Pink Floyd revisit cover shoot for Animals reissue

Pink Floyd are revisiting the cover shoot in a new video spotlighting the September 16 reissue of their 1977 album classic, “Animals.”

The iconic cover on the original release captures an inflatable pig in the skies above London’s Battersea Power Station; the concept was reimagined by Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis for the 2018 remixed version of the set.

As the power plant was under regeneration and the surrounding area was likely to be dramatically changed, the art director moved quickly to capture a new image inspired by the original cover shoot.

“I found a location from a nearby bridge,” explains Powell, “and with photographer Rupert Truman, I shot Roger Waters’ original idea but with a different slant. I then muted the colors to give the picture the bleak Orwellian feel of the record. The new album cover caught the essence of the original just in time.”

Pink Floyd’s tenth studio album was recorded at the group's Britannia Row Studios in London throughout 1976 and early 1977, and was produced by the band themselves. The project reached No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 2 in their native UK.

“Animals” is a concept album, focusing on the social-political conditions of mid-1970s Britain, and was a change from the style of the band's earlier work. The album was developed from a collection of unrelated songs into a concept which describes the apparent social and moral decay of society, likening the human condition to that of animals.

Taking inspiration from George Orwell's “Animal Farm”, the album depicts the different classes of people as animals with pigs being at the top of the social chain, dropping down to the sheep as the mindless herd following what they are told, with dogs as the business bosses getting fat on the money and power they hold over the other.

“Animals 2018 Remix” will be released on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), Blu-ray, SACD and Deluxe Gatefold formats. The Deluxe Gatefold version includes LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. The Blu-ray and DVD audio include the 2018 remix in Stereo, 5.1 Surround (both by James Guthrie) and the original 1977 Stereo mix. A 32-page booklet features rarely seen behind the scenes photographs of the album sleeve shoot along with live images and memorabilia.

The individual versions will be available on September 16 with a Deluxe version available from October 7; this is the first time the album will be available in 5.1 Surround Sound.

Anthrax cancel European tour

Anthrax has canceled its previously-announced shows in continental Europe this fall.

“Sadly due to ongoing logistical issues and 2022 costs that are out of our control, we have no other option but to cancel the European leg of our upcoming 2022 tour,” shared the band on social media. “We will however be coming to the UK as scheduled.

“Tickets can be refunded at point of purchase.”

The New York thrash outfit has been playing dates on a 40th anniversary tour; the UK run will begin as scheduled on September 27 in Birmingham, UK, with shows wrapping up in London on October 8.

Dates affected by the European tour cancellation were set to begin October 10 in Brussels, Belgium and wrap up in Zurich, Switzerland on November 5.

The group recently released “Anthrax XL”, a package presenting the band’s July 2021 livestream event that saw them perform an extensive two-plus hour set at the Los Angeles soundstage/studio The Den to mark their anniversary.

Queensryche are streaming a video for “Behind The Walls”, a track from their forthcoming album, “Digital Noise Alliance.”

“It is a story about those in crisis dealing with various forms of abuse,” says the band. “The protagonist is faced with the dichotomy of reconciling a lifetime of devout faith, while suffering immense abuse with no intervention.”

“Behind The Walls” follows “In Extremis” and “Forest” as the third preview to the 2022 album; due October 7, the band recorded the follow-up to 2019’s “The Verdict” with producer Chris "Zeuss" Harris.

“Digital Noise Alliance” will mark the recording debut of touring drummer Casey Grillo, who’s been in the band’s lineup since 2017 (singer Todd La Torre handled drums on the 2019 album).

Red Hot Chili Peppers named Global Icon at 2022 MTV Video Music Awards

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were honored with a Global Icon Award during the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on August 28.

Prior to receiving the honor from Cheech and Chong, the band delivered their first VMA performance in over two decades with versions of “Black Summer’ from the 2022 album, “Unlimited Love”, and “Can’t Stop” from 2002’s “By The Way.”

During the band’s acceptance speech, as Rolling Stone notes, drummer Chad Smith remembered his late colleague and friend, Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins.

“There’s another musical icon, global icon, and his name is my brother Taylor Hawkins,” Smith said after taking the mic from Anthony Kiedis. “I want to dedicate this to Taylor and his family. I love them, and I miss him every day. Fly on, Hawk. Fly on, brother.”

Smith will be among the artists appearing at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert on September 27 at The Kia Forum in Los Angeles, which will follow a September 3 event at London’s Wembley Stadium.

The Chili Peppers also won the Best Rock award at the MTV event, which took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

The band is currently playing shows on the North American leg of a global stadium tour in support of “Unlimited Love”; they will release another new album, “Return Of The Dream Canteen”, on October 14.

The Rolling Stones share rare 1967 We Love You video

The Rolling Stones are sharing a rare video for their 1967 single, “We Love You”.

Directed by Peter Whitehead and newly restored in 4K, the clip includes visual references to the infamous Redlands bust of February 1967, involving Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and singer Marianne Faithfull, the subsequent criminal trial, as well as the drug bust of Brian Jones later that same year.

The dragging chains and prison door sound effects that begin the song and are illustrated in the video were inspired by the February 12, 1967 police raid of Richards’ home in Redlands, West Wittering, Sussex. Leading up to this event, British tabloid News of the World had published a series of sensationalistic stories about the drug use of pop stars, including Mick Jagger who then sued the paper for libel. News Of The World tipped off authorities to a party at Richards’ Redlands residence where it was believed that drugs were to be present. Marianne Faithfull, who had just come out of the bath inside the home the moment 18 officers showed up, quickly covered herself in a fur rug. A trivial quantity of controlled substances was found, but Jagger, Richards and art dealer Robert Fraser were still charged with major drug offenses and all three were handed draconian prison sentences that June. The two Stones were bailed out pending appeal, which they won, after spending one night in prison.

On the day Jagger and Richards were released, Brian Jones and his girlfriend were arrested on charges of drug possession. This series of events is thought to be the spearhead of a generational rift in British culture, where older journalists working with the authorities had an adversarial relationship with younger musicians; life-altering consequences hung in the balance of this clash of values.

In the time between the February Redlands bust and the court proceedings, Jagger, Richards, Jones and Jones’ girlfriend Anita Pallenberg escaped the unfolding media circus by visiting Morocco. The trip was an inspiration for the general sound of “We Love You”; Jones in particular fell in love with the music of the North African nation, leading him to produce Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka by the Master Musicians of Joujouka the following year.

Recorded at Olympic Studios in the summer of ’67, “We Love You” has Jones on Mellotron, Nicky Hopkins on piano, and backing vocals by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who were returning the favor just after Jagger and Richards had contributed vocals to The Beatles“All You Need Is Love.”

In the 1960s, there were very few television programs where music videos could be played. BBC’s Top of the Pops refused to give “We Love You” airtime, with the rationale that it was not suitable for the show’s audience. TOTP’s producer denied the theory that the video was banned by the BBC; regardless, very few people were able to see it upon its initial release.

“We Love You” was still a No. 8 single the UK, while it was released as the B-side to “Dandelion” in the US, hitting No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Earlier this month, The Rolling Stones wrapped up their 60th anniversary European tour in Berlin, Germany.

Pasadena to host Van Halen Stage dedication ceremony

The City of Pasadena, CA will host a dedication ceremony for the Van Halen Stage on Saturday, September 10.

Originally conceptualized as a tribute to Eddie Van Halen following his passing in 2020, a city-wide survey last year saw residents nominate the venue to be named Eddie Van Halen Park but, as Pasadena Now reports, the Van Halen family then requested that the stage area be named for the entire Van Halen band and officials amended a recommendation on the name change to celebrate the group, which was formed in 1972 by local legends and brothers Alex and Eddie Van Halen.

The Van Halen Stage is part of a new 1-acre Playhouse Village Park, located at 701 East Union Street between El Molino Avenue and Oak Knoll Avenue; it includes a children’s play area, a dog run, a trellised structure over the sitting/stage area, lighted pathways, restroom and storage building, and a 48-space parking lot.

The September 10 event will see the City dedicate the new park and the Van Halen Stage with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. followed by a community celebration from 10 a.m. to noon.

According to the District 3 Council office, no speakers have yet been named for the ceremony.

The adopted hometown of the brothers Van Halen, Pasadena honored Eddie last year with a memorial plaque on a wall outside of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, where Van Halen performed 14 times between 1975 and 1978 before the release of their groundbreaking 1978 self-titled debut album.

Van Halen were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007.

David Bowie previews Moonage Daydream soundtrack album

David Bowie’s team are streaming audio of an exclusive mix of the rocker’s 1983 hit, “Modern Love”, ahead of its inclusion in the film and companion soundtrack album to the upcoming documentary, “Moonage Daydream.”

Directed by Brett Morgen, the project is billed as “a new feature film, concert documentary and experiential cinematic odyssey” that follows Bowie’s life and musical career.

The first film sanctioned by Bowie’s estate shares its title with the song from the singer’s 1972 album classic, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” which introduced the world to his iconic, gender-bending, and groundbreaking stage persona Ziggy Stardust.

The film will feature Bowie through his own voice and feature 48 musical tracks, mixed from their original stems.

The newly-announced soundtrack album features songs spanning Bowie’s career and includes previously unheard material, unique mixes created for the film and this release along with dialogue from Bowie himself.

Highlights include a previously unreleased live medley of “The Jean Genie / Love Me Do / The Jean Genie” recorded live at the final Ziggy Stardust concert at Hammersmith Odeon in 1973, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar’ other rarities include an early version of the “Hunky Dory” favourite, “Quicksand”, and a previously=unreleased live version of “Rock ’n’ Roll With Me” from the legendary 1974 Soul Tour.

“Moonage Daydream” will screen in cinemas and select IMAX theaters on September 16, with HBO Documentary Films securing North American rights for streaming and cable in spring 2023.

The companion soundtrack will be issued in sync with the September 16 launch, with a 2CD version due November 18 and a 3LP edition to arrive next year,

Neal Schon performs Don’t Stop Believin’ on America’s Got Talent

Journey guitarist Neal Schon was on hand to perform the Journey smash, “Don’t Stop Believin’”, on the August 24 episode of NBC-TV’s America’s Got Talent.

Schon was joined by Season 14 winner, pianist and singer Kodi Lee, and singer Teddy Swims for the song, in sync with this week’s release of Swims’ version as his latest single.

“Thank you all at @agt for a truly great and memorable time,” shared Schon on social media.

This past spring, “Don’t Stop Believin’” was named as one of 25 sound recordings selected for induction into the US Library Of Congress National Recording Registry, which highlights recordings that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and are at least 10 years old.

The second single from Journey’s 1981 album, “Escape”, was a US Top 10 hit and went on to sell more than 7 million copies in the region, with the Library Of Congress describing it as a “perfect rock song, While it has never left the airwaves — or Journey’s set list — the song has gained further cultural permanence via its frequent use at sporting games, in the Broadway rock musical “Rock of Ages” and in film and television, most notably the cryptic final episode of “The Sopranos” and in the debut episode of ‘Glee.’”

“Don’t Stop Believin’” passed 1 billion streams on Spotify last year.

“This album has a great combination and balance of songs, and the collection tells a great overall story,” says Monroe, who became internationally famous as frontman of the enormously influential Hanoi Rocks in the early ‘80s. “It has a lot of color and energy, and of course it is rock ’n’ roll, but punk is also always going to be a part of who we are, that will never die."

Monroe will wrap up his current live dates with an August 27 show in Sheffield, UK and a September 23 performance in Helsinki.

Whitesnake share 2022 remix of Forevermore

Whitesnake are sharing a 2022 remix of “Forevermore”, from their remastered “Greatest Hits” collection.

The song was the title track to the band’s 2011 album, which was a Top 40 record in their native UK and Top 20 in some European countries.

The “Greatest Hits” collection primarily features material from three studio records: 1984’s “Slide It In”, 1987’s self-titled album and “Slip Of The Tongue”, as well as featuring other deep cuts and rarities.

“Greatest Hits” is now available on digital and streaming services worldwide, alongside CD, 2LP and CD/Blu-ray editions .

Metallica share Pittsburgh performance of Enter Sandman

Metallica are sharing video of a performance of their 1991 classic, “Enter Sandman”, from an August 14 show at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA.

The lead single from “Metallica” delivered the California band’s commercial breakthrough as their first studio record to top the US charts; the project remains the top-selling album in the US since MRC Data began electronically tracking music sales in 1991, with 17.3 million copies sold.

The Pittsburgh gig was one of three recent US dates for the group, who headlinined Chicago’s Lollapalooza on July 28 and played in Buffalo, NY on August 11.

Metallica are scheduled to next appear at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City’s Central Park on September 24.

For 10 years, Global Citizens have been taking action and calling on world and corporate leaders to make meaningful commitments to achieve the end of extreme poverty. The world’s biggest artists have helped amplify those calls and achieve an astounding amount of impact. Since Global Citizen built its first stage in 2012, Global Citizens have taken over 30 million actions, leading to over $41.1B in dispersed funding that’s impacting the lives of over 1.15 billion people.

Mastodon stream Hushed And Grim documentary

Mastodon are streaming a new documentary about the making of their 2021 album, “Hushed and Grim.”

The 90-minute project – which chronicles the Atlanta band’s critically-acclaimed 9th studio album – is an intimate look at the group’s creative process, which was largely influenced by the untimely death of their longtime friend and manager, Nick John, who passed away while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2018.

The film also intertwines comedic skits that showcase the band’s lighter, more humorous, dynamic.

Upon its release last fall, “Hushed And Grim” debuted at No. 20 on the US Billboard 200; the set features 15 songs that survey sonic landscapes of rock, psychedelia, punk, metal, alternative, and prog while maintaining the group’s strong musical identity.

Mastodon will join Ghost and Spiritbox on a North American tour that will open in San Diego, CA on August 26.

The song was the second single from “Hardwired... to Self-Destruct”, a project that earned Metallica a place in US chart history when it became only the second time that any band of any genre would have six consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200.

The group delivered a 16-song set in Pittsburgh, which opened with their 1983 tune, “Whiplash”, and finished with the 1986 classic, “Master Of Puppets.”

Metallica will next be seen performing at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City’s Central Park on September 24.

The Kinks share 2022 remix from Muswell Hillbillies reissue

The Kinks are sharing a new Ray Davies 2022 remix of “Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues” from the forthcoming 50th anniversary reissue of their 1971 album, “Musewell Hillbillies.”

Due September 9, the band will release remastered editions of their tenth studio record as well as 1972’s “Everyone’s In Show-Biz.”

The projects originally marked the start of a new chapter for the UK band: they signed a new record deal with RCA, looked back on their upbringing in London and began to turn their attention to the American public.

“’Muswell Hillbillies’ is one-of my favorite Kink’s albums,” says Dave Davies. “It’s a bit of a backstory to the Davies family and the characters involved.”

Both albums will be available in a Deluxe Box Set package as well as individual LP and CD editions; for full details, visit thekinks.info.

Motley Crue stream Too Young To Fall In Love remastered video

Mötley Crüe are streaming a remastered version of the video for their 1983 “Shout At The Devil” single, "Too Young To Fall In Love."

The song followed the album’s title track and “Looks That Kill” as the third tune issued from the Los Angeles band’s second record, which delivered their commercial breakthrough when it reached No. 17 on the US Billboard 200 on its way to sales of more than 4 million in the region.

“Shout At The Devil” was recorded at Cherokee Studios in Hollywood and produced by Tom Werman.

Motley Crue are currently playing dates on a North American stadium tour with Def Leppard.

Following a series of pandemic delays, the trek – which opened in Atlanta, GA on June 16 – comes seven years after the band signed an agreement that they would no longer perform together after the end of their official farewell tour in 2015.

The 2022 stadium series is scheduled to wrap up in Las Vegas, NV on September 9.
