Eddie Vedder joined by Benmont Tench for Tom Petty classics in Los Angeles

Eddie Vedder was joined by Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench for a pair of Tom Petty classics during his February 25 show at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles, CA.

On the road in support of his new album, “Earthling”, the Pearl Jam rocker welcomed Tench to the stage – according to setlist.fm – for a version of Petty’s 1996 “Echo” track, “Room At The Top”, and later, the 1981 smash, “The Waiting.”

The keyboardist was also on board for “Long Way” – the 2022 album’s lead single which features Tench, as well as Pearl Jam’s “Better Man”, and covers of Marvin Gaye’s “Baby Don’t You Do It” and George Harrison’s “Isn’t It A Pity.”

The Los Angeles event was one of two shows that Vedder rescheduled about 10 days after their original dates due to a COVID-19 outbreak in his touring party; the month-long series wrapped up in San Diego, CA on February 27.

“Earthling” recently debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Current Albums Sales, Album Sales and Rock Albums charts.

David Bowie premieres 2000 performance video of Toy album tracks

David Bowie’s social media team are premiering previously-unreleased video of a 2000 performance of a pair of vintage tracks that were re-recorded for the recently-available “Toy” album.

The music icon can be seen delivering two mid-1960s songs – “I Dig Everything” and “The London Boys” – live at the BBC Radio Theatre, with the band that played his Glastonbury set that same year, following which they entered a New York City studio to record the “Toy” album.

While video footage of both tunes was cut from the original BBC broadcast; audio of twenty tracks from the appearance was included in the 2021 release of the “David Bowie 5: Brilliant Adventure (1992–2001)” box set.

The previously-unreleased “Toy” – which features new interpretations of songs Bowie first recorded between 1964-1971 – was referenced for years as the singer’s “lost album” before its official release in the latest box set and as the “Toy (Box)”, an expanded package that deliver 38 tracks and includes the original studio album alongside a collection of alternative mixes and versions, and a set of stripped-down, acoustic-based mixes.

You can stream the “Toy (Box)” package in its entirety here.

Queen bring Bohemian Rhapsody to the movies on The Greatest

Queen bring their biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, to the big screen on the latest episode of the band’s 50th anniversary video series The Greatest.

First announced in September 2010 as a film “focused on the band’s formative years leading up to Queen’s appearance at the historic Live Aid concert, 1985, when the band famously took the event by storm”, audiences would have to wait until October 2018 to see the Queen story transferred to the cinema screen.

“We were a little reluctant in the beginning because, you know, it's difficult to make a film that would do Freddie justice,” says Brian May. “And what happened over the years, because it was suggested to us a lot, what happened was that we realized if we didn't get involved, then somebody else would do it, and then you wouldn't be able to protect Freddie's kind of legacy.”

“I think a lot of people, they think about Freddie, and the media tend to think, ‘Oh, flamboyant’, whatever, you know?,”
explains Roger Taylor. “And they remember him for other things, and they tend to forget that he was a brilliant musician. I think the film does pay good attention to the fact that Freddie was a real, real great musician.

Sacha Baren Cohen was initially confirmed to play Mercury with Dexter Fletcher as director, but issues surfaced with both that stalled the development of the project until Bryan Singer came aboard to direct with Rami Malek set to portray the iconic frontman.

“Casting Rami in the role of Freddie absolutely blew us away, the first time we met him,” recalls May. “We kind of saw Freddie in him and we could sense his passion, and everything was put together around that, I guess.”

“At first I thought it would be so daunting to be that extremely liberated, audacious performer that he was on stage who transcended everything about music,”
says Malek. “And so I thought, ‘OK, there's a human being there that I could connect with’. Now, I just wanted to discover how that human being with all those eccentricities and confusing thoughts could be so daring and bold on stage.”

“We didn't get to see him in full ‘shtick’ until that first moment when the cameras rolled on Live Aid,”
May remembers. “We both went down to see it, and it was, I don't know what the word is, it just sent shivers up your spine because the recreation was so perfect of the venue and everything about it, including the backstage. And then these guys come on and they are us. And they plunged in the deep end. That was like the pinnacle performance they had to pull off right at the beginning of the shooting, which is tough, but they had it down.”

“They got very close to us,”
agrees Taylor, “I mean, visually and as actors, and so which made it particularly uncanny to watch for us. After a couple of viewings you just start to completely believe ‘ah, that was us…oh no, it’s not. It’s other people.’ But, phenomenal.”

Singer was fired in 2017 with only a few weeks left of filming, after which Fletcher returned to oversee the project to its completion; industry guidelines dictated that Singer would get the final Director credit with Fletcher receiving an Executive Producer credit.

The “Bohemian Rhapsody” movie was released in 2018 and took the worldwide box office by storm, setting a new record for the highest-grossing biographical film of all time at over $911 million worldwide.

The project won four Oscars, including Best Actor for Rami Malek, who also received the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA awards for his portrayal of Freddie.

The film’s official soundtrack reached top ten positions in twenty-five countries during 2018/2019, becoming one of Queen’s top-selling albums in almost 40 years and their second-highest album chart placing ever in the US.

Scorpions release video for new Rock Believer single

The Scorpions are sharing a video for “When You Know (Where You Come From)”, the latest single from the band’s newly-released album, “Rock Believer.”

The clip surfaces in sync with the February 25 arrival of the group’s nineteenth studio set, which they recorded in their hometown of Hannover, Germany during the pandemic.

The project marks the first appearance of Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee on record with the band since his addition to the lineup in 2016.

"The new material sees us return to our roots,” says Klaus Meine. “We simply wanted to reactivate the original Scorpions DNA – great riffs, strong melodies. We tried to transport that live feel to the studio with all five of us playing in one room again at last. Having Mikkey Dee in the band is like a shot of fresh energy and real fun."

The Scorpions will return to the stage next month when they host a rescheduled Las Vegas residency at the Zappos Theater at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Jimi Hendrix estate streams 1968 Chicago concert

The Jimi Hendrix estate is streaming audio of a 1968 concert in Chicago, IL.

The live recording captures the The Jimi Hendrix Experience at the city’s Chicago Coliseum on December 1 as the trio deliver a 9-song performance – opening with a cover of the 1964 Howlin’ Wolf classic, “Killing Floor”, and closing with their 1967 hit, “Purple Haze.”

“Please note that this is not a professionally recorded concert and the sound quality is sub-par,” explains the estate. “Although rough sounded, this performance is provided for your enjoyment and to help present further context into Jimi Hendrix's incredible performance legacy.”

The documentary “Music, Money, Madness . . . Jimi Hendrix In Maui” is a finalist at the upcoming 2022 Grammy Awards, where it is nominated in the Best Music Film category, recognized alongside projects on Bo Burnham, David Byrne, Billie Eilish, and a Summer Of Soul documentary.

The 64th Grammy Awards will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 3.

Keith Richards streams Demon from Main Offender 30th anniversary reissue

Keith Richards is streaming a lyric video for “Demon”, a track featured on the forthcoming expanded 30th anniversary reissue of his 1992 album, “Main Offender.”

Due March 18, the 2022 release includes a remastered version of the studio record by original producer and drummer Steve Jordan, who also mixed and produced the bonus concert recording “Winos Live In London ‘92”, which captures the group live at the Town & Country Club in Kentish Town.

The Rolling Stones guitarist regrouped with his touring band, the X-Pensive Winos, for his second solo effort, with a lineup that features Jordan, guitarist Waddy Wachtel, bassist Charley Drayton, keyboard player Ivan Neville, singer Sarah Dash, and backing vocalists Bernard Fowler and Babi Floyd.

“If I hadn’t have taken the Winos on the road, this record would probably have been totally different than it is,” Richards explains. “I tried to avoid making too much sense on this record because to me that ambiguity and mystery, and a little provocation to make you think, is something far more powerful and more important than just wagging your finger and saying, ‘I know what he’s saying don’t do this, do that.’ If you’re a musician, silence is your canvas and you never want to fill-in the whole thing because then you’ve just covered it all … One of the most interesting parts about music is where you don’t play.”

The “Main Offender” 30th Anniversary reissue will be available in multiple formats, including digitally and on CD, limited-quantity red vinyl, and a super-deluxe 2LP boxset.

Dave Grohl guests on The Late Late Show with James Corden

Dave Grohl was among the guests on the February 23 episode of CBS-TV’s The Late Late Show with James Corden.

The Foo Fighter was on hand to promote the February 25 release of the band’s forthcoming horror-comedy film, “Studio 666.”

Featured alongside fellow guest Hilary Duff, Grohl shared some details about the film, and was asked about his busy work schedule in general before the pair were invited to play a game called “James That Tune”, in which James uses a keyboard to play some Foo Fighters classics, and the two must guess what song James is playing…the catch is that James doesn't know how to play a keyboard.

Directed by BJ McDonnell (“Hatchet III”), “Studio 666” sees the Foos move into an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history to record their much-anticipated 10th album. Once in the house, Grohl finds himself dealing with supernatural forces that threaten both the completion of the album and the lives of the band.

The horror-comedy includes appearances from Jeff Garlin, Will Forte and Whitney Cummings, and a cameo by Lionel Richie.

Mammoth WVH perform unreleased song on Young Guns tour

Wolfgang Van Halen’s Mammoth WVH performed an unreleased track, “I Don’t Know It All”, during a February 21 appearance at The Depot in Salt Lake City, UT.

Following its official live debut a day earlier in Denver, CO on the opening night of their Young Guns tour with Dirty Honey, Wolfgang described it as a “new song” before the group launched into the tune.

Without further context, it is unconfirmed, at this point, if it was recorded for the band’s 2021 self-titled debut album and not used, or if it had been written more recently.

The band’s Eddie Van Halen tribute track, “Distance”, recently earned Wolfgang his first Grammy Award nomination.

Released a month after his father passed away at 65 following a long battle with cancer, the tune is a finalist in the songwriters category, Best Rock Song, at the 64th Grammy Awards in Las Vegas on April 3.

“Distance” has been recognized in the category alongside tracks by Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Kings Of Leon and Weezer.

The Young Guns tour will wrap up in Atlanta, GA on April 12.

Mammoth WVH cover Alice In Chains classic in Salt Lake City

Wolfgang Van Halen’s Mammoth WVH performed a cover of the Alice In Chains classic, “Them Bones”, during a February 21 appearance at The Depot in Salt Lake City, UT.

“We’re about to do something we’ve never done before,” Wolfgang told the crowd. “We were doing this in the week we were rehearsing for this, and we just did it for fun. But it was so fun that we found ourselves ending rehearsal with it every time. It’s a cover and, no, it’s not a Van Halen cover, but’s a cover of a band that we really like and we’re gonna play it for you.”

The track was the second single from Alice In Chains’ 1992 album, “Dirt”, a US top 5 record that went on to sell more than 4 million copies in the region.

The Salt Lake City event marked the second show of the Young Guns tour, which pairs Mammoth WVH with Dirty Honey as both groups deliver music from their 2021 self-titled debut albums.

Originally set to begin in Chicago, IL last month, the bands postponed the launch “due to an abundance of caution regarding the recent COVID surge”; the series kicked off in Denver, CO on February 20.

The Young Guns tour is scheduled to wrap up in Atlanta, GA on April 12.

John Mellencamp joined by Bruce Springsteen on new single Did You Say Such A Thing

John Mellencamp is joined by Bruce Springsteen on “Did You Say Such A Thing”, the latest single from his new album, “Strictly A One-Eyed Jack.”

The pairing was first heard last fall on the album’s lead single, “Wasted Days”, and Springsteen also appears on the project’s closing track, “A Life Full Of Rain.”

"Bruce came to Indiana and stayed at my house,” Mellencamp tells USA Today. “I have a studio (nearby). He stayed for four or five days. Bruce is a good guy. He’s a sweet guy, and I think the world of him. We come from very similar backgrounds – small towns.

"Bruce and I have known each other since we were kids, but I was always kind of considered the poor man’s Springsteen. That didn’t bother me. I thought it was just lazy journalism. But Bruce and I have grown to be almost brothers, and I love the guy. He’s been an inspiration and I told him, you made me work harder, I’ve gotta compete with that. Bruce was a blessing to me all along. Maybe I didn’t see it that way, but I do now."

The 2022 album marks Mellencamp’s 25th studio release and first since the 2018 covers project, “Other’s People’s Stuff.”

Procol Harum singer Gary Brooker dead at 76

Procol Harum singer Gary Brooker has died at the age of 76.

“With the deepest regret, we must announce the death on 19 February 2022 of Gary Brooker MBE, singer, pianist and composer of Procol Harum, and a brightly-shining, irreplaceable light in the music industry,” announced the band in a joint statement. “Aged 76, he had been receiving treatment for cancer, but died peacefully at home.

“From his earliest onstage duets with his musician father, through his youthful recording career with Southend’s The Paramounts, Gary exhibited and developed a highly-individual talent. His first single with Procol Harum, 1967’s ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’, is widely regarded as defining ‘The Summer of Love’, yet it could scarcely have been more different from the characteristic records of that era.

“Nor was it characteristic of his own writing,”
they continued. “Over thirteen albums Procol Harum never sought to replicate it, preferring to forge a restlessly progressive path, committed to looking forward, and making each record a ‘unique entertainment’. Gary’s voice and piano were the single defining constant of Procol’s fifty-year international concert career. Without any stage antics or other gimmicks he was invariably the most watchable musician in the show (he played several other instruments in the studio).”

Brooker co-founded Procol Harum with songwriter Keith Reid in Southend-on-Sea, UK in 1967; the pair launched the progressive rock band with a lineup that included guitarist Ray Royer, bassist David Knights, keyboardist Matthew Fisher and drummer Bobby Harrison.

The outfit released “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” in the spring of 1967; the instant classic hit No. 1 in at least a dozen countries, including a six-week run atop the UK charts.

Lineup changes followed the song’s international success, with Brooker’s Paramounts bandmate Robin Trower among those on board for the group’s self-titled album debut, which arrived later that same year. The project also included the hit “Homburg”, and the classic track "Conquistador"; a live version of that song with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra would become a hit 5 years later as part of a 1972 live release.

Procol Harum would issue two more albums – “Shine On Brightly” (1968) and “A Salty Dog” (1969) – before the 60s came to close, and they would continue album chart success into the mid-1970s through the next three studio records before declining sales led them to disband in 1977.

Brooker would launch a solo career in 1979 while joining Eric Clapton’s band for his “Another Ticket” album and through to 1981, after which the singer issued two more record in the 1980s.

Procol Harum would regroup in 1991 for a new album, “The Prodigal Stranger”, and return to the live concert circuit for a few years before limiting their tour schedules moving forward; they would release their 13th and latest record, “Novum”, in 2017.

Read the band's full statement regarding Brooker’s passing at procolharum.com.

Duff McKagan joins Eddie Vedder for Pretenders classic in Seattle

Duff McKagan joined Eddie Vedder for a version of the Pretenders classic, “Precious”, during a February 21 show at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA.

The tune - which appeared on the Pretenders' self-titled 1979 debut - saw McKagan take the stage for his second guest appearance at a show in his hometown in two weeks, following a February 9 jam at the Paramount Theatre with Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators for a version of the Guns N’ Roses track, “Nightrain.”

“Congratulations to @eddievedder for one hell of a record,” shared McKagan on Instagram after the concert. “This show ..that band @chadsmithofficial @thisiswatt @pluralone_official @chrischaneybass and @thegingerman222 !!! So good.”

The first of two nights in Seattle are part of Vedder’s brief US tour this month to promote his new album, “Earthling.”

The Pearl Jam rocker recently postponed a pair of concerts on the trek following a COVID-19 outbreak in his touring party; they were promptly rescheduled, with an event at the YouTube Theater on Los Angeles set for February 25, and a San Diego stop at The Magnolia now set to close the series on February 27.

You can stream the “Earthling” album in full here.

Foo Fighters detail Studio 666 on Jimmy Kimmel Live

The Foo Fighters were guests on a recent episode of ABC-TV’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the late night program is sharing video of the February 16 appearance.

The full band was on hand to promote the February 25 release of their forthcoming horror-comedy film, “Studio 666.”

Directed by BJ McDonnell (“Hatchet III”), the project sees the Foos move into an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history to record their much-anticipated 10th album. Once in the house, Dave Grohl finds himself dealing with supernatural forces that threaten both the completion of the album and the lives of the band.

The group shared details about “Studio 666”, including who each member thought was the worst actor in the band, who had the best death scene, and revealed news of a cameo by Lionel Richie; the film also stars Jeff Garlin, Will Forte and Whitney Cummings.
