Metallica rock Metal Militia at Pinkpop Festival

Metallica are sharing video of a performance of their 1983 classic, “Metal Militia”, from a June 17 appearance at the Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf, Netherlands.

The track was originally featured on the group’s debut album, “Kill ‘Em All”, which they began recording a month after the group fired Dave Mustaine and brought in new guitarist Kirk Hammett, who was a founding member of the California thrash band Exodus.

Metallica’s debut record earned gold status in 1989 for US sales of 500,000 copies; it took another two years to reach platinum and went on to triple-platinum in 1999 for sales of 3 million copies in the region.

Metallica are also streaming video footage of the “…And Justice For All” track, “Harvester Of Sorrow”, from the show, which followed Denmark’s Copenhell as the second date of Metallica’s series of headlining gigs at European festivals this summer.

Whitesnake stream Guilty Of Love 2022 remix

Whitesnake are streaming a 2022 remix of their 1984 track, “Guilty Of Love”, from their newly-available remixed and remastered “Greatest Hits” collection.

The tune was originally the lead single to the “Slide It In” album, which is one of three records featured on the set, alongside 1987’s “Whitesnake” and 1989’s “Slip Of The Tongue”, as well as other deep cuts and rarities.

The 2022 project contains updated versions of classic tracks like “Still Of The Night,” “Here I Go Again,” and “Is This Love.”

“Greatest Hits” features a staggered series of release dates: it is now available on digital and streaming services worldwide, with CD and 2LP versions issued in Europe (alongside a CD/Blu-ray combo) and North America, with the CD/Blu-ray edition due July 15 in North America.

Whitesnake’s current farewell tour was interrupted this week as a series of dates were cancelled following news that David Coverdale is on doctor’s rest after being diagnosed with an infection of the sinus and trachea; the series is currently scheduled to resume in Budapest, Hungary on July 4.

Statue of Motorhead leader Lemmy unveiled at Hellfest

A statue of Motorhead legend Lemmy Kilmister was unveiled recently during the 2022 edition of France’s Hellfest.

The new statue – which replaced a previous one erected in Lemmy's honour six years ago on the site in Clisson – was created by French sculptor Caroline Brisset, who constructs steel works "that marry the concrete and the abstract to achieve a dreamlike effect."

An official ceremony by festival organizers on June 23 – which saw a portion of the late rocker’s ashes enshrined within the giant statue – was attended by Lemmy's bandmates Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee.

After the Scorpions closed the show with a guest appearance by Campbell, the pair said a few words, a tribute video to Lemmy played, and the two raised a toast to their friend and bandmate.

Hellfest was one of Lemmy's favorite festivals (Motorhead played the first ever Hellfest and were staples of the festival ever since), and the band have always had a tremendous bond with their French rock’n’roll family. It is therefore fitting that Lemmy will forever be present at the site, with fans able to congregate and pay their respects to him at every Hellfest from here on out.

The Motorhead founder passed away in 2015 at the age of 70 from prostate cancer, cardiac arrhythmia, and congestive heart failure.

"We are beyond sorry to disappoint those of you planning to attend this show. It was our intention to reschedule a show in Switzerland as soon as possible, however in overnight discussions with the local promoters, sadly it became apparent that schedules and venues do not line up for the remainder of this year or next.

Whitesnake cancel shows as David Coverdale diagnosed with multiple illnesses

Whitesnake has cancelled a number of upcoming European dates on their farewell tour after David Coverdale was diagnosed with multiple illnesses.

Coverdale released a statement advising fans on his status as the group will miss scheduled concerts in Milan, Italy (June 28) and Vienna, Austria (June 30).

“Dear Whitesnake fans around the world,” began Coverdale, “We have been rocking our way across the globe on the first part of our Farewell Tour giving all we’ve got to you, the fans. The rigors of the road are the same for all of us and we have been trying to keep everyone healthy and safe. Unfortunately we have been hit recently with a couple of situations that we have been dealing with, the best we can..

“First our beloved band leader Reb Beach went down temporarily and he missed a couple of shows while he mended (and is much better now, by the way). Then the rock of our band, the Legendary Tommy Aldridge went down and we unfortunately were not able to play the Rock Imperium Festival in Cartagena this past Saturday (very regrettable and all apologies to our Spanish fans and friends). Tommy was bad enough at the time to have missed the first show ever in his career - The GOOD news is that he is feeling better and is anxious to get back out there to perform for all of you.”

“Unfortunately I have now been hit hard as well,”
he explains. “I started feeling a bit under the weather two days ago, and was just diagnosed with an infection of the sinus & trachea. The doctor recommends 5 days of no singing and bed rest. Sadly, that means that we are not going to be able to do the upcoming shows in Milan, Vienna and a decision on Zagreb is about to be made. I’m very sorry to all the fans who had planned to come see our Farewell Tour in each of those cities - it’s my intention to get better as soon as possible and be able to pick up with the remaining shows of the European Farewell Tour. You are all in our hearts!!”

Coverdale issued an update on June 28, writing: “As stated earlier, I am still under doctor’s orders of bed rest, and to not sing for 5 days as i recover from this sinus infection. That time frame includes the show in Zagreb this Saturday, July 2nd so we are unfortunately going to have to cancel the Zagreb show as well.

"This is obviously very sad for us, especially our band members that were getting to perform before hometown crowds; Michele Luppi, our Italian Stallion was looking forward to playing in Milan in front of his friends and family, and of course Dino Jelusic, the Pride of Croatia was going to be able to give his all, to his hometown of Zagreb. We regret that this is necessary in our attempt to get healthy and be able to finish the rest of our tour.”

Whitesnake’s farewll tour is currently scheduled to resume in Budapest, Hungary on July 4. See also:

Robert Plant wraps up Digging Deep series with Patty Griffin duet

Robert Plant is wrapping up his Digging Deep podcast series with a look back at a 2020 duet with Patty Griffin.

The pair – who previously worked together with the Band Of Joy – teamed up for a version of the rockabilly classic, “Too Much Alike”, which was featured on Plant’s “Digging Deep: Subterranea” anthology.

Originally recorded by Charlie Feathers, the track was produced by Plant and guitarist Buddy Miller; it joined "Nothing Takes The Place Of You" and "Charlie Patton Highway (Turn It Up - Part 1)" as one of three previously-unheard songs featured on the 2020 package.

The limited edition 2CD set presents 30 songs from the rocker’s extensive solo career – from his 1982 debut, “Pictures At Eleven”, to 2017’s “Carry Fire.”

Plant is currently on tour with Alison Krauss in support of their 2021 album, “Raise The Roof.”

Metallica rock Enter Sandman at Copenhell

Metallica are sharing video of a performance of their 1991 smash, “Enter Sandman”, from a June 15 appearance at the Copenhell festival in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Metallica are also sharing video footage of the “Master Of Puppets” track, “Damage, Inc.”, from the show, which marked the first date of a summer European tour that will see the group headline a number of festivals, including Belgium’s Rock Werchter, Spain’s Mad Cool and Portugal’s NOS Alive, among others.

The 2022 trek follows the band’s appearance at a pair of US festivals last month – Napa Valley Bottlerock and Boston Calling – following the completion of a series of dates in South America.

David Bowie revisits 1972 UK TV performance for Ziggy Stardust 50th anniversary

David Bowie’s team is revisiting footage from a 1972 UK television performance as part of the ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations of his album, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.”

In newly-available upgraded HD video, Bowie – as Ziggy and joined by his band, The Spiders From Mars – can be seen delivering the record’s opening track, “Five Years”, on the classic music series The Old Grey Whistle Test.

“Five Years” was one of three songs – alongside “Queen Bitch” and “Oh! You Pretty Things” from “Hunky Dory” – that the rocker delivered just days before the launch of the first Ziggy Stardust tour.

“Hunky Dory” had been released less than two months earlier and the Ziggy Stardust album opener wouldn't be available to fans for a few months yet.

As Bowie’s team notes: “So, of the songs recorded, ‘Oh! You Pretty Things’ would probably have been the best advert for the tour, in that it was freshest in the public memory, having spent several weeks on the UK singles chart for Peter Noone the previous May and June, when it peaked at No. 14.

“However, in their wisdom, the BBC didn't broadcast ‘Oh! You Pretty Things’ for another ten years, probably considering the song a little too mainstream (due to the Noone connection) for the often chin-strokingly serious TOGWT.

“All three tracks were eventually released officially on the Best Of Bowie DVD (including an alternate take of Oh! You Pretty Things) and they still look and sounds as fresh and exciting today as they ever did.”

“The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust…” was re-released on June 17 as a limited edition half-speed mastered LP and a picture disc, featuring the same master and a replica promotional poster for the album.

Bowie laid to rest the Ziggy Stardust persona in July 1973 at his infamous last show with the Spiders From Mars at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, but Ziggy’s impact reverberates to this day.

The Tragically Hip stream Live At The Roxy 1991 album

The Tragically Hip are streaming “Live at the Roxy Los Angeles, May 3, 1991” in sync with the album's release on June 24.

The legendary Canadian band’s appearance at the iconic Los Angeles venue has been revered amongst fans for years as it featured – among other things – the fan favourite “Killer Whale Tank” version of “New Orleans Is Sinking.” The nine-minute track is characterized by mid-song story from the late frontman Gord Downie about a job cleaning an aquarium and inadvertently causing friction between the two whales held in the tank, fact or fiction, fans listen in wonderment.

Originally recorded for a Westwood One radio show, only 40 minutes of the set was broadcasted on air at the time, making the full recording that much more in demand. Prior to its inclusion on the “Road Apples” 30th Anniversary Deluxe package last year, the 15-song concert had not been publicly available and was a sought-after show for the bootleggers and diehard fans….and now it gets a standalone release.

“I remember the Roxy show like it was yesterday,” recalls bassist Gord Sinclair. “We had spent a year on the road before recording ‘Road Apples’ and got right back in the saddle when we finished. The new tunes worked great live and by the time we got to LA we were firing on all pistons,” adding “a great show is something you just have to experience to understand. The magic stays with you. Listening back 30 years later and I’m transported to that hot, sweaty, and very special night. The band was tight and unstoppable. Great crowd, great venue. Together we took things to another level.”

“The Tragically Hip: “Live at the Roxy Los Angeles, May 3, 1991” is now available in multiple formats, including CD, 2LP, digital and streaming.

The Tragically Hip retired in 2017 following Downie’s passing at the age of 53 after a lengthy battle with terminal brain cancer.

"Forty years doesn't feel like 40 years," says drummer Charlie Benante. "Sometimes I have to remind myself about how long this strange trip has been. I enjoy playing these songs, they're such a huge part of my life, and I know for a lot of our fans, they play a big part in theirs as well."

The 2022 package will be released in North America on Blu-Ray and Digital via Megaforce, while a European Digital edition will arrive the same day via Nuclear Blast with a Blu-Ray release later this year.

“Anthrax XL” will arrive just prior to the launch of the band’s 40th anniversary co-headlining tour of North America with Black Label Society, which will open in Phoenix, AZ on July 26.

ZZ Top share Raw version of Heard It On The X

ZZ Top are sharing video of a performance of their 1975 classic, “Heard It On The X”, from the forthcoming live package, “Raw.”

The song from “Fandango!” was recorded as part of an intimate session at Gruene Hall, “the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas”, as captured for the 2019 Netflix documentary, “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.”

“Heard It On The X” is a faithful chronicle of the famed "border blaster" radio phenomenon from the time when Mexican AM stations held call letters beginning with the letter "X" just south of the US border, broadcasting with virtually unlimited wattage. Stateside stations were maxed out to 50,000 watts of peak power while the Mexican stations were known for their million-watt signals.

The idea to broadcast to stateside listeners from Mexico originated with the legendary "Doctor" J.R. Brinkley, whose goat gland implant procedure was touted as a cure for sexual impotency problems back in the pre-Viagra age. His quackery reached a massive audience of eager listeners while simultaneously sidestepping all avenues of US governmental approval.

“Even though Dusty, Frank, and I grew up in different part of Texas,” says Billy Gibbons, “we listened to the same stations, particularly the "X" stations and, as a result, we gained a lot of the same musical and cultural points of reference."

Due July 22, “Raw” will be available on 180 gram vinyl, CD and through digital platforms.

Ozzy Osbourne streams title track to new album Patient Number 9

Ozzy Osbourne is streaming a video for the title track to his forthcoming album, “Patient Number 9.”

The tune sees the rock icon joined by Jeff Beck, one of several guest guitarists on the project, which – like 2020’s “Ordinary Man” – was produced by Andrew Watt.

"The song is about a mental institution,” explains Osbourne. “Having someone like Jeff Beck play on my album is just incredible, a total honor. There's no other guitar player that plays like him and his solo on 'Patient Number 9' is just jaw-dropping."

Due September 9, the album sees Osbourne working with a core lineup of Watt, Zakk Wylde, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, and guests including Eric Clapton, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses and Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction, and – for the first time ever – Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi appears on an Ozzy solo album.

"It was really great working with Tony,” says Ozzy. “He's the riff master. No one can touch him in that respect. I only wish we had these songs for Black Sabbath’s '13' album."

Osbourne is currently recuperating at his Los Angeles home following major surgery on June 13 to remove and realign pins in his neck and back.
