The Rolling Stones expand Extra Licks series with 1997 concert footage

The Rolling Stones continued their new, limited-edition weekly streaming concert series, “Extra Licks”, on May 31 with footage from a 1997 performance in Chicago, IL.

The band were filmed at the city’s Soldier Field during the opening two nights of the Bridges To Babylon tour in support of the 1997 album of the same name.

Last year, the Stones issued a full concert from the series on the 2019 “Bridges To Bremen” package.

Footage of the 2.5 hour German concert before 40,000 fans has been meticulously restored from the original masters, and the audio remixed and remastered from the live multitrack recordings.

The 1997/98 tour marked a pair of firsts for the Stones, including the band’s use of a permanent B-stage in the middle of the crowd, and the opportunity for fans to vote via the group's website for a track they wanted to hear at the show in their city.

Bruce Springsteen guests on Dropkick Murphys livestream concert

Bruce Springsteen made a guest appearance on the May 29 “Straight Outta Fenway” livestream concert by the Dropkick Murphys.

While performing before an empty Fenway Park in their hometown, the Boston outfit were joined by the New Jersey rocker remotely during the free online event, with frontman Ken Casey welcoming the singer via the ballpark’s big screen.

“Is New Jersey in the house?” asked Casey, as Springsteen appeared from his home studio in the Garden State.

The pairing launched into their 2013 collaboration, “Rose Tattoo”, before delivering Springsteen’s 206 track, “American Land.”

According to the Dropkick Murphys, the event featured some groundbreaking milestones, including their status as being the first band to play a full show in an empty sports stadium, and, the first group “to play right on the dirt and grass of the infield diamond.”

John Fogerty celebrates 75th birthday with Dodger Stadium performance

Creedence Clearwater Revival legend John Fogerty celebrated his 75th birthday on May 28 with a performance at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

“It took 75 years and it’s a little different than I envisioned,” says Fogerty at the empty ballpark. “Now on my birthday, I get to fulfill my dream playing ‘Centerfield’ in centerfield with my kids on the team. A home run!

“Hopefully it won't be long until we are able to have baseball back. Until then... ‘Put me in coach, I'm ready to play!’”

“Centerfield” is the title track to Fogerty’s 1985 record of the same name; his third release delivered his first and only US No. 1 album, which went on to sell more than 2 million copies in the country.

The tune is one of seven quarantine jam performances of classics hits by the rocker and his family during the pandemic that were released on a new EP, “Fogerty’s Factory.”

Pink Floyd expand daily playlist with rare version of Have A Cigar

Pink Floyd have expanded their newly-launched “daily evolving playlist” with audio of a rare, alternate version of their 1975 classic, “Have A Cigar.”

Recorded during sessions for the band’s “Wish You Were Here” album and originally issued on the “Immersion” 2011 box set, this version features David Gilmour and Roger Waters on vocals instead of UK folk singer Roy Harper, who appeared on the original release.

Pink Floyd kicked off their daily playlist on May 22 with audio of a rare, 1974 performance of “The Dark Side Of The Moon” classic, “Us & Them.”

Entitled “Syd, Roger, Richard, Nick and David – An Evolving Pink Floyd Playlist”, the feature will see the band add a new song from their catalogue to the playlist via Spotify and other streaming outlets each day – from the best known classics to deeper album tracks.

Each Friday, as a bonus, Pink Floyd will add one of the currently unavailable bonus tracks that were featured in the “Immersion” boxsets a few years back.

“During this period of lockdown, isolation and uncertainty,” says Pink Floyd, “it might help to make time each day to immerse yourself in music; each day, this will build into the perfect playlist to help you navigate these challenging times.

“We hope you enjoy reconnecting with these tracks over the coming weeks, and would love to hear your suggestions for what you think could be added to the playlist…”

Neil Young to launch official bootleg series

Neil Young has announced plans to launch a series of official bootlegs.

The project will see the rocker deliver official versions of widely-circulated, fan-sourced recordings of live performances that have been available on the bootleg market for years.

Young previewed the series with artwork from a bootleg of an early 1970s solo concert.

“’I’m Happy That Y’all Came Down’ is a bootleg that has been circulating for almost 50 years,” writes the singer on his Neil Young Archives site. “Rubber Dubber put it out in 1971. It’s an audience recording of a solo show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion February 1st of that year.

“The big difference with this NYA Official Bootleg and many in the Official Bootleg series will be that the music is coming from our original master tapes.”

“We have ripped off all of the original art from the bootlegs, continuing the tradition,”
adds Young. “No expense will be spared. The only thing different will be the radically better sound from our masters.

“We are going full bore with our series right now, so write letters in to me with your favorite bootlegs and we will find them and use the best audio we can locate, either from the NYA vaults or somewhere else. Watch for this coming soon. We are building it starting today.”

Young has been busy working on his extensive archives over the past few years; he will release a previously-shelved 1970s album, “Homegrown”, on June 19; recorded in 1974 and early 1975, the record features appearances by Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson of The Band, and Emmylou Harris.

The summer series – which was due to begin May 31 in Tbilisi, Georgia – included a mix of solo and festival appearances across the region before wrapping up at the end of July.

“To all of my friends in Europe, due to COVID-19 and the government restrictions my upcoming ‘Here To Love Tour’ dates are regretfully postponed,” says Kravitz. “I was so looking forward to come play and celebrate life with you, but at the moment it is important to make sure that you all, as well as my band and crew, remain safe and healthy.

“More details to come, and I’m hoping to be there soon.

"We are all one. Let’s band together, be kind and Let Love Rule.”

Kravitz produced and recorded “Raise Vibration” at his Bahamas studio; the record went Top 5 in several countries while debuting and peaking at No. 43 on the US Billboard 200.

Pearl Jam among acts confirmed for Washington state COVID-19 Relief concert

Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews and Brandi Carlile are among the acts confirmed to perform during “All In WA”, a virtual concert to assist COVID-19 relief efforts in Washington state.

Set for broadcast on Wednesday, June 10 at 7 PT/10 ET via Amazon Music’s Twitch channel and Seattle-area NBC affiliates, the event will be streamed via allinwa.org and available later on-demand via Amazon Prime Video.

All In Washington (All In WA) is a coalition of philanthropic, business, and community leaders coming together to address the hardships local communities are facing by providing food donations, housing assistance for youth and families, small businesses support, and health services for essential workers.

Washington's need for additional philanthropic support to help with COVID-19 recovery is clear: one in five workers across the state has filed for unemployment insurance and are at risk of housing, food and/or economic insecurity due to a decrease in wages as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and small businesses are struggling to survive.

Amazon has stepped in to assist the fundraising efforts by covering the production costs associated with the relief concert, with founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announcing that he will personally match individual donations under $1 million to All In WA causes, up to a total of $25 million.

"Washington state was at the forefront of combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, and our state will be at the forefront of a safe recovery," says Governor Jay Inslee. "All In WA is helping to fill the gaps in funding across the state to provide relief to those who are suffering and to lay the groundwork to restart our economy in a safe, supported, and sensible way. I'd like to thank Jeff Bezos for his pledge to match donations, and all the other generous donors who are making this possible."

The relief concert will also see appearances by Ciara, Russell Wilson, Pete Carroll, Macklemore, Joel McHale, and Sir Mix-A-Lot, among others.

For more information and/or to donate directly, visit allinwa.org.

Pearl Jam recently released a new album, “Gigaton”; produced by Josh Evans and the group, the project debuted at No. 5 on the US Billboard 200.

Sammy Hagar performs Little Richard tribute

Sammy Hagar And The Circle perform a tribute to the late Little Richard in the seventh and latest installment of the band’s “Lockdown Sessions” series.

The group deliver a version of Richard’s 1957 single, “Keep A-Knockin'”, in honor of the rock pioneer, who passed away from bone cancer in Nashville, TN on May 9 at the age of 87.

“I had the hardest time with this one because every time I came in singing, I started singing Led Zeppelin ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’!,” says Hagar. “It took me three damn takes. My favorite drummer and my favorite singer of all time – love this one hope you do too. Long live the music of John Bonham and Little Richard!”

Previous Lockdown Sessions have featured an original jam, “Funky Feng Shui”, and versions of classic cuts by The Who, Van Halen, Bob Marley, AC/DC and Buffalo Springfield.

Hagar And The Circle recently cancelled a planned summer US tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the three-month series, with guests Night Ranger, was scheduled to begin July 9 in West Palm Beach, FL.

Judas Priest singer Rob Halford updates memoir release date

Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford has confirmed a new release date for his autobiography.

Previously scheduled to be available on October 20, “Confess” will now arrive on September 29 via Hachette Books.

Halford worked on his life story with Ian Gittins – co-writer of the New York Times bestseller, “The Heroin Diaries” by Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue.

Known as “The Metal God” by his devoted, global fan base, the rocker has always subverted the norm, and “Confess” will offer readers a compelling and honest look at the struggles he has faced with addiction and his sexuality, as well as exploring his music and his many brushes with controversy.

“‘Confess‘ is a unique once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to expose every facet of myself,” says Halford. “Digging deep with nothing to hide and nothing to fear was in many ways exciting, fun, disturbing, terrifying and cathartic. I’ve held nothing back. It’s time for me to Confess…”

Halford and Judas Priest recently announced a series of rescheduled dates for their 50th anniversary European tour, which has been moved from 2020 to next year due to the coronavirus pandemic. See also:

INXS to release restored 1991 concert film Live Baby Live

INXS will release a newly-restored edition of their 1991 concert film, “Live Baby Live”, on June 26.

Directed by David Mallet, the project captures the Australian outfit performing live at London’s Wembley Stadium before a sold-out crowd of over 72,000 fans.

The 2020 release follows the restored film’s successful debut theatrical run in late 2019, playing on over a thousand screens from Sydney to Stockholm and London to Los Angeles.

The home entertainment release features the film presented in widescreen for the first time, and in over 20 times greater resolution (on 4K UHD blu-ray) than the original DVD release.

“Live Baby Live” has been meticulously restored over a twelve-month period from the original 35mm negative to 4K Ultra HD, and during the process a previously thought lost performance of the “X” album track, “Lately”, was discovered and reinstated into the film.

To accompany the visual upgrade, the audio is now presented in Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio (Blu-ray only), DTS 5.1 Surround and Dolby 5.1 Surround - all created by Giles Martin, the band’s Executive Music Director, and Sam Okell at Abbey Road Studios.

The full Wembley soundtrack is available in the blu-ray and DVD bundles, plus “Shining Star”, the studio track recorded the day after the show in London which then became the lead single from the original live compilation album in 1991.

“Live Baby Live” will be available on digital download, 4K Ultra High Definition Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD; the Blu-ray and DVD sets will also include a double CD of the newly remixed soundtrack.

The physical packages feature new 4K-sourced photography from the show, new notes from the band and an essay by broadcaster and uber INXS fan Jamie East, who was in the crowd that day.

Cheap Trick finishes new studio album

Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen says the band have completed work on a new studio album.

"We have a new record that's coming out," Neilsen tells Marci Wiser of 95.5 KLOS Los Angeles. "We are signed to BMG, and the record is finished. So we're just kind of waiting till all this junk subsides," he adds, referring to the coronavirus pandemic.

Led by the Top 10 success of the single, “I Want You To Want Me”, Cheap Trick’s breakthrough record reached No. 4 on the US Billboard 200 on its way to sales of more than 1 million copies in the country.

Metallica stream 2014 By Request concert

Metallica are sharing video of a 2014 concert in Lima, Peru in the latest installment of their weekly streaming series Metallica Mondays.

The March 20, 2014 gig at the Estadio Nacional was the third stop on the group’s By Request Tour, where fans vote for the songs they wanted to see performed in their city.

The trek saw the live debut of the single, “Lords Of Summer”, which was later included on the deluxe edition of 2016’s “Hardwired…To Self Destruct.”

The Lima event is the tenth live show streamed during the Metallica Monday series.

Joe Walsh of The Eagles launches public radio show

Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh has launched a weekly program on a Los Angeles public radio station.

May 23 saw the debut broadcast of “The Joe Walsh Old-Fashioned Rock n’ Roll Radio Show” on KCSN and KSBR 88.5 in the Los Angeles area.

A longtime listener and contributor to 88.5-FM, Walsh approached the station with the idea after the pandemic grounded Walsh and his Eagles bandmates from a planned summer tour.

“This public radio station serves the community I live in and is funded by listeners,” says Walsh. “I like that men with ties don’t decide what I listen to. My show will be a mixture of music I love, music I think people will want to hear and stories behind some of these songs that I’m pretty sure no one knows about. Hopefully, the show will generate some more listeners and support for the station, and we will have a lot of fun in the process.”

“Tune in 6 p.m. every Saturday while we are homebound.”

“Joe will have free reign to essentially take over the programming duties for 88.5-FM for his hour,” adds General Manager Patrick Osburn. “His playlist and blend of stories and anecdotes should make for an engaging 60 minutes. Being entertainment royalty and one of the many local fixtures of the SoCal/Hollywood community, we anticipate Joe’s rolodex of potential guests runs deep, so we feel great about giving him the keys to the car! It’s flattering to have rock legends listening and financially supporting the station.”

Listeners can hear the weekly show on the KCSN and KSBR 88.5 HD1 channels, or via the 88.5 app, and online at 885FM.org.

John Fogerty performs classic 70s hit City Of New Orleans

John Fogerty and his family are streaming video of a quarantine jam performance of the 1970s classic, “City Of New Orleans.”

Originally written and recorded by Chicago-based singer-songwriter Steve Goodman in 1971, the tune became a US Top 20 hit a year later for Arlo Guthrie and, again, for Willie Nelson in 1984.

Fogerty is scheduled to play a fall series of dates as part of a residency at the Encore Theater at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.

The nine-show run at the Encore Theater in November will mark the final dates of the rocker’s extensive “My 50 Year Trip” tour, which he launched last year while marking the anniversary of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s milestone performance at Woodstock.

Last fall, Fogerty released “50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks”; recorded at Red Rock Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO last June, the project captures the guitarist in concert on his anniversary tour with a setlist that mixes solo hits with CCR classics.

Queen guitarist Brian May recovering from recent heart attack

Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed the news that he is recovering following a recent heart attack and follow-up surgery procedure.

The 72-year-old rocker – who made headlines following what was described as “a gardening accident” earlier this month – updated fans on the fallout from that situation in a new Instagram post and companion video.

"I told you that I had a ripped muscle,” May begins. “Now that was the way I was diagnosed and we thought it was like a bizarre gardening accident….But, anyway, it turned out to be not really the case.” While an MRI confirmed the muscle tear, May continued to experience significant back pain; a second MRI revealed a compressed sciatic nerve, which has been resolved through therapy.

"But in the middle of it, the rest of the story is a little more bizarre and a bit more shocking," May continues. "Well I was shocked anyway. I thought I was a very healthy guy and everyone says you've got a great blood pressure, you've got great heart rate and everything and I keep fit on me bike and everything - good diet = not too much fat.

“Anyway I had a, in the middle of the whole saga of the painful backside, I had a small heart attack and I say small, you know. It's not something that did me any harm. It was about 40 minutes of pain in the chest and tightness and that feeling in the arms and sweating and, you know, you kind of know, you've heard and, actually this is a heart attack, and cut a rather long story short, my wonderful doctor drove me to the hospital himself in his Corniche, and I went straight into what they called the 'Cath Room', I think, and had an angiogram. Now that's the thing where they stick something in your wrist here and it goes all the way up to your heart and it can go into the arteries of your heart and find out what's wrong and it can find out in a way that nothing else can - it seems to me, you know - nothing else can tell you what the angiogram can tell you.”

Explaining that “there was a lot of pressure because I actually turned out to have three arteries which were congested and in danger of blocking the supply of blood to my heart", doctors gave the Queen legend the option of a triple-bypass open heart surgery, or, the installation of three stents that would keep the arteries open.

“I opted for the stents and the next day, actually the same day, I went in there and they did it,” says May. “When I came round, it was as if nothing had happened. I couldn't feel that they'd been in here. I couldn't feel anything and I still can’t. It's been amazing.”

“I have this feeling that like everybody from the age of 60 onwards should have an angiogram whether they have any problems or not, because there's the only thing that can tell you,”
he adds. “I had no idea. I had great electrocardiograms and whatever. You know nothing could tell me that I was about to be in real, real trouble because I could have died from that, from the blockages that were there.

“I think there's some lessons to be learned I must say, and I think we've all got to really look at ourselves as we get to the kind of later - to the Autumn years - and what seems to be a very healthy heart may not be and I would get it checked if I were you. I think I will get it checked from time to time now but I'm very grateful.

“I'm incredibly grateful that I now have a life to lead again and it's one of those things, you know. I was actually very near death because of this, but the pain that I had was from something completely different - funny how things work - but I'm good. I’m here and I'm ready to rock and God bless you all.”

May added: “Sheer Heart Attack eh ? Well, I think I always worried a little bit about that album title. I wondered if it might upset some people who had actually had heart attacks. I’m actually quite relieved now that I’m in that club - and I don’t find it upsetting at all! Take. care folks.”

Journey debut new members with Don’t Stop Believin’ performance

Journey debuted its new live lineup during an appearance on the May 23 UNICEF Won’t Stop global relief concert special.

Following a brief 80s stint with the group, bassist Randy Jackson has rejoined the band, while drummer Narada Michael Walden steps in on drums alongside new addition, keyboardist/vocalist Jason Derlatka.

The lineup delivered “Don’t Stop Believin’” on the special, which also featured performances from Cher, Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton, Rod Stewart, Sting and more.

"We were asked by UNICEF if we could come together to do this on Wednesday morning,” says Journey founder Neal Schon and longtime member Jonathan Cain. “We admire their work and we dropped everything to do this in self isolation. Their "UNICEF Won't Stop" campaign is great and we can only say don't stop believin'. Right now, more than ever, we can each make a difference if we don't stop believin'."

For more information on the event, visit unicefwontstop.org.

Following their performance, Schon shared the news on social media, writing: “Ok friends word is out! @yo_randyjackson RJ the Big Dawg is our new Bass player again,” and, “Word is out! @naradamwalden Narada Michael Walden is our new Drummer! Multi talented songwriter producer / Mahavishnu orchestra. The J Boyz will have a new Strut.”

Jackson and Walden have joined Journey’s touring lineup following the firing of longtime bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith over the pair’s alleged efforts to take control over the band’s name; Valory has since countersued former bandmates Schon and Cain over the issue.

The 2020 version of Journey were gearing up for an extensive North American tour, which was recently cancelled due the ongoing pandemic.

“Journey is an ever-changing unstoppable force,” explained Schon on Twitter. “This is a completely new chapter for us and can’t wait to get to it!”
