PRO VIDEO: Geddy Lee performs with Yes at Rock Hall induction

Rush bassist Geddy Lee joined Yes for a performance of their 1971 classic, “Roundabout”, at the band’s induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in New York on April 7, and professional video of the collaboration has surfaced online.

After welcoming Yes to the Cleveland-based institution alongside Rush bandmate Alex Lifeson, Lee stepped in to handle bass duties on the tune in place of the late Chris Squirenews that was leaked by singer Jon Anderson in early March and quickly shot down by both Rush’s management and the Rock Hall in an attempt to keep the appearance a surprise.

"My great, great pleasure to induct and then get to play with one of my all-time favorite bands,” said Lee afterwards. “Long overdue and so well deserved."

Footage of the Rush bassist’s appearance with Yes follows HBO’s broadcast of the event, which saw the progressive rock pioneers honored as part of the Class of 2017 alongside Pearl Jam, Journey, Electric Light Orchestra, Joan Baez and Tupac Shakur.

Yes members Anderson, Squire, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman, Alan White and Tony Kaye were recognized for their enduring career.

Watch fan-filmed video of Yes’ full Rock Hall induction here.

In sync with their induction, Yes announced dates for a summer US tour dubbed Yestival that will feature special guest Todd Rundgren and an opening set from Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy.

The month-long run will open in Greensboro, NC on August 4, with more dates to be announced.

Meanwhile, Yes veterans Anderson, Rabin Wakeman will also launch a North American tour starting August 26 in Stockton, CA.

Officially billed as Yes Featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman, the trio first regrouped for a US trek last year and some select UK and European dates under the banner Anderson Rabin Wakeman (ARW).

Ozzy Osbourne reunites with Zakk Wylde for 2017 tour

Ozzy Osbourne will reunite with guitarist Zakk Wylde for a 2017 tour as the singer relaunches his solo career following an extended reunion and farewell tour with Black Sabbath.

The pair first teamed up thirty years ago, when Osbourne hired the then-unknown 20-year axeman from New Jersey to replace Jake E. Lee in his lineup; Wylde would go on to record five studio and three live albums over the on-again/off-again stint before exiting in 2009.

Now, Wylde returns to help Ozzy restart his solo career with news of the first four festival dates of a summer US tour, including appearances at Rock USA, Chicago Open Air, Buffalo Chip and Moonstock; more dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Black Label Society rocker joins the lineup of longtime Ozzy members that features bassist Blasko, drummer Tommy Clufetos and keyboardist Adam Wakeman.

“I’m so happy to be getting back on the road with Zakk, Blasko, Tommy and Adam,” says Ozzy. “This is what I do. This is where I belong, on the road.”

"I'm really looking forward to the hardcore powahlifting training sessions with Ozzy,” adds Wylde, "as well as playing music in between sets of heavy squats, benching and deadlifts."

Ozzy and Black Sabbath performed the final concert of their farewell tour at the Genting Arena in their hometown of Birmingham, UK on February 4, wrapping up a year-long world trek to wind down a legendary career that spanned five decades.

Osbourne is planning to release a new solo album next year, his first since 2010’s “Scream.”

Judas Priest share new album update

Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford is sharing a status update on the band’s follow-up to 2014’s “Redeemer Of Souls.”

The veteran metal outfit entered the studio in January after prepping a series of demos, and now Halford says the group are deep into the project with producer Tom Allom.

"Well, we're still tracking,” the rocker tells Planet Rock's Paul Anthony at the launch of Hell Bent For Leather, a new exhibition of leather jackets hand-painted by world-renowned tattoo artists. “I won't say we're at the end, but we feel like we're coming to some of the final moments. And it's just great to watch how a record comes together, from those early, early days where there was just me and Glenn [Tipton] and Richie [Faulkner] sitting in the studio with a couple of guitars and just, you know, doing what we do. You start the day with nothing, and then at the end of day, potentially, you've got a really great, classic Priest song that may live forever.

"So we're hard at it,” he adds. “We're still doing what we love to do. Priest is a working band more than anything else. It's that Midlands ethic, the work ethic of anybody that goes to work… I say it's work, 'cause it is work — you're working with your mind, you're being creative.

“And now we're moving through into other stages, we're preparing for another big world tour, getting stage designs sorted, lighting designs sorted. So this is the beginning of what's gonna be a very exciting 2018 period."

In February, Judas Priest issued an expanded 30th anniversary edition of their 1986 album, “Turbo”, and Halford will release a 14-disc box set this spring detailing his work outside of the legendary UK metal pioneers.

Due May 19, “The Complete Collection” will deliver four albums by Fight, the lone record by 2wo, and seven titles from the solo band Halford.

Rolling Stones win Album and Artist Of The Year at UK Jazz FM Awards

photo: RollingStones.com

The Rolling Stones were honored at the U.K. Jazz FM Awards in London on April 25.

The group picked up Album Of The Year for their covers album, “Blue & Lonesome”, while also being named Blues Artists Of The Year by Jazz FM listeners.

Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts were on hand for the event at London’s Shoreditch Town Hall.

“We started off a very long time ago in London trying to play clubs, and those clubs were jazz clubs,” Jagger told the crowd. “We used to try and play these jazz clubs and they used to kick us out for playing blues. So this sort of feels full-circle.”

Recorded over three days in December 2015 at British Grove Studios in West London, the set features updated versions of tunes originally recorded by blues legends Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Magic Sam, among others.

Jagger admitted that he had some initial reservations about putting “Blue & Lonesome” out.

"We were making another record, and we made this [one] sort of in between," he explained. “I said, 'It's a bit of a minority niche thing.' They [Universal Music] were the ones that said, ‘This sounds really great. We want to put it out... Everyone's going to love it.' So I want to thank them for pushing it and helping us and everyone for listening to it."

Watts was also presented with the Jazz FM Gold Award, in recognition of his contribution to jazz and blues from his friend and British musician Evan Parker.

Jagger recently revealed that the Stones were working on a new album of original material, their first since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.”

The Beatles stream unreleased outtake of Sgt. Pepper’s title track

The Beatles are streaming an unreleased outtake of the title track to “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” as a preview to the May 26 release of a series of reissues to celebrate the landmark album’s 50th anniversary.

Billed as “take 9”, The Guardian describes this version as “pretty stripped back, and it features some trippy voices echoing around towards the end (“I feel it, I feel it, oh baby now I feel it … Gotta be free now”). Then there’s a brief conversation between John and Paul about singing technique, and some bits where Paul has run out of breath.”

The Beatles’ eighth album, “Sgt. Pepper’s” remains one of the best-selling albums in history, with more than 32 million copies sold worldwide.

The revamped and expanded project will be available as CD, 2CD, 2LP, 6-disc Super Deluxe Edition and digital packages, all featuring a new stereo mix by Giles Martin and Sam Okell following the original work by the legendary George Martin.

Full track lists for each version can be viewed here.

“It’s crazy to think that 50 years later,” says Paul McCartney, “we are looking back on this project with such fondness and a little bit of amazement at how four guys, a great producer and his engineers could make such a lasting piece of art.”

VIDEO: John Mellencamp performs on Late Night with Seth Meyers

photo: NBC

John Mellencamp performed a pair of tunes for NBC-TV’s Late Night With Seth Meyers on April 26, and official video from the show is available online.

The Indiana rocker was joined by Martina McBride for “Grandview”, the lead single from his album, “Sad Clowns & Hillbillies”, which hits stores on April 28.

Mellencamp also delivered an exclusive online solo acoustic performance of his 1982 smash, “Jack And Diane.”

The singer joined Myers to discuss his 23rd record as well as his second career as a painter, thanks in part to Bob Dylan.

“He was in my studio,” Mellencamp explained, “and I have hundreds of paintings around, and he said ‘What are you going to do with them?’ I said ‘I don’t know.’ He said, “Why don’t you sell them?’ and I said ‘To who? Who would want these things?’ And he said ‘Well, I sell mine.’ And I said, ‘Oh, OK.’”

“It never dawned on me to try and sell,” he continued. “It was my hobby, ya know. It turned into a hobby; I do it all the time.”

The rocker also revealed how he originally came to NYC to join the Art Students League when a record contract fell in his lap.

“Sad Clowns & Hillbillies” features a collaboration with Carlene Carter, who will join Mellencamp on his upcoming North American tour.

Set to begin June 5 in Denver, CO, the bill will also include Emmylou Harris and folk-pop sister duo Lily & Madeleine, who provide background vocals on the project.

Cheap Trick announce new album and stream lead single Long Time Coming

Cheap Trick are streaming “Long Time Coming” as the lead single from their newly-announced forthcoming album, “We’re All Alright!”

"It's our interpretation of Slade and MC5 and AC/DC and Aerosmith,” guitarist Rick Neilsen tells Billboard about the single and its homage to the group’s influences. “A lot of riffs that are reminiscent of the Move, but they're not steals. It's just, like, all the bands we like."

Due June 16, Cheap Trick teamed with Julian Raymond on the 10-track project, which mixes new material with older, previously unrecorded songs such as "Radio Lover," "Lolita" and "She's Alright"

A 13-song Deluxe Edition adds three tunes, including a cover of The Move’s 1968 single, “Blackberry Way.”

The band are also offering packages and goodies with “We’re All Alright!” as part of a Pledgemusic campaign.

The album title is a lyric from their classic 1978 single, “Surrender”, and follows 2016’s “Bang Zoom Crazy…Hello” as the second release in consecutive years – something the Rockford, IL band hasn’t done in thirty years.

Nielsen hints another new album in 2018 is a distinct possibility.

"Starting in May we're going back in the studio," he says. "There's stuff around and there's some ideas that never did get fleshed out, which we hope to. It's exciting."

VIDEO: Dave Grohl’s Mom discusses loss of Kurt Cobain on The Late Show

Dave Grohl and his mother Virginia appeared as guests on CBS-TV’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on April 26, and video from the program is available online.

The pair were on hand to promote Virginia’s new book, “From Cradle to Stage: Stories From The Mothers Who Rocked And Raised Rock Stars.”

“I didn’t know he was going to be a rockstar. I knew he was going to be a musician,” Virginia told Colbert. “I knew really earlier he was going to be an entertainer. I have a feeling that some of you [entertainers] have it in your blood somewhere that you just start out being goofy, silly and making people laugh.”

Along with reviewing teacher’s comment on Dave’s sixth grade report card, the Grohls also spoke about how the loss of his bandmate Kurt Cobain affected them as a family.

“I think it did [change our relationship],” explained Virginia. “It was such a dark, sad time, and David came home after that, so we all sort of had to regroup. We talked a lot – we’ve always been able to say anything to each other – but that was a particularly incredible time. It’s hard to express.”

“Any time I felt overwhelmed with everything,” added Dave, “I would just go back home, hang out with my mom and see my friends.”

The Foo Fighters leader wrote the foreward for “From Cradle To Stage”, which also sees Virginia discussing music career choices with other parents, including the mothers of Rush’s Geddy Lee, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, and Mike D of The Beastie Boys, among others.

The Foos will play The Bottle Rock Festival in Napa Valley, CA over the May 26-28 Memorial Day weekend before heading overseas for an extensive series of summer festival dates across Europe.

VIDEO: Iron Maiden launch 2017 Book Of Souls tour in Belgium

Iron Maiden launched their 2017 tour in support of 2015’s “The Book Of Souls” in Antwerp, Belgium on April 22, and fan-filmed video from the event has surfaced online.

The band’s 15-song set at the city’s Sportpaleis opened with “If Eternity Should Fail” and included the live debut of “The Great Unknown”; both tracks are featured on the 2015 double album.

The show delivered several Maiden classics and tracks from nine of the group’s records, and saw the first performance of 1981’s “Wrathchild” since 2014.

The Antwerp show will be followed by five concerts in Germany over the next week before Iron Maiden play their first major UK arena tour in six years; the 13-date run will wrap up at the end of May, after which the band will begin a North American tour in Bristow, VA on June 3.

In sync with the 2017 trek, Iron Maiden will complete their vinyl reissues series with twelve albums from the group’s catalogue scheduled for re-release on heavyweight 180g black vinyl this spring.

The 2017 editions wrap up on July 21 with “Death On The Road” (Live), “Flight 666” (Live), “The Final Frontier” and “En Vivo!” (Live).

Gregg Allman denies hospice rumors

Gregg Allman has denied rumors that surfaced Monday suggesting he had entered hospice care.

“Hey everyone,” said Gregg in a statement released on Facebook. "I just wanted y’all to know that I’m currently home in Savannah resting on my doctor’s orders. I want to thank you for all the love that you are sending. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Keep Rockin’"

News reports based on an unverified Facebook post surfaced early Monday indicating The Allman Brothers Band legend had been moved into a hospice.

The 69-year-old Allman cancelled his live schedule for 2017 without explanation last month, including performances in Macon, GA., Atlanta, GA. Chattanooga, TN, Robinsonville, MS, and a 10-show residency at City Winery in New York City in July that was rescheduled from last fall due to a vocal injury.

Last summer, the rocker cancelled 28 tour dates and checked into the Mayo Clinic to address some “serious health issues.”

“I’m so grateful for the people that I work with and for the fans that come to my shows and I want to be at my best for all of them,” Allman explained last fall. “That means I’m going to have to wait until I’m feeling really good, not just good enough like I have been. Good enough isn’t working for us all.”

In 2007, Allman contracted Hepatitis C, underwent a life-saving liver transplant in 2010, cancelled live performances in 2011 due to an upper respiratory condition that resulted in lung surgery, and entered rehab in 2012.

Dave Grohl and his Mom to guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Dave Grohl and his mother Virginia will appear as guests on CBS-TV’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on April 26.

The pair are making the rounds promoting Virginia’s new book, “From Cradle To Stage: Stories From the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars.”

The project sees Mom Grohl sharing her thoughts on her son’s rise to fame – from the early days to Nirvana to the Foo Fighters – while also discussing the subject of inspired music career choices with other parents, including the mothers of R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, and Mike D of The Beastie Boys, among others.

“From Cradle To Stage” features a foreword by Dave and includes exclusive family photographs to create a very intimate portrait of what makes a rock star.

Following a planned hiatus after the completion of extensive touring in support of 2014’s “Sonic Highways”, the Foo Fighters are set to return to live action next month when they will perform at The Bottle Rock Festival in Napa Valley, CA over the May 26-28 Memorial Day weekend, alongside fellow headliners Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers and Maroon 5, and more than 80 other acts at the annual event.

The group will then appear at the Secret Solstice Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland on June 16 before a series of festival dates across Europe this summer.

VIDEO: Chris Cornell performs on CBS This Morning

Chris Cornell performed three tunes, including his new single “The Promise”, on CBS This Morning on April 22 and official video from the program is available.

The Soundgarden singer sat down with anchor Anthony Mason to discuss his work on film soundtracks and the title song to the new feature film of the same name starring Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac and Charlotte Le Bon, set in a love triangle drama set against the 1914 Armenian genocide.

“It’s unique to the film pretty much every time,” explains Cornell of his solo efforts on soundtracks through the years, including the 2006 James Bond epic Casino Royale, 2011’s Machine Gun Preacher, 2013’s 12 Years A Slave, and last year’s 13 Hours.

Following the interview, Cornell performed stripped-down, acoustic versions of "The Promise", the 1994 Soundgarden classic "Black Hole Sun", and the title track to his 2015 album "Higher Truth."

The CBS appearance followed an April 19 full solo band performance of “The Promnise” on The Tonight Show in sync with the film’s debut in theaters this past weekend.

Cornell will join Soundgarden for a spring tour of North America that begins this week as the Seattle rockers take a break from working on the follow-up album to 2012’s “King Animal.”

Roger Waters is streaming “Smell The Roses” as the lead single from his forthcoming album, “Is This The Life We Really Want?”

The song is one of a dozen original tunes featured on the bassist’s first new album in 25 years, which is being billed as “an unflinching commentary on the modern world and uncertain times” and “a natural successor to classic Pink Floyd albums such as ‘Animals’ and ‘The Wall.’

Poison drummer raising funds for new cancer therapy

Poison drummer Rikki Rockett is raising awareness and funds to support immunotherapy at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health after successfully completing a clinical trial that declared him cancer-free last summer.

Following a 2015 diagnosis that confirmed the presence of oral cancer, the rocker initially received standard radiation and chemotherapy treatment before checking in to Moore’s for the experimental procedure.

“I was more scared than I have ever been,” explained Rockett, “but nine weeks later when I got my first PET/CT/MRI, the cancer had shrunk over 90%!!! A mere nine weeks later, I was 100% cancer free on July 13th, one day before my son Jude's seventh birthday.”

Rockett joined the reunited Poison lineup for a 30th anniversary tour that recently began and will see them play their own headline dates while on the road with Def Leppard and Tesla.

The drummer is now asking concert-goers to join him in supporting immunotherapy at Moores Cancer Center. At US stops on the band’s 2017 tour now through June, attendees will hear his story, watch a video about Moores and be given the opportunity to donate $10 by texting "RIKKI" to 50555. (Anyone else at home can also participate at any time.)

"Without the doctors and staff at Moores Cancer Center, I can honestly say I don't think I'd be here today, to say nothing about playing drums and going on tour again," says Rockett. "I am incredibly grateful that I've got my life back and I'll get to see my two children grow up."

These "text2give" donations will directly support cancer immunotherapy at Moores Cancer Center, including research, clinical trials and patient care. Rather than directly targeting tumors as in traditional cancer therapies, immunotherapy boosts the body's immune system, better enabling it to attack cancer cells itself. This type of treatment is only available at a few specific medical centers around the country.

"We can't thank Rikki and all his fans enough for supporting our work," said Ezra Cohen, MD, co-head of the Solid Tumor Therapeutics Research Program, associate director of Translational Sciences and one of Rockett's oncologists at Moores Cancer Center. "We are delighted that Rikki responded so well to immunotherapy. He had already been through a lot with chemotherapy and radiation treatment before he came to us, but his cancer recurred. While this approach is still in the early stages and isn't right for everyone, with Rikki's support we hope to make immunotherapy available to more patients before they have to go through everything he did."

Text2give charges will appear on your wireless bill, or be deducted from your prepaid balance. All purchases must be authorized by account holder. You must be 18 years of age or have parental permission to participate. Message and data rates may apply.

This weekend, the Def Leppard tour will play the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN on April 21, the Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, SD on April 22 and the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA on April 24.

Led Zeppelin classic returns to US charts

photo: Ron Rafaelli

Led Zeppelin’s 1970 classic, “Immigrant Song”, has entered the US charts after appearing in the trailer for the upcoming third movie in Marvel Studios' Thor franchise, "Thor: Ragnarok."

Billboard reports the only single released from “Led Zeppelin III” debuts on the Hot Rock Songs chart at No. 16 with 7,000 downloads sold in the week ending April 13, according to Nielsen Music, while also re-entering the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart at No. 1.

“Immigrant Song” originally peaked at No. 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1970 while the album went on to US sales of more than 6 million copies.

In theaters on November 3 and directed by Taika Waititi, "Thor: Ragnarok" sees Thor held captive on the planet Sakaar without his hammer while he must win a gladiatorial duel against old friend the Hulk in order to return to Asgard in time to stop Hela and the impending Ragnarök from ending civilization there.

The project stars Chris Hemsworth in the title role alongside an all-star cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins, among others, with music by Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo.

Former Van Halen bassist mourns death of infant grandson

Former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony is mourning the death of his infant grandson, Rex, at just two weeks of age.

Rex Becerra was born to Anthony’s daughter Elisha and husband Billy Becerra on March 20, and, as the rocker explains, he “was quickly diagnosed with Heart Disease within 9 hours of birth and was transported to two hospitals and ultimately landed at Children's Hospital LA where he underwent open heart surgery. The surgery was successful, however, Rex's heart was too weak to overcome the recovery.”

After the family removed him from life support, Rex passed away on April 4.

“We are tremendously proud of Rex,” says Anthony. “In the short time on earth he left a lasting impression that our family will cherish.”

The bassist is sharing news of his family’s loss and their efforts to raise funds for the hospital in Rex’s name.

“I am doing the ‘Walk L.A.’ in June for Children’s Hospital L.A. with our families to give back a little to the hospital that did so much for my grandson and other children that come here,” Anthony explains.

The rocker is encouraging others to participate in the June 17 event while he and his family are hoping to raise $10,000 in donations to benefit the hospital.

A member of Chickenfoot and The Circle, Anthony recently revealed that he is open to the idea of reuniting with the classic Van Halen lineup for a possible 40th anniversary tour in 2018.

The bassist joined Van Halen in 1974 and appeared on the group’s albums and tours through 2004, when he was removed from the lineup by guitarist Eddie Van Halen because he remained friendly with Sammy Hagar after the singer’s stint in the band.

The guitarist’s son, Wolfgang, has been handling bass duties in Van Halen ever since.

VIDEO: Chris Cornell performs on The Tonight Show

Chris Cornell performed his new single, “The Promise”, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday and official video from the program is available.

The singer was joined by a group of backing musicians that included bandmate and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron, who was recently inducted into the 2017 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of Pearl Jam.

The tune is the title track to the forthcoming feature film of the same name directed by Terry George and starring Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac and Charlotte Le Bon in a love triangle drama set against the 1914 Armenian genocide.

“As humans, we have a tremendous capacity to trudge ahead in our lives and not look at the difficult and challenging moments… but I think it’s important,” explains Cornell. “Educating ourselves on the past is the best way to understand the present and avoid future atrocities by understanding and intervening. We must educate and stand as one to combat this fear and violence, and as citizens of the world, work to protect each other’s human rights.”

Cornell will donate his proceeds from the song to the International Rescue Committee, whose role is to respond to the world’s worst humanitarian crises by helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster.

"The Promise" premiered last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival and opens in theaters April 21.

Soundgarden will launch a spring tour of North America with a series of three festival appearances in Florida next week before beginning their headlining run with The Pretty Reckless and The Dillinger Escape Plan at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA on May 3.

Roger Waters details new album release

Roger Waters is sharing more details about his forthcoming album, “Is This The Life We Really Want?”

Originally set for a May 19 release date, the bassist’s first original record in 25 years will now be issued on June 2, one week after the May 26 launch of a North American tour in Kansas City, MO.

Waters has also unveiled the track list for the 12-song project, which he recorded with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich in London and Los Angeles.

Working with the pair on the follow-up to 1992’s “Amused To Death” are Gus Seyffert (bass, guitar, keyboards), Jonathan Wilson (guitar, keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Roger Manning (keyboards), Lee Pardini (keyboards), and Lucius (vocals) with Jessica Wolfe and Holly Proctor.

The physical album release includes a double 180-gram vinyl LP in a gatefold jacket and a 4-panel soft pack CD.

All album formats, physical and digital, are available for pre-order starting April 21.

Waters will perform more than 50 shows on the 2017 Us + Them North American tour

"We are going to take a new show on the road, the content is very secret," he says. "It'll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75% of it will be old material and 25% will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It'll be spectacular like all my shows have been.”
