Thin Lizzy: Repaired Phil Lynott statue to return to Dublin

Dublin: Phil Lynott statue with damage - May 2013

A statue of the late Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott, damaged by vandals in May, is set to return to the streets of Dublin.

The Journal reports work is underway on a new reinforced plinth for the statue, with plans to reinstall the landmark piece the weekend after next, ahead of an unveiling ceremony the following Tuesday, on the 64th anniversary of the Thin Lizzy frontman’s birth.

Two men turned themselves into police at Pearse Street Station the day after the incident, which happened in the early hours of the morning on May 10, and officers said they weren’t seeking anyone else in connection the case.

The monument was seriously damaged after it was pushed over, with its bronze coat suffering a tear in the fall, and repairs are now nearing completion.

Council workers are planning to drill-down deep into the pavement outside Bruxelles Bar to insert a large medal rod, making it impossible for anyone to push the statue over in future.

“It seems now that it was just a bunch of high spirited boys, who meant no harm,” Lynott’s mother Philomena told Hot Press at the time. “So I am not annoyed with them. I’m only hoping that none of the lads got hurt.”

Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in 1970 and led them to international success with albums like “Jailbreak,” “Johnny The Fox” and “Bad Reputation”. Years of drug and alcohol dependency led to his collapse on Christmas Day 1985; he died of pneumonia and heart failure due to sepsis on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.

Various versions of Thin Lizzy have reformed for periods of time since Lynott’s passing; the most recent incarnation, led by guitarist Scott Gorham, recently rebranded themselves as Black Star Riders – they released their debut album under the new name in May.
