Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” and John Lennon’s “Imagine” are among 25 sound recordings newly-selected for induction into the US Library Of Congress National Recording Registry.
Under the terms of the National Recording Preservation Act of 2000, the Librarian – with advice from the Library's National Recording Preservation Board (NRPB) – annually selects 25 recordings that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and are at least 10 years old.
Recordings from 1908 to 2012 are featured in the new series of inductions, including Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s 1970 album, “Déjà Vu”, “Synchronicity” by The Police, the Eurythmics’ 1983 hit, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, and records by John Denver, Jimmy Buffett, and Madonna, among others.
The 2023 inductions bring the number of titles on the registry to 625, representing a small portion of the national library’s vast recorded sound collection of nearly 4 million items.
The epic “Stairway To Heaven” was featured on the UK band’s 1971 untitled fourth record, which went on to be referenced as “Led Zeppelin IV” and become one of the best-selling albums of all time.
“The idea of ‘Stairway,’”Jimmy Pagetold the BBC in 2014, “was to have a piece of music, a composition, whereby it would just keep unfolding into more layers and more moods. The whole subtlety and intensity of the overlay would actually accelerate as it went through every level – every emotional level, every musical level. And so it keeps opening up, as it continues through these patterns.”
Lennon recorded “Imagine” for his 1971 self-titled album; it became the best-selling single of his solo-career and one of the world’s most-covered songs.
The Rolling Stones have recorded a song with Paul McCartney for the band’s next studio album.
CNN reports that a representative for the Stones confirmed via email that McCartney plays bass “on just one RS track.”
Denying press reports that the collaboration also includes the Beatles’ other surviving member, the spokesman said the recording featured “no Ringo Starr at all.”
More details about the project were made public by Rolling Stone, who reports the band have spent the past several weeks recording new music in Los Angeles with producer Andrew Watt (Post Malone, Ozzy Osbourne, Miley Cyrus, among many others), and the project is nearing the mixing phase.
“We do have a lot of stuff of Charlie Watts still in the can,” explained the guitarist last spring. “We were halfway through making an album when he died… Of course, if we want to carry on recording, we’re gonna need drums, and it’s gonna be Steve Jordan.”
The project would mark the follow-up to the Stones’ most recent album of originals, 2005’s “A Bigger Bang”, and the 2016 covers collection, “Blue & Lonseome.”
The Rolling Stones just released a new package, “GRRR Live!”, which delivers the group’s 2012 show at Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center that was originally broadcast via pay-per-view as part of the 50 & Counting Tour.

Dave Grohl jammed with Paul McCartney during his headlining set at the UK’s Glastonbury Festival on June 25.
Delivering his first live appearance since the March 25 passing of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins while on tour in South America, Grohl arrived at center stage to join McCartney for his 1973 classic, “Band On The Run”; video footage of the song is being shared by the BBC.
As the Foo leader exited, Bruce Springsteen arrived to perform his 1984 hit, “Glory Days”, and a cover of The Beatles classic, “I Wanna Be Your Man” – reprising the pair of songs the two performed during McCartney’s June 16 show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Grohl and Springsteen returned at the end of the evening to help out on the night’s final encore – a performance of The Beatles’ “The End.”
An all-star lineup will honor the late Foo Fighters rocker during a pair of Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts this fall, including a September 3 show at London’s Wembley Stadium and a September 27 event at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Bruce Springsteen joined Paul McCartney onstage during his June 16 concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
As Rolling Stone notes, Springsteen took the mic for a rendition of his 1984 hit, “Glory Days”, and the Beatles’ classic, “I Wanna Be Your Man.”
Later in the evening, Jon Bon Jovi appeared to sing “Happy Birthday” to McCartney, who turns 80 on June 18.
Springsteen returned for the show’s encore – a performance of the Beatles’ “The End”, which closed out the event and the final show of McCartney’s North American spring tour.
Springsteen was last seen at the same venue in his home state on June 5 when he joined Coldplay for a pair of his songs during the second show of the band’s two-night stand there.
Springsteen will return to the road with the E Street Band next February for a series of to-be-announced US arena dates, while he has already revealed the schedule for summer 2023 shows in Europe.
The Rolling Stones paid tribute to The Beatles during a June 9 concert at Anfield Stadium in the band’s hometown of Liverpool, UK.
“We had decided to rehearse a special version of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,'”Mick Jagger told the crowd, referencing the 1960s hit by Gerry And The Pacemakers that serves as the anthem of local soccer team Liverpool FC, who play at Anfield, “but we decided instead to do a cover song written by other local lads, so we’ll do this especially for you.”
The Stones then launched into their version of the John Lennon-Paul McCartney song, “I Wanna Be Your Man”, for the first time in a decade.
Lennon-McCartney originally gave the song to the Stones in 1963 – who released it as their second single and went on to have a Top 15 UK hit with it – before The Beatles issued their own recording of the track on their second album, “With The Beatles.”
The Liverpool event marked the third date of the Stones’ 60th anniversary tour, following shows in Madrid, Spain and Munich, Germany.
“From Liverpool with love!,” shared the Stones on social media after the concert. “It was great to see you all tonight.”
The 2022 tour will continue with a June 13 appearance in Amsterdam.
The Beatles will screen their legendary 1969 rooftop concert – as featured in the new docuseries “Get Back” – in IMAX as part of an exclusive event on January 30.

Paul McCartney will induct the Foo Fighters into Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame during the 36th annual Induction event on October 30.
McCartney met Dave Grohl in 2002 and the pair have gone on to become friends, according to the Foos frontman, who recently shared a story with UK television host Graham Norton about the time The Beatle and his wife stopped by his house for a visit while in Los Angeles.
“We have wine and pizza and we were hanging out, and it was time for Paul to go,” recounted Grohl on The Graham Norton Show. “Paul and [his wife] Nancy were leaving and there was a piano in the corner of the room, and he just can’t help himself. So he sits down at the piano and starts playing ‘Lady Madonna’… In my f**king house! My mind is blown, I can’t believe this is happening. This is like the most crazy full-circle moment of my entire life.
“My daughter Harper, who I think was five at the time, is watching Paul McCartney on the piano and she goes to the kitchen and gets a coffee cup, puts some change in it and puts it on top of the piano like it’s a tip jar,” he continued. “She’d never taken a lesson to play any instrument at that point and she sat down and watched his hands. They sat together, and he was showing her what to play, and they wrote a song together.”
When he woke up the next day, Grohl said he heard Harper playing “the song they’d written the night before.”
In 2012, McCartney performed the track, “Give Me Some Slack”, with the surviving members of Nirvana at the 12-12-12 benefit concert in New York City and, once again, days later during an appearance on Saturday Night Live; a studio version was released and included on the soundtrack to Grohl’s 2013 documentary, “Sound City.”
The Rock Hall has announced some of the other presenters for the 201 event: Angela Bassett will welcome Tina Turner; Taylor Swift will recognize Carole King; Drew Barrymore will introduce The Go-Go’s; and, Lionel Richie will induct Clarence Avant for the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
Organizers have yet to announce who will induct Jay-Z, Todd Rundgren, Kraftwerk, Charley Patton, Gil Scott-Heron, Billy Preston or Randy Rhoads.
The 36th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 30 at 8 p.m. ET at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio with a radio simulcast on SiriusXM’s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Radio channel 310; the Induction Ceremony will air at a later date on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
Peter Frampton is streaming video of his cover of George Harrison’s 1970 classic, “Isn’t It A Pity”, as the latest preview to his forthcoming instrumental album, “Frampton Forgets The Words.”
The guitarist says the track from Harrison's “All Things Must Pass” album “was the track I could hear playing when I first arrived at Abbey Road to record. We have all been in the same boat for over a year now. Our video lets you into my world of lockdown and possibly yours too. I think we can all relate.”
Harrison included the song on his triple-album package after it had been rejected years earlier by The Beatles; it featured Ringo Starr on drums and was issued as the b-side to the set’s lead single, “My Sweet Lord”, going on become a hit of its own in some countries.
Due April 23, “Frampton Forgets The Words” features some of the rocker’s favorite material.
The project has been previewed with Frampton’s versions of Radiohead’s 2007 single, “Reckoner”, the 1982 Roxy Music classic, “Avalon”, and David Bowie’s 1984 track, “Loving The Alien.”

The Black Crowes are sharing their version of the John Lennon classic, “Jealous Guy”, as featured on the upcoming series of expanded 30th anniversary editions of their 1990 debut, “Shake Your Money Maker.”
The tune, which first appeared on Lennon’s legendary 1971 album “Imagine”, is among the previously-unreleased material from sessions for the group’s first record that will be featured on the February 26 package.
The reissue has been expanded into multiple packages, including 4LP and 3CD Super Deluxe versions that include a remastered version of the original album; three never-before-heard studio recordings; 2 unreleased demos from the band’s early incarnation as Mr. Crowe’s Garden; B-sides and an unreleased 1990 concert recording in their hometown of Atlanta, GA.
A 2CD Deluxe version has the remastered album along with the unreleased studio songs, demos, and b-sides; there are also standard 1CD and 1LP versions with the remastered record, as well as streaming and digital options.
Chris Cornell’s team are streaming a lyric video for the singer’s cover of the classic 1980 John Lennon hit, “Watching The Wheels.”
The late Soundgarden singer’s version of the third single from Lennon’s “Double Fantasy” record is featured on the newly-released collection, “No One Sings Like You Anymore.”
The project delivers Cornell’s take on songs by Harry Nilsson, Ghostland Observatory, Electric Light Orchestra, Carl Hall and others alongside a new studio recording of the Prince-written "Nothing Compares 2 U"; Chris' cover of Guns N' Roses"Patience," which was released on his birthday this year and earned him his first solo Billboard No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, is also included.
All instruments on the album were played by Cornell and producer Brendan O'Brien.
“No One Sings Like You Anymore” is now available in digital formats and will see a physical release on March 19.
Director Peter Jackson has released an exclusive sneak peek of his upcoming documentary, “The Beatles: Get Back.”
Shot in January 1969 and compiled from over 60 hours of unseen footage (filmed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg) and more than 150 hours of unheard audio, all of which has been restored, “The Beatles: Get Back” is the story of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they plan their first live show in over two years and charts the writing and rehearsing of 14 new songs, originally intended for release on an accompanying live album.
The film features for the first time in its entirety, The Beatles' last live performance as a group – a rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row – as well as other songs featured on the band’s final two albums, “Abbey Road” and “Let It Be.”
The preview delivers a montage of footage from the project, which is scheduled to debut in cinemas on August 27, 2021

The Beatles will release a new vinyl box set, “The Singles Collection”, on November 22.
From 1962 to 1970, The Beatles released 22 UK singles; of those 44 A and B-side tracks, 29 were not included on the group’s British albums at that time.
These singles, plus an exclusive new double A-side single for the mid-1990s-issued tracks “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love,” are newly cut for vinyl from their original mono and stereo master tapes by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios for a new limited edition package.
“The Beatles: The Singles Collection” presents 46 tracks on 23 180-gram seven-inch vinyl singles in faithfully reproduced international picture sleeves – from the band’s star-making 1962 debut single, “Love Me Do” with its B-side “P.S. I Love You”, to their 1970 finale of “Let It Be” / “You Know My Name (Look Up The Number).”
The records are accompanied by a 40-page booklet with photos, ephemera, and detailed essays by Beatles historian Kevin Howlett.

The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” has returned to the US Top 10 for the first time in five decades.
According to Billboard, a series of 50th anniversary reissues has pushed the project from No. 71 to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 after selling 81,000 equivalent album units and earning an 803% increase over the previous sales window.
“Abbey Road” spent 11 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in late 1969 and early 1970, and last appeared in the US Top 10 on April 25, 1970.
The 2019 reissues deliver a new mix of the full original record by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell alongside 23 session recordings and demos, most of which have not been previously available.
The US chart news follows headlines from the UK, where “Abbey Road” made chart history when it landed at No. 1 and set a new Guinness Book Of World Record for the longest time for an album to do so in the country at 49 years and 252 days.

Steven Tyler joined Paul McCartney for a performance of The Beatles classic, “Helter Skelter”, during a June 28 show at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
“Need I say more?” posted the Aerosmith rocker on social media alongside video of his guest appearance during the first of two weekend concerts by McCartney at the venue.
The Boston band teamed up with producer Giles Martin – known for creating the soundscape for "The Beatles Love" by Cirque du Soleil show – for the series, which is billed as “one of the most immersive, state-of-the art audio and video technology experiences in Las Vegas.”
In sync with the latest run of dates, Aerosmithrecently opened their own museum to showcase items they’ve collected over their nearly 50 years together.
The exhibit presents a living timeline of the group’s career, featuring everything from Tyler’s high school drum set and an array of his signature scarfs to the band’s first press kit, original lyrics for “Walk This Way,” over 20 guitars played during iconic performances, and much more.
