Pink Floyd share alternate video version of Arnold Layne

Pink Floyd are sharing an alternate video version for their debut 1967 single, “Arnold Layne.”

Directed by Derek Nice, the original clip saw the band members hanging out with a mannequin on the beach in East Wittering, West Sussex in February; a second version – which features the only known footage of Syd Barrett lip-synching to the song – was filmed at Hampstead Heath and St. Michael’s Church in Highgate, London about two months later.

hennemusic has included BOTH versions of the video for fans to enjoy.

“Arnold Layne” – which details the story of a transvestite who steals women’s clothes from washing lines – reached No. 20 on the UK singles charts while the band were recording their debut album, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.”

Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall Of Fame in 2005, Pink Floyd released their final album, “The Endless River”, in 2014.

Pink Floyd recently swept top honors in the 2020 hennemusic Rock News Awards, where they captured the titles of Rock News Artist Of The Year and Rock News Story Of The Year in the 11th annual event.

Pink Floyd stream Syd Barrett Tribute Concert performance of Arnold Layne

Pink Floyd are streaming video of a 2007 Syd Barrett Tribute Concert performance of the band’s first single, “Arnold Layne”, in sync with the release of a live recording of the song for Record Store Day on August 29.

The limited-edition, one-sided Record Store Day 7” vinyl represents the last live performance of Pink Floyd with David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright all together in 2007.

This special performance of "Arnold Layne" took place at the Syd Barrett Tribute Concert - ‘The Madcap’s Last Laugh’ (produced by Nick Laird-Clowes with Associate Producer Joe Boyd) held at The Barbican on May 10, 2007; the Pink Floyd members were augmented by Jon Carin on keyboards and vocals and Andy Bell from Oasis on bass guitar.

After a star-studded line-up throughout the evening, Pink Floyd took to the stage for an incredibly emotional finale.

The concert was held to pay homage to Barrett, who had died a year earlier and sadly became the final performance of the band to include Richard Wright, who passed away the year after.

Formed in London in 1965, Pink Floyd went on to sell more than 250 million albums worldwide, with 1973’s “The Dark Side Of The Moon” among the best-selling records of all time at 45 million copies, while 1979’s “The Wall” sold more than 30 million sets.

Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall Of Fame in 2005, Pink Floyd released their final album, “The Endless River”, in 2014.

Pink Floyd launch daily playlist with rare 1974 live recording

Pink Floyd launched a new “daily evolving playlist” feature on May 22 with audio of a rare, 1974 performance of “The Dark Side Of The Moon” classic, “Us & Them.”

The band were captured live during a four-night stand at The Empire Pool (later known as Wembley Arena) in London in November 1974 during a five-week UK tour; it was first released as part of the group’s 2011 “Immersion” series.

Entitled “Syd, Roger, Richard, Nick and David – An Evolving Pink Floyd Playlist”, the feature will see the band add a new song from their catalogue to the playlist via Spotify and other streaming outlets each day – from the best known classics to deeper album tracks.

Each Friday, as a bonus, Pink Floyd will add one of the currently unavailable bonus tracks that were featured in the “Immersion” boxsets a few years back.

“During this period of lockdown, isolation and uncertainty,” says Pink Floyd, “it might help to make time each day to immerse yourself in music; each day, this will build into the perfect playlist to help you navigate these challenging times.

“We hope you enjoy reconnecting with these tracks over the coming weeks, and would love to hear your suggestions for what you think could be added to the playlist…”

Last month, Pink Floyd delivered a four-part, limited edition series of streaming concerts that included video performances from 1994, 1972, 1970 and a 2015 solo show by David Gilmour.

Pink Floyd detail A Saucerful Of Secrets reissue for Record Store Day

Pink Floyd have announced plans to reissue their 1968 album, “A Saucerful Of Secrets”, on vinyl as part of Record Store Day 2019 on Saturday, April 13.

Remastered from the original analog mono mix, the limited-edition set will be delivered on premium 12” 180-gram black vinyl, with a black poly-lined inner sleeve, and a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve, including the ‘Columbia’ logo, under which imprint (via EMI) the early Pink Floyd released in the UK.

Recorded between May 1967 and May 1968, “A Saucerful Of Secrets” was a transitional, second album by the band; during this period, the group added guitarist David Gilmour to the lineup in an effort to stabilize things as Syd Barrett’s alleged drug-fueled and mental health behaviour continued to spin out of control during rehearsals, live shows and media interviews.

After Barrett failed to appear during a series of January 1968 sessions, Pink Floyd continued the project and concert appearances without him; following meetings in March, the co-founder agreed to leave and the band officially announced his departure on April 6, 1968.

The cover artwork for “A Saucerful Of Secrets” was the first-ever sleeve design for creators Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson of the Hipgnosis design team, and was to lead to a ground-breaking career for them in the visual arts, including many more iconic Pink Floyd album sleeves, amongst them 1973’s “The Dark Side Of The Moon” and 1975’s “Wish You Were Here.”

While the project reached No. 9 on the UK charts, it remains the band’s only record to fail to appear on the US charts during its original run.

The 2019 mono reissue follows the successful release of Pink Floyd’s debut album, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn”, as part of Record Store Day 2018.

Pearl Jam have been selected as the official Record Store Day Ambassadors for 2019; held the third Saturday of every April, the annual event is a celebration of the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally.

David Gilmour is streaming a video preview of an upcoming auction in New York where the Pink Floyd legend will sell off more than 120 guitars from his personal collection.

Christie's auctioneers will host the June 20 event, which will focus on a selection of Gilmour’s preferred Fender Broadcasters, Esquires, Telecasters and Stratocasters.

Not only the largest and most comprehensive sale of guitars ever offered at auction, the collection details the musical history of one of the world’s most influential guitarists and the iconic Fender Stratocaster the rocker played on classic 1970 Pink Floyd albums “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, “Wish You Were Here”, “Animals” and “The Wall.”

All proceeds from the Christie’s auction will benefit charitable causes.

"These guitars have been very good to me and many of them have given me pieces of music over the years,” Gilmour explains. “They have paid for themselves many times over, but it's now time that they moved on. Guitars were made to be played and it is my wish that wherever they end up, they continue to give their owners the gift of music.

“By auctioning these guitars, I hope that I can give some help where it is really needed and through my charitable foundation do some good in this world. It will be a wrench to see them go and perhaps one day I'll have to track one or two of them down and buy them back!"

A global tour of the collection will launch in London at Christie's, King Street, from March 27-31, where the full collection will be on display, followed by highlights in Los Angeles from May 7-11, and then the New York sale preview ahead of the auction from June 14-19.

Pink Floyd are streaming a 1968 performance of their 1966 classic, “Interstellar Overdrive”, as the latest entry in their ongoing vintage video series.

The footage captures the band’s May 6, 1968 appearance at the Rome Pop Festival.

Written as an improvised track by all four members of the group, “Interstellar Overdrive” appeared on Pink Floyd’s 1967 debut, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” – the set reached No. 6 on the UK charts and No. 131 on the US Billboard 200 upon its original release while going on to be hailed as one of the greatest psychedelic albums of all time.

“Interstellar Overdrive” often opened the band’s shows in the mid-to-late 1960s, but disappeared from the lineup for concerts after 1971.

Drummer Nick Mason opened his 2018 live dates with the tune, and fans will be able to hear it and more songs from the project this spring when Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets perform vintage material by the group on a spring tour of North America that will begin in Vancouver, BC on March 12.

Pink Floyd are streaming rare video of a 1968 UK TV performance of “Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun”, a track from their second album, “A Saucerful Of Secrets.”

Featuring new addition David Gilmour on guitar – in place of band co-founder Syd Barrett, who had recently been dismissed from the lineup – the band filmed the song in late March of 1968 for inclusion in the BBC documentary, “All My Loving.”

Directed by Tony Palmer, the project presented a look at the pop music scene of the day and included music and interviews with The Beatles, The Who, Frank Zappa, Cream and Eric Burdon, among others.

The group’s transitional record from the original Barrett-led era to the Gilmour years reached No. 9 on the UK charts, with drummer Nick Mason later declaring it his favorite Pink Floyd album.

The rocker recently returned to live performances with Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, with a lineup that strictly performs material from the group’s pre-“The Dark Side Of The Moon” era.

Mason and his band will launch a spring tour of North America in Vancouver, BC on March 12.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason receives UK honors

Pink Floyd founding member and drummer Nick Mason has been honored in his native UK for services to music.

“Many congratulations to Nick Mason for being awarded Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the British New Year's Honors list, which has just been announced,” says Pink Floyd. “Nick will receive the award for services to music.”

As the lone Pink Floyd member to appear on all of the legendary band’s albums, the rocker returned to live performances in 2018 with Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, featuring a lineup that strictly performs material from the group’s pre-“The Dark Side Of The Moon” era.

“With the help of some like-minded friends, I have embarked on a voyage of discovery of the music that was the launchpad of Pink Floyd and my working life,” explains Mason. “It seems too early to retire, and I missed the interaction with other musicians.”

Mason and his band will next be seen on a spring 2019 tour of North America that will begin in Vancouver, BC on March 12; the series will be followed by a brief UK run that includes two nights at London’s Roundhouse in May.

Rock News Story Of The Year No. 1: PINK FLOYD


In October, Pink Floyd continued an extensive vintage video series by streaming a rare clip for “Chapter 24”, a track from the band’s 1967 debut album, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.”

The video mixes footage of songwriter Syd Barrett wandering around Gog Magog Hills in Cambridgeshire, UK in 1966 and the band outside EMI Studios, London during sessions for the project in April 1967.

Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking first record introduced the group beyond the UK underground scene while being hailed as one of the greatest psychedelic albums of all time.

Rock News Artist Of The Year No. 2 – PINK FLOYD


For a band that released their final album in 2014, Pink Floyd maintained a steady media profile throughout 2018 thanks to a number of reissues, an online vintage video series and a return to live performances by drummer Nick Mason.

David Gilmour’s 2017 concert film, “Live At Pompeii”, was awarded a Silver Medal at this year's Event Cinema Association Awards in London in February; the project had worldwide admissions of nearly 400,000.

The iconic UK outfit delivered multiple vinyl reissues in the spring, including: a newly-remastered mono version of their 1967 debut album, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn”; the 1995 live package, “Pulse”; and, their 1971 compilation, “Relics.”

In April, Nick Mason announced his return to the stage for the first time since Pink Floyd’s appearance at the 2005 Live 8 concert in London; Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets – named after the group’s second album – would exclusively perform pre-“The Dark Side Of The Moon” material during four intimate London concerts in May.

Following the creative and commercial success of his live return, Mason extended his plans by announcing a month-long fall tour of the UK and Europe would begin in September.

Roger Waters was presented with the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Award at the 2018 O2 Silver Clef Awards in London in early July; the bassist spent most of 2018 on the road with the second and final year of his global “Us + Them” tour.

An ongoing vintage video series through Pink Floyd’s YouTube channel continued throughout the year – including their first official clip with new guitarist David Gilmour – as the band streamed rare footage of classic songs and media appearances from their extensive catalog, with a particular emphasis this year on material from the 1960s.

The group continued their reissues series in the fall with the release of the vinyl debut of their 2011 compilation, “A Foot In The Door: The Very Best Of Pink Floyd.”

Just ahead of his fall tour, Mason released a box set collection of his solo albums, “Unattended Luggage”, in late August; the limited-edition offering compiles the rocker’s 1981 release, “Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports”, 1985’s “Profiles” and 1987’s “White Of The Eye” soundtrack in both 3CD and 3LP vinyl packages for the first time in over 20 years.

As the fall live series wrapped up, Mason detailed dates for a 2019 UK tour and, later, plans for a spring 2019 trek across North America.

Pink Floyd are streaming video of a live performance of their classic instrumental, “Interstellar Overdrive”, from a 1967 concert at London’s famed Roundhouse.

Written as an improvised track by all four members of the group, the song appeared on their 1967 debut, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.”

The Roundhouse was one of a number of venues on a London underground music scene that embraced Pink Floyd in their formative years, as the band enhanced their live appearances with slide shows, visual and sound effects, and audio presentation via quadraphonic speaker systems.

While “Interstellar Overdrive” often opened the group’s shows in the mid-to-late 1960s, it disappeared from the lineup for concerts after 1971.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will perform a pair of shows at the Roundhouse on a spring 2019 UK tour.

Along with his band, Saucerful Of Secrets, Mason will deliver a spring series of five dates that will begin in Cardiff next April and end with two nights at The Roundhouse in London in early May.

Ahead of the UK series, Mason and company will be seen across North America on a five-week trek that will begin in Vancouver, BC on March 12.

Written by Barrett and filmed in December of 1967, the tune was the singer’s sole compositional contribution to the project, as well as his last song published by the group before his departure a few months later as David Gilmour joined the lineup.

The group’s transitional record from the original Barrett-led era to the Gilmour years reached No. 9 on the UK charts, with drummer Nick Mason later declaring it his favorite Pink Floyd album.

Clips for the instrumental “Pow R Toc H” and the space-themed “Astronomy Domine” have resurfaced for fans to watch as part of the group’s ongoing vintage video series.

Accompanying the tunes is interview footage of Barrett and bassist Roger Waters on the BBC program “The Look.”

Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking first record introduced the group beyond the UK underground scene while being hailed as one of the greatest psychedelic albums of all time.

“Piper” reached No. 6 on the UK charts and No. 131 on the US Billboard 200 upon its original release.

Fans will be able to hear some of the songs from the debut next spring when Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will perform vintage material by the group on a spring 2019 tour of North America.

The 5-week spring series will hit most US major cities after it opens in Vancouver, BC on March 12.

Pink Floyd are streaming rare video of a 1967 recording session for their classic instrumental, “Interstellar Overdrive.”

The footage also includes drummer Nick Mason working on his “Nick’s Boogie”, with both tracks originally recorded for Peter Lorrimer Whitehead's film and companion soundtrack, “Tonite Lets All Make Love In London.”

“Interstellar” went on to be featured on the UK band’s 1967 debut album, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.”

Recorded with Pink Floyd’s original lineup of Mason, Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, the set reached No. 6 on the UK charts and No. 131 on the US Billboard 200 upon its original release while going on to be hailed as one of the greatest psychedelic albums of all time.

Barrett’s influence on the band’s early material helped define their sound as they performed on the underground UK scene; a year later, the rocker was removed from the group during sessions for 1968’s “A Saucerful Of Secrets” after the effects of his drug-influenced behaviour proved him too unreliable for live performances at the time.

Prior to Syd’s exit, guitarist and Barrett friend David Gilmour was added to the lineup, which made Pink Floyd a five-piece band for a short period in early 1968.

Pink Floyd stream rare 1967 video

Pink Floyd are streaming a rare video for “Chapter 24”, a track from the band’s 1967 debut album, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.”

The clip mixes footage of songwriter Syd Barrett wandering around Gog Magog Hills in Cambridgeshire, UK in 1966 and Pink Floyd outside EMI Studios, London during sessions for the project in April 1967.

Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking first record introduced the group beyond the UK underground scene while being hailed as one of the greatest psychedelic albums of all time.

“Piper” reached No. 6 on the UK charts and No. 131 on the US Billboard 200 upon its original release.

Fans will be able to hear some of the songs from the debut next spring when Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will perform vintage material by the group on a spring 2019 UK tour.

Fresh off a recently-completed fall trek with his band, Saucerful Of Secrets, Mason has announced a spring series of five UK dates that will begin in Cardiff next April and end with two nights at The Roundhouse in London.

“This is a unique opportunity to experience Pink Floyd’s celebrated and significant early body of work played live including songs from albums The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and A Saucerful Of Secrets,” said the group in a released statement ahead of a spring 2018 UK club tour. “Very few bands are as culturally important as Pink Floyd. They are one of the best-selling music artists of all time and Nick Mason is a founder and the only constant member of the band performing on all of their albums as well as all of their live shows.”

Mason and Pink Floyd released their final album, “The Endless River”, in 2014.

Pink Floyd stream first official video with David Gilmour

Pink Floyd are streaming a video for the 1967 song, “Paintbox”, their first official clip featuring then-new guitarist David Gilmour.

Written and sung by keyboardist Richard Wright, the band were filmed miming the b-side to the non-album single, “Apples And Oranges”, in early 1968 on a bridge in Brussels for broadcast by Belgian television.

Although Syd Barrett was still a member of Pink Floyd when the song was recorded in the fall of 1967, the “Paintbox” video was shot after his departure and features his longtime friend and replacement, Gilmour, on guitar.

While “Paintbox” has appeared on various reissue projects through the years, it was included in the 2016 package, “The Early Years 1965–1972.”

The set presents 7 individual book-style packages and feature 130 tracks, including TV recordings, BBC Sessions, outtakes and demos and more than 20 unreleased songs; also featured are 7 hours of previously unreleased live audio and more than 5 hours of rare concert footage.

Each individual book-style package was released separately early in 2017, except “Bonus Continu/ation”, which is exclusive to the box set.

Pink Floyd released their final album, “The Endless River”, in 2014.

Pink Floyd stream rare 1967 Apples And Oranges video

Pink Floyd are streaming a rare video for their 1967 single, “Apples And Oranges.”

The band’s third UK release was the final song written by co-founder Syd Barrett with the group before he was replaced by longtime friend David Gilmour.

Filmed in a Belgium fruit market, the clip sees bassist Roger Waters lip-synching to the non-album track, which was included in the 2016 package, "The Early Years 1965–1972."

The set – which gives fans the opportunity to hear the evolution of the band in their groundbreaking formative era – presents 7 individual book-style packages and feature 130 tracks, including TV recordings, BBC Sessions, outtakes and demos and more than 20 unreleased songs; also featured are 7 hours of previously unreleased live audio and more than 5 hours of rare concert footage.

Each individual book-style package was released separately early in 2017, except “Bonus Continu/ation”, which is exclusive to the box set.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will perform vintage material by the legendary UK band on a fall tour of the UK and Europe.

The month-long run, which will begin in Stockholm, Sweden on September 2, follows a series of four London club shows this past spring that saw Mason present material from six of Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking first seven albums – from their 1967 debut, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” to 1972’s “Obscured By Clouds.”

The rare club appearances marked Mason’s first live musical outing since Pink Floyd played at the 2005 Live 8 concert in London.

Pink Floyd to release 27-disc Early Years box set

Pink Floyd will release a comprehensive 27-disc box set this fall covering the first seven years of the band’s legendary history.

Due November 11, “The Early Years 1965-1972” will present 7 individual book-style packages and feature 130 tracks, accounting for more than 12 hours of music and 15 hours of video.

The package will contain TV recordings, BBC Sessions, outtakes and demos and more than 20 unreleased songs – including 7 hours of previously unreleased live audio and more than 5 hours of rare concert footage.

Pink Floyd were formed when the founding trio of bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Rick Wright were augmented by original guitarist Syd Barrett. David Gilmour joined the band shortly before Barrett’s departure in early 1968.

“The Early Years 1965-1972” will give collectors the opportunity to hear the evolution of the band and witness their part in cultural revolutions from their earliest recordings and studio sessions to the years prior to the release of “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

In addition to the deluxe set, a 2-CD highlights album, “The Early Years – Cre/ation”, will also be issued on November 11.

Each individual book-style package will be released separately early in 2017, except “Bonus Continu/ation”, which is exclusive to the box set.

Pink Floyd release EP of first recordings

Pink Floyd released a limited-edition EP of their earliest known recordings as part of Record Store Day on November 27.

“To mark 50 years since the tracks were recorded,” said the group, “Pink Floyd have released a limited edition set of two 7" singles, containing the band's first recordings.”

“Pink Floyd 1965 – Their First Recordings” features material from Syd Barrett-led lineup of Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright with help from pre-Floyd lead guitarist Rado (Bob) Klose, who together were performing under several different names in the period including the Meggadeaths, the Abdabs and the Spectrum Five before settling on the Tea Set.

Klose’s arrival in the lineup in 1964 saw Waters switch from lead guitar to bass; his departure in mid-1965 resulted in Barrett taking over lead guitar in addition to handling vocals.

Recorded in multiple sessions between late 1964 and early 1965, the set includes four songs written by Barrett (“Lucy Leave”, “Double O Bo”, “Remember Me” and “Butterfly”), coupled with Waters' “Walk With Me Sydney” – with Wright’s first wife Juliette Gale on backing vocals on the track – and a cover of Slim Harpo’s “I'm A King Bee.”

Audio for the release was mastered from the original mono analogue tapes by Andy Jackson of Tube Mastering and Ray Staff of AIR Studios.

With just 1,000 copies of the EP released, the band says they "hope to make them available in some physical form towards the end of next year."

Rolling Stone speculates the songs may have been released before the 50-year copyright on them was in danger of expiring due to the United Kingdom's copyright laws, which would see the material enter public domain if the copyright hadn’t been extended with a reissue.
