VIDEO: Pearl Jam perform Van Halen classics in Hartford

Pearl Jam performed a pair of Van Halen classics during their concert at Hartford, Connecticut’s XL Center on Friday, and video from the show has surfaced.

On the road in support of their new No. 1 album, “Lightning Bolt”, the Seattle band’s return to Hartford brought a déjà vu vibe to frontman Eddie Vedder.

“The last time we played here, in 2010, we played a song and we said it was the only time we would ever play this song,” Vedder told the crowd. “And it was the only time we ever played this song. But as soon as we walked into the back room tonight…I was like, ‘This is where we played that song! And, for some reason, I just really need to play that song again!’ But before we play that song, he’s (points to lead guitarist Mike McCready) going to play this song.”

McCready launched into Eddie Van Halen’s classic solo, “Eruption”, before Pearl Jam kicked into “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”, both tracks featured on Van Halen’s 1978 self-titled debut album.

We’ve posted two different camera angles of the VH medley.

VIDEO: David Bowie classic covered in space by Chris Hadfield

The David Bowie classic, “Space Oddity,” has been covered in space by Commander Chris Hadfield aboard the International Space Station.

Hadfield posted a video of the song on Sunday, his last full day in orbit after five months serving as the first Canadian to command the station.

For his part, Bowie took notice of the clip, tweeting “Hallo Spaceboy…” after Hadfield posted his note about the video; the reply refers to the title of a 1995 song by Bowie (from “Outside”) that revisits Major Tom, the title character in “Space Oddity.”

While posting the space video, Hadfield thanked Canadian musician Emm Gryner, his son Evan Hadfield, music producer Joe Corcoran, and TV producer Andrew Tidby “for all their hard work.”

Hadfield is due to return to Earth on Monday aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

Van Halen classic covered by Adrenaline Mob on new EP

Adrenaline Mob have covered a Van Halen classic on their new EP, “Coverta.”

The band – which features drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold), Symphony X frontman Russell Allen, guitar virtuoso Mike Orlando (Sonic Stomp) and Disturbed bassist John Moyer – recorded Van Halen’s 1980 classic “Romeo Delight” for the project.

“Hugely influenced by Eddie Van Halen,” explains Orlando. “Every rock guitar player, I’m sure, will say the same thing. I got such a thrill doing guitar for this song: plugging in the Charvel and the cool Phase 90 into the Marshall, cranking it up and pretending you’re Eddie Van Halen, as I’ve done since I was a kid.”

Due March 12, “Coverta” also features versions of songs by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Heart, Rainbow, Dio, The Doors and Badlands.

"Covertá" track listing:

01. High Wire (Badlands)
02. Stand Up And Shout (Dio)
03. Break On Through (The Doors)
04. Romeo Delight (Van Halen)
05. Barracuda (Heart)
06. Kill The King (Rainbow)
07. The Lemon Song (Led Zeppelin)
08. The Mob Rules (Black Sabbath)

James Durbin issues lyric video for Santa Claus Is Back In Town

Last month, rocker James Durbin released a high-energy cover of Elvis Presley’s “Santa Claus Is Back in Town.”

Now, Durbin has issued a lyric video for the holiday-themed tune.

"One day while we were writing and recording the new record in Nashville, and we sat down with our producer James Michael and started jamming on this song,” explained Durbin. “We found this killer, Van Halen-esque punk hybrid sound, and decided to record.”

"Except for the background vocals, it's all one take, hence my cough and [drummer] Jeff Fabb's opening line, 'One take, come on,'”
adds James. “We just hope everyone has as much fun with the song as we did, and has a very Merry Christmas."

Durbin's sophomore album is due out on Wind-Up Records in May 2013.

Duff McKagan and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready rock Jimi Hendrix classics in Seattle

The Experience Music Project (EMP) in Seattle has launched a new exhibit entitled “Hear My Train a Comin’: Hendrix Hits London.”

In the mid-1960s, Jimi Hendrix wowed the swinging London scene for nine months—releasing three hit singles, a chart-topping debut album, and became the darling of the British music press—before returning home to dazzle audiences at the Monterey Pop Festival in California.

The new exhibit features lyrics, personal instruments, original photographs, outrageous outfits, and rare concert footage, while inviting viewers to discover how Hendrix achieved prominence across the pond.

On Saturday, EMP celebrated the exhibit’s opening with “Hear My Train a Comin’: The Concert.”

The event featured an all-star lineup of musical greats playing the songs of Jimi Hendrix, featuring Jimi's bandmate and friend Billy Cox, with special performances by guitarists Ian Moore, Ernie Isley (Isley Brothers), Eric Gales (Lauryn Hill), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Duff McKagan (Loaded), Brandi Carlile, Audley Freed (Sheryl Crow), Jeff Fielder (Sera Cahoone, Mark Lanegan), Barrett Martin (Walking Papers, Screaming Trees, Mad Season), and drummer Mike Musburger (Fastbacks, Posies).

Some video from Saturday’s event has surfaced, including footage of Duff McKagan and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready teaming up with drummer Barrett Martin on “Voodoo Child” and “Machine Gun,” the latter featuring singer Brandi Carlile.

VIDEO: Sammy Hagar rocks 65th birthday in Cabo

Sammy Hagar turned 65 last week and celebrated with his annual series of birthday shows in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Sammy rocked four shows at his Cabo Wabo Cantina, performing a different set each night that included guests like Chickenfoot bandmates Michael Anthony and Joe Satriani, Matt Sorum, Kenny Chesney, Billy Duffy of The Cult, Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, and Denny Carmassi of Montrose.

“Man, this is hand's down the best birthday bash yet!” wrote Hagar. “Hangin' at the beach with my family and friends, then my buddy [chef] Emeril [Legasse] cooked us an amazing dinner and we all headed to the Cabo Wabo where Kenny Chesney brought the whole band down and tore it up for 3 hours! The fans were so off the hook I just had to hit the stage and jam on a couple songs with Kenny -- and we even got Emeril on stage with us to sing back up on "I Can't Drive 55".

“I'm 65 today and RIGHT NOW - it doesn't get much better than this! Gettin' old ain't so bad but growin up's a bitch - ha!”

VIDEO: Preview Gary Moore’s tribute to Jimi Hendrix

“Blues For Jimi,” a new live package featuring Gary Moore performing Jimi Hendrix material, will be available on CD, DVD and Blu-ray on September 25.

Filmed at the London Hippodrome on October 25, 2007, “Blues For Jimi” captures a unique concert featuring Moore playing classic Hendrix tracks, including “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Hey Joe,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” and many more.

The concert was part of the launch for the Jimi Hendrix “Live At Monterey” program.

At the end of the night, Gary was joined by Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox of the Jimi Hendrix Experience for three tracks. The full line-up for this show was Gary Moore (guitar, vocals); Dave Bronze (bass); Darrin Mooney (drums) with Billy Cox (bass on tracks 9-11, and also vocals on the first two of those) and Mitch Mitchell (drums on tracks 9-11).

Both Gary Moore and Mitch Mitchell have passed since this concert took place, which makes the recording of this incredible night so special.

A preview clip of Moore performing Jimi’s blues classic, “Red House,” is now available.

VIDEO: Sammy Hagar debuts 4 Decades Of Rock show

Back in May, Sammy Hagar announced plans to test drive a new format for his 2013 live shows.

Billed as “4 Decades Of Rock,” Hagar’s plan is to mark 40 years since the release of the debut Montrose album by building an evening featuring highlights from his lengthy career.

Sammy & The Wabos would open the show, followed by The Other Half (including former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony); a Montrose tribute set would be next, and then the evening would wrap up with Chickenfoot.

“This is a prototype to the type of thing I want to take on the road next year,” said Hagar when announcing his plans, “so I promise it to be the party of a lifetime!”

Hagar’s September 1 show at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey's in Stateline, Nevada was the first event with the new format.

For the Montrose tribute set, Hagar was joined by the band’s Denny Carmassi and Bill Church, with Joe Satriani sitting in; Carmassi stuck around for the closing portion with Chickenfoot.
