever stood up for metal. And when he stomped out, you know what I did? I put the record back on."

You can stream a preview of the Megadeth cover here, and/or listen to a fan-posted full version of the track below.

Judas Priest entered the Rock Hall on their third nomination; you can watch their 2022 induction performance here.

Megadeth recently picked up a 2023 Grammy Award nomination in the Best Metal Performance category for “We’ll Be Back”, the lead single from band’s new album, “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”

Megadeth debut new album in US Top 5

Megadeth has debuted their new album, “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”, in the US Top 5.

According to Billboard, the band’s sixteenth studio set enters the Billboard 200 at No. 3 after selling nearly 48,000 equivalent album units earned; of that sum, album sales comprise 45,000, SEA units comprise 3,000 (equaling 3.6 million on-demand streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.

“The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!” earned Megadeth their eighth top 10-charting album in the region in the past 30 years; their previous entries include "Countdown To Extinction" (No. 2, 1992), “Youthanasia” (No. 4, 1994), “Cryptic Writings” (No. 10, 1997), “United Abominations” (No. 8, 2007), “Endgame” (No. 9, 2009), “Super Collider” (No. 6, 2013), and “Dystopia” (No. 3, 2016).

The 2022 album sees founder Dave Mustaine working alongside co-producer Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Parkway Drive), who together oversaw 2016’s “Dystopia”; the set was recorded at the rocker’s home studio in Nashville, TN.

Megadeth are currently playing dates in support of the album on a US tour with Five Finger Death Punch, with the series set to wrap up next month in Salt Lake City, UT.

Megadeth are debuting a video for the title track to their newly-released album, “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”

The clip follows “We’ll Be Back” and “Night Stalkers” as the third and latest video installment from the band’s multi-part short film about the origins of the group's mascot Vic Rattlehead.

Megadeth’s sixteenth studio album sees founder Dave Mustaine working alongside co-producer Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Parkway Drive), who together oversaw 2016’s “Dystopia.”

The 2022 project was recorded at the rocker’s home studio in Nashville, TN with guitarist Kiko Loureiro and drummer Dirk Verbeuren; bassist Steve DiGiorgio temporarily stepped in to record tracks on the project, with the live lineup now featuring Megadeth-alumni James LoMenzo as the permanent bass player.

“The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!” is now available on CD, vinyl, and cassette, as well as digitally through all online partners; other options include a limited deluxe edition 2LP, 12-track album pressed on 180g black vinyl, housed in a numbered gatefold jacket with a 12x24 lyrics/credits insert, a lenticular vinyl lithograph and a bonus 7" featuring "We’ll Be Back" and the unreleased b-side "The Conjuring" (Live).'

Megadeth are currently playing dates in support of the album on a US tour with Five Finger Death Punch.

Megadeth stream new track Solider On!

Megadeth are streaming a visualizer for “Soldier On!” as the latest preview to their forthcoming album, “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”

“Coming to the realization that you need to walk away from a relationship that’s very toxic, and how hard it can be to start down that road,” says Dave Mustaine about the song. “But you know you need to, and just taking that first step is the hardest part. Whatever your leaving does to them, you have to block that part out, stay the course and do what’s right for you. It will be hard in the beginning, but you have got to live for yourself to be worth a damn to anyone else. You’ve got to Soldier On!”

Due September 2, the band’s sixteenth studio album sees Mustaine working alongside co-producer Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Parkway Drive), who together oversaw 2016’s “Dystopia.”
