The Who announce 50th anniversary farewell tour

The Who have announced the first series of dates for a 50th anniversary farewell tour.

“The Who Hits 50!” will see the band present an overview of their career, from The High Numbers to today.

The show, which guitarist Pete Townshend describes as ‘hits, picks, mixes and misses’, will see the band play all the classic anthems as well as deeper cuts from their extensive catalogue.

The Who will kick off their farewell with an 11-date UK tour starting November 26 in Dublin, Ireland; shows will wrap up December 17 at the 02 in London.

Pre-sale tickets are available now; general public tickets will go on sale this Friday, July 5 at 9:00 AM local time.

“This is the beginning of the long goodbye,” says singer Roger Daltrey.

“Trying to stay young. Not wearing socks. Growing a great big woodcutter’s beard. Might even wear a check shirt on stage and get a tattoo of a Union Jack. Always a fashion victim,” says Townshend. “But under no illusions. We are what we are, and extremely good at it, but we’re lucky to be alive and still touring. If I had enough hairs to split I would say that for thirteen years since 1964 The Who didn’t really exist, so we are really only thirty-seven.”

VIDEO: Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder drinks wine from fan’s shoe in Sweden

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder playfully drank wine from a fan’s shoe during a concert in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday, and fan-filmed video from the event is available.

Blabbermouth reports a girl near the front of the stage held up a sign during the show at the city’s Friends Arena that read, "Please sign my shoe." Vedder had the fan throw the shoes up on stage to him before he and the band broke into the first song of their encore, “Just Breathe.”

The singer signed one of the shoes following the tune and sent it back into the crowd with a bottle of wine he had just finished.

"Okay, I'm gonna do you one better,” said Vedder. “I trust you." The rocker then proceeded to fill the other Converse shoe with wine from a newly-opened bottle and drank from it before tossing it back to the fan.

The Stockholm show was one stop on Pearl Jam’s European tour in support of their latest album, “Lightning Bolt.”

The month-long trek runs to July 11 at Milton Keynes, UK.

Pearl Jam will return to live action this fall for a US tour that will kick off in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 1.

VIDEO: Alice Cooper debuts new guitarist Nita Strauss

Alice Cooper debuted his new guitarist Nita Strauss during a series of three solo dates in Michigan as he and the band warm up for the launch of the Motley Crue farewell tour in Grand Rapids on Wednesday.

Formerly of the all-girl tribute band The Iron Maidens, Strauss recently replaced Orianthi in Cooper’s band and the Crue trek will be her first with the group.

Earlier this month, the shock rocker released the new documentary film, “Super Duper Alice Cooper.”

Available on DVD, Blu-ray and Deluxe Limited Edition box, the project tells the tale of how preacher’s son Vincent Furnier went on to strike fear into the hearts of parents as Alice Cooper.

Produced by Banger Films ("Metal: A Headbangers Journey", "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage"), “Super Duper Alice Cooper” is a blend of documentary archive footage, animation and rock opera.

The DVD and Blu-ray version of the film includes bonus deleted scenes, Alice Cooper interviews from the VH1 Classic series "Metal Evolution", and additional rare footage.

The Deluxe Edition features not only the full film on DVD and Blu-ray, but also a second DVD of previously unreleased concert footage from Montreal University in 1972, and a CD of Cooper's performance at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival, all housed in an LP-sized box with 60-page hardback photobook.

VIDEO: Watch Metallica’s complete Glastonbury Festival performance

Metallica made history on Saturday as the first metal band to headline the legendary Glastonbury Festival, and fans can now watch video of their full performance.

The band hit the stage following “Glastallica”, an introductory video directed by Julien Temple created especially for the event (watch it here).

Metallica opened their 14-song set with the 1984 classic, “Creeping Death”, blazing through songs spanning their full career. A pair of encore tunes included “Whiskey In The Jar” and “Seek & Destroy.”

In the weeks leading up to the event, the band faced some backlash from traditional Glastonbury supporters who felt heavy metal didn’t fit in with the vibe of the festival, and frontman James Hetfield addressed the issue early in the show.

"Metallica is grateful to be invited to such an event as the Glastonbury Festival," said Hetfield. "We are very proud to be here and be representing, shall we say, the heavier sides of music. I know it’s all represented here, so why not heavy rock/heavy metal, huh. It's about time.”

VIDEO: David Lee Roth performs acoustic blues in Tokyo

David Lee Roth has posted video of an acoustic blues performance recorded at a studio in Tokyo, Japan.

Billed as “The Oo-oka River Blues”, the Van Halen frontman can be seen playing slide on his acoustic guitar while sitting on the floor of Onkio Haus studios, interspersed with footage of the rocker performing some of his martial arts moves.

The song is attributed to David Lee Roth and the Kabuki Orchestra.

Roth became a resident of Tokyo in 2012; he continues to maintain homes in New York City and Pasadena, California.

Reports indicate Van Halen are actively working on a new album, the follow-up to 2012’s “A Different Kind Of Truth.”

In a recent episode of The Roth Show, the singer revealed that he has been working on a secret Van Halen project.

“Doing some catching up here, a little bit of a scrapbook,” said the singer. “We’ve been doing a lot of travelling. [I’ve been] working on a great Van Halen project - can’t announce anything … or I’d have to come find you and swear you to secrecy.”

Second on a bill headlined by Metallica, White’s 16-song set featured a mixture of White Stripes tunes, solo tracks and cuts from his latest release.

White will now play a week-long series of dates across Europe before kicking off a US tour on July 19 in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Lazaretto” recently delivered White his second US No. 1 album.

The rocker topped the Billboard 200 album chart with opening week sales of 138,000 copies.

White previously debuted on top with his 2012 effort, “Blunderbuss.”

"Lazaretto" also set a new record for the largest sales week for a vinyl album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

The vinyl LP sold 40,000 copies to debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Vinyl Albums chart.

“Lazaretto” broke the vinyl sales record set by Pearl Jam's "Vitalogy," which moved 34,000 vinyl LPs in its first week back in 1994. Notably, "Vitalogy" was issued on vinyl first, two weeks before its release on CD and cassette.

Metallica release Glastonbury introduction video directed by Julien Temple

Metallica became the first metal band to headline the UK’s prestigious Glastonbury Festival on Saturday, and the group are sharing the specially-prepared, Julien Temple-directed film that brought them on stage at the event.

The band made major headlines since being added to the 2014 bill, facing criticism that they don’t fit with the spirit and image of the weekend festival, and taking heat for James Hetfield’s involvement as the narrator of “The Hunt”, a new series about bear hunting in Alaska that debuted on The History Channel earlier this month.

“We have been going for so long that people don't expect us to put on a heavy metal band," Glastonbury promoter Michael Eavis told the BBC. "We had Rage Against The Machine and we have had lots of fairly heavy metal bands in the past but this is not a typical headline. We usually have bands like Radiohead, Coldplay and U2, the Rolling Stones, but I am really looking forward to them."

"There's no other band in the whole history of the festival that has been so keen to play,” he added, “they will do the best set of their lives here."

Other headline acts at this year's festival, which is held on Eavis' Somerset farm from June 25-29, include Arcade Fire and Kasabian.

Launched in 1970, Glastonbury is one of the longest-running festivals in the UK.

KISS members featured in new AMC series 4th And Loud

KISS members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons are featured in a new AMC series, “4th And Loud”, which focuses on the launch of the pair’s Arena Football League team, the L.A. KISS.

The 10-episode series will follow the duo, along with fellow co-owners, long-time KISS manager Doc McGhee, managing partner/owner Brett Bouchy and president/owner Schuyler Hoversten as they and the players and coaches work to turn L.A.'s first professional football team in years into a winning franchise.

As part of the 14-team Arena Football League, the L.A. KISS are the fourth AFL team to represent Los Angeles and the second to play at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

"We are thrilled to partner with AMC in bringing our show to the viewing public," says Stanley. "Anyone who knows Gene and I know we have never played by the rules. This opportunity to see the making of our team of rebels, the LA KISS, from behind the scenes will once again show everyone that we play to win."

"We look forward to capturing all the trials and tribulations of launching a sports franchise in a great sports city like Los Angeles," adds AMC's senior vice president of unscripted programming Eliot Goldberg. "These are incredibly dedicated athletes, coaches and management who want to win, and the fact that the team has rock and roll royalty in the owners' box just adds another great dimension to the series."

"4th And Loud" will premiere on AMC on Tuesday, August 5 at 10/9c.

VIDEO: Jack White keeps playing after power cut off in Dublin

Ahead of his appearance at the Glastonbury Festival this weekend, Jack White performed a show at Dublin’s Royal Hospital Kilmainham alongside The Kills on Thursday.

Consequence Of Sound reports that over the course of the 25-song set, White collaborated with Kills frontwoman and Dead Weather bandmate Alison Mosshart, first inviting her on-stage for “Love Interruption” and later, Mosshart and Kills bandmate Jamie Hince for “Goodnight, Irene”.

During “Goodnight, Irene”, the venue pulled the plug due to curfew, but White and the band kept playing anyway and had the audience join in.

White will officially kick off a summer European tour in support of his new album, “Lazaretto”, at Glastonbury; he’ll follow Robert Plant’s set and appear just before Metallica deliver the first headline show by a metal band at the legendary event.

Due July 29, “Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale” features a collection of 16 Cale tunes revisited by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White.

I try to interpret things so that the public at large, or at least the people who listen to what I do, will become intrigued about where I got it from.”

Cale passed away from a heart attack in La Jolla, California on July 26, 2013 at the age of 74 (read more details here).

Rob Zombie to host 10th annual Johnny Ramone Tribute

Rob Zombie will host the 10th annual Johnny Ramone Tribute at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on August 24.

Presented by Johnny's wife, Linda Ramone, the event will feature live music, exhibits and a special outdoor screening under the stars of Zombie's classic film, “The Devil's Rejects.”

For the all-star live jam, Zombie will be joined by Johnny's dear friend, punk legend Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) as well as Duff McKagan plus very special surprise guests for some Ramones hits and punk rock classics.

The concert will be held in the Hollywood Forever's Masonic Lodge and broadcast outside to the overflow crowd.

Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Saturday Night Live) will also be appearing at the tribute and will bring along his punk rock alter ego, Ian Rubbish, to the festivities.

Metallica guitarist Kirk "Von" Hammett's special collection of horror movie memorabilia will also be on hand for fans to check out. Rarely seen in public, the collection includes a treasure trove of movie posters, props, toys and costumes from his personal collection.

There will also be an autograph signing session featuring the cult stars from Rob Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects."

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Johnny Ramone Foundation and Dr. David Agus, USC.

Tickets for the 10th annual Johnny Ramone Tribute are available here.

Johnny Ramone, whose real name was John Cummings, was one of the founding members of the legendary New York City-based punk band The Ramones, members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Considered one of the most influential guitarists in rock, he died in 2004 at age 55 after battling prostrate cancer for five years.

"It is with the greatest regret that Jeff Beck has been forced to cancel the forthcoming European dates of his worldwide tour, set to begin in Austria on 27 June," posted the rocker’s team on his social media sites. Pearl Jam reveal story behind Let It Go cover

Pearl Jam turned some heads last Friday in Milan, Italy when they performed a snippet from “Let It Go”, the smash hit from the animated Disney movie Frozen, and now frontman Eddie Vedder is sharing the story behind the band’s cover.

A close friend of Vedder’s, cartoonist Tom Tomorrow, tweeted the details on the rocker’s bahelf, writing, “So that clip of Pearl Jam doing the song from Frozen? That was a request -- from Eddie Vedder's five year old daughter.”

“Just got off the phone with Ed and he told me I should tweet that,” he added, with a final follow-up, “He also wants everyone to know that his daughter sings it better.”

Vedder and his wife Jill have two daughters, 10-year old Olivia and 5-year old Harper.

The tune appeared during the extended jam section of 1993’s “Daughter”, one of the songs featured in the first set of encores.

Recorded by Idina Menzel, "Let It Go" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 86th Academy Awards in March.

Pearl Jam are currently playing shows across Europe in support of their latest album, “Lightning Bolt.” The tour includes two festival appearances: Poland's Open'er Festival on July 3 and Belgium's Rock Werchter on July 5; the month-long trek runs to July 11 at Milton Keynes, UK.

Pearl Jam will kick off a US tour this fall in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 1.

The first video below is the “Let It Go” portion of “Daughter” only; the second features the full performance of “Daughter” (“Let It Go” starts approx 3:45 in) and “Jeremy” from the show.
