Pink Floyd share a Dark Side Of The Moon classic from Pulse concert film

Pink Floyd are streaming a performance of “The Dark Side Of The Moon” classic, “Eclipse”, from their restored 1995 concert film “Pulse.”

The tune was the closing track on the iconic 1973 album, which was played in its entirety during a 1994 tour, with this footage capturing an October 20 concert in London as part of the group’s sold-out, 14-night stand at the city’s Earls Court venue.

“Pulse” topped the US Music Video sales chart upon its original release and was a top 10 set in several countries, where it went on to earn multi-platinum status.

The project was restored and re-edited in 2019 from the original tape masters for “The Later Years” box set.

Robert Plant streams unreleased track from Digging Deep collection

Robert Plant is streaming “Charlie Patton Highway (Turn it Up, Pt. 1)”, as the first preview to his forthcoming anthology, “Digging Deep: Subterranea.”

“I spent time in the hill country of north Mississippi around Como, dropping back to Clarksdale, the incredible center of black music talent over the years,” says Plant. “I weaved my car through the Delta back roads, listening to the remarkable protestations of Mississippi AM radio. I was looking at my world and my times from this unfamiliar place and found myself exposed to a nightmare world of half-truths.”

The tune – which will also appear on the upcoming Band Of Joy Volume 2 record – is one of three previously unreleased tracks in the collection, alongside "Nothing Takes The Place Of You" and a cover of rockabilly artist Charlie Feathers’ 1957 tune, "Too Much Alike”, featuring Patty Griffin.

Anthrax revisit 1990s tour with Iron Maiden

Anthrax are revisiting their early 1990s tour with Iron Maiden the third episode of a 6-part video series celebrating the forthcoming 30th anniversary edition of their 1990 album, “Persistence Of Time.”

Following appearances across Europe together in 1988-89, the New York thrash outfit joined Iron Maiden for the European and North American legs of their “No Prayer On The Road” trek in 1990-91 in support of their eighth studio album, “No Prayer For The Dying.”

“We were always big Iron Maiden fans; the two camps always got along,” says drummer Charlie Benante. “I always wanted to model Anthrax after them because I always felt that they were just so professional and they really cared about their fans and their crew; it’s a good vibe with them.

“I’ve always said that I wanted to get up and play with them,”
he continued, “and so one night I got up and played ‘Sanctuary’; I was on fire that night, I was just flyin’….at one point, I was playing and I see Bruce [Dickinson] turn around and he gives me the thumbs up…and I’m like ‘I know Iron Maiden songs, you know’.

“It was awesome to be onstage with your heroes…you feel as if your feet are not touching the floor.”

Video footage of the Anthrax/Iron Maiden performance is featured on a DVD as part of the CD edition of the “Persistence Of Time” reissue; due for release on August 21, the package will also be available on 2CD and 4LP vinyl sets.

Anthrax’s fifth album reached No. 24 on the US Billboard 200 on its way to gold status in the country.

Rik Emmett previews Triumph documentary Lay It On The Line

Rik Emmett is sharing his thoughts on the forthcoming Triumph documentary, “Lay It On The Line”, in a new interview with The Metal Voice.

Produced by Emmy and Peabody award-winning Banger Films, "Triumph: Lay It On The Line" is a Crave original that details the story of one of Canada’s biggest rock acts of the 1980s – from their humble beginnings as staples of the Toronto club circuit in the mid-'70s to selling out arenas and stadiums all across North America with their legendary live shows.

"Banger, they're very good at what they do,” says Emmett. “And they've done so many — everybody from Iron Maiden, Metallica and Rush to… They've got one that's on Netflix right now; it's a ZZ Top one. These guys are consummate pros, and they know what they're doing when they're telling a story. When somebody's digging around in your life… They come to my house and they do an interview, and then they come back a few months later and do another one, and then they come back another couple of weeks later and do another one, because they're going deep. And you're going, 'What are they gonna find? I'm a little bit concerned.'

"There's a surreal nature to it — you're going back in your life, and they're reminding you of things that you'd completely forgotten,"
he continued. "And you're going, 'Oh, yeah.' And then they're digging deeper, and they're going, 'So, when the band broke up…' And you're going, 'Okay, this hurts, actually.' I don't wanna have to go back to that, because the rise and the fall and the rise again, it's the fall that hurts. I don't wanna go there. I thought I'd put all this behind me. It was ugly, heavy baggage."

The film sees Emmett reunite with drummer Gil Moore and bassist Mike Levine to play a three-song set that marked the band’s first performance in 11 years, as well as its first as a pure three-piece power trio in 31 years.

"[Banger] did a really extraordinary thing," explains the guitarist. “I hope I'm not giving too much away here. They flew in fans from all over the world. They created an event. And the fans didn't know that we were gonna actually play three songs. So, they brought 'em all to the warehouse, and they're wandering, and they're looking at this Triumph museum-y kind of thing. They've got dummies with my old spandex jumpsuits on.

“And then they send them down and they were gonna show them a few little clips on a scrim. The scrim drops and there we are and we play. And these are the people that love us the most. And there was only a couple of hundred of 'em. But it was so intense; it was so amazing. And, of course, they've got, like, 15 cameras around the room capturing every angle of this. And then you go, 'Oh my God. This is heavy duty.'

"So it's really good,"
Rik added. "It really gets to the heart of, you're a band, you create some music, you make a connection to people, and then here's these people, you're the soundtrack to their lives, and it matters to them.”

Formed in Mississauga, ON as a four-piece outfit in 1975, it was Emmett’s addition to the lineup a few months later that led to Triumph re-launching as a trio that would see the release of a self-titled debut album in 1976 before 1977’s follow-up, “Rock & Roll Machine”, began to gain some attention from US radio.

Triumph would go on to release 9 studio albums ahead of Emmett’s departure in 1988; a tenth record, 1992’s “Edge Of Excess”, rounded out the catalogue before the group essentially disbanded the following year.

Emmett went on to launch a solo career that produced more than a dozen records; the rocker has just reissued a series of 11 albums from his catalogue.

AC/DC revisit Back In Black classic Shoot To Thrill

AC/DC revisit their classic track, “Shoot To Thrill”, on the fourth and latest episode of a 40th anniversary video series celebrating the band’s 1980 album, “Back in Black.”

“I was just a reader and an observer of people,” says singer Brian Johnson about the song. “It basically wasn’t about the drug culture. What I was thinking of at the time, in England, it was more the housewives on valium because the National Health System was overloaded with women who were just depressed, despondent and all that, so the doctor – just to get them out of the bloody office – would say, ‘here, take some valium.’ And these women were dependent on it…‘Too many women, too many pills.’”

AC/DC added the Geordie frontman to their lineup in the months following the February 1980 passing of longtime vocalist Bon Scott as the group worked on new material with a plan for the project to serve as a tribute to their fallen bandmate.

The group reteamed with producer Mutt Lange for the record following the success of their 1979 collaboration on “Highway To Hell”, which delivered the band their first US Top 20 album.

“Back In Black” would reach No. 4 on the US Billboard 200 and go on to be the best-selling hard rock album in history, with estimated worldwide sales of 50 million.

“Hey Gunners, our 2020 North American tour dates are being rescheduled to summer 2021,” says the band. “The trek begins July 10th, 2021, in Milwaukee, WI at Summerfest and will make stops throughout the U.S. and Canada all summer before wrapping in Los Angeles, CA on August 19, 2021.

“Among these stops, many of our existing 2020 shows will move to a new date at the same venue,”

Deep Purple bassist reveals inspiration behind Whoosh! album

Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover is sharing some insight into the band’s inspiration behind their their forthcoming album, “Whoosh!”, in a new interview with WRIF Detroit.

Due August 7, the band recorded the set with Bob Ezrin in Nashville, TN; it’s their third consecutive project with the veteran producer, following 2013’s “Now What?!” and 2017’s “InFinite.”

"Meeting Bob Ezrin changed everything eight years ago," Glover tells WRIF’s Meltdown. "He came to see us play in Toronto and we had a meeting with him the next morning and he just said some great stuff. He sort of encouraged us to be us: 'You don't need to write anything that you think people are gonna expect. Just stretch out and be yourselves.' And that was great advice. And making the album was such a joy. They've all been a lot of fun.

"We don't start an album with any kind of plan; it just happens, like life,"
he continued. "We jammed for about eight, nine days — something like that — and we'd come up with a bunch of stuff and then pick and choose what we wanna work on. And it goes from there, and it sort of evolves. We don't write songs; we just let them evolve. Because the five of us are all throwing bits and pieces in towards it. We record all together in the same room; we don't layer stuff. We're a live band, and so we play live in the studio."

Deep Purple’s 21st studio record has been previewed with the lead single, “Throw My Bones”, and the follow-ups “Man Alive” and “Nothing At All.”

Originally due in June, the group delayed the release of “Whoosh!” due to the global pandemic.

"Well, it was recorded last year, actually, so the COVID thing didn't come into it, although I have to say some of the lyrics kind of have a disturbing connection," commented the rocker. “"Yeah, 'Whoosh!', 21st album, 50 years in the making. Every album is potentially our last album. We thought the last album was the last album, but there's another one. So we just keep going.

"I remember [late keyboardist] Jon Lord once described Deep Purple as an atomic toy — it just keeps going."

New AC/DC album reportedly delayed due to pandemic

Twisted Sister rocker Dee Snider says he knows that the release of the forthcoming new album by AC/DC has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While also stating that the project “has been recorded,” Snider tells ABC Audio: "I haven't heard anything, but...it's AC/DC, man. You can't go wrong!...Four chords and a dream, baby! That's it!"

Snider previously confirmed that he had dinner with AC/DC singer Brian Johnson late last year, and that the two spoke about the legendary band’s return with a record that will reportedly include material recorded by co-founder Malcolm Young, who passed away in November of 2017.

"This is gonna be a miracle of technology," Snider tells ABC Audio. "What will be achieved, the reuniting of the band that we know for one more album, is gonna to be uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time. Because nothing goes on forever. But this is the ultimate 'one more time.'"

The latest speculation about AC/DC’s plans follows reports last spring and summer that the group were preparing to announce a new album and record with Johnson – who was spotted alongside other band members at a Vancouver recording studio in the summer of 2018 – while longtime AC/DC engineer Mike Fraser confirmed that the band had been in the studio working on a project, without providing further context or details.

There has been no statement from AC/DC regarding their status or plans to date, as fans and media continue to wait for an official update from the band, who have returned to social media recently to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their 1980 classic, “Back In Black.”

U2 members perform acoustic version of Stairway To Heaven

U2 members Bono and The Edge delivered an abbreviated acoustic version of Led Zeppelin‘s iconic 1971 masterpiece, “Stairway To Heaven”, during an appearance on the July 25 broadcast of “Songs From An Empty Room” in Ireland.

The event, which saw performances by a number of Irish acts, saw the U2 duo play the song as a tribute to their road crew while everyone is off the road due to the global pandemic.

“There’s one annoying aspect of an Irish crew that has to be said,” explains Bono. “Wherever you go in the world, whatever venue you’re playing — whether it’s the Olympia or 3 Arena or Madison Square Garden — you walk into the venue and it’s a big moment, and you’ll hear a song that we said, ‘We’ll never, ever play this.’ And that’s right, ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ These professionals believe they play this better than the band. And you know, it might be true.”

“Stairway To Heaven” appeared on the UK band’s 1971 release, “Led Zeppelin IV”; one of the best-selling albums in music history, the project went on to sell more than 37 million copies worldwide, including 23 million in the US alone.

“Songs From An Empty Room” also served as a benefit for members of the Irish music industry, with proceeds from the music TV event going to support two local initiatives: Minding Creative Minds and the Association of Irish Stage Technicians (AIST) Hardship Fund.

Metallica are streaming video of their own bootleg footage of a full 1989 concert from Irvine, CA in the latest installment of their weekly streaming series.

“Metallica Mondays gets busted by security!,” says the band. “Check out the bootleg camcorder footage (with soundboard audio) from the final gig of the North American leg of the Damaged Justice tour … filmed on Lars’ personal camcorder at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA on September 23, 1989.

"Don't expect some fancy pro-shot video this time around!”

The trek in support of their fourth album, “...And Justice for All”, saw Metallica perform 219 shows before the year-long series arrived in Irvine for a three-night stand, which went on to wrap up with three dates in Brazil the following month.

“...And Justice for All” was a Top 10 record in several countries, including the US, where it reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 on its way to sales of eight million copies in the region.

1980 Van Halen classic gets all-star quarantine jam treatment

The 1980 Van Halen classic, “Loss Of Control”, is the latest tune to receive the all-star quarantine jam treatment in a series led by Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel.

The track from “Women And Children First” sees Demmel joined by vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Sons Of Apollo, Journey), bassist Billy Sheehan (Sons Of Apollo, Winery Dogs, David Lee Roth, Talas) and drummer Dave McClain (Machine Head, Sacred Reich).

“This a song Dave and I have been jamming for a while,” says Demmel. “It had to be covered. While I was touring with Nonpoint last year, my bud Jeff came to a show and we talked about our VH worship. He went on to show me his ‘tri-tone’ DLR screams that pretty much NO ONE can match. I've been waiting for the perfect tune to come along to ask him to do and this was perfect!

“I was going to reach for the moon and ask him to hit up his band-mate Billy to join us but he beat me to the punch and MADE IT HAPPEN. McClain puts on a tight shirt/Alex VH shades and kills this. If you haven't seen DLR's 1983 US Festival footage, check it out to get our opening scene Iced Tea reference.

“Such an honor to be joined by these guys to jam on a kick-ass song by some of our heroes of Rock.”

Van Halen’s third album, “Women And Children First” matched the success of its predecessor, “Van Halen II”, by reaching No. 6 on the US Billboard 200 on its way to sales of 3 million in the country.

Pearl Jam stream vintage performance of 1993 classic Dissident

Pearl Jam are streaming live video of a performance of their 1993 classic, “Dissident”, from a concert in Zurich, Switzerland in 2000.

The June 23 show at the city’s Hallenstadion was part of the Seattle group’s world tour in support of their sixth album, “Binaural.”

The fourth single issued from “Vs.” was a Top 10 track in some European countries, while their second album debuted at No.1 in several countries – including the US, where it sold 950,378 copies in its first five days to set the record for most copies of an album sold during its first week, a record the band held for five years.

Pearl Jam recently announced rescheduled dates for a European tour behind their latest album, “Gigaton”; originally set to begin last month, the month-long trek has been moved to summer 2021.

John Fogerty performs 1997 track Hot Rod Heart

John Fogerty and his family are streaming video of a quarantine jam performance of “Hot Rod Heart”, a track from his Grammy Award-winning 1997 album, “Blue Moon Swamp.”

“’Ooh, let's go ridin'! We put our top down and now we’re crusin’,” says the singer. “Jump in your hot rods, turn up the music, and join Fogerty’s Factory on the open road.”

The Creedence Clearwater Revival legend’s fifth studio record, “Blue Moon Swamp” topped the charts in Finland and Sweden, was Top 5 in Norway, and reached No. 37 on the US Billboard 200.

The set featured a variety of players, including legendary Booker T. & the M.G.'s bassist Donald Dunn, renowned Cuban percussionist Luis Conte, and drummer Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

“Blue Moon Swamp” was nominated for a pair of 1998 Grammy Awards; it was named Best Rock Album at the 40th annual ceremony – ahead of records by Aerosmith (“Nine Lives”), Foo Fighters (“The Color And The Shape”), The Rolling Stones (“Bridges To Babylon”) and U2 (“Pop”) – while the track "Blueboy" was in the running for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, but lost out to a tune by Bob Dylan.

Ozzy Osbourne previews Nine Lives documentary

Ozzy Osbourne is sharing a video preview of his forthcoming documentary, “The Nine Lives Of Ozzy Osbourne”, ahead of its broadcast premiere Monday, September 7 at 9 PM (ET/PT) on A&E.

The project traces Ozzy's life from his childhood in poverty and time in prison, to making a name as frontman for UK metal icons Black Sabbath and launching a successful solo career, to extending his profile as one of rock's elder statesman and a reality TV dad.

The two-hour documentary explores how Ozzy has continually reinvented himself and his career to propel himself toward greater success. As the Grammy-winning artist turns 70, he reflects on the intimate details of his successes, failures, and his unique ability for survival and perseverance-including never-before-seen interviews about his recent Parkinson's diagnosis.

The documentary, a selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, also features interviews with Sharon, Kelly and Jack Osbourne as well as friends and fellow musicians including Rick Rubin, Ice-T, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Jonathan Davis, Post Malone and more.

Osbourne issued his twelfth studio record, “Ordinary Man”, earlier this year; produced by guitarist Andrew Watt, the set was recorded with the rhythm section of Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and featured special guest appearances by Slash, Elton John and Tom Morello.

Osbourne has recently regrouped with Watt to work on a follow-up album.

Robert Plant announces Digging Deep anthology

Robert Plant will release a new anthology, “Digging Deep: Subterranea”, on October 2.

The limited edition 2CD set presents 30 songs from the rocker’s extensive solo career – from his 1982 debut, “Pictures At Eleven”, to his eleventh and latest effort, 2017’s “Carry Fire.”

The package includes three previously unreleased tracks: "Nothing Takes The Place Of You," "Charlie Patton Highway (Turn It Up - Part 1)" – from the forthcoming “Band Of Joy Volume 2” album – and a cover of rockabilly artist Charlie Feathers’ 1957 tune, "Too Much Alike”, featuring Patty Griffin.

The forthcoming anthology follows a “Digging Deep” limited-edition seven-inch singles box set the singer issued last December; the 8-disc package included 16 A-sides and rare B-sides as featured in the first two seasons of Plant’s podcast of the same name.

Prior to the pandemic, the Led Zeppelin icon was gearing up to play his first US concert dates this spring with his new band, Saving Grace; the outfit made their debut last year with a series of surprise gigs in small venues across England, Wales, and Ireland and, later, a trio of UK dates supporting Fairport Convention.

Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green dead at 73

Fleetwood Mac co-founder and guitarist Peter Green has died at the age of 73.

According to the BBC, solicitors acting on behalf of his family said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Green announce his death this weekend, peacefully in his sleep.

"A further statement will be provided in the coming days."

Born in Bethnal Green in east London in 1946, Green began his career as a teenager playing in various UK outfits; his profile as a blues guitarist got a boost when he replaced Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers at the age of 19.

A year later, Green brought Bluesbreakers drummer Mick Fleetwood with him to form Fleetwood Mac alongside guitarist Jeremy Spencer and Bob Brunning in London; a short time later, Brunning was replaced by Mayall’s bassist John McVie and the band recorded and issued their self-titled debut album in early 1968, which went Top 5 in the country.

The guitarist – who appeared on the follow-up, “Mr. Wonderful”, and 1969’s “Then Play On” – wrote a number of classic tracks and hits for the group during the early years, including “Black Magic Woman”, “Man Of The World”, “Oh Well”, "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)" and the UK No.1 “Albatross.”

A month after leaving Fleetwood Mac in the spring of 1970, Green recorded his solo debut, “The End Of The Game”; after being diagnosed with schizophrenia and spending time in psychiatric hospitals in the mid-70s, he returned to issue a second record, “In The Skies”, in 1979, and a yearly series of albums up until 1984.

Green stayed active through the years in a variety of outfits; Mick Fleetwood organized an all-star tribute concert to his former bandmate in London this past February that saw appearances by Mayall, Spencer and Christine McVie, David Gilmour, Kirk Hammett, Billy Gibbons, Steven Tyler, Pete Townsend, Bill Wyman and Noel Gallagher.

The news of Green’s passing comes just days after Fleetwood Mac announced the fall release of a box set documenting the band’s early years; the package opens with 1969’s “Then Play On.”

Patty Smyth explains why she turned down offer to join Van Halen

Scandal singer Patty Smyth is sharing insight as to why she turned down a 1985 offer to join Van Halen following the departure of David Lee Roth.

After the California rockers hit their commercial peak with the “1984” album, guitarist Eddie Van Halen was left without a frontman, and he approached his friend, Smyth, with an offer to join the band.

After scoring a series of hits with Scandal through a number of lineup changes, Smyth says she had a few reasons to pass on Van Halen.

“They were heavy drinkers. I don't drink,” Smyth tells Stereogum while promoting her forthcoming record, “It's About Time.” “I never saw myself living in L.A. I was, like, 'I'm from New York. We don't move to L.A.'

"It's all semantics because if [Eddie] had said to me, 'Let's make a record,' then I would have said yes to that. But joining the band – to me then, 'Oh god, they fight all the time, him and his brother, and I don't want to get into a volatile situation.' And I was probably heavily hormoned out because I was eight months pregnant, so there was a state of mind that I was in of how I need to take care of myself. But I regretted turning him down. For a long time, I regretted it. When you start to have regrets, I was, like, 'Oh, man. I would've made so much money.'"

Smyth confirms her past band experience also influenced her decision.

“Yeah, that definitely has something to do with it. I’m sure,” explains the singer. “And also just the fact that it was like, ‘I’m going to have to move to LA.’ I should have just had the conversation [with Eddie]. It was such a weird conversation. But if he had said to me, ‘Look, just come out for a few months and make a record. Have the baby, come out and let’s make a record.’ That to me would’ve been more doable.

“And I never said anything about it for years. I got a call from Ed and he was like, ‘Look, I’m not saying that I asked you to join because I don’t want Sammy Hagar to look like [he was] second choice,’ and I was like, ‘OK.’ So I never spoke about it after that. I’m like, all right I don’t need to tell people. If someone asked me, I didn’t lie but I didn’t really talk about it that much.”

Not long after Smyth turned Van Halen down, the band brought in Hagar and released their first album with him, “5150”, in the spring of 1986.

Pink Floyd stream Brain Damage from restored Pulse concert film

Pink Floyd are streaming a performance of their “Dark Side Of The Moon” track, “Brain Damage”, from their 1995 concert film “Pulse.”

The band were filmed live in London, UK during a 1994 tour in support of their album, “The Division Bell”; this version was restored and re-edited in 2019 from the original tape masters for “The Later Years” box set.

The home video release of “Pulse” documented an October 20 concert as part of the group’s sold-out, 14-night stand at the city’s Earls Court before a combined total of 273,000 fans; the shows featured music from their latest record alongside a complete performance of their 1973 classic, “The Dark Side Of The Moon.”

“Pulse” topped the US Music Video sales chart upon its original release and was a top 10 set in several countries, where it went on to earn multi-platinum status.

“The Division Bell” tour saw Pink Floyd play before 5.5 million fans in 68 cities and took in box office revenue of over £150 million (about US$250 million) to became the highest-grossing tour in rock music history to that date.

Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall Of Fame in 2005, Pink Floyd released their final album, “The Endless River”, in 2014.
