Pearl Jam mark 20th anniversary of Roskilde concert tragedy

Pearl Jam have released a statement marking the 20th anniversary of a concert tragedy at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark that left nine fans dead after being trampled in a massive, muddy mosh pit near the stage.

On the road in support of their sixth album, “Binaural”, the Seattle band were part of the lineup for the June 30, 2000 show at the annual event. As their evening set got underway, reports indicate the surge of fans in front of the stage saw some fall to the ground as some concertgoers tried to offer assistance, while others continued rocking out, unaware of the danger.

According to the original Rolling Stone report, site security alerted organizers about the situation, which led to frontman Eddie Vedder initially asking the crowd to step back to give everyone more space as the injured were attended to on site before the concert was shut down less than an hour into Pearl Jam’s performance.

Following the Roskilde incident, the group cancelled the final two shows of a European trek, later referencing the tragedy in their 2002 track, “Love Boat Captain.”

“It's been 20 years since that day,” writes guitarist Stone Gossard in a statement on behalf of Pearl Jam. “A normal festival show day...show up 5 hours ahead. Wait for your slot. I barely remember it...Sunny, I think. Lou Reed played, I think. Then rain and wind.

“But nothing has been the same since. An unexpected moment intervened that forever changed all involved.

“The 9 young men who were trampled. The lives of their families and loved ones who had to endure imagining their deaths over and over and the reality of never seeing them again. Every person at the festival who witnessed what was happening and tried to do something, maybe pulling someone up, or not being able to...And those, like our band, who never realized anything was going on at all until it was too late...All of us Forever waiting for the news to be different.”

“20 years later, our band has 11 more kids, all of them precious, and another 20 years between us,”
Gossard continues. “Our understanding of gravity and the loss felt by the parents of those boys has grown exponentially magnified as we imagine our own children dying in circumstances like Roskilde 2000. It is unthinkable, yet there it is. Our worst nightmare.

“Every day our hearts continue to ache and our stomachs turn at the thoughts of those young men dying and of what might have been different, if only...but nothing changes. And our pain is a thousandth of that of the families.... the moms and dads, sisters and brothers, best friends...

“Our deepest condolences and apologies to the families who lost their boys that day. To the brothers and sisters, grandmas and grandpas and friends, all who lost their precious being.”

“Everyone failed to live up to what was needed in those hours before and in those days following the tragedy. The festival, the media, us included,”
he adds. “We retreated and became angry after many reports implied PJ was responsible. Our words were nothing to help at that point. We hid and hoped that it wasn't our fault. We have been trying our best to unhide ever since.

“We've met some of the families over the years. With some, we have forged strong friendships...sharing and supporting each other. Some we do not know.

“Young men who loved PJ and wanted to get up close. That was the through-line of all those who passed that day. We hope we will never know what that loss feels like. We hope. We are forever in the shadow of your pain and loss and we accept that shade and are forever grateful to share that sacred space. The space created by the absence of those 9 young men...”

Pearl Jam accompanied their statement on social media with a video clip featuring nine flames set to a black background and accompanied by a live snippet of "Love Boat Captain."

Lenny Kravitz details Let Love Rule memoir

Lenny Kravitz will publish his memoir, “Let Love Rule”, on October 6.

Co-written by biographer and songwriter David Ritz, the project sees the rocker share stories of his early years, culminating in the 1989 release of his debut album of the same name.

“Writing this memoir has been a beautiful and interesting experience taking me through the first 25 years of my life, from birth to release of my first album," says Kravitz. "That journey, full of adventure, was where I found myself and my voice. Through that experience, love was the force that paved the way and love became my message.

“I see my story as a suite of songs that have a magical connection. I never understood that connection until I sat down to write. It was then that the magic started to flow.”

“Let Love Rule” covers a vast canvas stretching from Manhattan's Upper East Side, Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant, Los Angeles's Baldwin Hills, Beverly Hills, and finally to France, England and Germany.

The cast of characters surrounding Lenny is extraordinary: his father, Sy, a high-powered news executive; his mother, Roxie Roker, a television star; and Lisa Bonet, the young actress who becomes his muse.

It's the story of a wildly creative kid who, despite tough struggles at school and extreme tension at home, finds salvation in music. We see him grow as a musician and ultimately a master songwriter, producer, and performer. We also see Lenny's spiritual growth-and the powerful way in which spirit informs his music.

“Whether recording, performing, or writing a book,” explains the singer, “my art is about listening to the inspiration inside and then sharing it with people. Art must bring the world closer together.”

“My life is all about opposites,” writes Kravitz in the book. “Black and white. Jewish and Christian. The Jackson 5 and Led Zeppelin. I accepted my Gemini soul. I owned it. I adored it. Yings and yangs mingled in various parts of my heart and mind, giving me balance and fueling my curiosity and comfort.”

The Rolling Stones to screen Havana Moon at drive-ins

The Rolling Stones will screen their 2016 concert film, “Havana Moon”, at drive-ins across North America this summer.

Directed by Paul Dugdale, the project captures the band live before an estimated 500,000 fans in a free event that also marked their first-ever show in Cuba, which is considered a landmark event for rock n' roll in the country as the genre was banned for decades following the Cuban revolution.

As restrictions relaxed amongst lessened political tensions, The Rolling Stones performed the country's largest open-air rock concert ever, which came five days after sitting U.S. President Barack Obama's first visit to the country.

Havana Moon” will be seen in drive-in theatres across the U.S. and Canada for an exclusive summer concert experience beginning July 10, observing specific state and provincial reopening guidelines in each country.

"I'm so thrilled that Havana Moon has found its way back onto the big screen, particularly during such a strange time for live music,” says Dugdale. “The Rolling Stones concert was the first of its kind in Havana, and I hope the unprecedented absence of live music during the COVID-19 crisis means this film brings almost as much elation and joy to those watching it now through CineLife as it did the people of Havana back on that special night. Turn it up loud!"

Metallica stream 1999 Bogota concert

Metallica are sharing video of a 1999 concert in Bogota, Colombia in the latest installment of their weekly streaming series.

“Metallica Mondays takes a trip back to 1999!,” says the band. “We dug through the dusty, old VHS tapes in Lars’ vault to uncover Live in Bogotá - May 2, 1999, which happens to be the first gig we ever played in Colombia.”

Metallica were filmed during the Garage Remains The Same Tour in support of their 1998 covers record, “Garage Inc.”

The project saw the band deliver their versions of classic tracks by artist that influenced them, including Black Sabbath, Diamond Head, Queen, Motorhead and Budgie, among others.

The year-long trek opened in Toronto in November 1998 and saw Metallica play 58 shows – including the 25th anniversary edition of Woodstock – before it wrapped up at New York’s Madison Square Garden in November of 1999.

John Fogerty performs track from 1998 Grammy Award winning album

John Fogerty and his family are streaming video of a quarantine jam performance of a solo track from the 1990s.

“It’s the first week of summer!,” says Fogerty. ”Celebrate with your families and Fogerty’s Factory while jamming to ‘Blue Moon Nights’ from my 1997 album, ‘Blue Moon Swamp.’”

The Creedence Clearwater Revival legend’s fifth studio record, “Blue Moon Swamp” topped the charts in Finland and Sweden, was Top 5 in Norway, and reached No. 37 on the US Billboard 200.

The set featured a variety of players, including legendary Booker T. & the M.G.'s bassist Donald Dunn, renowned Cuban percussionist Luis Conte, and drummer Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

“Blue Moon Swamp” was nominated for a pair of 1998 Grammy Awards; it was named Best Rock Album at the 40th annual ceremony – ahead of records by Aerosmith (“Nine Lives”), Foo Fighters (“The Color And The Shape”), The Rolling Stones (“Bridges To Babylon”) and U2 (“Pop”) – while the track "Blueboy" was in the running for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, but lost out to a tune by Bob Dylan.

Neil Young debuts Homegrown in UK Top 5

Neil Young had debuted his recently-released 1970s album, “Homegrown”, in the UK Top 5.

According to the Official Charts Company, the record opens at No. 2 on the Top 100 behind only “Rough And Rowdy Ways”, the new project from Bob Dylan.

“Homegrown” was the country’s best-selling vinyl of the week, as well, while helping deliver Young his 11th UK Top 10 album and highest since the No. 2 placement of 1994’s “Sleeps With Angels.”

Young originally recorded “Homegrown” in 1974 and early 1975, but shelved the set while moving on to other projects.

“I apologize,”
shared the rocker on a recent note to fans on his Neil Young Archives site. “This album ‘Homegrown’ should have been there for you a couple of years after ‘Harvest’. It’s the sad side of a love affair. The damage done. The heartache. I just couldn’t listen to it. I wanted to move on.

“So I kept it to myself, hidden away in the vault, on the shelf, in the back of my mind….but I should have shared it. It’s actually beautiful. That’s why I made it in the first place. Sometimes life hurts. You know what I mean. This is the one that got away.”

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament releases new EP

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament surprise-released a new EP, “American Death Squad”, on June 26.

"In the days following the postponement of our tour, I found it necessary to find an outlet for the energy we had created going into the tour,” Ament explains. “Pivot was the word of March. So, every morning, I retreated to the studio with the goal of writing a song every day, no matter how s***e.

“Days of isolating and watching the news of the destruction courtesy the virus (and the ineptitude of our leadership or as named here, the American Death Squad) made for vivid dreams and a helplessness. These were some of the first songs out of the gate. Raw and succinct."

The rocker is highlighting the 5-song EP’s arrival with a video for the project’s lead track, "The Divine Perfume."

Following its digital release, “American Death Squad” will be available via 7-inch vinyl and is expected to ship in August.

Ament issued his third solo album, “Heaven/Hell”, in 2018.

Pearl Jam released a new album, “Gigaton”, in March; produced by Josh Evans and the group, the project debuted at No. 5 on the US Billboard 200.

The Seattle outfit postponed a spring tour of North America and a summer trek across Europe due to the ongoing global health crisis.

The Scorpions are seeking fan submissions for an upcoming music video for their new single, “Sign Of Hope.”

“Show us your ‘signs’ of hope!” says The Scorpions. “We want to use our new music video as a platform to spread a little hope in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

First issued in late April, the German rockers recorded the tune during writing sessions for the follow-up to 2015’s “Return To Forever.”

Neil Young is streaming a barnyard edition video for the title track to his recently-released 1970s album, “Homegrown.”

The rocker delivers an acoustic run through the song before a crowded yard of chickens on his property, where he has hosted a series of Fireside Session performances.

Also included are the first recordings of “Homegrown,” “White Line,” and “Star Of Bethlehem” – different versions of which would all later appear on other Young albums, while “Love Is A Rose” and “Little Wing” have been previously-released on the 1977 compilation, “Decade.”

David Bowie previews unreleased 1995 live album

David Bowie’s team are streaming a 1995 live version of his 1980 track, “Teenage Wildlife”, as a preview to the July 3 release of “Ouvrez Le Chien (Live Dallas 95).”

The iconic rocker was captured in performance at the Starplex Amphitheater in Dallas, TX on October 13, 1995 during the US leg of the Outside Tour.

The phrase “Ouvrez Le Chien” (translating from the French to “Open The Dog”) originally appeared in the song “All The Madmen” from Bowie’s 1970 record, “The Man Who Sold The World” (which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year), albeit without the z; the singer also used the phrase for his 1993 song “Buddha Of Suburbia”, once again spelling “ouvre" without a Z; it was later added when the phrase and its English translation were prominently featured in the stage set of the 1995 Outside Tour.

In addition to the Dallas concert footage, “Ouvrez Le Chien” also features two bonus tracks – “Moonage Daydream” and “Under Pressure” – recorded live at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK in December 1995; previously available on the “Hallo Spaceboy” CD single, both tracks are making their streaming debut.

“Ouvrez Le Chien” follows May’s arrival of “LiveAndWell.com” as the second in a series of three David Bowie live recordings from the 90s that will be issued digitally over the coming months.

Hear unreleased Tom Petty demo of You Don’t Know How It Feels

Tom Petty’s family are sharing the late rocker’s original 8-track home recording demo of his 1994 hit, “You Don’t Know How It Feels.”

The early version of the lead single from Petty’s second solo record, “Wildflowers”, is accompanied by a new, animated lyric video created and directed by Ben “Blaze” Brooks and Aaron Hymes.

The demo features slightly different lyrics than the final album version and introduces a line from another track, “Crawling Back To You”, giving fans some insight into Petty’s songwriting process as he plays all of the instruments on the recording.

“You Don’t Know How It Feels” was a Top 15 US hit for Petty; a companion music video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video in 1995, while the album reached No. 8 on the US Billboard 200 on its way to sales of more than 3 million copies in the country.

After Petty originally wrote and recorded “Wildflowers” as a double album, his record label convinced him to trim it back to a single record; fans will get to hear that material when the demo will be included as part of a forthcoming reissue project due later this year, according to Rolling Stone.

“The family and the band are in a joyful process of discovering the Wildflowers sessions and demos and wanted to share a tiny bit of that with the fans today,” says Adria Petty on behalf of the Petty Family. “The family and all our engineers and the Heartbreakers have been circling around this project and making it as delightful and completist as possible.

“We’re really pleased to be able to share the second half of the Wildflowers double album. But there are also completist versions of how the sessions evolved. My dad was prolific at that time and there was so much recording done. Coming off the ‘Last Dance with Mary Jane’ session, it was a compete evolution of how dad recorded and how he made space for his own feelings. Wildflowers was very personal for him. He wasn’t hiding behind anything.”

Petty passed away in October of 2017 at the age of 66 in a Santa Monica, CA hospital after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.

Pink Floyd stream rare live version of Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Pink Floyd are streaming rare live audio of a 1974 performance of the “Wish You Were Here” album classic, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.”

The band were captured live during a four-night stand at The Empire Pool (later known as Wembley Arena) in London in November 1974 during a five-week UK tour; it was first released as part of the group’s 2011 “Immersion” series.

The appearances would see early previews of material from “Wish You Were Here”, which wasn’t released until the fall of 1975.

“Arguably an essential song to be on any Pink Floyd playlist!,” says the band. “At this stage, the song was still unreleased, so the audience wouldn't have been familiar with it.”

The group’s recently-launched feature, “Syd, Roger, Richard, Nick and David – An Evolving Pink Floyd Playlist” sees the band add a new song from their catalogue via Spotify and other streaming outlets each day – from the best known classics to deeper album tracks.

Each Friday, as a bonus, Pink Floyd will add one of the currently unavailable bonus tracks that were featured in the “Immersion” box sets a few years back.

Fans choose favorite Metallica song in online vote

Metallica fans have chosen their favorite song by the band in a month-long online vote.

Launched last month, the Some Kinda Bracket tournament pitted 64 tunes against each other in daily matchups as fans whittled the catalog down to two songs: the title track to 1986’s “Master Of Puppets” and their 1988 single, “One.”

“The people have spoken and one single song stands alone above the rest,” says Metallica. “Your champion is ~ drum roll please ~ ‘MASTER OF PUPPETS!’

“Along the way it defeated "Dyers Eve," "Atlas, Rise!," "Ride The Lightning," "Sad But True," "Fade To Black," and "One" in head to head match-ups... no wonder that thing is in the Library of Congress! Thanks for playing along with us! #ObeyYourMaster #SomeKindOfBracket”

The group’s major label debut, “Master Of Puppets” became thrash metal's first platinum album on its way to US sales of more than 6 million copies.

The project was among 25 sound recordings selected for induction into the US Library Of Congress National Recording Registry in 2016.

“The title track starts unsurprisingly enough with a crisp power chord and catchy riff,” highlights the National Recording Registry entry, “but halfway through, the tempo slows and a clean arpeggiated progression, accompanied by cello-like tones, introduces James Hetfield's mid-tempo lead which eschews tapping, sweep picking and, other metal guitar techniques.

“Black Sabbath bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler has commented that Metallica's 1980s output brought the music "‘back to the spirit of [Black] Sabbath’ and, he further emphasizes, ’If we started it, then [Metallica] reinvented it.’”

Pearl Jam stream debut performance of Dance Of The Clairvoyants

Pearl Jam are streaming video of the debut performance of “Dance Of The Clairvoyants” following its inclusion on the June 24 broadcast of “All In WA”, a virtual concert to assist COVID-19 relief efforts in Washington state.

Footage for the “Gigaton” lead single presents each band member in home isolation, with a slight lineup change that sees guitarist Stone Gossard playing bass while bassist Jeff Ament contributes guitar and keyboards on the song.

Airing via Amazon Music’s Twitch channel and Seattle-area NBC affiliates, the event supports All In WA – a coalition of philanthropic, business, and community leaders coming together to address the hardships local communities are facing by providing food donations, housing assistance for youth and families, small businesses support, and health services for essential workers.

"All In WA: A Concert for COVID-19 Relief" also featured appearances by Dave Matthews, Macklemore, Brandi Carlile, Ciara, actor Joel McHale and the Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Russell Wilson.

INXS stream By My Side from restored Live Baby Live concert film

INXS are streaming video of their 1990 single, “By My Side”, ahead of the June 26 release of a newly-restored edition of their 1991 concert film, “Live Baby Live.”

The song was the third track issued from the group’s seventh studio album, “X”, which topped the Australian charts while going Top 5 in the US and several other countries.

Directed by David Mallet, the project captures the Australian band performing live at London’s Wembley Stadium before a sold-out crowd of over 72,000 fans.

The 2020 release follows the restored film’s successful debut theatrical run in late 2019, playing on over a thousand screens from Sydney to Stockholm and London to Los Angeles.

The home entertainment release features the film presented in widescreen for the first time, and in over 20 times greater resolution (on 4K UHD blu-ray) than the original DVD release.

“Live Baby Live” has been meticulously restored over a twelve-month period from the original 35mm negative to 4K Ultra HD, and during the process a previously thought lost performance of the “X” album track, “Lately”, was discovered and reinstated into the film.

To accompany the visual upgrade, the audio is now presented in Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio (Blu-ray only), DTS 5.1 Surround and Dolby 5.1 Surround - all created by Giles Martin, the band’s Executive Music Director, and Sam Okell at Abbey Road Studios.

The full Wembley soundtrack is available in the blu-ray and DVD bundles, plus “Shining Star”, the studio track recorded the day after the show in London which then became the lead single from the original live compilation album in 1991.

Kesha rocks Children Of The Revolution on new T. Rex tribute

Kesha’s cover of the 1972 classic, “Children Of The Revolution”, is the latest preview of a forthcoming album tribute to UK rockers T. Rex.

Due September 4, “AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T. Rex” features new versions of 26 tracks by the pioneering glam rock group from their runs as Tyrannosaurus Rex and T. Rex between 1968-77.

The collection was created by the late Hal Willner, the acclaimed music producer who passed away on April 7 from COVID-19; Willner worked on the project for several years, with sessions spanning continents, from New York, Los Angeles and New Orleans, to London, Paris and Berlin.

“Through a stroke of luck, I met the incredibly talented and kind Hal Willner,” says Kesha. “We were in the same studio and he said he liked my red nudie suit, and then when he mentioned that he was working on a project that involved honoring Marc Bolan, I excitedly started rambling about how much T. Rex has influenced my music and my style. Right there we decided to record our own incarnation of ‘Children of the Revolution,’ a mother****** of a song!

“I’m excited for the world to finally hear it! This project was so exciting and important to the late great Hal, and I’m humbled to be a part of this project honoring one of the most magical artists of the 20th century.”

The tribute record features contributions from U2 with Elton John, Joan Jett, Todd Rundgren, Perry Farrell, David Johansen, Sean Lennon and Victoria Williams, among others.

Bolan released a dozen studio albums with the band before his fall 1977 death from a car accident near his UK home.

T. Rex will be among the artists inducted into the 2020 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in November.

Rush bassist Geddy Lee shares rare 1960s live photo

Rush bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee is sharing a rare, vintage photo of him performing as a teenager in the mid-1960s.

"Once in a while, a photo I've haven’t seen in ages, or ever...pops up on social media, like a ghost from my past,” writes Lee on Instagram. “I find myself slack-jawed, mouth gaping at some of them in wonder...'Is that me?.. where on earth, did this come from?' Well, this is one such photo. I was 14 or 15, playing in a garage band, at what is obviously one of my very first gigs ever... I do recall that we played some songs by Sam and Dave, and The Grassroots! ...and if you look closely, you can barely see a sliver of a white Hagstrom bass in my hands!

“One of my very first instruments...When putting my bass book together I searched high and low, to no avail, for a photo of this bass ... so I'm super pleased to share this moment of my long forgotten past. #digtheshorthair #garagebandsrule #HagstromHIIB #TheGrassroots #SamandDave #LiveforToday #vintagebasses #didImentionthehaircut #sweetmemories"

The rocker published “Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book Of Bass”, in 2018; the project celebrates the history of the instrument alongside Lee's personal collection of vintage electric bass guitars, which dates from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Rush recently released a series of reissues of their seventh album, “Permanent Waves”, to mark the record’s 40th anniversary.

Rick Astley unplugs for Foo Fighters classic Everlong

80s pop star Rick Astley is streaming an acoustic cover from isolation of the Foo Fighters’ 1997 classic, “Everlong.”

"Sometimes you just have to find the song that's gonna lift your spirits and put you in another place, and I've been doing that a lot recently with music,” says Astley. “One of the bands I always go to, believe it or not, is Foo Fighters."

Astley’s video has already racked up 1.5 million views in its first few days online.

“Everlong” was the second single from the Foo’s second album, “The Colour And The Shape”, which sold more than 2 million copies in the US.

Dave Grohl recently delivered an intimate acoustic version of the song while celebrating the work of a New York City nurse on ABC-TV’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Astley has performed his 1987 hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up", as a guest with the Foo Fighters in recent years, including the band’s 2017 Summer Sonic show in Tokyo and at the UK’s Reading Festival in 2019.

Queen honored with Royal Mail stamps

Queen are being honored with a special series of stamps by UK’s Royal Mail in sync with their formation in London 50 years ago.

The 13-stamp collection includes a band portrait and four live images alongside eight of their iconic album covers: 1974’s “Queen II” and “Sheer Heart Attack”, 1975’s “A Night At The Opera”, 1977’s “News Of The World”, “The Game” (1980), 1981’s “Greatest Hits”, “The Works” (1984) and 1991’s “Innuendo.”

Celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2021, Queen becomes only the third music group to have a dedicated stamp issue – following The Beatles in 2007 and Pink Floyd in 2016.

Queen were in their formative stages when they were hired to play their first gig: a charity event at Truro City Hall, in June 1970, while still performing under the name Smile. By the time bassist John Deacon joined the following year, the group had changed their name; the four-piece line-up that would remain together for the next two decades made their first live appearance at Surrey College on July 2, 1971.

"It’s hard to put into words what I feel when looking at these beautiful stamps,” says guitarist Brian May. “Since we four precocious boys started out on our quest 50 years ago, our lives have been devoted to making our impossible dream come true. Sometimes it’s strange to wake up and realize the position in which we are now held – we have become a national institution! And nothing brings this home more than this incredible tribute from Royal Mail.

“It’s particularly poignant to look at this collection of images now - now that we are all in a world dominated by a coronavirus, in which none of this could have happened. I just know that I feel an overwhelming desire to own one of these sets! Somehow it will be a way of persuading myself that it really DID all happen!"

“Wow.......stamps featuring our albums!,” adds drummer Roger Taylor. “What an honor. We must be really part of the furniture now! Thanks, Royal Mail for stamping on us! In gratitude."

The Queen stamp series will go on general sale on July 9 at royalmint.com.
