Bruce Springsteen debuts Born To Run outtake in concert

Tuesday night in Sunrise, Florida, Bruce Springsteen delivered the live debut of “Linda Let Me Be The One”, an outtake from the “Born To Run” album sessions 40 years ago.

The rocker stopped the band when they hit a bump midway through the performance.

"We f***ed the whole thing up right there!" said Springsteen. "I told you it was the first time!"

“Linda Let Me Be The One” was originally recorded during the “Born To Run” album sessions, which spanned a 14-month period from May 1974 through July 1975.

The song eventually surfaced on the 1998 four-disc compilation, “Tracks”, which consisted of never-before-released songs recorded during the sessions for his many albums, plus a number of single B-sides, as well as demos and alternate versions of already-released material.

Springsteen and The E Street Band are currently playing shows across the US as part of their "High Hopes" world tour.

Eric Clapton heads up J.J. Cale tribute album

the people who listen to what I do, will become intrigued about where I got it from.”

After years admiring JJ Cale’s work and covering several of his songs such as “After Midnight” and “Cocaine”, Clapton finally collaborated with Cale for the first time in his career on the 2006 original album “Road To Escondido.” At the time, Clapton said, “This is the realization of what may have been my last ambition, to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember.”

Cale passed away from a heart attack in La Jolla, California on July 26, 2013 at the age of 74 (read more details here).

AC/DC preparing to record in Vancouver with Brendan O’Brien

AC/DC are preparing to begin recording new music in a Vancouver studio with producer Brendan O’Brien.

ACDCFans.net reports the band’s gear has arrived at the Warehouse Studio in the western Canadian city (see photo above), with studio time booked from May through July.

O'Brien teamed up with the Aussie rockers to produce their 2008 album, “Black Ice”, at the same location.

Following a statement by AC/DC earlier this month that guitarist Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to health issues, singer Brian Johnson confirmed the group planned to enter the Vancouver recording studio as scheduled.

"We are definitely getting together in May in Vancouver," he told the Telegraph. "We're going to pick up some guitars, have a plonk, and see if anybody has got any tunes or ideas. If anything happens, we'll record it."

On April 16, AC/DC issued a statement regarding the band’s status and future in the wake of rumors surrounding Malcolm’s health and their possible retirement.

“After forty years of life dedicated to AC/DC, guitarist and founding member Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to ill health,” posted the band. “Malcolm would like to thank the group’s diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support.”

“In light of this news,” they added, “AC/DC asks that Malcolm and his family’s privacy be respected during this time. The band will continue to make music.”

Van Halen lends hometown support to Los Angeles Kings

Van Halen are lending some hometown support to the Los Angeles Kings as the team heads into a potentially history-making game 7 of their NHL Western Conference opening round playoff series against the San Jose Sharks tonight.

Only the ninth team in NHL history to push a playoff series to a decisive Game 7 after going down 3-0, the Kings will try to become just the fourth to complete the comeback, joining the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1975 New York Islanders and the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers.

Bassist Wolfgang Van Halen tweeted a photo of himself and father Eddie with Kings President of Business Operations – and former team captain – Luc Robitaille on Tuesday.

The image shows the Van Halens each displaying team jerseys with their name on the back, while Robitaille is holding a specially-designed, autographed EVH Wolfgang guitar emblazoned with the Kings logo.

Robitaille – a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame – is the highest scoring left wing in NHL history and the all-time Kings leader in goals scored; he is in his seventh season as Kings President of Business Operations.

Wolfgang is an avid Kings fan who regularly attends home games at the Staples Center.

Reports indicate Van Halen are actively working on a new album, the follow-up to 2012’s “A Different Kind Of Truth.”

Kurt Cobain death-scene note released by Seattle police

Seattle police have released a note found in the wallet of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain at the scene of his death 20 years ago this month.

CBS News reports the note, kept secret until now, promises to add fuel to the pop culture fascination with Cobain and stoke further questions about what role his famously troubled personal life and marriage played in his demise.

When police arrived to find Cobain dead at his Seattle area home on April 8, 1994, from what the King County Medical Examiner would determine was a suicide, the note was taken from his wallet, logged into evidence days later in the Seattle Police Department (SPD) case file, and never made public.

“Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your lawful shredded wife,” he wrote. “even when she’s a bitch with zits and siphoning all yr money for doping and whoring…”

The undated note is written on stationery from the Phoenix Hotel outside of San Francisco and is in stark contrast to Cobain’s presumed suicide note that calls Love a “goddess of a wife who sweats ambition and empathy.”

Earlier this month, Seattle Police released images of Cobain’s death scene in sync with the 20th anniversary of his passing.

Among the photos released by police were images of Cobain’s body on the floor of the living quarters above his garage: one showing his left arm with a hospital ID bracelet around his wrist (Kurt had left an LA rehab center days before), and another displaying an open box of shotgun shells at his feet.

Other images include the rocker’s wallet with ID, a cigar box with drug paraphernalia, and his suicide note, which was found on top of a planter with a pen stuck through it.

An extensive set of photos can be found at the Seattle police website here.

Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Seattle home on April 5, 1994; his body was discovered three days later by an electrician who had arrived to do some work on the property.

Seattle police recently reviewed the closed case due to heightened interest surrounding the 20th anniversary, and confirmed that the case - ruled a suicide in 1994 - will remain shut.

On April 10, Nirvana were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe; other honorees included KISS, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens, Linda Ronstadt, and The E Street Band.

Ozzy Osbourne beer changes name

A Baltimore brewing company has changed the name of one of their house brands, Ozzy Ale, following the receipt of a cease and desist letter from representatives for the Black Sabbath legend last month.

The Baltimore Sun reports The Brewer's Art co-owner Tom Creegan said Tuesday that the company has renamed its Ozzy beer Beazly after the nickname of Mark Barcus, a bartender at the Mount Vernon bar for nearly 17 years.

The company submitted the proposed name change to Osbourne's representatives, Creegan said, and they approved it.

Earlier this month, The Brewer's Art asked customers to submit potential new names for the beer (which will keep the same recipe) and Beazly came out on top.

Ozzy Ale featured a logo of a clenched fist with a tattoo spelling O-Z-Z-Y across the fingers, which is identical to the one the rocker has on his left hand. The cans also featured two bats, one of which is headless and dripping blood – a reference to the infamous January 1982 incident in Des Moines, Iowa when Ozzy bit the head of a bat thrown on stage by a fan, resulting in a series of rabies shots for the singer.

Black Sabbath wrapped up their North American spring tour dates in support of “13” at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles this past Saturday, and will return to the road for shows starting May 29 in Abu Dhabi.

Metallica drummer featured in Carlsberg beer campaign

Metallica’s Lars Ulrich was selected by Danish beer brewery Carlsberg as one of six people to design a bottle as part of the company's Stand Out Collection.

Ulrich chose a picture taken by the legendary photographer Ross Halfin for his design, shot in May 2012 at the Stade de France.

"Lars is the epitome of 'F Janteloven' mantra (referring to The Law of Jante, a pattern of group behavior towards individuals within Scandinavian communities which negatively portrays and criticizes individual success and achievement as unworthy and inappropriate),” says Carlsberg brand manager Rasmus Bendtsen, “and he 100% lives up to the message that is the whole idea behind the Stand Out Collection. Lars even suggested that we change the name of 'Carlsberg' to 'Larsberg'. He is a great partner."

The beer company has issued a promotional video featuring Lars, shot in Danish.

Metallica will bring their “By Request” concert series to Europe for shows starting May 28 at Sonisphere Finland in Helsinki, Finland.

Iron Maiden’s Trooper Beer adds new bottle size

Iron Maiden’s Trooper Beer brand has added a new bottle size to the lineup.

UK’s Robinsons Brewery have announced that Trooper will be available in a 330ml glass bottle for the first time.

“We've listened to thirsty Trooper fans all over the world and are pleased to unveil our new bottle - the same great Trooper taste but in a smaller package,” said the brewer. “The 330ml bottle will allow us to get Trooper out to more of you, as some pubs and clubs don't carry the larger 500ml version.”

“The smaller bottle,” they added, “will be available as single bottles or as multi-packs of 4, and should start appearing on shelves soon.”

Last month, Robinsons revealed that Trooper beer had sold 3.5 million pints without the company spending a penny on marketing.

Launched in the UK in the spring of 2013, the beverage is named after the classic Iron Maiden song of the same
name. Trooper was personally designed and developed as a top quality Premium British Beer by Iron Maiden vocalist and real ale enthusiast Bruce Dickinson with Robinsons' Head Brewer Martyn Weeks.

Iron Maiden will kick off their 2014 live dates May 27 in Barcelona, Spain.

The summer tour will round off the band’s Maiden England World Tour, which will end with a headline performance at the UK Sonisphere Festival in July as part of the 40th Anniversary celebrations at Knebworth Park.

By the end of the tour, the band will have played 102 shows in 32 countries to well over two million fans since starting in the USA in June 2012.

Former Queensryche singer comments on band name settlement

Former Queensryche singer Geoff Tate has offered his first public comments on the newly-announced out-of-court settlement over rights to the band’s name, following a two-year-long legal dispute with his former bandmates.

The settlement sees original Queensryche members Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Michael Wilton (along with recent additions Todd LaTorre and Parker Lundgren) move forward with rights to the band name, while Tate keep the exclusive rights to perform the group’s ‘Operation: Mindcrime I’ and ‘II’ in their entirety as a unique performance.

“I think it's great,” Tate tells Billboard of the outcome. “I'm very happy that it's over and done and we can all move on with our lives. It's been a long, bitter two years, I'll tell you. I'm glad it's over.”

“We've been trying to work something out for months and months and months, and it's like any kind of lawsuit, it's just slow going,” he says of the process. “But finally I think the realization that going to court over the whole thing was going to be a huge nightmare and huge financial mess for everybody that [we] really started to look at it more seriously and realistically.”

While hesitant to discuss anything outside of the joint statement released Monday by both parties (read it here), Tate does explain the “Operation Mindcrime” performance clause.

“It's pretty similar to the Pink Floyd settlement where one group got the name and Roger Waters got ‘The Wall.’ It's very similar to that,” he says. “I retain ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ and everything revolving around that, and they got the name, so it's a win-win for everybody.”

Tate will do a brief Queensryche “farewell” tour this summer with a series of previously scheduled shows before launching a solo career.

Before Tate parted ways with Queensryche in 2012, there was a series of reports of tension within the group, including an alleged incident backstage in Sao Paulo, Brazil on April 14. Reports suggested that Tate secretly overheard band members discussing plans to fire him, which led to an alleged altercation at soundcheck, with Tate pushing Wilton to the floor before pointing a knife at drummer Rockenfield. Security staff from the venue reportedly had to separate them.

Video from the concert later that evening surfaced showing Tate spitting at Rockenfield during the show – see that at 3:59 in the video below.

Scorpions drummer jailed for alleged misconduct at Dubai airport

Scorpions drummer James Kottack (pictured above, far right) has been jailed in the United Arab Emirates after being convicted for alleged misconduct at the Dubai airport.

The National reports Kottack will spend a month in jail after he was convicted Tuesday of insulting Islam, flashing his middle finger at Muslim passengers at an airport and consuming alcohol.

Kottak reportedly confirmed that he drank five glasses of wine on a flight from Moscow to Dubai while making his way to Bahrain to perform at the country’s Formula One Grand Prix on April 5 when the incident happened on the evening of April 3.

The rocker was with a friend when he said he took a wrong turn and entered the transit hall. “We wanted to wait for the rest of our friends but, mistakenly, ended up at the transit hall,” Kottak told police. There he was arrested for being drunk and, after that, he was seen getting angry and swearing.

At the sight of Pakistani and Muslim passengers, witnesses said Kottak started swearing and talking about “non-educated Muslims” before he flashed his middle finger at passengers. Police said he also lowered his trousers and showed people his behind.

Kottack – who has been in police custody since April 3 – admitted to drinking alcohol but has refused the other two charges.

At Dubai Court of Misdemeanours on Tuesday, his lawyer said that his client was innocent and that the witnesses must be misunderstood. “Their testimonies are contradictory, your honour,” said Hamid Al Khazraji.

Kottack was sentenced to one month in jail and was fined 2,000 dirhams (approximately US $545) for drinking alcohol without a license.

Read a more detailed report of the alleged incident at The National here.

As a result of his detainment, Kottack missed The Scorpions’ April 5th performance at the Grand Prix event; the group brought in drummer Mark Cross (Tainted Nation, Firewind, Outloud, Helloween, Metallium) to fill in for the show.

Earlier this year, the band released “MTV Unplugged - Scorpions Live In Athens”, a package compiled from three concerts in Athens, Greece at the city’s Lycabettus Theatre last fall.

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble inducted into Austin City Limits Hall Of Fame

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble were among the inaugural inductees into the newly-announced Austin City Limits Hall Of Fame at a ceremony in the Texas city this past Saturday.

Culture Map Austin reports the invitation-only event was filled with special performances and standing ovations for performers and honorees. The Hall of Fame’s first class of inductees included Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, famed UT football coach Darrell Royal and show creator Bill Arhos.

Willie Nelson was the first inductee honored, with an introduction by Texas native Matthew McConaughey. A live performance followed that saw Nelson joined on stage by Lyle Lovett and Emmylou Harris.

Honors for Royal and Arhos followed before the induction of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble.

Double Trouble’s Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon and Reese Wynans shared the stage with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Mike Farris, Doyle Bramhall II, Robert Randolph, Eric Zapata and Buddy Guy. Stevie Ray’s brother Jimmie, who is on tour in Australia, appeared in a video honoring his younger brother.

Rounding out a night of incredible music, Nelson, Lovett and Nelson’s son, Lukas, joined everyone on stage for the grand finale, the title track to Vaughan’s 1983 debut, “Texas Flood.”

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's two epic ACL appearances in 1984 and 1989 are among the most iconic performances in the PBS show’s history. The guitar legend and his band released four influential and acclaimed studio albums and a live record before his untimely passing in a helicopter crash in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin on August 27, 1990 at the age of 35.

PHOTO: Van Halens attend Black Sabbath show in Los Angeles

Black Sabbath wrapped up their North American spring tour dates in support of “13” at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Saturday, and the band were visited by Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen at the show.

“Had an amazing time last night at the Sabbath show”, Wolfgang posted on instagram, along with a photo of the three Van Halens hanging with Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi backstage.

The bassist also posted an instagram photo from the concert, writing, “Wow. #Sabbath was mind-blowing tonight.”

Long before Wolfgang was born (in 1991), Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath on their 1978 tour; VH were on the road in support of their groundbreaking self-titled debut and Sabbath were supporting their “Never Say Die!” release and 10th anniversary.

Eddie and Iommi have maintained a friendship ever since.

35th anniversary of Van Halen II featured on In The Studio

The 35th anniversary of Van Halen’s second album, “Van Halen II”, is featured on the latest episode of North American rock radio series In The Studio.

Brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen and original VH bassist Michael Anthony join host Redbeard to talk about the the group’s creative process and growing personality issues inside the band as they created a blueprint for 1980s hard rock.

The follow-up to Van Halen’s groundbreaking 1978 debut was recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood less than a week after the end of the band’s first world tour.

The album’s lead single, “Dance The Night Away”, delivered Van Halen their first Top 20 US hit, reaching No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Inspired by Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way", it was the
only track written completely in the studio. David Lee Roth originally wanted to name it "Dance, Lolita, Dance", but Eddie came up with the final title.

Supported by radio airplay and constant touring, the album was certified gold (500,000 copies) in the US just 10 days after its release, and platinum (1 million) a month later.

The project eventually reached No. 6 on the US Billboard 200 album chart and went on to sell more than 5 million copies in the States alone.

Tesla announce North American release date for new album

California rockers Tesla will release their new album, “Simplicity”, on June 10 in North America.

The news follows the previously announced European release date of June 6.

The group’s seventh all-original studio album was produced by the band with some help from producer Tom Zutaut.

The first new song off the new album, "Taste My Pain", was released last summer digitally via iTunes and Amazon.

"I must say that this new Tesla album is really gonna be awesome,” says guitarist Frank Hannon. “We went in more prepared with the songs and ideas way more than [2008’s] 'Forever More', and the style is pure Tesla back to our roots. I truly believe you guys are gonna love it!"

"The opening track is called 'MP3'," continues Hannon, "and starts off with an opus intro that orchestrates into a heavy slow groove with lyrics about technology and how we miss simplicity, vinyl albums, family values...and has a heavy-ass riff! Then we segue into a rock and roll song called 'Ricochet' that talks about Uncle Ted... [I] can't wait to play this stuff live!”

Queensyrche members reach settlement over rights issues

Following a two-year-long legal dispute, the members of Queensryche have reached an out of court settlement over rights to the band’s name.

Both sides have issued the following joint statement:

"We wanted to let Queensrÿche fans around the world know that an amicable settlement has been reached between Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield, Michael Wilton and Geoff Tate with regard to the future of the Queensrÿche name.

According to the agreement, original Queensrÿche members Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Michael Wilton along with recent members, Todd LaTorre and Parker Lundgren, will now be the sole entity recording and touring as Queensrÿche, performing selections from their entire musical catalog that spans over 30 years of material.

Original Queensrÿche lead singer Geoff Tate will continue to record, perform and pursue a variety of other creative endeavors and, as part of the agreement, will have the exclusive rights to perform ‘Operation: Mindcrime I’ and ‘II’ in their entirety as a unique performance.

Both sides wish each other well and are excited about what the future holds. We want to thank the fans for standing beside us through this ordeal and look forward to sharing our music with you for years to come."

The Grammy-nominated, progressive heavy-metal band - which has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide since the early 1980s - split into two separate, acrimonious camps nearly two years ago. A lawsuit resulted in a King County Superior Court ruling that each side could use the same name until the case went to trial or was settled.

Both versions of the group confused the rights issues further last year when they each released new albums with references to the original brand.

“Geoff Tate’s Queensryche” issued “Frequency Unknown”, while the Todd La Torre-led version of the band put out a self-titled record simply billed as “Queensryche.”

According to Wilton, the agreement calls for Queensrÿche corporate assets to be evenly divided among himself, Jackson, Rockenfield and Tate. Both sides say they are relieved to settle the dispute and look forward to moving on.

“It’s the rebirth of Queensrÿche and the way it used to be,” Wilton told the Seattle Times. “We’re rebuilding the Queensrÿche name.”

Tate will do a brief Queensryche “farewell” tour this summer before launching a new chapter his career.

Motley Crue confirm title of farewell song

Last week, producer James Michael revealed that Motley Crue are in the middle of recording the final song of their career, and now the band have confirmed the title of the track is “All Bad Things Must Come To An End.”

"It's probably about half finished,” guitarist Mick Mars tells Guitar World in a new June 2014 cover story. “We have to wait for Vince [Neil] to sing it, and then I'll do my soloing and ear candy all over it and stuff like that."

The new song’s title was featured on the poster for the band’s farewell tour, issued alongside a press conference in January announcing the trek.

"As we know, the Crue is getting ready to hang it up. And we discussed for a while doing a final song," Michael revealed at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in Los Angles on April 23. "And that's a tall order. There
was a lot of pressure on us to make sure that we did it right and that we celebrated everything that they were known for. So I think we've done it. I'm actually tracking drums with Tommy [Lee] tomorrow. And it's an outstanding song. I think it's gonna be an absolutely amazing way to go out swinging."

Last month, Mars confirmed the group will release the new single to support the launch of the farewell tour.

Motley Crue last released new music in 2012, when they issued the single “Sex” to promote the band’s summer tour with KISS. The group’s last full album was 2008’s “Saints Of Los Angeles.”

After more than three decades together, Motley Crue’s “The Final Tour” will kick off July 2 in Grand Rapids, Michigan with guest Alice Cooper.

Robert Plant says Led Zeppelin will never play live again

Robert Plant says Led Zeppelin will never play live again.

The singer revealed the news while promoting the forthcoming expanded reissues of the band’s first three albums this June.

Plant tells the BBC that the chances of the group performing live again are “zero.”

A reunited Led Zeppelin – with drummer Jason Bonham sitting in for his late father, John – last performed when they headlined a December 10, 2007 concert at London’s O2 Arena as a tribute concert for friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The event was eventually released in 2012 as “Celebraton Day.”

Guitarist Jimmy Page responded to the BBC’s question about future live shows by saying, “I'm sure people would love to hear it. I'm not the one to be asking, I don't sing.”

Due June 2 (June 3 in North America), the group are releasing expanded reissues of “Led Zeppelin I”, “Led Zeppelin II” and “Led Zeppelin III.”

Deluxe editions of the group’s first three albums are the first projects announced as part of an extensive reissue program that will see all nine of the band’s studio albums reissued in chronological order, each remastered by Page.

The reissues will be available in a variety of formats – learn more details here.

FX series The Americans to feature new Pete Townshend song

A clip of a new Pete Townshend song, “It Must Be Done”, can be seen in a preview of this Wednesday’s (April 30) episode of the FX series The Americans.

Billboard reports The Who guitarist’s first original song for a television show was written with the show's composer Nathan Barr.

The song appears in a scene for which it was not written. Townshend and Barr initially had the music playing under a scene involving a car being shadowed, which did not fit after the scene was edited. It was moved to a scene that is being described as "sex and murder."

"It's really striking," Townshend said of the final placement.

The guitarist explained his approach to the tune and how it would mesh with the show’s storyline.

“I wanted to keep it very simple,” said Townshend. “Here's this couple whose whole life is about duty, duty without honor, duty without explanation. There are no accolades. They're not living a lie but doing things they find hard to do. Everybody has a part of their life that's difficult to explain. For me it's why am I in the Who?”

As for The Who, on June 9 (June 10 in North America), the band will release “Quadrophenia: Live In London”, a new package recorded in concert at Wembley Arena performing their 1973 classic album in its entirety on the final night of their 40th anniversary tour that celebrated the record’s original release.

Filmed on July 8, 2013, the Quadrophenia performance was followed a set of the band’s greatest hits for the sold-out crowd.
