Megadeth launch 35th anniversary with Lying In State video release

Megadeth have launched their 35th anniversary celebrations with the release of a video for “Lying In State”, a track from their 2016 album “Dystopia.”

“When I started Megadeth, I didn’t imagine myself living for 35 years, let alone my band reaching this incredible milestone,” says co-founder Dave Mustaine. “Thanks to almost everyone I’ve met, worked, and played with these last three and a half decades.”

Mustaine co-formed Megadeth with bassist David Ellefson in Los Angeles in 1983, shortly after the guitarist’s dismissal from Metallica.

“Lying In State” is the first offering by the band as they begin their 35th anniversary celebrations this year, which will feature special releases and events.

"When we were on tour in São Paulo in 2016, we filmed the 'Conquer or Die' video," Mustaine tells Rolling Stone. "We were so impressed with Brazilian award-winning director Leo Liberti, that we had him do the 'Lying in State' video as well. We had several friends and fans of the band, as well as the production crew, play roles in the video. Huge thanks goes to [Megadeth lead guitarist] Kiko Loureiro for introducing us to Leo. I especially like how bad ass Vic was with the sword. Who knew?"

While Megadeth are the highest-profile U.S. act he's worked with, Liberti's Libertà Filmes group has won Latin Grammys, Cannes Lions and CLIOs over the years.

The group’s 15th studio set, “Dystopia” debuted at No.3 on the US Billboard 200 upon its release, and the album’s title track won Megadeth their first-ever Grammy Award in the Best Metal Performance category at the 2017 event.

Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain to publish memoir

Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain will publish his memoir, "Don't Stop Believin'", on May 1.

Co-written with Travis Thrasher, the project marks the first book by a member of the San Francisco, CA band that continues to sell out arenas and stadiums around the globe.

Alongside Steve Perry and Neal Schon, Cain is co-writer of the number one digital catalog song in history, "Don't Stop Believin'", as well as several other hits by the group.

The memoir sees Cain share stories from his childhood growing up in Chicago and the lasting impact surviving a horrific school fire had on his life. The multi-instrumentalist’s love for music and his perseverance brought him to Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles where he discovered a wild rock scene before getting his big break.

"Don't Stop Believin'" includes revelations about Journey's history – including Perry's decision to leave the band – chronicling their massive success along with some surprising failures and Cain’s hopes to leave a lasting legacy through his music.

Cain also shares about his marriage to pastor Paula White, which has caused some friction in the Journey camp in the past year following the group’s induction into the 2017 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Just months after the honor, an apparent feud between Schon and Cain went public, with both parties directing social media posts at each other while singer Arnel Pineda attempted to calm the waters as mediator.

Journey will team up with Def Leppard for an extensive co-headlining tour of North America.

The 6-month, 58-city trek will see the bands switch headlining slots from the time it opens in Hartford, CT on May 21 until it wraps up in Los Angeles in early October.

Various presales are on now with general public seats available Saturday, February 3 at 10 AM local time at Ticketmaster.com

Stone Temple Pilots stream new single Roll Me Under and expand US tour

The Stone Temple Pilots are streaming a new single, “Roll Me Under”, from their forthcoming self-titled album ahead of its release on March 16.

The track follows “Meadow” as the second tune previewed from the set, the band’s first with new lead singer Jeff Gutt.

A veteran of the Detroit music scene, Gutt was chosen during the group’s open audition call for a vocalist after the 2015 departure of Chester Bennington, who returned to Linkin Park before his passing last year.

Gutt made his live debut with the group during an exclusive November 14 show at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA.

“We are thrilled about what lies ahead,” says guitarist Dean DeLeo. “The best way for us to honor our past is to keep making new music.”

In addition to their previously-announced dates in March and festival dates this spring, Stone Temple Pilots have announced 14 new dates in May.

Pre-sale tickets are available now, with general public seats on sale Friday, February 2.

A digital copy of the new album will be included with every ticket purchased (except where noted * below).

“With so much time and experience gone by in life, we feel compelled to dig back into a 30-year catalog and really try to reflect and choose what songs haven’t been performed live,” says bassist Robert DeLeo of the band’s return to live action. “We want to give people who have come to see us in the past a chance to hear something they haven’t heard before at previous STP shows. We want to celebrate this time in lives with our performances.”

John Mellencamp to perform on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

John Mellencamp will perform on CBS-TV’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday, February 1.

The rocker will deliver the song “Easy Target” from his most recent release, “Sad Clowns & Hillbillies.”

Mellencamp’s 23rd studio album – which peaked at No. 11 on the US Billboard 200 – sees the singer working with country legend Carlene Carter, who opened every show of his acclaimed 2015-2016 Plain Spoken tour.

Carter is also a special guest on a documentary about the trek, “Plain Spoken: From The Chicago Theater”, which will be available for streaming on Netflix starting Thursday, February 1.

Directed by Barry Ehrmann, the project captures Mellencamp and his band in performance in support of his 2014 album, “Plain Spoken”, at the landmark Chicago Theater in October of 2016.

“Plain Spoken: From The Chicago Theater” is equal parts a concert film and documentary, with the rocker providing narration and background stories about his life and career throughout the set.

Former Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing to publish memoir

Former Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing will publish his memoir, “Heavy Duty: Days And Nights In Judas Priest”, via Da Capo Press on September 18.

Co-written with Mark Eglinton, the project explores Downing’s history with the British metal icons, who he joined in 1969 and was featured on all of the band's releases from their 1974 debut, “Rocka Rolla”, to 2009’s “A Touch of Evil: Live” before his retirement from the lineup in 2011.

“As the band approaches its golden anniversary, fans will at last be able to delve backstage into the decades of shocking, hilarious, and haunting stories that surround the heavy metal institution,” reads the memoir’s synopsis. “In Heavy Duty, guitarist K.K. Downing discusses the complex personality conflicts, the business screw-ups, the acrimonious relationship with fellow heavy metal band Iron Maiden, as well as how Judas Priest found itself at the epicenter of a storm of parental outrage that targeted heavy metal in the ’80s."

The guitarist “also describes his role in cementing the band’s trademark black leather and studs image that would not only become synonymous with the entire genre, but would also give singer Rob Halford a viable outlet by which to express his sexuality. Lastly, he recounts the life-changing moment when he looked at his bandmates on stage during a 2010 concert and thought, ‘This is the last show.’ Whatever the topic, whoever’s involved, K.K. doesn’t hold back.”

Although Downing was replaced by guitarist Richie Faulkner in 2011, he remains active in the band’s career as a member of the group’s board of directors.

Judas Priest are currently gearing up for the March 9 release of their eighteenth studio album, “Firepower.”

The set was recorded last year with producers Tom Allom and Andy Sneap.

VIDEO: Eric Clapton rocks Beatles classic on George Harrison tribute concert reissue

Eric Clapton performs The Beatles’ classic, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", in the latest video preview to the February 23 release of “Concert For George”, a 2002 tribute event in honor of George Harrison that is being reissued to mark the late guitarist’s 75th birthday on February 25.

Clapton appeared (uncredited) on the Harrison tune that first surfaced on The Beatles’ 1968 self-titled double record, commonly referred to as The White Album.

At the November 29, 2002 tribute show at London’s Royal Albert Hall organized by Clapton and Olivia Harrison, the guitarist delivered the classic song with help from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Harrison’s son, Dhani, among others.

"We will always celebrate George's birthday,” says Olivia, “and this year we are releasing Concert For George in a very special package in memory of a special man."

Directed by David Leland, “Concert For George” will be reissued as a Deluxe Edition Box Set, a 4-LP Box Set, plus new CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray combo packages.

Limited to 1000 copies worldwide, the Deluxe Box Set features the complete sound and film recordings from the concert on 4 180-gram audiophile LPs, 2 CDs, 2 DVDs and 2 Blu-rays, plus an opportunity to own a piece of the historic event, by way of a cutting from the original hand-painted on-stage tapestry used as the backdrop at the show.

The 4-LP Box Set includes the complete sound recordings from the evening, and features a special etching on side-8. This is the first time that all songs from the performance have been available on an audio configuration.

The DVD and Blu-ray feature the complete filmed concert, as well as the original theatrical version that also includes interviews with performers, rehearsal footage and behind-the-scenes material. The Blu-ray also adds an exclusive interview segment, "Drummers", where Starr and Jim Keltner add their personal thoughts on Harrison and the star-studded tribute.

“Concert For George” has been certified 8-times US platinum by the RIAA since its initial release as a 2-DVD set in November 2003, and it earned a 2004 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video.

Lynyrd Skynyrd to extend farewell tour

Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington says the band have plans to extend their recently-announced farewell tour beyond its initial four-month run.

"This farewell tour will take a year or two to go all the places we've been and play them one more time, so it's not like we're going away," Rossington tells Billboard. "We're just winding it down a little bit. We'll be doing this a while longer."

The Southern rock icons will launch the farewell trek in West Palm Beach, FL on May 4, with the first leg scheduled to wrap up in Atlanta, GA on September 1; the run will include European dates, as well, at some point.

Lynyrd Skynryd will be joined by a variety of guests at various stops along the way, including Kid Rock, Hank Williams Jr., Charlie Daniels Band, Bad Company, Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, Blackberry Smoke and Blackfoot.

The sole remaining original member of the group, Rossington hints that ‘farewell’ may not necessarily mean ‘the end’ of Skynyrd’s live performances.

"I know we're going to take some time off after this farewell tour that's all planned, and then who knows," explains the rocker. “Even, like, the Eagles and a lot of people retire for a year or two and they have to come back. It's just in your blood, y'know? So I don't know if it's really ever gonna end, but his is a plant to start to. Even if the touring ends we'll still do special shows and special guest things here and there with the whole band."

Alongside the farewell run, Lynyrd Skynyrd will record and release a new studio album – the follow-up to 2012’s “Last Of A Dyin’ Breed” – and be featured in a CMT-produced documentary.

"We have a lot of songs we've written through the years and we write a little bit here and there and have a few new songs we're gonna do," adds Rossington. "We're gonna write a little bit more in the next few months and go in and record real quick and try to get our last CD to be the best one and go out on a high note and make it as good as we can and work our butts off to do it. No projected release date has been determined for the project, however."

A Citi cardmembers presale for US dates runs from Tuesday, January 30 at 10:00 a.m. local time until Thursday, February 1 at 10:00 p.m. local time through Citi's Private Pass program, with general public seats available starting Friday, February 2 at 10:00 a.m. local time.

With more than 30 million albums sold over the course of their career, Lynyrd Skynyrd were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2006.

Bob Seger offers free download of unreleased song Finding Out

Bob Seger is offering fans a free download of his previously-unreleased track, “Finding Out.”

Available via Seger’s website, the tune was originally planned for inclusion on the singer’s 2006 album, “Face The Promise”, but was shelved and reportedly recorded during sessions for last year's “I Knew You When” release.

“I write a lot of songs that people don’t hear,” Seger told the Detroit Free Press in 2003. “I just try to take the ones that sound the best - maybe have the best lyric, or the best melody. I really just enjoy the process. I fall in love with every single one of them. I finish ’em all, and I don’t think there’s a whole lot of difference between the bad ones and the good ones. But every now and then you hit something that you really like a lot. Every now and then you’ll nail one that’s really, really special. And that’s what you live for.

“I’ve got a ballad on the new album called ‘Finding Out,’ where I really nailed the lyric,” he said of the song. “So that’s real good. The whole process is a lot of fun. When I have time to do it.”

Seger postponed the remaining 19 dates on his Runaway Train tour last fall “upon receiving his doctor’s orders to attend to an urgent medical issue concerning his vertebrae.”

"I'm feeling better all the time," the 72-year-old rocker tells Rolling Stone as he continues to recover at his rural Michigan estate. "They aren't letting me lift anything over five pounds. I can't do anything: no piano, no guitar, no nothing. But as soon as the pain stops, I'll be playing again."

Seger produced and released his eighteenth album, “I Knew You When”, last November.

VIDEO: Anthrax perform 1987 classic on Kings Among Scotland live DVD

Anthrax perform their 1987 classic, “Caught In A Mosh”, in the first video preview of their forthcoming live DVD, “Kings Among Scotland.”

The fan favorite from “Among The Living” is among those featured on the early 2017 tour that saw Anthrax deliver their third album in its entirety alongside a set a classic tracks selected by fans.

"It was a challenge for all of us to play 'Among The Living' live," admits drummer Charlie Benante. "We've played a number of that album's songs in our shows over the years, but not all of them, and playing a song in a recording studio is not the same as playing it live on stage. So we put in a lot of time to get all of the tracks down perfectly. And I'll tell you, after we finished that set, as arduous as it was, we all felt a sense of exhilaration, like we could go out and do it again."

Due April 27 and directed by Paul M. Green, “Kings Among Scotland” delivers the group’s February 2017 show at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom.

Fans will note that the set's artwork, created by Steve Thompson (Slayer, Motorhead, Iron Maiden), was inspired by KISS’ 1976 album, “Rock And Roll Over.”

Last month, guitarist Scott Ian published his new book, “Access All Areas: Stories From A Hard Rock Life.” The project sees the rocker recount his craziest rock stories as he shares tales of humor, excess, fun, debauchery, food, booze, and mayhem from his many years on the road.

Anthrax recently launched a co-headlining tour of North America with Killswitch Engage that will wrap up in early March.

VIDEO: U2 perform at the Grammy Awards

U2 performed their current single, “Get Out Of Your Own Way”, at the 60th annual Grammy Awards in New York on January 28, and video from the event is streaming online.

The band pre-recorded their performance of the tune from “Songs Of Experience” on a barge in the Hudson River on Friday evening, two days before the awards’ live broadcast from Madison Square Garden.

Bono and The Edge first appeared briefly during the Grammy’s opening number by Kendrick Lamar before returning at the end of the program to present the Record Of The Year honor to Bruno Mars for his “24K Magic” release.

Last month, “Songs Of Experience” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 to earn the group their eighth US chart-topper and first since 2009’s “No Line On The Horizon.”

U2 will begin a North American tour in support of the project in Tulsa, OK on May 2.

Rolling Stones win Grammy Award for blues covers album

The Rolling Stones won a Grammy Award in the Best Traditional Blues Album category for their 2016 covers record, “Blue & Lonesome”, at the 60th annual Grammy Awards in New York on January 28.

Recorded over three days in December 2015 at British Grove Studios in West London, the band’s first studio album in over a decade features a pair of guest appearances by Eric Clapton and updated versions of tunes originally recorded by blues legends Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Magic Sam, among others.

The group played live in the studio without overdubs and were joined on two tunes by Clapton, who happened to be in the next studio making his own record.

“Blue & Lonesome” debuted at No. 1 in both the UK and Australia while snagging a No. 4 entry on the US Billboard 200.

Mick Jagger confirmed last year that The Rolling Stones are working on new music, which would represent their first project of new songs since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.”

Last month, the band released “On Air”, a collection of live recordings of the group between 1963 to 1965 from a variety of BBC shows from the era.

Clutch complete sessions for new album

Clutch have completed recording sessions for their forthcoming twelfth studio album.

The Maryland outfit have been working on the follow-up to 2015’s “Psychic Warfare” with producer/engineer Vance Powell at Sputnik Sound studios in Nashville, TN.

"So, an hour or so ago, we wrapped tracking the new @clutchofficial record,” tweeted Powell on January 27. “I can't wait for you all to hear it. But unfortunately, you'll have to."

Clutch frontman Neil Fallon followed Powell’s tweet with one of his own, which features the singer’s view from the studio’s vocal booth, writing: “This has been my front stoop for the past 3 weeks. We wrapped it up last night. Endless gratitude to @Vancalot for making this endeavor such a blast. This one’s a doozy.”

"They're my favorite songs," guitarist Tim Sult recently told The Advocate about the project. "At this point, we probably have more songs than we've ever had before going into the studio. The material is a little heavier. It has a more doomed-out vibe and feel. We're going to record more live.

"It's our first time recording in Nashville. Who knows? We might end up with something that sounds like a Garth Brooks album."

Details regarding the project’s release will follow in the coming months.

“Psychic Warfare” debuted at No. 11 on the US Billboard 200 upon its release in October of 2015.

Clutch are scheduled to begin their 2018 live dates at the Las Rageous 2018 Festival in Las Vegas, NV on April 20; other confirmed festival appearances include Welcome To Rockville in Jacksonville, FL, the Carolina Rebellion in Charlotte, NC and Pryor, OK’s Rocklahoma this spring.

Foo Fighters win Grammy Award for Best Rock Song

The Foo Fighters’ 2017 single, “Run”, was named the winner in the Best Rock Song category at the 60th annual Grammy Awards in New York on January 28.

The lead single from “Concrete And Gold” took top honor over tracks by Metallica, K. Flay, Nothing More and Avenged Sevenfold.

Mastodon win Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance

Mastodon were named winners in the Best Metal Performance category for their “Emperor Of Sand” track, “Sultan’s Curse”, at the 60th annual Grammy Awards in New York on January 28.

The band took home their first Grammy honor ahead of fellow nominees August Burns Red, Body Count, Code Orange and Meshuggah.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor said backstage that the award is "huge for us and for heavy metal. It's one of the greatest genres with some of the most talented and skilled musicians playing it."

Dailor also credited Atlanta fans for the band's 18 years of success.

"Our first show had hundreds of people,” he added, “and they came out to support us from the time we were playing the Parasite House to the Fox Theatre.”

Recorded with producer Brendan O’Brien at the Quarry in Kennesaw, GA, “Emperor Of Sand” debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 last spring, marking the group’s third US Top 10 following 2014's "Once More 'Round The Sun" (No. 6) and 2011's "The Hunter" (No. 10).

Mastodon’s second 2018 nomination in the Best Rock Album category saw the group lose out to The War On Drugs and their 2017 release, “A Deeper Understanding.”

Mastodon return to live action in March when they play a series of shows in Australia.

Eddie Van Halen files lawsuit over scrapped 2006 documentary

Eddie Van Halen has filed a lawsuit against a videographer over his attempted release of a scrapped 2006 Van Halen documentary.

According to TMZ, the guitarist hired videographer Andrew Bennett to film music rehearsals with his son, Wolfgang, and his brother, Alex Van Halen, in 2006 for a possible DVD or video release; the sessions took place prior to the 2007 return of the band’s original vocalist David Lee Roth.

After Van Halen shut down the project, TMZ notes that the videographer threatened to release it years later after claiming he was never paid but, according to court documents, the rocker secured the ownership rights to the material as part of a 2015 settlement over the issue.

According to the new lawsuit, Bennett is now trying to sell the material and has released a trailer via his web site 5150vault.com. Although Van Halen got the site suspended for copyright infringement, Bennett launched another one with a similar name which is linking to a preview video of the music rehearsals.

Van Halen is seeking the court’s assistance in the removal of the video material from online while preventing Bennett from releasing or selling footage, with additional compensation for damages.

Earlier this month, bassist Michael Anthony confirmed his participation in a new documentary about his former band; few details about the production are known at this time, including the possible involvement of other past and current Van Halen members as 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the group’s groundbreaking self-titled debut album.
