Former Black Crowes drummer sues band over unpaid royalties

Former Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman is suing the band over what he claims are unpaid royalties, among other things.

According to Rolling Stone, Gorman filed a lawsuit against Chris and Rich Robinson and “The Black Crowes Partnership” on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court in an effort to audit the partnership’s records.

The brothers Robinson, Gorman and bassist Chuck Brandt (a.k.a Johnny Colt) formed a partnership in 1991 to collect royalties for the group, with the drummer claiming his requests for information have been denied numerous times.

The drummer is suing for breach of contract, among other complaints.

“For more than five years, my attorneys and I have made repeated requests to review the Partnership’s books to confirm the accuracy of royalty payments and my share, but Chris and Rich have consistently ignored my rights under the Partnership Agreement,” Gorman said in a statement. “I regret that it has come to this, as I remain incredibly proud of the music we created as a band, but their conduct has left me with no choice but to ask a court to order them to give me this information, which I’m entitled to under our partnership agreement and the law.”

Gorman is among a number of former band members who are not involved in the ongoing Robinson brothers reunion under the group’s name, which they relaunched in 2019. See also:

BBC film series highlights Rolling Stones 60th anniversary specials

A four-part series of films, “My Life as a Rolling Stone”, is the centrepiece to a newly-announced summer season of BBC programming that will celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Rolling Stones.

Each of the films in the series presents an intimate portrait of band members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts, mixing new interviews with archived sessions and performances and thoughts from fellow artists who’ve been inspired by the band, including P.P. Arnold, Chrissie Hynde, Slash, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner and Steven Tyler.

The story of Charlie Watts, who sadly passed away in August 2021, will be told via tributes from his fellow band members and his musical peers and admirers along with archive interviews of Charlie.

The series, which will be broadcast on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer this summer, is directed by award-winning filmmakers Oliver Murray (Bill Wyman, The Quiet One) and Clare Tavernor (Keith Richards: A Culture Show Special).

“We are thrilled to celebrate 60 years of The Rolling Stones with these four films which give fans around the world a new and fascinating look at the band,” says band manager Joyce Smyth.

In addition to the four-part BBC Two series, a curated collection of landmark concerts and documentaries will be available on BBC iPlayer this summer, including 2012’s “Crossfire Hurricane” and “The Rolling Stones: Totally Stripped” (original version 1995, re-versioned edition 2016).

BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds will host a two-hour audio documentary, “Rolling with The Stones”, this summer, with a complementary series – “Rolling With The Stones Raw” - available exclusively on BBC Sounds.

The Rolling Stones will open a 60th anniversary tour of the UK and Europe in Madrid, Spain on June 1. See also:

Sex Pistols biopic series Pistol to premiere on Hulu

The Sex Pistols’ limited-edition FX series, “Pistol”, will premiere on Hulu on May 31.

Directed by Danny Boyle - the Academy Award-winning director of “Trainspotting” and “Slumdog Millionaire” – the biopic is based on a 2017 memoir by guitarist Steve Jones entitled “Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol.”

The project stars Toby Wallace as Jones, Anson Boon as Johnny Rotten, Louis Partridge as Sid Vicious, Jacob Slater as Paul Cook, and Christian Lees as Glen Matlock, with Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Queen’s Gambit) portraying manager Malcolm McLaren and Talulah Riley (Westworld) playing punk design icon Vivienne Westwood.

"Imagine breaking into the world of 'The Crown' and 'Downton Abbey' with your mates and screaming your songs and your fury at all they represent," says Boyle. "This is the moment that British society and culture changed forever. It is the detonation point for British street culture...where ordinary young people had the stage and vented their fury and their fashion…and everyone had to watch and listen…and everyone feared them or followed them. The SEX PISTOLS.

“At its center was a young charming illiterate kleptomaniac — a hero for the times — Steve Jones, who became in his own words, the 94th greatest guitarist of all time. This is how he got there."

Also set to air on Disney+ in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, “Pistol” made headlines last year when members of the Sex Pistols battled in a London High Court over the rights to use the band’s music in the series.

Jones and Cook sued Rotten after the singer refused to grant permission for the group’s songs to be included in the series, with a judge ruling in their favor based on the terms of a 1998 band agreement stating that decisions regarding licensing requests could be determined on a “majority rules basis”; a lawyer for Cook and Jones said both the band’s original bassist, Matlock, and the estate of his replacement, Vicious (who died in 1979), supported their position.

Inspired by New York bands the Ramones and the New York Dolls, among others, the Sex Pistols formed in London in 1975 and helped to propel the UK punk scene through a series of four singles and one studio album, 1977’s “Never Mind The Bollocks…Here’s The Sex Pistols”, before disbanding just three months after its release.

Billy Idol cancels live dates due to sinus infection

Billy Idol has cancelled a pair of upcoming performances as he continues to recover from recent sinus infection surgery.

The rocker – who recently pulled out of a North American tour with Journey due to the health issue – has alerted fans of his plans via social media.

"Due to my continued sinusitis infection, I'm disappointed to announce that I must cancel my appearance at both Shaky Knees in Atlanta on April 29 and at Hard Rock Live in Florida on May 1,” explains Idol. “When we confirmed these shows I was sure that I would have recovered in time to play, but unfortunately this infection has proven pesky and lingering, requiring some more time before I get back out on the stage.

"To all the fans who were looking forward to these gigs, I'm very sorry to miss them. Cancelling shows is not something I do casually. We'll no doubt come back to Georgia and Florida another time soon. Sincerely, BFI."

Idol is next scheduled to begin a UK tour in Glasgow in June.

Foo Fighters cancel all shows following death of Taylor Hawkins

The Foo Fighters have officially canceled all of their previously-scheduled shows following the March 25 death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in Colombia.

"It is with great sadness that Foo Fighters confirm the cancellation of all upcoming tour dates in light of the staggering loss of our brother Taylor Hawkins,” shared the band on social media. "We're sorry for and share in the disappointment that we won't be seeing one another as planned. Instead, let's take this time to grieve, to heal, to pull our loved ones close, and to appreciate all the music and memories we've made together.

"With Love, Foo Fighters."

The band were next scheduled to perform on the Grammy Awards on April 3, where they are nominated in three categories; a North American tour was to begin in May, with shows in New Zealand and Australia planned for November and December.

Hawkins passed away in his hotel room in Bogota, Colombia on March 25 at the age of 50 while the group were playing a series of shows in South America this month.

While an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the drummer’s passing, Colombia's Attorney General's Office shared some details in a preliminary "forensic medical study" that determined a urine toxicology test found 10 substances in his system, including THC, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids.

Hawkins joined Foo Fighters in 1997 and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame when the band was honored in 2021.

Mick Jagger records theme song for Apple TV Plus series Slow Horses

Mick Jagger has co-written, recorded and performed the theme tune for the Apple TV Plus Original series “Slow Horses,” with film composer Daniel Pemberton.

Due April 1, the song will arrive in sync with the launch of the six-part espionage adventure based on a series of acclaimed books by Mick Herron; it follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 – Slough House on the outskirts of London – with Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but irascible leader of the spies who end up in Slough House due to their career ending mistakes.

“Slow Horses” also stars Kristen Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce, Olivia Cook and Jack Lowden.

Pemberton approached Jagger to work on the title song for the project.

“Out of the blue, I got an email from a guy I didn’t know, Daniel Pemberton,” Jagger tells Rolling Stone. “I’d heard of him, because he’d done quite a lot of TV and film music, English guy, and he’d gotten a lot of kudos [and] nominations for awards. He said, ‘Would you be interested in doing this TV theme?’ I’m always up for doing something different.”

"Working with Mick Jagger has been one of the most exciting collaborations of my professional career,” says Pemberton. “I think we have managed to create an incredibly unique and original titles theme and I cannot wait for the rest of the world to hear it.”

“We always wanted a song to set the tone for the show and there was only ever one name in my mind - Mick Jagger,”
adds director James Hawes. “Hearing the track for the first time was utterly thrilling. Mick’s lyrics and performance have totally nailed the mood of Slow Horses, with all the humour and swagger I dreamed of."

On May 13, Jagger and The Rolling Stones will release a live album of their legendary 1977 performances at the Toronto’s El Mocambo club, and then launch a 60th anniversary tour of the UK and Europe in Madrid, Spain on June 1.

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins dead at 50

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins died in Bogota, Colombia on March 25 at the age of 50.

"The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins," shared the band on social media. "His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever.

"Our hearts go out to his wife, children, and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time."

The Associated Press reports the Bogota municipal government issued a statement that the city’s emergency center had received a report of a patient with “chest pain”, and that ambulances were sent to the Four Seasons Casa Medina hotel, where the band was staying; Bogotá’s Secretary of Health later tweeted that attempts were made by emergency personnel to revive Hawkins before he was declared dead at the scene, and that an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the rocker’s passing.

The Foo Fighters were in Bogota to perform at the Picnic Stereo festival on Friday as part of a series of South American tour dates that were set to wrap up with a March 27 headlining appearance at Lollapalooza Brazil.

Born in Fort Worth, TX, and raised in California, Hawkins played locally before joining Sass Jordan’s band and, later, toured with Alanis Morissette in the mid-1990s.

The drummer joined Foo Fighters in 1997; he appeared on the group’s third album, 1999’s “There Is Nothing Left To Lose”, the first of eight studio records with the band up to and including 2021’s “Medicine At Midnight.”

Hawkins branched out in 2006 as a solo artist, launching Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, who would go on to issue three albums; he also began a classic rock covers band called Chevy Metal and its offshoot, The Birds Of Satan, and, recently formed the supergroup NHC with Jane’s Addiction members Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney.

Taylor also contributed to records by a number of artists, including Brian May of Queen, Slash, Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, and Coheed and Cambria, among others.

Hawkins was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2021 as a member of the Foo Fighters.

Aerosmith drummer to sit out 2022 Las Vegas residency

Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer will sit out the band’s 2022 Las Vegas residency.

Kramer has "regrettably made the decision to sit out the band's concerts in 2022 so he can focus his full attention on his family during these uncertain times," the group said in a statement to USA Today. As Kramer "takes a temporary leave of absence", “he and the band look forward to his future performances with Aerosmith."

Kramer’s tech, John Douglas, will handle drums for the 2022 series, which is set to begin in June at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas, NV as part of the Boston outfit’s “Deuces Are Wild” residency.

Kramer became temporarily estranged from Aerosmith in 2019 after suffering a shoulder injury that led to his missing some of the early shows in the Las Vegas series, with Douglas stepping into the lineup.

After returning for the residency events, the parties had a dispute later that year over Kramer’s ability to perform at a satisfactory level that led to the drummer suing his bandmates in an effort to play with them at a pair of early 2020 events – including the Grammy Awards; a judge eventually granted the group permission to appear without him.

A number of pre-sales that are underway for the 2022 “Deuces Are Wild” shows will end Wednesday, March 30 at 10 p.m. PT, with general public tickets going on sale Thursday, March 31 at 10 a.m. PT.

Aerosmith will release a vintage live recording, “Aerosmith 1971 – The Road Starts Hear”, on April 8.

Slash announces Live From Boston streaming concert event

Slash Ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators will celebrate the release of their latest album, “4”, with a live streaming performance on April 15.

"Live From Boston" was shot on location this month during the group’s sold out show at the city’s House Of Blues as they delivered a mix of classic favourites and new songs from the 2022 record.

The event will be available Friday, April 15, at 3 PM ET via premium concert livestream platform Veeps; tickets are on sale now, and the show will be available for viewing for 48 hours after the original stream airs.

Slash and the group recorded "4" with producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile) at the historic RCA Studio A to Nashville, TN, capturing the new material with a series of full band performances live in the studio.

First introduced last fall with the opening track and lead single, “The River Is Rising”, the project marks the guitarist’s fifth solo album and fourth overall with his band featuring Kennedy, drummer Brent Fitz, bassist Todd Kerns and guitarist Frank Sidoris.

Slash and the group will wrap up a spring US tour in Orlando, FL on March 26.

Dave Grohl streams Dream Widow thrash metal EP

Dave Grohl is streaming his newly-available thrash metal EP, “Dream Widow.”

The project is featured in the Foo Fighters’ horror-comedy film, “Studio 666”, where the group attempt to record their newest album in the same house where the legendary — and fictional — Dream Widow met its tragic and untimely end.

"The premise of the movie is that we move into this house, I have writer's block, I'm totally uninspired, I can't come up with anything," shared Grohl during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in February. "And I wind up finding this creepy basement. And I go into the basement, I find this tape by a band from 25 years ago that recorded there. And there's this song that, if recorded and completed, the f***ing demon in the house is unleashed, and then, whatever, all hell breaks loose.

"And we come in 25 years later to record, having no idea what happened 25 years ago, and I start becoming possessed by the spirit of the guy from 25 years ago and the spirit of the house. But this song, 'March of the Insane,' this is their lost record. This is the record they were making before their singer murdered [them]."

“Studio 666” includes appearances from Jeff Garlin, Will Forte and Whitney Cummings.

The Dream Widow project sees Grohl (handling vocals, guitar, bass and drums) working with lead guitarist Jim Rota of Fireball Ministry renown, with assistance on a few tracks by keyboardists Rami Jaffee and Oliver Roman.

Currently playing dates in South America, the Foo Fighters will perform at the Grammy Awards on April 3.

ZZ Top stream Brown Sugar performance from Raw live album

ZZ Top are streaming audio of a performance of their 1971 classic, “Brown Sugar”, from the forthcoming live package, “Raw.”

The song from “ZZ Top’s First Album” was recorded as part of an intimate session at Gruene Hall, “the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas”, as captured for the 2019 Netflix documentary, “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.”

It was, in a very real way, a return to our roots,” explain Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard in the set’s liner notes. “Just us and the music, no audience of thousands, no concession stands, no parking lot social hour, no phalanx of tour busses. Just us and the music. We knew right then it was a very special circumstance, all of us in the same place at the same time and what a time it most certainly was!

“It was as bare bones as when we first started touring in a behemoth Chrysler station wagon, driving vast stretches between those early far-flung shows under blackened Texas skies and first hearing our records on the radio. We were bonded as brothers.

‘The Dust’ may have left the building but he’s still very much with us.”

Due July 22, “Raw” is dedicated “in righteous memory of Dusty Hill”, the bassist who passed away at his home in Houston, TX last July after stepping away from a 2021 tour to address a hip issue; the group enlisted longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis to handle bass duties during what was expected to be a short-term absence, and who continues to perform with the group.

“Raw” will be available on 180 gram vinyl, CD and through digital platforms.

A companion summer tour of North America will begin May 6 in Niagara Falls, ON.

The Rolling Stones announce Live At The El Mocambo album

The Rolling Stones will release a live album of their legendary 1977 performances at the El Mocambo club in Toronto, ON.

Due May 13, the project presents the first official appearance of the group's two famous secret concerts at the 300-capacity venue.

A radio contest was organized in which the prize was tickets to see Canadian rock heroes April Wine at the club, supported by an unknown band called the Cockroaches; as it turned out, April Wine were themselves the opening act as the Stones took the stage.

“Live At The El Mocambo” features the Stones' full set from the March 5 show, plus three bonus tracks from the March 4 gig, newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain. Only four of the performances found their way onto the “Love You Live” album that followed in September 1977, which was dominated by tracks captured on the band's 1975 and '76 tours, with the full set having never been heard before.

“We’re up on stage at the El Mocambo and we never felt better,” recalls Keith Richards. “I mean, we sounded great.”

“Live At The El Mocambo” will be available in multiple configurations, including double CD, 4 LP black vinyl, 4 LP neon vinyl and digitally.

The package is being previewed with a video trailer and audio of “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It)” and “Rip This Joint.”

The Rolling Stones recently announced dates for a 60th anniversary tour of the UK and Europe; the summer series will open in Madrid, Spain on June 1.

Def Leppard release video for new single Kick

Def Leppard have released a video for their new single, “Kick.”

Written by guitarist Phil Collen, the lead track to the band’s forthcoming “Diamond Star Halos” album was the last song written for the project.

“It’s got that glam rock feel, that hand-clap groove, big vocals,” Collen tells Billboard. “It was just a no-brainer. It was not only that it’s got to be on the album, it’s got to be the first single as well.”

“It’s a stadium anthem, and we were about to go into stadiums,”
adds singer Joe Elliott. “We didn’t write it for that reason, but Phil’s always trying to write the next ‘Sugar’ or ‘We Will Rock You’ Or ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.’ We all are, but he actually came up with one, and it’s like, ‘Yeah, we’ve got to do that,’ so now it’s a 15-song record.”

Def Leppard’s twelfth studio set will arrive on May 27, just weeks before the band team up with Motley Crue for a rescheduled US stadium tour.

The project mixes the UK group’s classic sound with a nod to influences like David Bowie, T. Rex, and Mott The Hoople, among others; the title itself references T. Rex’s “Bang a Gong (Get It On).”

“Diamond Star Halos” will be available in multiple configurations, including a Deluxe Edition, 2-LP Vinyl, Digital formats and more.

Red Hot Chili Peppers stream new Unlimited Love single Not The One

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are streaming a new single, “Not The One”, from their forthcoming album, “Unlimited Love.”

The tune follows “Black Summer” and “Poster Child” as the third preview to the band’s twelfth studio album ahead of its release on April 1.

The project resumes a three-decade partnership with producer Rick Rubin, who previously worked on the group’s 1991 breakthrough, “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”, 1999’s “Californication”, 2002’s “By The Way”, and 2006’s “Stadium Arcadium.”

The follow-up to 2016’s “The Getaway” sees the return of guitarist John Frusciante, who rejoined the lineup in 2019 after the outfit parted ways with Josh Klinghoffer.

“Our only goal is to get lost in the music,” says the band. “We spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could. Our antennae attuned to the divine cosmos, we were just so damn grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together, and, once again, try to get better. Days, weeks and months spent listening to each other, composing, jamming freely, and arranging the fruit of those jams with great care and purpose. The sounds, rhythms, vibrations, words and melodies had us enrapt.

“We yearn to shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together. Each of the songs on our new album Unlimited Love, is a facet of us, reflecting our view of the universe. This is our life’s mission. We work, focus, and prepare, so that when the biggest wave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has gifted us a mighty wave and this record is the ride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will launch a global stadium tour in Seville, Spain on June 4.

Neil Young streams 1989 rarity from new box set

Neil Young is streaming audio of the rare 1989 track, “Cocaine Eyes”, as the first preview to the fourth box set in his Official release Series.

The song was first heard on Young’s 1989 EP, “El Dorado”, which was originally released in Australia and Japan; the collection will also feature four albums he recorded for Reprise Records that essentially bookend a 5-album series for Geffen Records and the decade itself: 1980’s “Hawks & Doves”, 1981’s “Reactor”, and 1988’s “This Note’s For You.”

“After the rush of 'Rust Never Sleeps' and the 'Live Rust' albums with Crazy Horse, I settled into a different phase of the musical journey with 'Hawks and Doves' and Crazy Horse's 'Reactor’”, writes the rocker on his Neil Young Archives site. “In the center of these four albums, I made a group of LPs for Geffen Records. Then I happily returned to Reprise with 'This Note's for You' and ‘Eldorado’, the last two albums in this set.”

Due April 29, “Official Release Series Volume 4” will be available on CD and vinyl formats.

Last December, Neil Young And Crazy Horse released a new album, “Barn”, which was recorded in the Rockies with the Le Mobile Recording Studio last year.

Scorpions share lyric video for Rock Believer track Knock ‘Em Dead

The Scorpions are sharing a lyric video for “Knock ‘Em Dead,” a track from the band’s newly-released album, “Rock Believer.”

“This one takes us back, memory lane,” says Klaus Meine. “New York City, the Big Apple. Where we played the first shows in the US around ’79, our mangers used to say before we walked out on stage: ‘Go, knock ‘em dead’ And we did it. Few years later, we rocked Madison Square Garden being the headliner, and I guess the rest is history!”

Co-produced by the Scorpions and Hans-Martin Buff, the group recorded their nineteenth studio record in their hometown of Hannover, Germany during the pandemic.

The Scorpions will begin a rescheduled Las Vegas residency at the Zappos Theater at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on March 26.

You can stream the full “Rock Believer” album in its entirety here.
