Muse aiming to release new album in fall 2012

UK rockers Muse are in the early stages of work on the follow-up to 2009’s “The Resistance,” an album that saw the band tour the world for 14-months, starting in October 2009 and wrapping up this summer with a headline slot at the U.K. dual-site Reading and Leeds festival.

Band manager Anthony Addis confirmed the group is already working on what comes next – album number six.

“They've now gone into the recording studio,” Addis tells Billboard.biz. “The plan is to do it all in London...Hopefully, [the album] might come out October next year. They've written a lot of material already but you don't know how it's going to gel between them all. They write constantly. They write on the road, so before or after a gig they'll write nearly every night. It's a serious process, but you don't know how it's going to turn out [until] you start practicing it together, because everybody's done it individually.”

As a manager, Addis doesn’t get involved in pre-screening Muse’s early work-in-progress.

“No, I will not listen to it. I'm not interested until they believe it's in the right form,” he explains. “If you trust an artist, you've got to trust the music that they make. You've got to trust that they will get it right. What's the use of listening to something that is half-baked? Our job is to plan the next two and half/three years from when you think they will finish it.”

Even with the success of The Resistance Tour, Addis is aware there’s room to grow for the band, although the current economic climate isn’t helping.

“In America, the answer is yes - although I think the sheds are a problem. We did a joint headline show with Rage Against The Machine in L.A. at the 90,000-capacity Memorial Coliseum and there were about 55,000 people there. People haven't got the money anymore. I think it's worldwide. I think it's just hitting into the U.K. now, as you can see with retail.”

Muse has prided itself on maintaining reasonable ticket prices for fans and that plan will continue as thing move forward.

“Our strategy is never to rip off the fans,” says Addis. “The fan comes to have an experience. He or she has worked for that money. Either that or they robbed a bank. So you've got to give them an experience at the right price. We've increased worldwide [ticket sales] by 40% each time. And that's how we increase the fan base, because they've enjoyed it as a spectacle. Every night after the show we have an analysis of what went down right and what didn't, and all of that is logged in into a database. We know what happened in every show and every city going back all the years. If a number didn't go down well, then it will not appear in the set next time.”

James Durbin tops the hennemusic Hot 10

As the lone rocker on American Idol this season, James Durbin has been making a real name for himself and fans are taking notice, as he tops the hennemusic Hot 10 this week.

For “21st Century songs” night on Wednesday, Durbin tackled Muse’s “Uprising,” displaying a post-apocalyptic visual for himself as he was surrounded by marching band drummers.

From setting pianos on fire to having Zakk Wylde sit in on guitar in recent weeks, Durbin is on the rise and presents one of the strongest contenders for the Idol crown with the May 25 finale on the horizon.

Metallica fans got word that the band has been confirmed for the Quebec Summer Festival (Festival d'été de Québec) on July 16 in Québec City, Québec, Canada. News of the initial buzz about the possibility of the metal icons’ involvement was the #5 story this week, while the actual confirmation came in at #3. Quebec will rock, indeed, this summer.

A February item on Van Halen’s latest album project has been rediscovered by hennemusic readers this week, who brought the story back to life, pushing it into the #4 spot.

Other big stories included a KISS recording update from guitarist Tommy Thayer, more summer tour dates for Ted Nugent, a Freddie Mercury tribute planned for this fall’s Rock In Rio, and the shocker of the week: guitarist K.K. Downing’s retirement from Judas Priest.

VIDEO: James Durbin rocks Muse on American Idol

James Durbin keeps impressing on American Idol, and this week was no different.

Durbin put together a visual experience to match his performance level, pulling out all the stops for his version of Muse’s “Uprising,” on 21st Century Songs week.

Since his vocals have never been in question, it’s been interesting to watch Durbin grow each week in the visual department: from pianos on fire to Zakk Wylde sitting in, James continues to develop a mentality of creating an overall concert experience.

For his Muse track, James had a post-apocalyptic look as he played alongside a marching band drum section. There was something else familiar about the whole thing, as James explained post-show via Twitter:

“The mic stand/cane was a take on Freddie Mercury turned (in honor of him being crowned The Golden God Award) Mr. Alice Cooper! Thank you ALL!”

Both sonically and visually, no one else in the Top 7 compared and Durbin stole the show…again.

U2's Edge joins Muse at Glastonbury

The Edge joined Muse on the Glastonbury stage this past weekend for a pretty faithful rendition of “Where The Streets Have No Name.”

Edge appeared for the first encore song of Muse’s headlining set Saturday night.

U2, of course, were originally due to headline the festival themselves last weekend, but had to postpone the second leg of their 360 World Tour due to Bono’s recent back surgery.

Muse are currently on tour in support of their latest disc, “The Resistance.”
