Journey guitarist Neal Schon files new legal action against Jonathan Cain

Neal Schon has filed a new legal action against Jonathan Cain over a performance of a Journey classic during a recent political event.

According to Variety, Cain performed “Don’t Stop Believin’” during an event for Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, FL last month, which led to Schon filing a cease-and-desist order against his bandmate.

Cain has long been a member of the former president’s inner circle; his wife, Paula White, is a televangelist and Trump’s spiritual advisor.

“Although Mr. Cain is free to express his personal beliefs and associations, when he does that on behalf of Journey or for the band, such conduct is extremely deleterious to the Journey brand as it polarizes the band’s fans and outreach. Journey is not, and should not be, political,” reads the letter, in part. "Mr. Cain's unauthorized affiliation of Journey with the politics of Donald Trump has the band's fans up in arms, as is demonstrated by a sample of the attached emails and Twitter comments. This has caused, and continues to cause, irreparable harm to the Journey brand, its fan base and earning potential, especially in light of the forthcoming tour.

“Mr. Cain has no right to use Journey for politics,” the letter continues. “His politics should be his own personal business. He should not be capitalizing on Journey’s brand to promote his personal political or religious agenda to the detriment of the band,” calling it a “harmful use of the brand.”

The political event performance is the latest in a series of legal issues within the Journey organization in recent months, which include a trademark dispute with former member Steve Perry and a disagreement between Schon and Cain over alleged financial issues.

Journey recently announced dates for the 2023 Freedom tour of North America, and has just released a new package, “Live In Concert At Lollapalooza”, which captures the band’s headlining set at Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL in July of 2021.

Journey delivered the No. 1 Rock News Story Of The Year and were named the No. 2 Rock News Artist Of The Year as part of the 2022 hennemusic Rock News Awards.

KISS and Journey win 2022 hennemusic Rock News Awards

KISS and Journey were the winners of the 2022 hennemusic Rock News Awards, the daily music news site announced Friday.

The 13th annual event saw KISS named hennemusic Rock News Artist Of The Year, while Journey delivered the hennemusic Rock News Story Of The Year.

KISS and Journey were the most read-about artists in each category, whose winners are chosen by music fans: total page views determine the Rock News Story Of The Year, while the Rock News Artist Of The Year is based on the combined page views of the top 50 hennemusic rock news stories of the past twelve months.

The Top 10 in both categories were counted down over the past two weeks, in the tradition of the weekly hennemusic Hot 10.

“While KISS continues their farewell tour, their archival releases have attracted a lot of attention from hennemusic readers,” says Publisher Bruce Henne. “Vintage recordings of live concerts and the 40th anniversary ‘Creatures Of The Night’ project delivered KISS three spots in the top 10 of the hennemusic Rock News Story Of The Year category, which was won by Journey amid news of some internal legal battles with current and former members.”

2022 marks the second year in a row that KISS have picked up a hennemusic Rock News Award, after snagging hennemusic Rock News Story Of The Year honors in 2021, while Journey earn their first honors after several Top 10 finishes over the past decade.

Previous hennemusic Rock News Awards honorees include Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, and AC/DC, among others.

Former Journey singer Steve Perry launched a legal action in September in an effort to prevent former bandmates Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain from owning merchandise trademarks on the names of many of the band’s biggest hits.

Perry claims that the pair are not allowed to unilaterally register trademarks for the song names because the trio signed a partnership agreement requiring unanimous consent for any use of the tracks, for merchandise or anything else.

Rock News Artist of The Year No. 2 – JOURNEY


Journey entered 2022 with a New Year’s Eve performance from New York’s Times Square as part of the Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special and, by February, the group shared the track list for their forthcoming album, “Freedom”, as they hit the road for shows across North America in support of the project.

In April, Journey’s 1981 smash, “Don’t Stop Believin’”, was among the 25 sound recordings selected for induction into the US Library Of Congress National Recording Registry; the following month, the group cut short the spring tour when one of the band members tested positive for Covid.

Guitarist Neal Schon performed the national anthem at Game 1 of the NBA Finals at the Chase Center in San Francisco, CA on June 2, and then appeared on America’s Got Talent to deliver “Don’t Stop Believin’” alongside Season 14 winner, pianist and singer Kodi Lee, and singer Teddy Swims for the song, in sync with the release of Swims’ version as his latest single.

The following month, Journey announced 2023 dates for the “Freedom” tour as Schon sued Cain over a financial dispute surrounding issues relating to the keyboardist's allegedly secret and exclusive use of a credit card under the band’s corporate company; Cain denied the claims while saying the guitarist’s issue is his inability t control his spending.

In December, Journey hired Def Leppard’s manager to oversee the band, while also releasing “Live In Concert At Lollapalooza”, which captures the group’s 2021 appearance in Chicago, IL.

Steve Perry streams new holiday single Maybe This Year

Steve Perry is streaming his original holiday single, “Maybe This Year”, as featured on the newly-released Deluxe Edition of his 2021 Christmas album, “The Season.”

“I wanted to write an original Christmas song of my own,” explains Perry, “so Dallas Kruse and I began writing what became ‘Maybe This Year.’ I wrote the lyrical sentiment about how the holidays can bring such joy and sadness and how for me, both these emotions give me connection to feelings of gratitude for so many years gone by, and a desire to hold on to these holiday feelings we share throughout the coming year.”

“Maybe This Year” joins a soulful new cover of the Donny Hathaway classic, "This Christmas", as one of two brand-new recordings featured on the expanded Deluxe Edition of the project.

The former Journey singer’s latest project was co-produced by Perry and engineer Thom Flowers and mostly recorded at his home studio in California, where he was joined by multi-instrumentalist Dallas Kruse and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa).

Following a long break from the music industry, Perry released his first album in 25 years – “Traces” – in 2018; the project delivered the singer his first US solo top 10 album when it debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.

Steve Perry launches legal action over Journey trademarks

Former Journey singer Steve Perry has launched a legal action in an effort to prevent former bandmates Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain from owning merchandise trademarks on the names of many of the band’s biggest hits.

According to Billboard, Perry filed a petition at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on September 11 that is asking the agency to invalidate 20 trademark registrations held by a company called Freedom JN LLC – an entity that he says is controlled by Schon and Cain.

Perry claims that the pair are not allowed to unilaterally register trademarks for the song names because the trio signed a partnership agreement requiring unanimous consent for any use of the tracks, for merchandise or anything else.

In his petition, Perry quoted the contract at issue: “…no Partner may authorize, approve or disapprove any use or exploitation, or grant or license any rights in or to any Group Compositions, in whole or in part, (including, without limitation, the titles thereof) in connection with any Product or otherwise, without the prior, written, unanimous consent of all of the partners.”

After scoring huge international success with Journey through the late 1970s and mid-1980s, Perry left the group in 1998; the singer made his first public appearance with the band during their induction into the 2017 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame but chose to not perform at the event.

The latest Journey legal drama follows the 2020 firing of members Steve Smith and Ross Valory over an alleged effort to take control over the band’s name in what has been referred to as “an attempted corporate coup d'état.”

Rock News Artist of The Year No. 5 – JOURNEY


Journey kicked off 2021 with news that they would headline Chicago’s Lollapalooza in July at the city’s Grant Park.

A few weeks later, singer Arnel Pineda made headlines when he revealed that he still had hopes that Steve Perry would reunite with the band several decades after he last performed with the San Francisco-based outfit, even going so far as to tease Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain about inviting Perry to perform with them.

In February, Journey’s 1981 classic, “Don’t Stop Believin’”, passed 1 billion streams on Spotify, not long after it had been recognized among the songs named for induction into the 2021 Grammy Hall Of Fame.

By April, Schon and Cain had settled a legal dispute with former members Steve Smith and Ross Valory after Smith and Valory were fired by the pair a year earlier over an alleged effort to take control of the band’s name in what had been referred to as “an attempted corporate coup d'état.”

Following the pairs’ dismissal, Journey brought in former member Randy Jackson on bass and drummer Narada Michael Walden as their new rhythm section, with the lineup rounded out by Pineda and keyboardist/vocalist Jason Derlatka.

In June, Journey issued a new single, “The Way We Used To Be”, which marked their first new music since the 2011 album, “Eclipse.”

The band received news in July that their 1981 classic album, “Escape”, was certified with Diamond status in the US for sales of 10 million copies; the project achieved the milestone in sync with its 40th anniversary on July 17.

Journey welcomed the return of former member Deen Castronovo in late July, ahead of the group’s Chicago club date and appearance at Lollapalooza, essentially expanding the lineup to include two drummers;.Castronovo was previously a member from 1998-2015, but was let go after he faced legal trouble for some domestic and other issues.

Journey performed a set at the abbreviated We Love NYC homecoming concert in New York’s Central Park on August 21; the event was shut down due to severe weather ahead of Hurricane Henri’s anticipated landfall the following day.

Castronovo underwent surgery on two herniated discs in his back in September, which would require some recovery time before he could rejoin the band.

This month, Journey launched a six-show residency at the Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas which will wrap up their 2021 live schedule; the band will next be seen kicking off the Freedom 2022 North American tour in February.

The former Journey singer’s latest project was co-produced by Perry and engineer Thom Flowers and mostly recorded at his home studio in California, where he was joined by drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa) and multi-instrumentalist Dallas Kruse.

"All the songs on this record were my favorites growing up," says Perry. "I used to hear them on the Philco radio that my grandmother always had on in the kitchen when she was cooking the most amazing holiday food, and because of that they hold a very emotional place in my heart. I wanted to make sure to record them all in a simple way that honors how I first heard and fell in love with them as a child.

“I hope when people hear this record, they’re teleported in the same way I was when I recorded all these songs – I hope it brings them back to those golden moments with their loved ones and gives them that feeling of joy and connection and comfort that we all need so much.”

Steve Perry is sharing the first preview to his newly-announced Christmas album, “The Season.”

The former Journey singer is streaming his take on the holiday classic, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.”

“When I was recording vocals for ‘I’ll be Home For Christmas’,” Perry explains, “as I was singing ‘Please have Snow and Mistletoe and Presents under the tree’ … I was emotionally thrown into standing in my grandmother’s house staring through the Door that I always hung Mistletoe and then I saw her beautiful Christmas tree in front of her living room window…I had to stop singing because it felt like I was really there ……. I was a bit stunned…Back Home for Christmas is where everyone wants to be!”

Journey: Escape album certified Diamond for US sales of 10 million

Journey’s 1981 classic, “Escape”, has been certified with Diamond status in the US for sales of 10 million copies.

The project achieved the milestone – as awarded via The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) – this week in sync with its 40th anniversary on July 17.

The album, which features the singles “Who’s Crying Now,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” “Still They Ride,” and “Stone In Love”, topped the Billboard 200 back in the day.

“This is such a truly gratifying achievement for all the work we did together,” says Neal Schon. “Congratulations.”

Earlier this year, “Don’t Stop Believin’” passed 1 billion streams on Spotify.

Journey will debut their new lineup additions – bassist Randy Jackson, drummer Narada Michael Walden and keyboardist Jason Derlatka – when they return to the stage for a July 29 show at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL, just two days before they play Lollapalooza in the city.

Journey: Don’t Stop Believin’ tops 1 billion Spotify streams

Journey’s 1981 classic, “Don’t Stop Believin’”, has passed 1 billion streams on Spotify.

"Wow!!! Thank you Fans!!,” shared guitarist Neal Schon on social media. “We are over 1 Billion streams on Spotify - Don’t Stop Believin'. Queen is the ONLY other band at this point. Congratulations guys."

The second single from “Escape” was a US Top 10 hit and went on to become the group’s signature song worldwide.

Written by Schon, Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain, “Don’t Stop Believin’” was recently among the songs named for induction into the 2021 Grammy Hall Of Fame, which recognizes a range of both single and album recordings at least 25 years old that exhibit qualitative or historical significance.

Journey singer Arnel Pineda recently confirmed that the band are working on new music during the pandemic; the project will be the first with new additions Randy Jackson on bass, Nara Michael Walden on drums and keyboardist/vocalist Jason Derlatka.

Aerosmith reschedule European tour to 2022

Aerosmith have announced rescheduled dates for a European tour.

Originally billed as a 50th anniversary trek that was scheduled to start in June of 2020, the seven-week series was first moved to 2021 due to the pandemic, and now it’s been moved a second time.

“Due to current conditions and for the safety of our fans, the 2021 European Tour has been rescheduled to 2022,” says the band. “Please stay tuned for more information regarding the new dates or contact your point of purchase. All tickets will be valid for new dates.”

The 2022 series will open in Moscow, Russia on May 28, with shows wrapping up in Krakow, Poland on July 13.

With worldwide sales of more than 150 million records, Aerosmith – who formed in Boston, MA in 1970 – were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2001.

Journey singer still hopes for Steve Perry reunion

Journey singer Arnel Pineda has revealed that he still hopes Steve Perry will reunite with the band several decades after he last performed with the San Francisco-based outfit.

“I’ve been teasing Jonathan [Cain] and Neal [Schon]: ‘Why don’t you invite Steve Perry over for a tour?’”, Pineda tells Rolling Stone. “Oh, my God. I never saw them back in the Eighties. I was just a young kid in Manila, just playing around, with no chance of going to the States and seeing their show, but they were one of my favorite bands … I’m not losing [the hope] that one day he’ll join the band for two or three songs. It would be one of the highlights of my life if that happens.”

While scoring huge international success with Journey through the late 1970s and mid-1980s, Perry left the group in 1998; after working with a couple of singers, Schon invited Pineda to join the lineup in 2007 when he saw the rocker singing Journey covers on YouTube with Filipino band The Zoo.

“I’m just so blessed,” explains Pineda. “I can’t thank them enough, especially Neal Schon. He was the one that was really sold that I am the one since 2007. But then again, I still think, 'If only they could bring back Steve Perry.'”

When prompted that Perry’s return would put him out of work, Pineda says: “That would be OK to me! I’m telling you. That’s how much I adore him and I adore Journey and how much I adore Steve Perry.”

The Philippines-based singer is aware of the responsibility he carries for Journey, Perry and the group’s fans.

“I’m delivering on the legacy that the Voice [Steve Perry] has left behind,” he adds. “Especially now that he formally passed the torch to me in 2017 [at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction], he made that known and he was very gracious. It was very kind of him. It was so generous of him to say that in public. It was really an honor.”

Following a long break from the music industry, Perry released his first album in 25 years – “Traces” – in 2018; the project delivered the iconic singer his first US solo top 10 album when it debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.

As for Journey, they continue to work on new music during the pandemic while Pineda records remotely half a world away from the band’s home base in California; the project will be the first with new additions Randy Jackson on bass, Nara Michael Walden on drums and keyboardist/vocalist Jason Derlatka.

“We finished six songs so far,” Pineda confirms. “There’s talk of going out somewhere first, maybe Las Vegas for a residency. We don’t know yet. We haven’t decided. Just to break the ice between the new members and us.”

Steve Perry is streaming a new radio mix of “Most Of All”, a track from the recently-released acoustic edition of his 2018 comeback album, “Traces.”

The vinyl version of the song follows an acoustic take that initially served as a preview to the project, which sees the former Journey vocalist remove much of the production elements from the original record to showcase the material in its barest form.

“When writing songs, the original inspiration is always my 1st compass where the songs should go,” explains the rocker. “Alternate Versions & Sketches is exactly that. I’m excited for you to hear the original seeds of these songs.”

“Traces” – which marked Perry’s first album in 25 years – delivered the singer his first US solo top 10 album when it debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.

Perry recently confirmed that he is actively working on new music at his home studio in California.

Steve Perry working on new album

Steve Perry has started work on the follow-up to his 2018 comeback album, “Traces.”

The former Journey singer’s first record in 25 years marked his return to music; he’s since released a stripped-down, acoustic version of the set and has returned to the studio to create more new music.

“I’m already in the studio,” Perry tells American Songwriter. “My studio is in a bunker underneath my house. Drums can be loud, guitars and amps can be loud. I’m down in there sketching more songs. I’m agonizing over the lyrics of a particular one right now. One day, I love the way the lyric is feeling. The next day I change my mind and want to go back to the original lyrics. That’s where I woke up this morning: I wanted to revisit the original lyric that I thought yesterday wasn’t right.

“We’re talking one word,” he adds. “I’ll highlight that word for now in my writing sketch, and I’ll drop in and change that one word and drop out. And I’ll listen and see if I’m OK with that word change. It can be a pothole in the road or it can be a smooth highway.”

For his just-released edition of “Traces”, Perry removed much of the production elements from the original 2018 record to showcase the material in its barest form….and he plans to continue that process moving forward.

“With Alt Versions & Sketches, I just wanted to strip it down to see if, emotionally, it really speaks by itself,” the rocker explains. “It’s going to be a different emotion, but it’s another valid, worthy emotion when you strip it down and take all the clothes off it, and it’s just naked there with melody and lyrics. I think it has to come back down to that.

“I think I always want to do that from now on. After I do some project, I’m going to always want to do stripped-down versions, because the songs deserve their own stripped-down moment.”

Steve Perry is streaming a stripped-down version of The Beatles’ classic, “I Need You”, as the latest preview to the December 4 release of an acoustic edition of his 2018 comeback album, “Traces.”

“It's my interpretation of one of my favorite George Harrison songs,” says Perry of the track originally featured on 1965’s “Help!”

Billed as “Traces (Alternative Versions and Sketches)”, the project sees the former Journey vocalist remove much of the production elements from the original to showcase the material in its barest form.
