Tenacious D cover The Last In Line for Ronnie James Dio tribute album

Tenacious D recorded “The Last In Line” for the new Ronnie James Dio tribute album, “This Is Your Life” (due April 1), and the song is now available for streaming.

Tenacious D’s Jack Black and Kyle Gass are longtime fans of the legendary singer: the pair recorded the track, “Dio”, on their 2001 self-titled debut – Ronnie countered by including the guys to the video for his 2002 single, “Push.” Dio himself also appeared in the D’s 2006 film, “The Pick Of Destiny”, and guested on the song, “Kickapoo”, from the companion soundtrack album.

“Dio was the master,” says Black. “The Pavarotti of heavy metal vocalists. Soaring melodies and a lion’s roar to match. He was also one of the coolest guys I’ve ever had the honor of meeting. No one could touch his brilliance, on or off the stage.”

“It’s hard not to pick a great Dio track, but this one appealed to us,” adds Gass. “Recording the track was a blast. Our electric guitarist John Konesky shredded a solo. I said, ‘That’s pretty good, but let’s try out my recorder.’ Lo and behold it shredded even more and added a unique element to the track. Dio obviously has been a
major influence and inspiration for the D. His performance in The Pick of Destiny was a magical moment for us, and we’ll always miss him. Rock on, Dio.”

In addition to Tenacious D, “This Is Your Life” features newly-recorded covers of the singer’s work with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio by Metallica, Motorhead, the Scorpions, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Corey Taylor Anthrax, Halestorm and others.

Proceeds from “This Is Your Life” will benefit The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund, co-founded by Wendy Dio. The charity is dedicated to supporting cancer-prevention research, raising awareness and educating the public about the vital importance of early detection and prevention when dealing with this deadly disease.

Dio died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010 at the age of 67.

Tom Petty reveals new album details

Tom Petty will release a new album, “Hypnotic Eye”, this summer.

“I knew I wanted to do a rock ‘n’ roll record,” Petty reveals in a new interview with Rolling Stone. “We hadn’t made a straight, hard-rocking record, from beginning to end, in a long time.”

Petty’s first album with The Heartbreakers in four years (since 2010’s “Mojo”) signals a return to the sound and feel of his first two records, 1976’s self-titled debut and 1978’s “You’re Gonna Get It!”

“That’s what [long-time guitarist] Mike [Campbell] said: ‘You sing like you did on the first two albums,’” explained Petty. “Maybe this album does sound like that. But it’s that band 30 years later.”

Writing material for the 11-track record, co-produced by Petty, Campbell and Ryan Ulyate, took place periodically over the past three years. “You must get the songs,” says Tom. “It takes to write 10 or 11 really good songs.”

Petty says he will tour this year in support of the project.

Pink Floyd: Flaming Lips releasing Dark Side Of The Moon companion album

The Flaming Lips have just announced a March 31st release of “The Flaming Side Of The Moon”, a project they have billed as a companion piece to the original 1973 Pink Floyd album, “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, and a stream of the project can be heard below.

“Listeners are encouraged to listen to the new Lips album while listening to Dark Side at the same time,” explained the band. “Flaming Side Of The Moon was also carefully crafted to sync up perfectly with the 1939 film, The Wizard Of Oz. For ideal listening conditions, fans are encouraged to seek out the original Alan Parsons’ engineered quadraphonic LP mix of Dark Side, but it will work with the album on any format.”

A limited edition 100 vinyl copies will reportedly be distributed to friends and family of The Flaming Lips.

No further details, including a tracklisting, have been announced.

The project marks the second full release of a Dark Side-related project by the group, following 2009’s “The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side Of The Moon”, a collaborative track-for-track reimagining of Pink Floyd's seminal album.

KISS movie update

Director Alan G. Parker continues work on the KISS film, “You Wanted The Best... You Got The Best”, and has issued an update on the project.

“As of this week, we now have the first rough assembly of the movie... it runs 2 hours 37 minutes (ironically the exact same length as my last movie!) and is still full of time coded archive, or footage from my vast bootleg collection,” explains Parker. “We will fix a date for Paul & Gene to view it in LA... Thus far the film as only been viewed by a small handful of friends from within the industry, other Producers/Directors etc... But they all love it... And are saying it's my best work to date.”

“We have un-earthed some great archive, and found a few masters, where masters were thought to no longer exist,” he continues. “One of my favourites being the 1976 first UK trip, Granada TV had the original broadcast master, which looks incredible... I'm very proud of the movie.”

“If Paul & Gene both like it,” adds Parker, “we will replace archive with masters, get some of pictures from the KISS office and put the film up for picture grading and final Dolby sound mix... Under my guidance.”

The director also revealed a possible timetable for the film’ release, saying “We would look to release to cinema in September/October 2014.”

Parker’s credits include “Never Mind The Sex Pistols”, “Who Killed Nancy”, “Rebel Truce: The History of The Clash” and “Monty Python: Almost The Truth”.

As for KISS, the band’s original lineup will be inducted into the 2014 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame at a ceremony in New York on April 10, along with Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt.

Black Sabbath confirm Hyde Park show

Following days of teasing by event organizers, Black Sabbath have formally announced that they will headline the opening night of the British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park on July 4.

The band will be joined by a lineup that includes Soundgarden, Faith No More, Motorhead, Soulfly and Wolfmother, among others.

“The first time I came to London I didn’t have a pot to piss in,” says Ozzy Osbourne. “I spent the advance I got for the first album on a new pair of shoes and some Brut aftershave. Almost 50 years on, we’re doing a bit better for ourselves, so I may even splash out on some new aftershave before taking to the stage at Hyde Park. It’s the most beautiful park in London and its gates have been opened to so many legends in the past. We’re beyond honored
to be allowed to put on a show – and we hope that Royals will enjoy it.”

Tickets for the show will go on sale Friday, April 4 at 9 AM local time.

Already confirmed for the 10-day event, which runs July 4 – 13, are McBusted (July 6) and Neil Young & Crazy Horse (July 12).

Black Sabbath will resume their “13” world tour on Tuesday in New York, the first date in a series of North American shows that includes a 3-week run across Canada.

Black Sabbath resume rehearsals for spring tour

Black Sabbath have resumed rehearsals as they prepare to return to the road to continue their “13” world tour.

Shows start up again March 31 in New York; the spring trek across North America includes a 3-week Canadian tour that begins April 3 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and wraps April 22 in Edmonton, Alberta, followed by a Los Angeles stop at the Hollywood Bowl on April 26.

“It’s really good to be back in rehearsals with the band, we’re just polishing things up having not played live for over three months,” says guitarist Tony Iommi. “Must have been all the shows last year because I remembered the songs better than I thought I would.”

“We’re all hoping it’s not going to be too cold in Canada,” Iommi continued, “my memories of recording ‘Never Say Die’ in Toronto are mostly about the weather! It makes me appreciate all of you that can live and survive in the cold (or heat come to that), anyway, we’ll be doing our best to raise the temperature every night. To finish up this part of our tour we’ll be going from the cold of Edmonton to outdoors in Los Angeles, and that’ll be strange.”

In sync with the spring tour, the band will release “The Complete Studio Albums (1970-1978)”, an 8-disc box set featuring their 1970s catalogue, on April 15.

The package was released on iTunes in January, and a variation of the set (which also included DVDs) was first issued in 2004.

The box set contains all of the studio albums Black Sabbath recorded for Warner Bros. Records during the 1970s, including its iconic, eponymous debut (1970), the multi-platinum landmark "Paranoid" (1970), the platinum albums "Master Of Reality" (1971), "Vol. 4" (1972), and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" (1973), as well as the gold albums "Sabotage" (1975), "Technical Ecstasy" (1976), and "Never Say Die!" (1978).

VIDEO: Van Halen – Upgraded 1978 and 1979 live footage surfaces

** UPDATE 0412-14

The Van Halen footage originally used for this story has been removed from YouTube by the source, so it is no longer available. Due to the high demand by hennemusic readers to see vintage live VH, we have accessed additional footage to present here. Unfortunately, the 2010 upgrade of the 1978 show and the 2012 upgrade of the 1979 show is of a lower quality than the 2014 upgrade, but of historical significance, nonetheless.

** UPDATE 0115-15

Some of the upgraded footage resurfaced recently and has been re-added to the story - including "Eruption" from the 1978 show and "Light Up The Sky" from the 1979 concert

Upgraded, vintage concert footage of Van Halen live in Fresno, California over two shows in 1978 and 1979 has surfaced online.

According to the source, the material from the Selland Arena concerts on the band’s first two world tours has been remastered frame by frame in uncompressed HD “from my original Fuji single-8 films.”

The September 22, 1978 footage features clips of set-opener “On Fire” from the band’s self-titled debut, and the encore of “Bottoms Up” – 6 months before it would appear on the band’s second album.

The March 25, 1979 concert was the opening night of the group’s world tour in support of the newly-released “Van Halen II” album, including clips of show-opener “Light Up The Sky” and mid-set tune, “On Fire.”

Partial clips of all material include images and audio from the concerts.

The footage has been available online for years; an upgraded version was posted in 2010, but the latest videos are the highest-quality, direct-from-source material to surface to date.

The source filmed about 25 minutes of each concert, so as fans wait for footage of full songs to appear, it’s worth noting that the complete sets from either show won’t be available via this source.

Metallica have released behind-the-scenes and performance footage from their March 20th concert in Lima, Peru.

On May 16, Metallica will team up with the Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants for the 2nd annual Metallica Night at AT&T Park, when the team hosts the Miami Marlins.

AUDIO: Corey Taylor covers Rainbow In The Dark for Ronnie James Dio tribute album

Slipknot/Stone Sour vocalist Corey Taylor recorded “Rainbow In The Dark” for the forthcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album, “This Is Your Life” (due April 1), and the song is now available for streaming.

Taylor is joined by Steel Panther guitarist Satchel, Stone Sour drummer Roy Mayorga, and touring buddies Jason Christopher and Christian Martucci for the classic tune, which was originally featured on 1983’s “Holy Diver.”

“Ronnie was the most natural singer I have ever witnessed,” says Taylor. “He could do anything,
hit any note, make any audience lose their minds. He was one of the greatest and I’m so happy I got to see him live. ‘Rainbow in the Dark’ was the first Dio song I really loved to death – just a powerful, high-energy hard rock song that was so good I wished I’d written it. When I was asked to be a part of this album, I knew there was only one track I wanted to record and luckily I got it. I only hope I did it justice. Having had the privilege of meeting Ronnie before he passed, I hope he knows how much I loved him for who and what he was: One of the greatest.”

In addition to Taylor, “This Is Your Life” features newly-recorded covers of the singer’s work with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio by Metallica, Motorhead, the Scorpions, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Tenacious D, Anthrax, Halestorm and others.

Rolling Stones: L’Wren Scott leaves $9 million estate to Mick Jagger

Fashion designer L’Wren Scott left her estate – valued at $9 million – to her longtime partner, Mick Jagger, according to the New York Post.

Although reports indicated Scott’s design business, LS Fashion Ltd., was $5.9 million in the red, the paper says her will bequeathed her $8 million condo, which she owned under a corporate name, to the Rolling Stones frontman…as well as $1 million in other valuables.

“I give all my jewelry, clothing, household furniture and furnishings, personal automobiles and other tangible articles of a personal nature … to Michael Philip Jagger,” Scott’s will says, according to court papers reviewed by The Post Wednesday.

Def Leppard singer shares new album update

Def Leppard recently regrouped in Dublin, Ireland to write music for a new album, and now singer Joe Elliott is sharing an update on the band’s progress and plans for the project.

“We just came out of a writing session in February with 12 new songs,” Elliott tells Billboard. “We’ve got this [KISS summer] tour, then we’ll finish the album after that. We’ve never been this busy really.”

Elliott says the band are taking full control of the album, their first since 2008’s “Songs From The Sparkle Lounge.”

“Def Leppard is producing the album, because when it comes down to it, every producer that we ever think of and talk about falls at least number two behind Mutt Lange,” he explains. “We’re not gonna get Mutt, but we worked with him for 11 years in a studio, so we know how it works. Queen made their own records. For the state of the music industry and the place that we hold in it, if we’re even in it, cause I’ve always thought we were
in our own little universe, there’s no need. If we have a hit, it won’t matter who produced it… It’ll be down to the song. And we were determined to write all these songs on our own and what we’ve got going so far sounds incredible.”

Def Leppard and KISS will launch a North American tour on June 23 in West Valley City, Utah – for more details, click here.

Elliott is currently promoting “The Further Adventures Of…”, the forthcoming new album by his Mott The Hoople-inspired side project, Down N Outz.

The group were formed specifically to open a series of 2009 reunion shows for Mott The Hoople at London’s Hammersmith Odeon.

Due April 21 (April 22 in North America), “The Further Adventures Of…” is the band’s third project, following 2010’s debut album, “My Re-Generation”, and the “Live At Hammersmith Apollo” DVD recorded during the 2009 shows.

Black Sabbath to headline BST Hyde Park Festival

Black Sabbath will headline the British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park in July.

While fans await the formal announcement, event organizers have posted a teaser image of Sabbath on stage with the caption, “Paranoid that you're not getting enough rock this summer? Well that's all about to change…”

Sabbath are rumoured to headline the festival’s opening night on Friday, July 4.

Already confirmed for the 10-day event, which runs July 4 – 13, are McBusted (July 6) and Neil Young & Crazy Horse (July 12).

More headliners are to be announced.

Black Sabbath resume their “13” world tour with a series of North American shows starting March 31 in New York.

On April 15, the band will release “The Complete Studio Albums (1970-1978)”, an 8-disc box set featuring their 1970s catalog.

KISS: Ace Frehley announces new album

Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley will release a new album, “Space Invader”, on June 24.

Frehley’s first new solo project 2009’s “Anomaly” will include at least nine new original songs as well as a cover of “The Joker” by The Steve Miller Band.

“Life on Earth has been very good to me, and the body of work I’ve created over the years has withstood the test of time,” says Ace. “Today I see no obstacles before me and my creativity has never been more fine tuned. Growing up in an Alien world has enhanced my senses and allowed me to succeed where others would have failed. The best is yet to come!”

Widely known as the original “Space Ace" and founding guitarist for 16 years (over two tenures) of KISS,
Frehley is demonstrably the most popular original member. In addition to having the best-selling solo album career (vintage or current) among the original foursome, Frehley’s 1978 self-titled album went on to sell over one million copies and produced the only Top 40 single, “New York Groove”, from any of the legendary KISS solo albums. The massive hit was most recently featured in an episode of cult show Entourage and was also KISS’ second bestselling download in 2012, beating such KISS Army anthems as “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”, “Beth” and “Calling Dr. Love” even after 36 years.

Since departing from KISS, Frehley went on to release four more solo albums and one live EP.

On April 10, Frehley and the original lineup of KISS will be inducted into the 2014 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame at a ceremony in New York, along with Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt.

On April 23, Ace will also participate in the 2014 Revolver Golden Gods Awards show at the Club Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Frehley will present the Dimebag Darrell "Best Guitarist" Award alongside label-mate Zakk Wylde.

“It’s exciting to finally be part of the Golden Gods, awards and an honor to be part of any Dimebag memorial award,” Ace adds. “He was a friend, and I know everyone misses him, as do I.”
