Led Zeppelin: John Bonham tops Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Drummers list

John Bonham of Led Zeppelin has topped Rolling Stone magazine’s newly-published list of the “100 Greatest Drummers Of All Time.”

The late sticksman landed at No. 1 ahead of major players like Keith Moon of The Who, Cream’s Ginger Baker and Neil Peart of Rush, among others.

Rolling Stone explains that their sure-to-be-hotly-debated list of timekeepers was based on “one important caveat: we used rock and pop as our rubric, so a drummer's work needed to directly impact that world (as we define it, of course) to make the list.”

“We valued nuance and musicality over chops and flash,” they added, “celebrating players who knew the value of aiding a great song more than hogging up a show with a silly solo.”

In describing Bonham’s work, the magazine acknowledged the immediate impact he had on rock.

“On the very first cut of the very first Led Zeppelin LP, John Bonham changed rock drumming forever,” says Rolling Stone. “Years later, Jimmy Page was still amused by the disorienting impact that ‘Good Times Bad Times,’ with its jaw-dropping bass-drum hiccups, had on listeners: ‘Everyone was laying bets that Bonzo was using two bass drums, but he only had one.’ Heavy, lively, virtuosic and deliberate, that performance laid out the terrain Bonham's artful clobbering would conquer before his untimely death in 1980.

"At his most brutally paleolithic he never bludgeoned dully, at his most rhythmically dumbfounding he never stooped to unnecessary wankery, and every night on tour he dodged both pitfalls with his glorious stampede through ‘Moby Dick.’"

Bonham died at the age of 32 on September 25, 1980 of a pulmonary edema brought on by inhaling his own vomit after drinking forty shots of vodka in a twenty-four hour period as Led Zeppelin rehearsed for a tour in support of
1979’s “In Through The Out Door.”

AUDIO: Royal Blood premiere new single from HBO series Vinyl

UK rockers Royal Blood are premiering a new single, “Where Are You Now?”, ahead of its debut this weekend on HBO’s 1970s music industry drama series Vinyl.

The duo of bassist/singer Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher were reportedly inspired to write the song after seeing the first trailer for the Mick Jagger/Martin Scorsese produced program.

"Hearing Richie Finestra talk about the first time you heard a song that made your hairs on the back of your neck stand up or made you wanna dance or kick someone's arse," Kerr tells Noisey. "I just wanted to write a song that gave me that sort of buzz."

Royal Blood have been off the road since wrapping up a world tour in support of their 2014 self-titled debut album last fall.

Upon its release, the project entered the UK charts at No. 1 on its way to becoming the fastest-selling British rock debut album in the UK in three years.

The band picked up the Best British Group Award at the BRIT Awards in London in February of 2015; the honor was presented to them by fan and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

Guns N’ Roses reunion drummer mystery deepens

Guns N’ Roses are a week away from launching their reunion shows in Las Vegas, and a new series of tweets has deepened the mystery of who will be behind the drum kit for the upcoming tour.

To date, the group has only officially announced the involvement of Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan, while it is expected that guitarist Richard Fortus, keyboardist Dizzy Reed and drummer Frank Ferrer are also on board.

This week, Guns N’ Roses issued a series of tweets with images of gear representing each player’s role in the lineup, and a photo featuring Ahead brand drumsticks has raised further speculation about who will fill the drummer slot.

Hardcore GNR fans recognized Ahead drumsticks as ones previously used by Matt Sorum on the “Use Your Illusion” tour, but Sorum confirmed he now uses the Zildjian brand and longtime drummer Ferrer confirmed for inquiring fans that he now uses Vater drumsticks.

Following Sorum and Ferrer’s comments, speculation returns to the possible status of Steven Adler, who was fired from the band in 1990 over his heroin addiction.

Legendary Sunset Strip club the Whisky A Go- Go recently teased “a big announcement” regarding GNR following the cancellation of an upcoming gig by Adler.

The club tweeted: “The Steven Adler show on 4/1 has been canceled. Stay tuned for a big announcement ! #GunsNRoses.”

The April 1 date referenced by the venue lands exactly one week before the reunited band launch their 2016 tour at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV on April 8 & 9.

GNR have confirmed plans for a summer tour of North America by way of a video announcement featuring a list of the 21 cities they’ll hit along the way.

Further information regarding dates, venues and tickets will be announced soon.

Iron Maiden announce Ed Force One model plane release

Iron Maiden have teamed up with German-based model company Revell to produce a limited-edition version of the band’s plane Ed Force One.

Piloted by singer Bruce Dickinson, Ed Force One carries the band, crew and gear around the world on their current world tour in support of 2015’s “The Book Of Souls.”

“As soon as we knew that Bruce would be piloting the plane for Iron Maiden’s world tour,” says Global Merchandising Services’ licensing manager Jens Drinkwater, “we knew that we had to do something special to celebrate the occasion, and Revell are an obvious partner for this fantastic collaboration.

“Their model kits have been a synonym for plastic modelling for over 60 years, and this detailed model of Ed Force One will appeal to both traditional builders and hobbyists as well as the dedicated Iron Maiden fanbase.”

No release date has been revealed for the project, but Revell’s Thomas Randrup explains the model will appeal to both fans and collectors alike.

“Our 1:144 scale model of Ed Force One will bring something new, as well as fun to Civil Aviation Model Kit genre,” says Randrup, “and we are looking forward to a successful co-operation with Global Merchandising and Iron Maiden on this 2016 new product release.”

The real Ed Force One recently rejoined the UK band’s tour following an accident at a Santiago, Chile airport just two weeks into the trek.

The March 12 incident saw the port side engines damaged while the Beoing 747 was being towed for refueling, which required the replacement of both port side jet engines at a cost of around four million dollars each.

Iron Maiden wrapped up the South American leg of The Book Of Souls world tour last week and have returned to North America for dates starting March 30 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson reflects on 40th anniversary of 2112

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson reflects on the band’s legendary 1976 album, “2112”, as it marks its 40th anniversary on April 1.

Recorded over a two-week period with producer Terry Brown at Toronto Sound Studios, the group’s fourth studio effort proved to be a turning point in Rush’s career at a time when they needed it the most.

“The record company was concerned,” Lifeson tells Rolling Stone about the lack of commercial success following the band’s 19784 self-titled debut. “We called the tour for ‘Caress Of Steel’ the ‘Down the Tubes Tour.’ We had passes made that had that on it.

“But that experience gave us the courage to stand up to what everybody was demanding of us. I remember clearly saying, ‘OK, screw it. We're may go down in flames, but at least we know that we've done it our way.’ There's no way we're gonna remake the first record just because that's what the record company wants and they're worried about sales.”

Despite record company pressure, Lifeson explains Rush’s independence was partially aided by the terms of their contract.

“The fortunate thing is our deal at that time was a production deal,” he says. “So, really, we had full control over content, including artwork. Once we delivered it to the record company, it was theirs to work with. So we were really lucky.

“It took about a year to go gold. So it was a slow but progressive evolution. Once it got to that point where it really started to take off, there was word of mouth and more interest in the band, and all of those things came together to make a movement. That really bought our independence from the record company.”

The project showcases lyrics by drummer Neil Peart that were heavily influenced by the work of Russian author Ayn Rand, with tales of a dystopian universe set in the year 2112.

The album’s title track delivered an epic seven-part suite that remains a touchstone for progressive rock four decades later.

“I don't know if we ever considered ourselves a prog band, in the sense of King Crimson or early Genesis, although we've found those bands very influential,” says Lifeson. “We always considered ourselves a hard-rock band. We pushed ourselves to make things difficult so they'll be hard to play and keep us up to a certain standard, so in the literal sense of the word ‘prog,’ yes, I think we were quite progressive, and we'd like to think us as being such. But in terms of a genre, I don't know if we ever thought of ourselves as a progressive-rock band.”

A favourite of Rush fans and fellow musicians, the guitarist takes pride in the lasting effect “2112” has had on others and the band itself.

“I think it's one of the most important pieces of work that we've done,” Lifeson adds. “I think the influence that it had on a lot of listeners, just judging from the comments I read in the mail and even comments from other bands that have been influenced by us, that's really a signature record for all of them. And that's a wonderful thing.

“If you're going to leave something as your legacy, having something that is so influential on other people that it has improved their lives or just made them more understanding of something, I think that is the ultimate.”

Rush wrapped up their R40 Live tour last August, and have said it’s likely their last concert trek based on several factors – including Peart’s chronic tendonitis and shoulder problems.

The band are currently on a break and considering future plans, according to Lifeson.

Cheap Trick to reunite with drummer for Rock Hall induction

Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen confirms the band will reunite with estranged drummer Bun E. Carlos to perform at their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in New York next month.

Carlos left the touring lineup in 2010, was replaced by Nielsen’s son Daxx, and then found himself suing his own group for monies owed before reaching a settlement last year.

The Rockford, IL band will enter the Hall during an April 8 ceremony at New York’s Barclays Center alongside Deep Purple, Steve Miller, Chicago and N.W.A.

"He's going to play the inductions because they're inducting the people who made the records way back when, and that's good," Nielsen tells the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "He deserves it."

At the same time, the guitarist notes that Carlos "has been gone almost six years, and Daxx has been playing the whole time. He revitalized the band totally."

As for communications between Carlos and the partners in the Cheap Trick corporation, Nielsen adds, "The relationship? I guess it's good, but we never see each other.”

Ahead of the Rock Hall induction, Cheap Trick will release a new album, “Bang Zoom Crazy…Hello”, on April 1.

The project is the band's 17th studio album and their first in five years.

The record was produced by longtime associate Julian Raymond, who has co-written several Cheap Trick tunes through the years.

AC/DC: Axl Rose spotted at Atlanta rehearsal studio

As rumors swirl that Axl Rose will join AC/DC this year on tour in place of Brian Johnson, new photos of the Guns N’ Roses singer and the band leaving an Atlanta rehearsal studio have surfaced.

TMZ reports they have the first photos – taken last Friday – linking Rose with the Australian rockers; view them at tmz.com

Reports out of Atlanta first surfaced when Rose was spotted on March 18 in front of the Loews Atlanta Hotel by a fan who shared a photo of the chance meeting on Instagram.

A few days later, Atlanta Radio 100.5 DJ Jason Bailey revealed that a "very very good source" told him that Rose will join AC/DC for the remainder of their US tour after meeting with them in the city.

AC/DC postponed the remaining 10 shows on their US tour earlier this month following news that Johnson has been advised by doctors to stop touring immediately or risk total hearing loss.

On the horizon for AC/DC is a 12-date European tour, which begins May 7 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Last week, Guns N’ Roses confirmed plans for a summer tour of North America by revealing a list of 21 cities they’ll hit along the route, with dates and venues details to follow soon.

The partially reunited band will launch their 2016 dates with two sold-out shows in Las Vegas at the new T-Mobile Arena on April 8 & 9.

VIDEO: David Lee Roth explores strategy game Go on The Roth Show

David Lee Roth explores the Chinese strategy game Go, among others topics, on the latest episode of The Roth Show.

The game originated in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago, and is one of the oldest board games played today.

“Everybody in China plays it,” explains Roth, “and, if they can afford it, they get tutors to come in and teach their kids every day of the week. You play chess? It’s a little like chess but it’s about four times as big the board and about four billion times the opportunities.”

The singer’s rambling on the game in the latest Roth Show episode blurs with talk of recording studios, websites and painting.

The program also includes a snippet of an unreleased song, “Red Bull And Pop Tarts”, and ends with Roth’s cover of the 2013 Pharrell Williams hit, “Happy.”

Last year, Roth and Van Halen released their first live album together, and supported the project with a 3-month summer tour of North America.

Things have been quiet in the Van Halen camp since they closed out their 2015 tour with a pair of shows at the Hollywood Bowl in early October.

In addition to STP, other performers included Gary Wright (“Dream Weaver”), Yutong (Pacific Symphony, LA Phil, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra), Chas West (Bonham, Foreigner), Marten Andersson (Lizzy Borden, George Lynch), Monte Pittman (Madonna, Solo Artist), Stan Sharp (Long Beach Symphony, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra) and Jane Lee (accomplished pianist).

A charity auction at the event included signed items from Slash, KISS, Def Leppard, Peter Frampton, Foo Fighters, The Doors and Joe Walsh, among others.

All musicians involved with From Classic To Rock contributed their time, energy and musical talents in an effort to benefit public education by helping fund programming supported by PEF including school music, physical education, library and STEM programs, safe school counselors, academic and career counselors, and teacher salaries.

After teaming up with STP in 2013, Bennington announced his departure from the lineup last fall as he struggled to juggle his work with the group alongside his Linkin Park and personal obligations.

Earlier this month, Stone Temple Pilots closed online auditions for a new singer.

VIDEO: Metallica tune fuels Dodge Predators commercial

Metallica’s 1997 tune, “Fuel”, provides the soundtrack to a new commercial promoting Dodge’s line of performance cars.

Billed as “predators”, the automaker showcases the Challenger SRT Hellcat, Viper and Charger in the ad as they cruise the nighttime streets of Miami, FL.

“Fuel” was the third single issued from Metallica’s seventh album, “Reload.”

The song was nominated for a 1999 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance but lost out to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant’s “Walking Into Clarksdale” track, "Most High."

With 436,000 copies sold in its opening week, “Reload” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on its way to US sales of more than 4 million.

Metallica are currently in the studio working with producer Greg Fidelman on a new album.

Fidelman previously worked with the band as the recording and mixing engineer on 2008's “Death Magnetic” alongside producer Rick Rubin, and 2011’s collaboration with Lou Reed, “Lulu”, and his extensive resume includes projects with Black Sabbath, Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer and more.

VIDEO: Rolling Stones perform free concert in Cuba

The Rolling Stones performed their first-ever concert in Cuba on Friday and video from the event has surfaced.

The groundbreaking free show also marked the first open air concert in the country by a British rock band.

The “Concert For Amity” saw the group play an 18-song set before an estimated crowd of 1.3 million fans on the Caribbean island.

“Here we are finally!,” Mick Jagger told the crowd. “We are sure that this night is going to be an unforgettable night, for you and for us.

“We know that years ago it was difficult to listen to our music here in Cuba, but here we are, playing for you in your beautiful land. I think that finally things have changed, haven’t they?”

The free event was made possible by the benefaction of Fundashon Bon Intenshon on behalf of the island of Curaçao.

Fundashon Bon Intenshon initiates and supports international charitable projects in the fields of education, athletics, cultural literacy, healthcare and tourism as well as other attempts to mitigate the impact of general poverty.

The concert was filmed by director Paul Dugdale for a possible future release.

Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford and Derek St. Holmes announce US tour

Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford and longtime Ted Nugent vocalist Derek St. Holmes have announced dates for a US tour.

“We are very excited to announce the first leg of our 2016 Summer Tour supporting the legendary Whitesnake!”, says the duo.

The rockers will join Whitesnake on the band’s Greatest Hits tour for a month of shows starting June 3 at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, TX.

The run will include a pair of headlining Whitford/St. Holmes dates, including a June 22 stop in Sellersville, PA and a July 1 appearance at the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, NH.

The band’s lineup is rounded out by bassist Chopper Anderson, Tesla drummer Troy Lucketta, and keyboardist Buck Johnson.

Whitford and St. Holmes – who originally teamed up to release a self-titled album in 1981 – have recorded a follow-up called “Reunion”, with plans to release it in 2016.

"It's a classic rock album - modern classic rock," said Whitford last fall. "I mean, that's what we do. We're all rockers, and we're not gonna try and do anything else but what we know and what we love.

“I think a lot of Aerosmith fans are really going to enjoy this record because all I ever hear is, 'When you gonna do another Toys? When you gonna do another Rocks?' That's what this album is. It's very straight-ahead, stripped-down classic rock."
