Foo Fighters hint at 2023 return
The Foo Fighters are hinting at a return in 2023 as they share a year-end message to fans on social media.
"As we say goodbye to the most difficult and tragic year that our band has ever known, we are reminded of how thankful we are for the people that we love and cherish most, and for the loved ones who are no longer with us,” shared the group. “Foo Fighters were formed 27 years ago to represent the healing power of music and a continuation of life. And for the past 27 years our fans have built a worldwide community, a devoted support system that has helped us all get through the darkest of times together. A place to share our joy and our pain, our hopes and fears, and to join in a chorus of life together through music.
“Without Taylor, we never would have become the band that we were – and without Taylor, we know that we're going to be a different band going forward. We also know that you, the fans, meant as much to Taylor as he meant to you and we know that when we see you again – and we will soon – he'll be there in spirit with all of us every night."
Hawkins passed away in his hotel room in Bogota, Colombia on March 25 at the age of 50 while the Foo Fighters were playing a series of shows in South America.
The band hosted two tribute concerts for Hawkins in September that saw rock royalty join them in celebrating the drummer’s spirit and legacy.
The Foo Fighters were recently named the No. 3 Rock News Artist Of The Year and delivered the No. 7 Rock News Story Of The Year as part of the 2022 hennemusic Rock News Awards.

Queen guitarist Brian May knighted by King Charles III
Queen guitarist Brian May has been appointed a Knight Bachelor by King Charles III in the New Year Honours List, an annual tradition celebrating the achievements and service of exceptional individuals from across the United Kingdom.
Previously recognized with the C.B.E. award in 2005 for services to the music industry and for charity work, May’s new citation recognises the rocker as “Dr Brian Harold May CBE. Musician, Astrophysicist and Animal Welfare Advocate. For services to Music and to Charity.”
“Already carrying the title of Dr. as well as previously receiving a CBE, the Queen musician now receives the award of a Knighthood, adding the honorific title Sir to his name, hereafter to be recognised with the full title Sir Brian Harold May CBE. Brian’s wife of 22 years, Anita Dobson, may use the title of Lady May.
“I'm happy and grateful to receive this honour,” says May. “I will regard the knighthood not so much as a reward, but more as a charge – a commission - for me to continue to fight for justice - to be a voice for those who have no voice. I will endeavour to be worthy - to be that Knight in Shining Armour.”
“Brian May is an acclaimed musician and songwriter, founding member of the rock group Queen,” reads his official profile/bio for the 2022 Honours List. “In 2020 he was named Greatest Guitarist of All Time by Total Guitar Magazine. Queen’s performance at Live Aid in 1985 is acknowledged as the greatest live set in history. He famously opened The Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002 performing live on Buckingham Palace roof – and 20 years later returned to open the Platinum Jubilee concert atop the Victoria Monument.
“He is also an accomplished astrophysicist, now attached as stereoscopist to many NASA Space exploration teams. He re-established the London Stereoscopic Company in 2008, was co-founder of Asteroid Day in 2015, for the protection of Earth from asteroid strikes, and was Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University from 2008-2013.
“His work defending Britain’s wild animals led him to found the Save-Me Trust in 2009, which is his continuing passion, campaigning for the rights of foxes and badgers, and hosting an active wildlife rescue operation.
Queen drummer Roger Taylor was made an OBE in the 2020 New Year Honours. See also:

David Lee Roth revisits Van Halen club days on The Roth Show
David Lee Roth revisits Van Halen’s club days in the latest episode of The Roth Show.
The rocker shares multiple stories from the band’s days on the southern California club circuit in the early 1970s, detailing things like how they extended the lifespan of guitar strings to save money, and how every dollar they earned went back into the group.
The episode also sees Roth stream his 2020 song “Somewhere Over The Rainbow Bar And Grill”, a track from an unreleased album he recorded with guitarist John 5 in 2014 that the singer offered as a public tribute to Eddie Van Halen in the weeks following his passing.
The tune – whose title namechecks the famous Sunset Strip bar and restaurant of the same name and its upstairs private club “Over The Rainbow” – specifically references the period just prior to Van Halen securing a record deal with Warner Brothers in 1977, which would see the release of their self-titled debut the following year.
The second episode of the second season of The Roth Show comes on the heels of the release of the first episode in the latest edition of the series.
Roth also recently shared a new recording of the 1980 Van Halen classic, “Everybody Wants Some!!”

David Lee Roth reminisces about Eddie Van Halen on new episode of The Roth Show
David Lee Roth reminisces about his late bandmate, Eddie Van Halen, on a new episode of The Roth Show.
In the Season 2 opener, Roth recalls Van Halen’s days on the southern California club circuit in the early 1970s, among other things, before sharing his thoughts about the guitarist, who passed away in the fall of 2020.
“My dear departed Ed, boy I miss him…I had a ball with Ed,” shares Roth (as transcribed by hennemusic). “Walt Disney said ‘you know what? My love affair with Mickey Mouse was better than any love affair with a woman I ever had.’ I gotta tell ya: playing with Ed, writing songs with Ed, presenting those songs – that was better than any love affair I ever had. And some of those songs I think might last forever…or ‘until the last syllable of time’, like Shakespeare said. They became anthems.”
The new episode also sees Roth – who announced last fall he would retire from music – discuss his current status briefly while commenting on America’s love of “the comeback.”
With more than 80 million albums sold worldwide, Van Halen were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007; the band performed their final concert at the Hollywood Bowl in October of 2015.

Iron Maiden share behind the scenes tour video
Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson is sharing behind the scenes video from the band’s recently-completed Legacy Of The Beast world tour.
The multi-years series – which opened in the spring of 2018 – wrapped up in late Tampa, FL in late October.
“On behalf of the band, myself and all at Phantom, we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made this Legacy tour such a special and memorable experience,” says manager Rod Smallwood. “First and most importantly you, the fans, especially those affected by problems caused by the global pandemic which led to the 2020 European stadium shows having to be rescheduled not just once but twice!
"Your patience and good-will in holding on to your tickets and waiting until we could finally bring the Legacy show to you was very much appreciated. You truly are the best and playing to over 3 million of you over the extended tour was a hell of an achievement so thanks to each and every one of you for making this both possible and also making it incredible fun for the band who enjoyed pretty much every minute on stage.
“We’d also like to thank our brilliant touring Killer Krew - both the longstanding and newer members to the Maiden family, who never cease to rise to any challenges thrown their way - and there were a few - no mean feat considering this tour covered 33 countries and 139 shows played since we started in Tallinn way back on May 26 2018.”
In addition to thanking concert promoters and the artist who opened for Iron Maiden during the tour, Smallwood adds: “We are all now going to take a well-earned break and we’ll be back again next year with a great new show, The Future Past Tour playing just Europe this time as the 2022 Legacy tour was such a long run to enable us to see as many of you fans as possible post-pandemic. However, The Future Past Tour will continue into 2024 and who knows where it will go… so stay tuned!!"
The Future Past Tour is currently set to open in Slovenia in late May.

Journey guitarist Neal Schon files new legal action against Jonathan Cain
Neal Schon has filed a new legal action against Jonathan Cain over a performance of a Journey classic during a recent political event.
According to Variety, Cain performed “Don’t Stop Believin’” during an event for Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, FL last month, which led to Schon filing a cease-and-desist order against his bandmate.
Cain has long been a member of the former president’s inner circle; his wife, Paula White, is a televangelist and Trump’s spiritual advisor.
“Although Mr. Cain is free to express his personal beliefs and associations, when he does that on behalf of Journey or for the band, such conduct is extremely deleterious to the Journey brand as it polarizes the band’s fans and outreach. Journey is not, and should not be, political,” reads the letter, in part. "Mr. Cain's unauthorized affiliation of Journey with the politics of Donald Trump has the band's fans up in arms, as is demonstrated by a sample of the attached emails and Twitter comments. This has caused, and continues to cause, irreparable harm to the Journey brand, its fan base and earning potential, especially in light of the forthcoming tour.
“Mr. Cain has no right to use Journey for politics,” the letter continues. “His politics should be his own personal business. He should not be capitalizing on Journey’s brand to promote his personal political or religious agenda to the detriment of the band,” calling it a “harmful use of the brand.”
The political event performance is the latest in a series of legal issues within the Journey organization in recent months, which include a trademark dispute with former member Steve Perry and a disagreement between Schon and Cain over alleged financial issues.
Journey recently announced dates for the 2023 Freedom tour of North America, and has just released a new package, “Live In Concert At Lollapalooza”, which captures the band’s headlining set at Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL in July of 2021.
Journey delivered the No. 1 Rock News Story Of The Year and were named the No. 2 Rock News Artist Of The Year as part of the 2022 hennemusic Rock News Awards.

Queen smash Bohemian Rhapsody tops 2 billion Spotify streams
Queen has revealed that their 1975 classic, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, has just registered 2 Billion streams on Spotify.
The lead single from the band’s fourth album, “A Night At The Opera”, was written by Freddie Mercury, who oversaw the complex song’s full creation in the studio during three weeks of recording.
Prior to heading out on the road in support of their fourth studio album, Queen filmed a video that would be offered to media to promote the song while they were on tour; directed by Bruce Gowers and costing just £4500, the “Bohemian Rhapsody” clip is widely regarded to have given birth to the practice of creating music videos to boost sales, even though they had been previously done by artists for years.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” went on to become the only song to sell over a million copies on two occasions in the UK, is the most-streamed song of the 20th Century, and in March 2021 reached the extremely rare RIAA Diamond status in the US, making Queen the first British band ever to earn this award … while the promo became the first pre-1990’s music video to pass the 1 billion views milestone on YouTube.
The song’s life was extended when it became the title of Queen’s 2018 biopic; directed by Dexter Fletcher, the film – which follows Queen from their formation in 1970 through to their legendary 1985 Live Aid appearance – won four Academy Awards including Best Actor to Rami Malek for his portrayal of Mercury, and earned more than $900 million dollars at the box office to become the highest-grossing music biopic in history.
