VIDEO: The Rolling Stones headline Glastonbury

The Rolling Stones headlined the Glastonbury festival for the first time on Saturday night.

"It was 43 years in the making, 50 years for them, and we've finally come together. We're on the same page at last," promoter Michael Eavis told The Guardian.

The capacity of the Pyramid stage area was expanded for the first time for the Stones, meaning a festival record of 100,000 saw the band perform their classics, starting with an energetic “Jumpin' Jack Flash” and ending with a soulful “You Can't Always Get What You Want,” before the crowd-pleasing “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

The BBC broadcast the second hour of the band’s headline set; a BBC Two spokesman said its coverage of the Stones peaked at 2.5 million viewers, compared with the peak of 2.2 million for Coldplay who headlined in the Saturday slot at the last Glastonbury festival in 2011.

Up next, The Stones will play London’s Hyde Park on July 6 and 13.

Rush meet the Stanley Cup in Chicago

Rush were joined by a special guest backstage in Chicago Friday night: the Stanley Cup.

The Canadian rockers were in town as part of the current North American leg of the Clockwork Angels tour, home of the new NHL champion Chicago Blackhawks.

“So this we've had a lot of thing backstage but...this was awesome,” posted the band.

The Blackhawks beat the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals to win hockey’s most cherished prize.

Jambase reports bassist Geddy Lee introduced "Lord Stanley and his cup" as a small road case was wheeled on to stage towards the end of Rush's main set. Two roadies opened the case to reveal a miniature Stanley Cup leading the crowd to wonder if they were being punked before Chicago Blackhawks winger Daniel Carcillo brought out the real Stanley Cup to massive applause.

Carcillo hoisted the cup proudly and brought the trophy around to each member of the band, with Neil Peart using his opportunity to drum on the bottom of the cup. The crowd went wild as the Stanley Cup was repeatedly hoisted. Once Carcillo and the trophy left the stage, Rush finished their set with "YYZ" and "The Spirit Of Radio."

Original Black Sabbath drummer to unveil drum art project

Original Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward is set to debut a groundbreaking collection of fine art created from rhythm.

A new medium in fine art — rhythm on canvas — Ward will unveil his work on August 1.

To learn more and see the collection before the release, visit BillWardDrumArt.com.

Ward has provided few details at this point, but the project sounds reminiscent of one debuted by Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen earlier this year.

Allen unveiled his fine-art collection, "Electric Hand: Rhythm + Change," when the band was settling in for their "VIVA! Hysteria" spring residency in Las Vegas.

Check out details about Allen’s project here and here.

As for Ward, he declined to participate in the Black Sabbath reunion tour and album “13,” over a contractual dispute. The group recorded with Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, while Ozzy Osbourne’s solo drummer, Tommy Clufetos, has been handling live dates.

Rolling Stones look forward to playing Glastonbury festival

The Rolling Stones will play the Glastonbury festival for the first time when they headline the Pyramid Stage this Saturday night.

Glastonbury is billed as the largest music festival in the world, attended by 175,000 people.

“It’s almost as if you were like, finally, destined to play Glastonbury,” says Keith Richards. “There were many years when we were offered it and turned it down. I look upon it as a culmination of our British heritage. It had to be one and it’s gonna be done and we’ll see what happens.”

For Mick Jagger, the event is both a homecoming and a family affair.

“All my kids are gonna be there so I’m gonna be visiting them in the days before the actual show, and they’ve got all kinds of activities set up for me to do,” he says. “And my brother, also, who lives there, actually in Glastonbury.”

Following their festival appearance, the Stones will play London’s Hyde Park on July 6 and 13.

Steven Tyler talks solo album and new Aerosmith music

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler recently revealed plans to work on his first solo album in the new year, and now he’s sharing a few more details about the project.

"I'm just doing a solo record 'cause I think it's kinky to go write a song with Johnny Depp," Tyler tells Billboard. “I think it's ridiculous to go write a bunch of songs I started five years ago and never finished. It feeds my passion. I like traveling all over the place and writing songs and seeing what we catch. It's kind of like driftnetting for songs, right. But, no, the band's not breaking up. Me doing a solo record doesn't mean the band isn't working on a record -- but I get that in the press one has to hear that from one lead singer of one Aerosmith."

The group has summer and early fall dates booked in the U.S., Japan, South America and Mexico, while Tyler says "everyone is collecting their marbles" to start working on new material and predicts "we're gonna be working on the new Aerosmith record" in the near future.

In the past month, Tyler and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame – you can watch the Hollywood Bowl performance here.

Iron Maiden: London concert sells out in 12 minutes, second show added

Iron Maiden’s August 3rd concert at London’s O2 Arena sold out in just 12 minutes on Friday, so the band has added a second show on Sunday, August 4.

The dates mark the end of the band’s current Maiden England European tour as well as their last UK shows this year.

“We’ve all been having such a fantastic time on this tour,” says Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson. “From the very first show in North America last year to the European dates we are doing now, it’s just been tremendous fun. Our fans have been brilliant as usual, and seem to be loving the set-list and the stage production! So we thought that because this tour has been such an amazing experience for band and fans alike, it somehow seems right to finish up back home in England and have the final show celebration on home-turf. And now instead of one night’s celebration back home we get to have two!!”

In an effort to ensure fans get fair and proper access to tickets and do not pay over the actual ticket price through scalpers or second-hand brokers, the band have announced the London shows will be totally ticketless (paperless) ticketing using the latest technology.

“We are all very pleased to see the first show sell out in such a short time so we can now round off this part of the tour back home and celebrate for two nights instead of one,” adds band manager Rod Smallwood. “I am certain that both nights will be memorable. We used Ticketless (Paperless) Ticketing on our North American Tours in 2010 and 2012 and it worked extremely well and we received many positive comments back from our fans. With Ticketless (Paperless) Ticketing, only those who actually pay initially for the tickets will get into the show so scalping is generally avoided. We are also doing everything we can to avoid any drain of tickets going to the Secondary Ticketing sites which we feel make unfair profits from music fans and often lessen the number of tickets available to these real fans, especially at the on sale.”

Following the O2 dates, Iron Maiden will take a short break before playing North America, then Latin American stadiums and the Rock In Rio festival in September, and will finish the tour off with a return to the Estadio Nacional in Chile on October 2.

Pandora responds to Pink Floyd over royalty dispute

Pandora is disputing claims made this week by Pink Floyd regarding the company’s efforts to reduce artist royalties from internet radio.

USA Today published an op-ed piece written by the iconic band that suggested Pandora was trying to convince the US Congress to lower artist royalties by 85% while simultaneously asking artists for their support…read more about it here.

“We have enormous respect for the members of Pink Floyd, and their amazing artistic contributions,” began a statement from Pandora published by Business Insider. “We also respect the genuineness of their opinion.”

“Unfortunately, they have been given badly misleading information – the result of a well-orchestrated campaign by the RIAA and their lobbying arm to mislead and agitate artists.

“A glaring example is the assertion that Pandora supports an ‘85% artist pay cut.’ That is simply not true.

“We never, nor would we ever, support such a thing. In fact, Pandora has suggested solutions that would guarantee no reduction in artist payouts while also nurturing the growth of internet radio -- a medium that is crucial to thousands of independent musicians who don’t enjoy major label support or FM radio exposure.

“This much is true: Pandora is by far the highest paying form of radio in the world and proudly pays both songwriters and performers.

“For perspective, to reach the exact same audience, Pandora currently pays over 4.5 times more in total royalties than broadcast radio for the same song. In fact, at only 7% of U.S. radio listening, Pandora pays more in performance royalties than any other form of radio.”

Stay tuned.

Guns N’ Roses guitarist says electronic cigarettes almost killed him

Guns N’ Roses guitarist DJ Ashba says electronic cigarettes almost killed him.

Ashba revealed the news after posting an instagram photo (above) of himself smoking, which prompted a fan to inquire about his health status.

"I did quit [cigarettes] for 9 months,” replied the guitarist. “However, I was smoking fake cigarettes that I bought in a mall in Poland which contained high doses of nicotine and antifreeze, which kills people.”

"Nobody knows this,” continued Ashba, “but I was rushed to the hospital put on heart monitors and I had eight of the best doctors trying to save my life. Poison control confirmed that the nicotine intake that was going into my body from the fake cigarettes was equivalent to smoking 33 packs of cigarettes a day. After doing a full body CAT scan, the doctors were amazed that every organ in my body was in perfect condition. They advised me to start smoking real cigarettes because my body would go into shock if I just stop smoking, so now I can wean myself off of real cigarettes and hopefully quit for good this time."

"We purposely kept this out of the press but that is the real story of why I am smoking right now,” he concluded.

Guns N’ Roses recently wrapped up a brief, 9-date series of US concerts with a headlining appearance on day 2 of the Governors Ball at Randall’s Island in New York.

The band is next scheduled to perform at Festival D’Été (Quebec City Summer Festival) in Québec City on July 12th.

The festival, which runs July 4–14, is billed as Canada’s biggest outdoor artistic event. Other acts playing during the 11-day event include Rush, Def Leppard, Foreigner and the Black Keys.

Full details about the festival can be found here.

Black Sabbath: Tony Iommi unveils new guitar straps

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has unveiled a new guitar strap for the band’s 2013 world tour in support of “13.”

The straps, which feature a cross an skulls motif, are designed by Shirts & Destroy and made by Rachael at Heavy Leather NYC.

“The guitars I use are pretty heavy and it makes a huge difference when you're playing a long show to have a comfortable strap,” said Iommi. “That they also look great is a real bonus!"

The Sabbath axeman recently donated his used guitar strings to Wear Your Music, an organization that turns used guitar strings into jewelry.

All profits made from the sale of Iommi's guitar strings will go to the Nordoff-Robbins music charity.

Rock Recycled Bracelets are hand-wrapped with sterling silver to create a one-of-a-kind bangle style bracelet. Each bracelet uses a different number and color of strings, depending on what is available at the time of purchase.
