Neil Young releases lost 1987 album Summer Songs

Neil Young is streaming his newly-released lost 1987 album, “Summer Songs”, for members of the Neil Young Archives site.

“Happy Holidays everyone! I think you will enjoy this very cool recording—lost for years, but not forgotten. Now a gift”, shared Young on Christmas at his online home. “‘American Dream’ feels more real than ever. How could somethin’ so good go bad so fast? Wow, that was a little sad. But things are still good down on the farm right? Not so fast.”

“Summer Songs” presents a collection of Young material that would later surface in bits and pieces on future albums.

“This group of songs had just been written and put down in the studio at Broken Arrow (as far as we can figure),” Young explains. “We cannot completely be sure of the engineer who was recording these and I don’t remember the sessions at all! Every song in the collection was with acoustic guitar or piano and simple added embellishments—sketches of arrangements we made to preserve the initial ideas.

“These originals were first introduced in their final master versions on the albums Freedom, American Dream, Psychedelic Pill, and Harvest Moon. They will be included in NYA Volume 3 and may be released as a separate archive album before that. It is a beautiful listen, created over a short period of time, that influenced 4 albums.

“‘The Last of His Kind,‘ ‘For the Love of Man,’ ‘American Dream,’ ‘Name of Love,’ ‘Someday,’ ‘One of These Days,’ ‘Hangin’ on a Limb‘ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ are the original eight performances. The words of these originals are significantly different from their subsequent master album releases in many cases. Several completely new and unheard verses are found in the songs of this collection.”

The surprise release of “Summer Songs” follows the December 10 arrival of “Barn”, the latest album by Young and Crazy Horse.

Pink Floyd stream Division Bell track rehearsal from Pulse reissue

Pink Floyd are streaming video of a rehearsal version of “The Division Bell” track, “A Great Day For Freedom”, as a preview to the upcoming reissue of their 1995 concert film, “Pulse.”

Due February 18, the restored and re-edited project captures the group on the European leg of a 1994 tour and, among other highlights, it presents the only filmed version of a full performance of the UK outfit’s seminal 1973 record, “The Dark Side Of The Moon.”

Headed by director David Mallet, the package will be available as 2x Blu-ray and 2x DVD deluxe box sets, with the video footage having been expertly re-edited by Aubrey Powell/Hipgnosis from the original tape masters especially for “The Later Years” release in 2019.

Foo Fighters stream Madison Square Garden re-opening concert replay

The Foo Fighters are streaming video of their full Madison Square Garden re-opening concert for a limited time.

The June 20 event saw the band deliver the first 100% full capacity concert at the iconic venue since a March 2020 50th anniversary tribute performance by the surviving members of The Allman Brothers Band.

Playing in support of their latest album, “Medicine At Midnight”, the Foo Fighters performed for nearly three hours to an enthusiastic crowd, while Dave Grohl shared his thoughts on the concert's historic nature.

"For the last year, I had this recurring dream that I would walk onstage and we would look at each other for the first time and it would take a couple minutes and we'd just look at each other like, ‘Thank god we got through this,'" Grohl told the audience during "Best Of You." "I walked out onstage tonight and it was just like that f**king dream. So thank you very much everybody for making my dream come true tonight."

Comedian Dave Chappelle was the evening’s surprise guest, sitting in to sing a cover of the Radiohead classic, “Creep”.

The Foos dedicated the MSG show to their longtime stage manager Andy Pollard, who passed away just two days prior to the concert.

Green Day have not shared any additional context or details about the video preview; it may be worth noting that Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool were all born in 1972 and will turn 50 in 2022.

The band have issued three new singles this year, including “Here Comes the Shock“, “Pollyanna”, and “Holy Toledo!”

Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick gives guitar collection tour

Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick gives a private tour of his guitars in the latest installment of the Gibson series, “The Collection.”

“When it comes to guitar collections, some are so large, so special, and so rare, that even the best collectors can’t help but do a double-take. This is how you would define Rick Nielsen’s collection - a total head-turner,” reads the show’s synopsis. “In the latest episode of ‘The Collection,’ host Mark Agnesi heads to Rockford, IL to visit the godfather of guitar hoarding. Rick Nielsen, the lead guitarist for Cheap Trick, takes us through his cavern of guitars. Ranging from quirky and strange to the ultimate rare and last of its kind. And in a “The Collection” first, Rick shows off three original 1958 Explorers out of only nineteen in existence.

“While Rick's guitar bevy is superior to most, what's striking is his irreverence for 'value' in a world full of collectors and purists. In Rick's eyes, the guitar belongs to him, and how pristine the guitar is doesn't really matter. His passion for guitars and the guitar world is apparent as he is still adding to the vault. Follow along as Rick takes us through his fantastic collection.”

Neilsen was among the members who formed Cheap Trick in Rockford in 1973; the group issued its self-titled debut and follow-up, “In Color”, in 1977 and “Heaven Tonight” in 1978 before breaking into the mainstream with the 1979 live album, “At Budokan.”

With sales of more than 20 million albums, Cheap Trick were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2016.

KISS museum to open in Las Vegas in 2022

Gene Simmons will launch a KISS museum in Las Vegas in 2022.

The 72-year-old bassist tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal that a 15,000-square-foot space at the Rio Hotel and Casino will feature “hundreds and hundreds” of items from his personal collection, including costumes, stage props and gold and platinum albums.

The Rio has hosted the KISS-themed Kiss By Monster Mini Golf since 2016; Simmons reveals that the glow-in-the-dark attraction is being expanded alongside the new museaum exhibit.

“It’s going to be breathtaking,” says Simmons, who visited the site recently. “I was there the first day, as my stuff started to come in. We have three tractor-trailers full of stuff, and it’s going to be spectacular. The fans are going to dig it. You can play golf, you can have your photo taken, you can take videos of yourself onstage with Kiss, and then go visit my private collection.”

The KISS Museum is expected to open in March, with full details to be announced at a later date.

A KISS residency in Las Vegas that was originally set to launch next week at the Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood was canceled without explanation in October; Simmons has since claimed that the city is “too busy” at this time of year and that the band is hoping to reschedule the series when there is less competition from other artists performing in the area at the same time. Nirvana respond to Nevermind cover lawsuit

Nirvana have responded to a lawsuit that claims the band violated child pornography laws with the cover of their 1991 album, “Nevermind.”

30-year-old Spencer Elden originally took legal action this summer over allegations of child sexual exploitation based on the nude image of him as a four-month-old in a swimming pool featured on the project.

According to Billboard, Nirvana filed its first formal response to the lawsuit on Wednesday, saying that the suit was brought years after the statute of limitations had run out by a man who had long embraced the image.

“Elden has spent three decades profiting from his celebrity as the self-anointed ‘Nirvana Baby,’” the band wrote, noting that Elden had “re-enacted the photograph in exchange for a fee” multiple times and has the name of the album tattooed on his chest. The band even accused Elden of having “used the connection to try to pick up women,” citing a media interview in which he recounted such a story.

Federal child pornography law has a 10-year statute of limitations, which begins running from the point when a victim “reasonably discovers” the problem — meaning either the violation itself or the harm caused by it. For Elden, Nirvana said, that would mean he only discovered the image in 2011.

“But the Nevermind cover photograph was taken in 1991. It was world-famous by no later than 1992,” the band wrote. “Long before 2011, as Elden has pled, Elden knew about the photograph, and knew that he (and not someone else) was the baby in the photograph. He has been fully aware of the facts of both the supposed ‘violation’ and ‘injury’ for decades.”

“Elden’s claim that the photograph on the Nevermind album cover is ‘child pornography’ is, on its face, not serious,” the band wrote Wednesday, hinting at future arguments. “A brief examination of the photograph, or Elden’s own conduct (not to mention the photograph’s presence in the homes of millions of Americans who, on Elden’s theory, are guilty of felony possession of child pornography) makes that clear.”

Read more about the latest in the case at billboard.com.

The original suit by Eldon sought damages of at least $150,000 from each of the 15 named defendants, who include surviving band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic; the managers of Kurt Cobain's estate; Cobain's former wife Courtney Love; and Weddle; a recently-revised edition drops former Nirvana drummer Chad Channing as a defendant in the case, and no longer names Warner Music, nor Heather Parry and Guy Oseary, who were previously listed as managers of Cobain’s estate.

This fall, Nirvana released a series of expanded editions of “Nevermind” to mark the project’s 30th anniversary, while the set’s smash single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, passed one billion streams on Spotify earlier this year.

ZZ Top sells music catalog for $50 million

ZZ Top have reportedly sold the rights to their music catalog to BMG and KKR for an estimated $50 million.

According to Variety, the agreement includes a buyout of the band’s publishing catalogue and their income from recorded royalties and performance royalties.

ZZ Top – who released their debut album in 1971 and released 14 more over the course of their 50-year career – have sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.

While BMG and KKR announced in March that they would partner up for music IP, they have largely worked separately in the months since, with BMG acquiring catalogs from Tina Turner and Motley Crue, while KKR’s Chord Music acquired a catalog from Kobalt for around $1.1 billion.

Previously, BMG served as co-publisher and administrator of ZZ Top’s publishing catalog.

“We are proud to continue working with and expand our long-standing relationship with BMG,” says ZZ Top manager Carl Stubner of Shelter Music Group. “This new deal ensures ZZ Top’s remarkable legacy will endure for generations to come.”

This past summer, ZZ Top enlisted longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis to handle bass duties on a 2021 tour after Dusty Hill stepped away from the trek to address a hip issue; Hill passed away in his sleep at his home in Houston, TX a few days later.

ZZ Top delivered the No. 7 Rock News Story of The Year and were named the No. 3 Rock News Artist Of The Year as part of the 2021 hennemusic Rock News Awards.

Among the rarities was the first performance of the 1984 “Ride the Lightning” song, “Trapped Under Ice”, since June of 2012.

Earlier this year, Pearl Jam also released a 25th anniversary 150-gram vinyl edition of “No Code”, marking the first time the album has been available on the format since its original release and the first time the album has been mastered specifically for vinyl.

Eddie Vedder is scheduled to begin a US Tour in support of his forthcoming album, “Earthling”, with two nights at New York’s Beacon Theatre in early February, while Pearl Jam will open a rescheduled European tour with two shows in Amsterdam in June.

Paul Stanley of KISS recovering from shoulder surgery

KISS frontman Paul Stanley is recovering from recent shoulder surgery.

“SHOULDER SURGERY TODAY!,” tweeted Stanley on December 15. “How many show related surgeries have I had?? I lost count at EIGHT!! Was it worth it?!? ABSOLUTELY! Judge the value of what of you have by what you sacrificed to achieve that goal. This was a joy-filled BARGAIN.”

Currently on a break from their End Of The Road farewell tour, KISS will resume the series in Australia next March.

Last month, KISS released a 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition of their 1976 album, “Destroyer.”

Produced by Bob Ezrin, the band’s fourth studio set featured instant classics like “Detroit Rock City,” “Shout It Out Loud,” “God Of Thunder” and their highest-charting US hit, “Beth.”

You can stream the full Super Deluxe Edition of “Destroyer” here.
