Queen spotlight Roger Taylor hits in latest episode of The Greatest

Queen are putting the spotlight on hits written by Roger Taylor in latest episode of The Greatest.

As well as writing, among others, fan favourites such as “I’m In Love With My Car”, famously the B-Side to “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and the live tour de force “Sheer Heart Attack”, Queen’s first major chart success with a Taylor composition came in 1984 with “Radio Ga Ga” - the single was a worldwide success for the band, reaching number one in 19 countries.

The iconic video moment of the crowd clapping along to the drumbeat was quickly adopted by fans attending live Queen shows around the world and continues to be an awe-inspiring audience participation moment during every live performance.

More chart success for Taylor followed on the band’s next album with the title track, “A Kind Of Magic”, accompanied by another classic video in which Freddie Mercury gets to weave his ‘magic’ over his less than glamorous looking bandmates.

By the time "The Miracle" album came along in 1989, songs were being credited as being composed by Queen, rather than individually – but it is acknowledged that Roger was the originator of two of the album’s chart hits – “Invisible Man” and “Breakthru.”

"These Are The Days Of Our Lives" is a song that was originally conceived by Roger as a reflective song about parenthood, but it took on a different significance on its release, coming shortly after the tragic loss of Mercury in 1991.

Former Judas Priest drummer John Hinch dead at 73

Former Judas Priest drummer John Hinch died April 29 at the age of 73.

Rob Halford confirmed the news via his Instagram Stories account, where he shared a photo of Hinch along with the caption "RIP" and a series of emojis, including the "devil's horns" and a snare drum.

Hinch and Halford had been bandmates in Hiroshima before the pair joined Judas Priest in 1973 and appeared on the group’s 1974 album debut, “Rocka Rolla.”

The drummer exited the band in 1975 and was replaced by former Judas Priest member Alan Moore prior to the recording of their second album, “Sad Wings Of Destiny.”

Hinch reportedly went on to a career in artist management.

Few details are known about Hinch’s death, with Louder reporting that the rocker passed “after being taken ill the previous day.”

“I am extremely saddened to hear that John has passed away as he played his part so well in the creation and the history of Judas Priest,” shared former guitarist K.K. Downing on social media. “There are so many memories of crazy and fun times we all shared together, John was always so dependable and did everything to the best of his ability, including his drumming, which looking back can only be described as faultless.

“The fact that he continued to play to his very last day is testimony to his ability and dedication to his love of the drums, I wish to give my sincere condolences to John’s family and loved ones from myself and all of you forever. Rest in peace John.”

Black Sabbath stream Symptom Of The Universe from Sabotage reissue

Black Sabbath are streaming audio of their newly-remastered classic track, “Symptom Of The Universe”, as the latest preview to the June 11 release of an expanded reissue of their 1975 album, “Sabotage.”

Co-produced by guitarist Tony Iommi and Mike Butcher, the band’s sixth studio set – which includes classics like “Hole In The Sky” and “Symptom Of The Universe” – was a Top 10 record in their native UK and other parts of Europe while peaking at No. 28 on the US Billboard 200.

When Black Sabbath began recording the project in early 1975, they were embroiled in a protracted legal battle with a former manager and feeling sabotaged at every turn – which inspired the album’s title.

The 4CD and 4LP Super Deluxe Editions present a remastered version of the original album alongside a complete live show recorded during the band’s 1975 tour – including 13 previously-unreleased tracks, a bonus 7-inch with the single edit for “Am I Going Insane (Radio)" and “Hole In The Sky” on the flipside (with artwork replicating the very rare Japanese release of the single), a 1975 Madison Square Garden replica concert book and Sabotage 1975 Tour color poster.

Motorhead preview expanded 40th anniversary reissue of No Sleep Til Hammersmith

Motorhead are streaming a previously-unreleased live version of “The Hammer” as a preview to the June 25 release of a series of expended 40th anniversary reissues of their classic 1981 live album, “No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith.”

The project delivered Motorhead their first and only UK No. 1 as they continued their momentum following the impact of 1980’s “Ace Of Spades.”

“I knew it’d be the live one that went best, because we’re really a live band,” said Lemmy about their homeland chart success. “You can’t listen to a record and find out what we’re about. You’ve got to see us.”

The album took its title from an inscription painted on one of the band’s trucks, referencing the 32 gigs they were playing with only two days off.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, “No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith” will be presented in new deluxe editions; there will be hardback book-packs in two CD and triple LP formats, featuring a new remaster of the original album, bonus tracks and the previously unreleased - in its entirety - concert from Newcastle City Hall, March 30, 1981, as well as many previously unseen photos.

A 4CD box set presents the original album plus all three concerts recorded for the album – issued in their entirety for the very first time – plus memorabilia, incuding posters from the 1981 tour, a reproduction USA tour pass, a European tour badge, a reproduction Newcastle City Hall ticket, a Port Vale gig flyer post card, and a Motorhead guitar pick.

David Gilmour and Peter Green reimagine vintage Fleetwood Mac classic

David Gilmour and Peter Green can be heard on a newly-reimagined version of the 1955 Little Willie John blues classic, “Need Your Love So Bad”, in the first preview of a forthcoming book about the Fleetwood Mac founder.

Green and the UK band initially scored some UK chart success with their own 1968 single of the tune; this version mixes the singer’s vocals from a home recording in the 1960s with a new musical landscape created by Gilmour as one of two new tracks included with “The Albatross Man”, an illustrated book of Green’s life and career that will be published in October in sync with the late rocker’s 75th birthday.

While working with publishers on the project, Green heard and approved of the song’s treatment before he passed away, peacefully in his sleep, on July 25, 2020 at the age of 73.

“The Albatross Man” will also include a new version of Fleetwood Mac’s 1969 UK Top 5 hit, “Man Of The World”, featuring Kirk Hammett from Metallica using Peter's original famous Les Paul.

Gilmour was among the artists who participated in an early 2020 all-star concert tribute to Green; the Mick Fleetwood And Friends event was recently made available via streaming services after planned cinema screenings were cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Who: Roger Daltrey reveals origins of microphone swinging

Roger Daltrey of The Who revealed the origins of his legendary microphone swinging technique during an April 26 appearance on NBC-TV’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

"I did it out of pure boredom, actually," explained Daltrey. "I was on a stage with two maniacs and a very straight bass player and I just got bored. I thought, 'I've got this thing in my hand and I'm fed up with holding it up there [next to my face] so what do I do with it?' So I kind of threw it and I held onto the cord and of course it came back. I thought, 'Well that's kind of interesting. Let's see what more I can do.'

"I went on to be pretty good with that thing. I could take a cigarette out of someone's mouth from about 20 yards, which is quite good, you know. I was really quite a good shot with that thing but I can't see now of course…I throw it out and now I just pray that it comes down somewhere [near me]."

Daltrey was on the late night program to promote his involvement in “Rock Camp The Movie”, a film that spotlights four campers at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp as they get advice from, and play along with, rock legends.

Directed by Douglas Blush and Renee Barron, the documentary features appearances by Alice Cooper, Sammy Hagar, Judas Priest, Joe Perry, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS and more.

Daltrey and The Who recently released an expanded reissue of their 1967 album, “The Who Sell Out.”

The doc features interviews with an array of iconic figures spanning eras and genres, including Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee, Pat Smear, Ringo Starr, Flea, Brian Johnson, St. Vincent, Slash, Duff McKagan, Ben Harper, The Edge, Mike Watt, Ian Mackaye, Starcrawler, RadKey, Exene Cervenka, Tony Kanal, DH Peligro, Charlie Gabriel, Jennifer Finch, Dave Lombardo, Kira Roessler, Pete Stahl, Lars Ulrich and Steven Tyler.

Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones survives second cancer diagnosis

Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones is sharing the news that he survived a second cancer diagnosis during lockdown.

The Sun reports Wood has confirmed that he had a variant of the disease after previously facing a battle with lung cancer.

“I’ve had cancer two different ways now,” explains Wood. “I had lung cancer in 2017 and I had small-cell more recently that I fought in the last lockdown.”

The 73-year-old rocker – who has six children, including twin girls in 2016 – says working on paintings of wife Sally, and the 4-year-old girls, as well as being sober for a decade and putting his fate in the hands of a “higher power” helped him through his latest cancer fight.

“I came through with the all-clear,” adds Wood.

Last year, The Rolling Stones postponed their No Filter North American tour amid the coronavirus pandemic; the 15-date series was scheduled to open last May in San Diego, CA and wrap up in Atlanta, GA in early July.

Last fall, Wood released his documentary, “Somebody Up There Likes Me”; directed by Mike Figgis and billed as “the first in-depth film biography” of the guitarist, the project traces Wood’s 50-year musical history, from The Birds, The Jeff Beck Group, The Faces (with Rod Stewart), and The New Barbarians, to becoming a permanent member of The Rolling Stones.

Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson announces spoken word UK tour

Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson has announced dates for his first-ever spoken-word tour of the UK.

The series – who has previously performed his “An Evening With” events in Europe and elsewhere – sees the rocker recounting stories from his life as presented in the 2017 memoir, “What Does This Button Do.”

Dickinson worked on the autobiography extensively while on the road for the band’s world tour in support of 2015’s “The Book Of Souls”, which covered 39 countries and 117 shows since February 2016. Dickinson filled seven A4 notebooks by writing his story in longhand, in addition to his duties as a performer and as the pilot of Iron Maiden’s 747 jumbo jet Ed Force One as he flew band, crew and 22 tons of equipment around the globe.

“What Does This Button Do?” debuted at No. 1 on the UK’s Sunday Times Bestsellers List and No. 10 on the New York Times' Hardcover Non-Fiction Best-Seller List upon its release.

"An Evening With Bruce Dickinson" will open in Brighton on August 1, with tickets for all shows going on sale Thursday, April 29 at 10 a.m.

Iron Maiden recently postponed their planned European leg of The Legacy Of The Beast tour to 2022 “due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on global live events and travel.”

Queen broke new ground with 1975 masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody

Queen broke new ground in the music industry when they created their 1975 masterpiece, “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

The lead single from “A Night At The Opera” was written by Freddie Mercury, who oversaw the complex song’s full creation in the studio during three weeks of recording.

Mixing elements of progressive rock, hard rock and opera and coming in at almost six minutes in length, the tune was initially considered too long by band management and music industry insiders to be issued as a single in an era when three minutes was considered the standard.

According to legend, the band “leaked” the song to some influential radio hosts, which left fans searching record stores ahead of its eventual release, where it went on to top the UK singles chart for 9 consecutive weeks while earning No.1 status in several countries.

Prior to heading out on the road in support of their fourth studio album, Queen filmed a video that would be offered to media to promote the song while they were on tour; directed by Bruce Gowers and costing just £4500, the “Bohemian Rhapsody” clip is widely regarded to have given birth to the practice of creating music videos to boost sales, even though they had been previously done by artists for years.

“It’s the first video that actually took any kind of effect into actually making sales,” explained Mercury in the latest episode of the band’s weekly feature, “The Greatest.” “A lot of videos were probably made before, but they didn’t sell records. I think that’s the first that actually worked.”

“We used an outside broadcast sports unit to bring in their cameras into Elstree (Studios) where we were rehearsing,”
recalled Roger Taylor. “And we could go on the road and that (video) could be on ‘Top Of The Pops’ and we realized ‘wow you don’t even have to be here to promote your record now’…just make one of these little video films and that’s got to be the way in the future. We were the first to do that.”

“To be honest,”
admitted Brian May, “we weren’t too keen on going on ’Top Of The Pops’ and standing on those little podiums and kind of miming ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ It would have been really crap.”

“Bohemian Rhapsody” went on to become the only song to sell over a million copies on two occasions in the UK, is the most-streamed song of the 20th Century, and in March 2021 reached the extremely rare RIAA Diamond status in the US, making Queen the first British band ever to earn this award … while the promo became the first pre-1990’s music video to pass the 1 billion views milestone on YouTube.

The song’s life was extended when it became the title of Queen’s 2018 biopic; directed by Dexter Fletcher, the film – which follows Queen from their formation in 1970 through to their legendary 1985 Live Aid appearance – won four Academy Awards including Best Actor to Rami Malek for his portrayal of Mercury, and earned more than $900 million dollars at the box office to become the highest-grossing music biopic in history.
