Creedence Clearwater Revival announce Royal Albert Hall concert documentary

Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 1970 appearance at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall will be the subject of a new documentary currently in production following the discovery of unseen film footage five decades after the event.

“Travelin’ Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall” will take viewers on a journey from the band's humble, yet formative years in El Cerrito, CA, to their meteoric rise in 1969, from headlining Woodstock to selling out the Oakland Coliseum before traveling through Europe and taking the stage at the Royal Albert Hall.

News of the project follows years of research, including the discovery of the original concert footage in a London vault that has been fully restored after 50 years of storage. The film also includes previously unreleased 16mm footage of the legendary performance, fly-on-the-wall band interactions and interviews unearthed from the Fantasy Records vault, plus what is believed to be the earliest known footage of Creedence performing live.

“Travelin’ Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall” is directed by Bob Smeaton (“The Beatles Anthology” and “Jimi Hendrix: Band Of Gypsies”) and narrated by actor Jeff Bridges, who like his iconic character “The Dude” in The Big Lebowski, is a fan of the band.

The film features the ONLY full concert footage of the original Creedence Clearwater Revival to ever be released, while the audio was mixed and restored from the original multitrack tapes by Giles Martin and Sam Okell (“The Beatles: Get Back” and “Rocket Man”).

“As a kid growing up in the UK during the late '60s, early '70s, Creedence were a band that I was only really aware of through their hit singles,” says Smeaton. “Therefore making this film was an education for me, I was able to see and hear why they are worthy of their status as one of the greatest bands of all time. I knew they were good, I never knew they were that good.”

CCR released seven albums (including three platinum ones in 1969 alone) and had a dozen US Top 40 hits before they disbanded in 1972; the group sold more than 26 million albums in the US alone and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993.

Details regarding the release of “Travelin’ Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall” are forthcoming.

Rush top multiple US charts with Moving Pictures 40th anniversary reissue

Rush has topped multiple US charts with the recent release of a series of 40th anniversary editions of their 1981 classic, “Moving Pictures.”

According to Billboard, the reissues have landed the project at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums, Top Hard Rock Albums and Top Catalog Albums charts.

“Moving Pictures” also re-enters the Top Album Sales list at No. 2 and the Billboard 200 at No. 11 to deliver the Canadian band their highest rank in nearly a decade.

The 2022 reissues sold 18,000 copies in the US in the week ending April 21, an increase of 7,847% compared to its sales in the previous week. It marks the band’s best sales week in over six years, since “R40 Live” sold 24,000 copies in its debut week, when it arrived at No. 14 on Top Album Sales in December of 2015.

Of the 18,000 copies sold, physical sales comprise 16,500 (9,500 on vinyl and 7,000 on CD) and digital sales comprise 1,500.

The 40th-anniversary reissues were available in multiple remastered editions, including a super deluxe box set; all versions of the album – old and new – are combined for tracking and charting purposes.

Recorded with producer Terry Brown at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec and featuring the singles “Limelight” and “Tom Sawyer”, “Moving Pictures” would become Rush’s first album to top the Canadian charts while earning a second top 5 spot in the US following success with 1980’s “Permanent Waves.”

Ozzy Osbourne tests positive for COVID-19

Ozzy Osbourne has tested positive for COVID-19, according to his wife and manager Sharon.

"Ozzy was only diagnosed... It was, like, middle of the night [U.K.] time. I spoke to him and he's okay," explained Sharon in a clip from her newly-launched show, “The Talk UK”, in a clip shared by TMZ. "I am very worried about Ozzy right now. We've gone two years without him catching COVID and it's just Ozzy's luck he would get it now."

The news has caused Sharon to take a break from her program after just three days on air to return to Los Angeles to be with her 73-year-old husband.

When asked what the first thing she will do when the two reconnect in person, Sharon says "[I will] hold him and kiss him with about three masks on, I think.”

The iconic rocker – who has struggled with health issues in the past few years and revealed in 2020 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, the long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system – recently confirmed that had completed the follow-up to 2020’s “Ordinary Man.”

“I’m so happy to let everyone know that I finished my new album this week and delivered it to my label Epic Records,” said Ozzy. “I’ll be sharing all the information about the album and its’ upcoming release with you in the next several weeks.” See also:

Eddie Van Halen rivalry leads Randy Rhoads documentary preview

A club days rivalry in 1970s Los Angeles between Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen is the focus of a preview to the forthcoming documentary, “Randy Rhoads: Reflections Of A Guitar Icon.”

As Quiet Riot and Van Halen became staples on the Sunset Strip, the guitarists for both bands made names for themselves as gunslingers while each group developed a loyal following before securing record deals.

“At some of the shows, we would see David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen there, which was always interesting to me,” recalls Quiet Riot fan club president Lori Hollen, “because I know Randy never went to see them play….but they would always come to see Quiet Riot and Randy play.”

If Randy wasn’t checking Van Halen out on the circuit, he was aware of - and inspired by – “the competition”, according to Eddie.

“He was one guitarist who was honest, anyway,” explains Eddie, “because I read some interviews that he did and he said everything he did he learned from me. He was good, but I don’t really think he did anything that I haven’t done. And there ain’t nothing wrong with it. I’ve copied other people’s licks, you know?”

To motivate Rhoads during live performances, his guitar tech, Brian Reason, would tape a picture of Eddie on Randy’s wah wah pedal

“He wasn’t very excited about [it], but it was in the perfect place,” says Reason, “because every time he stomped on his wah wah pedal, he stomped on it as if he wanted to crush it.”

Set to premiere via Video On Demand on May 6, “Randy Rhoads: Reflections Of A Guitar Icon” is directed by Andre Relis and narrated by L.A. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns.

Guns N’ Roses classic Sweet Child O' Mine tops US Hard Rock charts

Guns N’ Roses’ 1987 classic, “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, has topped the US Hot Hard Rock Songs chart following its inclusion in a trailer for upcoming movie "Thor: Love And Thunder."

According to Billboard, the song debuts at No. 1 on the latest chart after it earned 4.7 million official U.S. streams – an 8% boost – and sold 1,600 downloads, up 181%, according to Luminate, formerly MRC Data. A staple of classic hits and rock radio, it also drew 1.2 million in audience on stations that report to Billboard‘s Radio Songs chart.

The feat delivered Guns N’ Roses their first No. 1 on the Hot Hard Rock Songs list since it was launched in 2020; they previously scored a pair of Top 5 tracks last year with “Hard Skool” and “Absurd.”

The increased activity and profile also helped “Sweet Child O’ Mine” move from 2-1 on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart for its 24th week atop the survey since its 2020 premiere, while also jumping 16-3 on Hard Rock Digital Song Sales and re-entering the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart at No. 9.

The third track issued from Guns N” Roses’ debut, “Appetite For Destruction”, remains the group’s only US No. 1 single and one of six US Top 10 hits.

Guns N’ Roses will next be seen performing at Daytona Beach, FL’s Welcome To Rockville festival on May 21 before the group opens a summer European tour in Lisbon, Portugal on June 4.

Gene Simmons invites Ace Frehley to perform with KISS on farewell tour

Gene Simmons has offered a public invitation to Ace Frehley to perform with KISS on the band’s End Of The Road farewell tour.

"The invitations still stand,” tweeted Simmons alongside April 27 birthday wishes to the original KISS lead guitarist. “Jump up on stage with us for encores. The fans would love it."

The current KISS lineup sees guitarist Tommy Thayer perform using Frehley’s spaceman makeup and stage gear while longtime drummer Eric Singer appears in Peter Criss’ cat makeup and stage persona.

Frehley reunited with KISS for the first time in 17 years during a fall 2018 acoustic performance on KISS Kruise 8, just two months before the classic rock group launched the farewell series in Vancouver, BC in early 2019.

Frehley is currently playing shows on a spring US tour, while KISS are performing in South America before returning to the States for a handful of concerts next month ahead of an extended European trek.

Simmons and Paul Stanley formed KISS with Frehley and Criss in New York City in 1973; the group’s original lineup was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2014.

Soundgarden classic Superunknown certified for 6 million US sales

Soundgarden’s 1994 classic, “Superunknown”, has been certified 6x platinum for US sales of 6 million copies by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).

Produced by Michael Beinhorn and the band, and recorded at Seattle’s Bad Animals studio, Soundgarden’s fourth album delivered radio hits and fan favorites like “Black Hole Sun”, “Fell On Black Days” and “My Wave.”

The project delivered the group’s commercial breakthrough, topping the US charts and selling 3 million copies in the region in the first seven months following its release, and another 2 million by early 1996.

“Superknown” earned Soundgarden a pair of Grammy Awards for “Spoonman” (Best Metal Performance) and “Black Hole Sun” (Best Hard Rock Performance), while the latter also delivered an MTV Video Music Award in the “Best Metal/Hard Rock Video” category.

Soundgarden disbanded following the 2017 suicide of singer Chris Cornell in Detroit, MI while on tour with the band.

Soundgarden were among the nominees under consideration for entry into the 2020 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame; the Seattle band failed to garner enough music industry support to be inducted on their first nomination.

Randy Rhoads documentary coming to Video On Demand

A new documentary about the late Randy Rhoads will premiere next month via Video On Demand.

Directed by Andre Relis and narrated by L.A. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns, “Randy Rhoads: Reflections Of A Guitar Icon” takes a look at the life and legacy of the rocker, who co-founded Quiet Riot before shooting to fame as the groundbreaking guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne in the early 1980s.

Rhoads was a key figure in the revival of Osbourne’s career following his dismissal from Black Sabbath; the pair launched Ozzy’s solo brand with 1980’s “Blizzard Of Ozz” and 1981’s “Diary of A Madman” before the guitarist was tragically killed in a plane crash at the age of 25 while on tour in 1982.

Set to premiere via Video On Demand on May 6, the documentary includes interviews with Randy’s mother Delores Rhoads, brother Kelle Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Frankie Banali (Quiet Riot), Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake), Bruce Kulick (KISS), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio), Gary Moore, Dweezil Zappa, George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob) and Ozzy Osbourne.

“I’m beyond excited to be sharing Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon with the world,” director and VMI founder Andre Relis tells Screen Rant. “I grew up listening to Randy in Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osbourne, and was inspired by his unmatchable talent. So much that I actually joined a band in the 90’s — a punk, metal infusion called Rubberneck — and became a touring artist. I’m thankful to my team of producers, and thankful to Tracii for helping to narrate the film and showcase the life of such a legendary guitarist.”

Rhoads was posthumously inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame during the 2021 ceremony last fall when his work was recognized with the Musical Excellence Award, which is given to artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence have had a dramatic impact on music.

Rush: Alex Lifeson‘s Envy Of None premiere Never Said I Love You video

Envy Of None – the new band featuring Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson – are premiering a video for “Never Said I Love You”, the latest single from their recently-released self-titled debut album.

The project sees Lifeson working with Coney Hatch founder/bassist Andy Curran, producer and engineer Alfio Annibalini, and singer-songwriter Maiah Wynne for the record.

“’Never Said I Love You’ is a very special one for me and Alf,” says Curran. “It had been kicking around for a while in a demo form and the bed track always felt like it had so much potential. When we wrote the backing tracks we were certainly feeling it had some punk/pop overtones, I think we were channeling late 80’s Brit pop vibrations and I came up with the lyric line ‘I Never Said I Love You’ again inspired by bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths and Ultravox, who all wrote about broken hearts on the dance floors around the world ..so I thought it was time to re-introduce that theme but with something that was more upbeat.

“When Maiah and I spoke about this she liked that lyrical hook and ran with it. The icing was Alex coming in and in the 11th hour adding the awesome middle section that sounds like pedal steel and the acoustic guitars in the chorus just elevate it to the next level. My initial thought lyrically was more of a -back off, I never said I love you. Kinda like, hey were just friends but I love how Maiah turned that into something much different.”

Curran says he and the band are thrilled with the initial reaction to the project, which was released on April 8.

“We've been working on and off with all these songs for over 4 years,” explains Curran, “so it’s extremely rewarding to finally finish them all and share them with the world. It’s like all these baby birds (our songs) leaving the nest and flying out into the sky …we have no idea where they will go or who else they will meet along the way - it’s exciting.

“People have been very kind and supportive online and maybe the most rewarding part is hearing die hard Rush fans say they love it. I wasn’t expecting that, same with fans of Coney and my other projects. This is nothing like what me, Alex or Maiah have ever done, so having people comment on social media in such a positive way has really been so cool to see.”

ZZ Top share La Grange performance from Raw live album

ZZ Top are sharing audio of a performance of their 1973 classic, “La Grange”, from the forthcoming live package, “Raw.”

The song from “Tres Hombres” was recorded as part of an intimate session at Gruene Hall, “the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas”, as captured for the 2019 Netflix documentary, “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.”

As a single, “La Grange” was the most successful release the band had experienced up to that time and would become a signature song for the group for almost five decades. The song is something of an homage to “The Chicken Ranch,” a real-life brothel that was located in the town of La Grange, just 88 miles away from New Braunfels.

“La Grange” anticipated the story, written by Larry L. King, that was the basis for the Broadway musical, "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas." The film version starred Dolly Parton as Mona Stangley, proprietor of the much-celebrated establishment.

The late Dusty Hill once recalled, “Shortly after the record was released, they shut it down, and I went around and spent a lot of my time in Texas explaining to people that we didn’t have anything to do with that.”

“That place was the scene of many a ‘rite of passage,’”
added Billy Gibbons. “The closing line, ‘But I might be mistaken,’ was inspired by Buddy Holly’s ‘Peggy Sue Got Married.’”

Due July 22, “Raw” is dedicated “in righteous memory of Dusty Hill”, the bassist who passed away at his home in Houston, TX last July after stepping away from a 2021 tour to address a hip issue; the group enlisted longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis to handle bass duties during what was expected to be a short-term absence, and who continues to perform with the group.

“Raw” will be available on 180 gram vinyl, CD and through digital platforms.

Iron Maiden add Brazil dates to The Legacy Of The Beast tour

Iron Maiden have added three shows in Brazil to The Legacy Of The Beast Tour.

The dates surround the band’s previously confirmed appearance at the 2022 edition of Rock In Rio on September 2.

"We are all very much looking forward to returning to Curitiba and São Paulo and making our first ever visit to Ribeirão Preto, along with Rock in Rio of course,” says manager Rod Smallwood. “We are bringing the full Legacy show that we are taking around the rescheduled European stadiums and festivals this summer. Based on Legacy 2019, but a step beyond, we are of course keeping all of the spectacular big moments and big songs, but we will move things round a little, change a couple of songs to ones more fitting to current times and we are sure you will be blown away by the new ‘Senjutsu’ section, which is massively spectacular – the album proved so popular and successful we just had to give you a bit of that too.

“Eddie has clearly been learning some new tricks of his own over the last couple of years as well, and may even bring a friend. Prepare to be amazed. We love you Brazil!!"

A fan club presale starts Tuesday, April 26, with general public tickets going on sale Thursday, April 28.

Iron Maiden will launch the 2022 series in Zagreb, Croatia on May 22.

The iconic UK band released their latest album, “Senjutsu”, last fall; the group recorded the project in France in 2019 with producer Kevin Shirley.

Liam Gallagher streams video for new single Better Days

Liam Gallagher is streaming a video for “Better Days”, the latest single from his forthcoming album, “C’mon You Know.”

The rocker and his band are seen performing the song on a rooftop in the singer’s hometown of Manchester, England.

“It’s the sound of the summer,” says Gallagher. “Enjoy!”

Liam will donate all UK proceeds from the song to War Child UK for the rest of this year.

"Better Days" follows “Everything’s Electric” and the album’s title track as the third preview to the May 27 release of the follow-up to 2019’s “Why Me? Why Not.”

“C’mon You Know” will arrive just prior to Gallagher performing a pair of shows at the UK’s Knebworth Park in early June as part of a world tour in support of the set.

The Rolling Stones share 2003 Madison Square Garden performance of Don’t Stop

The Rolling Stones are sharing video of a performance of their 2002 single, “Don’t Stop”, as the latest preview to the June 10 release of an expanded and remastered reissue of their 2003 concert film, "Licked Live In NYC."

The song – which was one of four new tracks from the “Forty Licks” compilation – was featured during the band’s appearance at Madison Square Garden during their 40th anniversary tour that was originally issued as an HBO special and part of the “Four Flicks” package.

The 2022 edition has been fully restored and remastered with four previously unreleased songs from NYC, including "Start Me Up", "Tumbling Dice", "Gimme Shelter", and "Sympathy For The Devil", as well three bonus performances from Amsterdam and rehearsal footage.

“Licked Live In NYC” will be available in multiple formats, including DVD+2CD, SD Blu-ray+2CD, as well as a standalone 2CD and 3LP.

The SD Blu-ray package includes the additional 51-minute documentary “Tip Of The Tongue”, which captures the conception and preparation of the Live Licks tour's innovative three show / three venue approach. Inspired to switch up venues on a nightly basis between arenas, ballrooms, or theaters, and setlists along with it, the band are captured preparing for this tour from the recording studio in Paris to the rehearsals in Toronto.

The Rolling Stones will launch a 60th anniversary tour of the UK and Europe in Madrid, Spain on June 1.

Yes reschedule Relayer European tour for third time

For the third time, Yes have rescheduled a European tour that was set to feature a performance of their 1974 album, “Relayer.”

Originally set to begin in the spring of 2019 as part of the band’s Album Series, the trek – which was first moved to 2021 and then to 2022 - will feature two sets by the band with full production and a high definition video wall; the first will feature favorite classic tracks from Yes’ extensive catalogue, while the second will present their seventh studio album, “Relayer.”

Roger Dean will be directing the production and joining the tour with an exhibition of Yes-related art.

“It is with great disappointment Yes announce that the logistical problems of arranging European tour dates for 2022, caused by the on-going pandemic, have proved insurmountable,” says the band. “Yes have taken the decision, for the safety of band members, crew and audiences, to reschedule all mainland European dates to 2023. This has allowed us to add back in the Rockhal in Luxembourg, which we were unable to accommodate in the 2022 tour.

“Tickets for all rescheduled shows remain valid for the new dates.”

“We’re really looking forward to getting back onstage and performing for our fans,”
adds keyboardist Geoff Downes. “Relayer will be special.”

The group's 2022 UK & Ireland dates remain the same and will be a 50th Anniversary Celebration of “Close To The Edge.”

Mastodon share Peace And Tranquility lyric video

Mastodon are sharing a lyric video for “Peace And Tranquility”, the latest track from the “Hushed And Grim” album.

The clip arrives in sync with the start of the second leg of a North American tour in support of the project, which the band recorded in their hometown of Atlanta, GA with producer David Bottrill [Tool, Rush, Muse, Peter Gabriel].

Upon its release last fall, “Hushed And Grim” debuted at No. 20 on the US Billboard 200; the album was created during a period following the loss of longtime manager, Nick John, who died while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2018.

The set features 15 songs, surveying sonic landscapes of rock, psychedelia, punk, metal, alternative, and prog while maintaining the group’s strong musical identity.

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett debuts High Plains Drifter video

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett is debuting an animated video for “High Plains Drifter”, ahead of the April 23 Record Store Day release of his first solo project, “Portals.”

Although he didn’t plan it in advance, the song’s vibe and title were inspired by the classic 1973 Clint Eastwood western of the same name.

The song "was not meant to be specifically music for that film, but it was once it was written, I immediately thought it conveyed the same sentiment as the film, so the piece was christened accordingly,” explains Hammett. “The music for 'High Plains Drifter' initially came from a flamenco piece I had written. It was a two-and-a-half-minute piece, and I really liked it, but it was one of those riffs that would be hard to integrate into Metallica.

“I knew I wanted to do something with it, even though it came out spontaneously. I had been sitting outside messing around with a flamenco acoustic guitar I'd just bought, and it flowed out in the moment. I was determined it would have a life. It would have its moment."

Recorded around the world – from Los Angeles to Paris to Oahu – the four-song instrumental EP “Portals” is billed as “the result of Kirk’s life’s journeys and an invitation to tap into your own inner world”; the project was also heavily influenced by classical music, soundtracks, horror movies, and the work of iconic Italian composer Ennio Morricone.

“Portals” will be available across digital platforms, on CD, and as an Ocean Blue Vinyl EP (including a download card).

Metallica will begin a series of rescheduled South American shows in Santiago, Chile on April 27.

Triumph documentary Rock & Roll Machine to premiere on nugs.net

The Triumph documentary, “Rock & Roll Machine”, will see its global premiere next month on live music streaming site nugs.net.

Produced by Banger Films, the feature details the story of one of Canada’s biggest rock acts of the 1980s – from their humble beginnings as staples of the Toronto club circuit in the mid-'70s to selling out arenas and stadiums all across North America with their legendary live shows.

Formed in Mississauga, ON as a four-piece outfit in 1975, it was the addition of guitarist Rik Emmett to the lineup a few months later that led to Triumph re-launching as a trio that would see the release of a self-titled debut album in 1976 before 1977’s follow-up, “Rock & Roll Machine”, began to gain some attention from US radio.

Triumph would go on to release 9 studio albums ahead of Emmett’s departure in 1988; a tenth record, 1992’s “Edge Of Excess”, rounded out the catalogue before the group essentially disbanded the following year.

The 2021 film culminates in a live reunion as the Triumph delivered a three-song set that marked the band’s first performance in 11 years, as well as its first as a pure three-piece power trio in 31 years.

“The Triumph story was compelling to me, Marc, and the Banger team because it was an opportunity to piece together a broken puzzle,” says Sam Dunn (who co-directed the film with Marc Ricciardelli). “We wanted to know how and why the band dissolved at the peak of their powers.”

Triumph “Rock & Roll Machine” will premiere on nugs.net on Friday, May 13 at 8:30 PM Eastern Time; the event will kick off with an exclusive, moderated Q&A with all three members of the band.

Tickets for the global streaming event are now available at nugs.net; streaming is available worldwide, with the exception of Canada, where it premiered last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival and has already been broadcast nationally on television.
