Thin Lizzy: Repaired Phil Lynott statue returns to Dublin

A statue of the late Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott, damaged by vandals in May, returned to the streets of Dublin on Thursday.

RTE News reports an official unveiling took place which featured special guest Philomena Lynott, the rocker’s mother.

The 2.4m bronze sculpture was knocked from its plinth and damaged by two men in May, who later presented themselves to local police in relation to the incident.

The €4,000 bill to repair the statue was footed by a third party on behalf of the men.

"This weekend is his birthday weekend and there's concerts being held all over the place in memory of him,” said Philomena, “so I'm quite happy that they'll all see the statue back in all its glory.”

The landmark statue was erected on Harry Street, just off Grafton Street, in August 2005 to commemorate the life and work of Lynott.

Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in 1970 and led them to international success with albums like “Jailbreak,” “Johnny The Fox” and “Bad Reputation.” Years of drug and alcohol dependency led to his collapse on Christmas Day 1985; he died of pneumonia and heart failure due to sepsis on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.

Various versions of Thin Lizzy have reformed for periods of time since Lynott’s passing; the most recent incarnation, led by guitarist Scott Gorham, recently rebranded themselves as Black Star Riders – they released their debut album under the new name in May.
