Royal Blood stream video for Typhoons track Oblivion

Royal Blood are streaming a video for “Oblivion”, a track from their latest album, “Typhoons.”

Created by and starring American musician and filmmaker Liam Lynch – who previously delivered a video for the song “Boilermaker” – the clip follows a recently-issued live performance of the song.

The third studio set by bassist/singer Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher earned Royal Blood their third straight UK No. 1 album, following similar success with their 2014 self-titled debut and 2017’s “How Did We Get So Dark?”

The duo produced most of the project themselves, with some additional work handled by Paul Epworth and Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.

Scott Weiland biopic in the works

A biopic based on the memoir of former Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland is in the works.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Paper Heart” will tell the story of the late rocker, who died in December 2015 at age 48 from an accidental overdose while on tour.

Dark Pictures and Orian Williams have acquired the book rights to Weiland’s 2011 memoir, “Not Dead & Not For Sale.”

Jennifer Erwin, a die-hard Stone Temple Pilots fan who co-founded Dark Pictures with Anne Beagan, will write the script for the film adaptation of Weiland’s life that is set to meld rock stardom with a moving love story, the rock band frontman plunged into addiction and then fighting his way back to the top with comebacks.

“It’s an honor to have the trust to tell Scott’s story and the ability to portray the lesser known sides of him — the loving and tender man he was, the high school athlete he was, the melancholy soul he was and the legendary frontman that he will always be,” Erwin said in a statement.

“Scott was glamorous, complicated and wounded. His childhood had a big effect on his struggles with addiction,” Beagan added in her own statement.

The titles of both Weiland’s memoir and the planned biopics’s title are taken from lyrics in the 1996 Stone Temple Pilots song “Tripppin’ On A Hole In A Paper Heart”, as featured on the group’s third album, “Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop.”

Nirvana classic Smells Like Teen Spirit passes 1 billion Spotify streams

Nirvana’s 1991 classic, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, has passed one billion streams on Spotify, according to music industry site Chart Data.

The lead single from the Seattle band’s second album, “Nevermind”, would reach No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 while the record became the group’s first US chart-topper when it knocked Michael Jackson’s ”Dangerous” out of the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 after that project sold four million copies in its first month following release.

“Nevermind” would sell 30 million copies worldwide, including earning diamond status for US sales of more than 10 million.

The video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” made headlines in December of 2019 when it passed 1 billion views on YouTube.

With sales of more than 75 million albums worldwide, Nirvana were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2014.

Anthrax face lineup change and grunge era on Anthrax 40 series

Anthrax face a lineup change and the impact of the grunge era in the latest installment of the band’s 40th anniversary video series.

Following the touring cycle for their 1993 effort, “Sound Of White Noise”, Anthrax regrouped in upstate New York to work on their next project and, as the sessions developed over a series of months, lead guitarist Dan Spitz was nowhere to be seen.

Scott Ian recalls Spitz had been showing signs of losing interest in music for some time as he dealt with developments in his personal life, including the start of a family; the rocker eventually confirmed his exit and went on to earn degrees in luxury mechanical watchmaking and micro-mechanical engineering while becoming a renowned watchmaker instructor for a Swiss company.

Drummer Charlie Benate handled lead guitar duties for most of their 1995 album, “Stomp 442”, which also featured work by Mike Tempesta, Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, and soon-to-be new lineup addition Paul Crook.

In the meantime, metal bands faced the challenge of dealing with a music industry focused on grunge after it took over the mainstream following Nirvana’s commercial breakthrough and the groundswell of a new era in rock.

“It was a weird time for us, to be honest with you,” explains Benante. “’Heavy Metal’ was a bad name at that time, you know; that’s the time when ‘the gatekeepers’ were like ‘you can’t come in here because you play that type of stuff’, and it was all about ‘alternative’ music.”

“I personally didn’t understand that grunge was the death knell for heavy metal,”
adds Ian, “…like in one fell swoop that in the 90s, most metal was gonna be done for a while and be put into a forced hibernation, if only it were that easy; a forced hibernation would have been better than what we went through.”

Anthrax will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a very special livestream performance on Friday, July 16 that will see the band deliver a deep cuts set that will pull from their entire career-spanning catalog.

Royal Blood share orchestral version of All We Have Is Now

Royal Blood are sharing video of an orchestral version of their “Typhoons” track, “All We Have Is Now.”

Bassist/singer Mike Kerr is joined by a 16-piece string orchestra at London’s Abbey Road Studios to record the track for Amazon Music.

Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher have just issued a double AA sided 7” vinyl release of the song alongside a previously-shared recording of the 2021 single, “Limbo”, from the same session.

“Typhoons” earned Royal Blood their third straight UK No. 1, following similar success with their 2014 self-titled debut and 2017’s “How Did We Get So Dark?”

The band are currently scheduled to return to the stage next month for appearances at three UK festivals this summer.

Queen continue look at Queenmania in Japan on The Greatest

Queen continue a look at their long time support from fans in Japan in the second of a two-part episode in the group’s weekly video series, The Greatest.

Despite their absence on the touring circuit prior to, and following, the 1991 passing of Freddie Mercury, Queen’s music continued to be treasured in Japan throughout the ’90s and into the 21st Century, thanks largely to their inclusion in TV commercials and television dramas, particularly one of Japan’s biggest drama series which prompted the release of a special 2004 ‘hits’ compilation album, exclusive to Japan – “Queen Jewels.” The album went on to sell over a million copies while their song, “I Was Born To Love You”, reached No. 1 on the singles charts after it was featured in a Japanese beer commercial.

A second edition, “Queen Jewels II”, followed in 2005.

It would not be until 2005 the band would return, first with Paul Rodgers and then again in 2014 with Adam Lambert when they headlined the annual Summer Sonic festival.

“Summer Sonic is like Glastonbury or one of the biggest summer music festival outdoor shows, and we played Osaka and Tokyo,” recalls record company executive and promoter Kaz Utsunomiya. “I’ve seen many, many Summer Sonic festivals but I think I can say that everyone who I talk to, including fans and record company people, that was probably the biggest ending act of any Summer Sonic for twenty years or something.”

Japan is now once again a regular feature on the Queen touring schedule, the band having returned as recently as 2020 to perform four massive sold-out arena shows playing to a combined audience of over 132,000 people across the country.

“Even if the Japanese fan loved them, if the band didn’t actually return that kind of love, they wouldn’t have got this big,” adds Utsunomiya. “And I think it’s a mutual respect of the culture, mutual respect of the people, that’s bonded by the greatest songs.”

KISS preview A&E Biography special KISStory

KISS are sharing a video preview of their new A&E documentary, “Biography: KISStory”, ahead of its broadcast premiere this weekend.

Directed by D.J. Viola and billed as “the definitive documentary”, the special will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the band’s rise to fame as seen through original recording sessions, home movies, behind-the-scenes stories and rare footage.

In a video preview, band mambers revisit an early conversation with their first manager that led to some of the group’s key stage visuals and marketing plans.

“Bill Aucoin says ‘You guys are doing a song called ‘Firehouse’,” recalls Gene Simmons, “One of you guys has to spit fire.”

“’Who wants to try?’”
Paul Stanley remembers the manager asking the group, with Simmons stepping into the role for live performances.

“Literally the very first show we did, my hair went up like a matchstick,”
explains Simmons. “And the fans loved it!”

Stanley credits Aucoin with the idea of the band members creating characters through the use of makeup, while remaining anonymous off stage: “Bill was also the guy who came up with the ide ‘you guys are never going to be seen without makeup’”.

Simmons continues: “He said to us, ‘Marilyn Monroe, she never took a photo where she looked frumpy without her make-up. Whenever you saw her she was Marilyn Monroe 24 hours a day. That’s what you guys should be doing.’ So we did.”

A&E will premiere "Biography: KISStory" with a two-night event on June 27 and June 28 from 9 p.m. ET to 11 p.m. ET.

Lenny Kravitz releases Raise Vibration video

Lenny Kravitz has released a video for the title track to his 2018 album, “Raise Vibration.”

Directed by famed photographer Mark Seliger, the clip was filmed in the Bahamas, where the rocker has been living during the pandemic.

"This song is very special to me,” says Kravitz. “It's all about hope, banding together, and remaining fearless in the pursuit of your passion and purpose. Mark and I hold this message close to heart. We wanted to celebrate the beauty of the Bahamas in the video and try to capture the spirit of inspiration synonymous with the islands. It's something I want to share once I get back on the road."

The singer produced and recorded “Raise Vibration” at his Bahamas studio; the record went Top 5 in several countries while debuting and peaking at No. 43 on the US Billboard 200.

Kravitz issued his memoir, “Let Love Rule”, last fall; co-written by biographer and songwriter David Ritz, the books covers the story of the his early years, culminating in the 1989 release of his debut album of the same name.

Pink Floyd stream 1972 performance of A Saucerful Of Secrets

Pink Floyd are streaming video of a 1972 performance of their 1968 classic, “A Saucerful Of Secrets.”

The band were filmed in concert at The Amsterdam Rock Circus in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on May 22, 1972 while on tour road-testing new material from a project that would eventually reveal itself the following year as “The Dark Side Of The Moon.”

“A Saucerful Of Secrets” reached No. 9 on the UK charts to deliver the group their second straight Top 10 record, which was recorded during Pink Floyd’s transition from the Syd Barrett-era to the David Gilmour lineup and has the distinction of featuring the only song in their catalog to feature all five band members: “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun.”

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason launched his live project, Saucerful Of Secrets, in 2018; the band exclusively performs vintage pre-Dark Side Of The Moon-era material by the legendary UK group.

Last fall, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets released “Live At The Roundhouse”, which captures the band in concert at the legendary London venue during their first tour.

Roger Daltrey cancels US solo tour

Roger Daltrey has cancelled his scheduled series of solo US concerts this fall.

The Who legend was set to perform dates in August and September on the Live And Kicking Tour.

“When I booked these shows several months ago,” explains Daltrey, “I was confident that things would be back to normal by August, but due to the uncertainty of the current travel situation and the challenges for a UK act to be able to perform in the USA I have reluctantly decided to cancel the shows. I hope to re-book them in the near future, and to those of you who have bought tickets, please accept my sincere apologies.

“I do appreciate your support and can't wait to get back to work once the time is right.”

Daltrey revealed the origins of his legendary microphone swinging technique during an appearance on NBC-TV’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in April.

"I did it out of pure boredom, actually," shared the rocker. "I was on a stage with two maniacs and a very straight bass player and I just got bored. I thought, 'I've got this thing in my hand and I'm fed up with holding it up there [next to my face] so what do I do with it?' So I kind of threw it and I held onto the cord and of course it came back. I thought, 'Well that's kind of interesting. Let's see what more I can do.'

"I went on to be pretty good with that thing. I could take a cigarette out of someone's mouth from about 20 yards, which is quite good, you know. I was really quite a good shot with that thing but I can't see now of course…I throw it out and now I just pray that it comes down somewhere [near me]."

Journey release new single The Way We Used To Be

Journey have a released their new single, “The Way We Used To Be.”

The band are streaming a video for the tune, which marks their first new music since the 2011 album, “Eclipse.”

“The first song ‘The Way We Used To Be’ came out of 1 of the many loops I’d written while the long downtime continued with the pandemic we all had to deal with,” explains Neal Schon. “So utilizing my time and trying to keep fans in touch I started posting many jams and loops I created very quickly most every day. On ‘The Way We Used To Be’ I laid down the keyboard loop with over-dubbed rhythm and a little blues lead guitar and sent to Jonathan. He sent it back very shortly after with demo vocals and lyrics and I said to myself with a smile - we’ve still got it!

“I felt Jonathan nailed the lyrics and melody with haunting chorus ‘got to get back’ – ‘to the way we used to be.’ So this was the complete new beginning chapter for Journey - many more follow the same sequence with all of us collectively writing and working together. We now have over 26 songs that we’ve written and whittling it down to 10 or 12. We are very excited by all the new musical endeavors we’ve created together looking forward to getting back on the road to you.”

Journey will debut their new lineup additions – bassist Randy Jackson, drummer Narada Michael Walden and keyboardist Jason Derlatka – during a July 29 show at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL, just two days before they play Lollapalooza in the city; they are also scheduled to appear at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, NV on September 18.

Queensryche announce expanded reissues of Operation Mindcrime and Empire

Queensryche will release expanded reissues of a pair of their classic albums, “Operation: Mindcrime” and “Empire”, on June 25.

The band’s third studio record, 1988’s “Operation: Mindcrime” was a concept album that told the story of a political thriller based around the set’s main character, Nikki; the set reached No. 50 on the US Billboard 200 while selling a million copies in the country.

Neil Young recording new album with Crazy Horse

Neil Young has revealed that he is currently working on a new album with Crazy Horse.

“Crazy Horse recording is under way,” shared the rocker on his Neil Young Archives site. “The Horse is back in the barn now, shaking off the rust.”

“It’s been a long time since we have been together, and more than a few tears have been shed,” he continued. “We are so happy to be back in the barn, a barn built to replace the 1850s barn that had collapsed in exactly the same place, high in the mountains of Colorado! It’s an exact replica of the original, built with Ponderosa pines by Ted Moews and his great crew of artisans. It is magic inside.

“Mark Humphries is doing our monitors, continuing a near fifty year tradition. Mark notes that this is our ‘new barn’ to replace Plywood Analog on Broken Arrow Ranch, where we did ‘Ragged Glory’, ‘Freedom’, and other albums.

“These are new times, with new songs and feelings after what our world has been through and continues to face,” he added. “The music we are making [is] for our souls. It’s like fresh water on a desert. Life is going on.”

Joining Young in the band’s current lineup is original bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina alongside returning member and multi-instrumentalist Nils Lofgren in place of retired guitarist Frank Sampedro.

The new project will mark the follow-up to the group’s 2019 album, “Colorado.” See also:

Wolfgang Van Halen debuts Mammoth WVH atop multiple US Rock charts

Wolfgang Van Halen has debuted his Mammoth WVH album atop multiple US Rock charts.

Recorded with producer Michael Baskette at the famed 5150 studios, the record opens at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums, Hard Rock Albums and Independent Albums charts, at No. 2 on the Top Album Sales and Current Album Sales lists, and at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 following its release on June 11.

“I’m blown away and eternally grateful for the support you’ve all given me,” shared the rocker on social media. “This is absolutely crazy. Thank you (Like seriously… a DEBUT ROCK album getting a top 15 placement on the Billboard Top 200 in 2021?! Absolutely insane. You are all incredible.)”

Introduced last fall with the lead single “The Distance” – a tribute to his late father Eddie Van HalenMammoth WVH sees Wolfgang writing the songs and performing all of the instrumentation and vocals for the project while carrying on the family’s history with his new music.

“The name Mammoth is really special to me,” explains Wolfgang. “Not only was it the name of Van Halen before it became Van Halen, but my father was also the lead singer. Ever since my dad told me this, I always thought that when I grew up, I’d call my own band Mammoth, because I loved the name so much. I’m so thankful that my father was able to listen to, and enjoy the music I made. Nothing made me happier than seeing how proud he was that I was continuing the family legacy.”

Following a series of US television performances in advance of the album’s release, Mammoth WVH will launch their first live dates this summer when they join Guns N’ Roses for a tour of US stadiums.
