Roger Waters issues year-end statement

Roger Waters has issued a statement as 2013 draws to a close.

The former Pink Floyd bassist reflects on the year past and the year ahead, specifically addressing political issues that are important to him.

Beyond that, Waters shared two pieces of big news this year: first, a 93-year old veteran solved the mystery of the wartime death of his father (read about it here); and, second, he’s working on his first rock album in more than two decades (details here).

Last month, Waters was among the performers at the 7th annual Stand Up For Heroes benefit as part of The New York Comedy Festival – watch his full set here.

Here’s Roger's year-end statement in full…

To all my friends, in fact to everyone, foe and friend.

Happy New Year!

We are all brothers and sisters in the family of man and we all deserve each others love and respect.

I have spent much of the holidays, take your pick which holiday, reading a remarkable book, “King Leopolds Ghost”. It tells the story of Leopold 11 of Belgium’s catastrophic colonization of the Congo in the late 19th century. It is an horrific read but serves us all well on a number of levels.

Firstly, it is a powerful indictment of colonialism, greed and un-regulated commerce. It would be easy to tut, tut, in disapproval of those bad old days, were it not disquietingly apparent that the rich and powerful are still much attached to the feathering of their own nests at any cost to others. (Chevron v The People of Ecuador) par example.
Secondly, there are heroes in this story, not least E.D. Morel, a humble cog in the machinery of shipping, who worked for a company in Liverpool England, discovered the calumny in the Congo through accounting, of all things, and devoted the rest of his life to exposing it. Then there is Sir Roger Casement, an Irish patriot and human rights activist who eventually gave his life for his part in the Irish republican struggle, on the gallows in Pentonville prison London in 1916.

So, here we stand, at the turning of one year into the next, looking back maybe at 2013, and wondering if there is anything to be done in 2014.

There is.

Firstly, we can learn from the examples of E.D. Morel and Roger Casement. We can admire their sacrifice, and give full voice to our admiration for contemporary whistle blowers. Daniel Ellsberg, Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning we salute you and all the others who have gone before you. The whistle blowers are our life line to the survival of democracy, the corrupt in government cover their tracks assiduously, without The Pentagon papers how would we have ever known that President Lyndon Johnson had repeatedly lied to congress? Without these brave men, who are not prepared to hide behind the “just following orders” line of defense, the studded, padlocked, iron door marked, “CLASSIFIED” could forever stand, impenetrable, between you the people, and the information that is your constitutional right.

Secondly, keep asking awkward questions.

Is there a Palestinian Mandela?
Is there such a man, languishing in some dark prison cell?
Equally, is there an Israeli F.W. De Klerk?

Why is the Government of The U.S.A. slowly but inexorably turning its back on Mistress Liberty and The rule of Law?

I won’t bang-on, the new year is a time for positive thoughts and looking forward.

However, to look back for just a moment, it has been exciting in 2013 to see so many good people organizing in the Universities and the Churches, in the temples and the bars, uniting across boundaries of faith and nationality in support of Universal Human Rights. I feel your spirit abroad in the land, abroad across the globe. We are a fledgling movement, a mere two hundred and fifty years old, and arraigned as we are against the forces of commerce, racism, bigotry, religious extremism and narrow self-interest, the fight will be long and hard.. As Winston Churchill famously said in November 1942, “This is not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

Let us make 2014 The End Of The Beginning.

Love
Roger

Allman Brothers Band announce 2014 Beacon Theatre shows

The Allman Brothers Band have announced their 2014 series of shows at New York’s Beacon Theatre.

Rolling Stone reports the group will begin a 10-show residency on March 7.

The run includes dates on March 7 - 8, March 11-12, March 14-15, March 18-19 and March 21-22.

Tickets go on sale January 10 at 10 a.m. ET.

Gregg Allman still digs playing the annual series of shows at the legendary New York venue, where they've performed more than 220 times since 1989.

“Spontaneous things still happen," he says. "Going through the motions would be a real bore. I know a band that plays the same songs in the same order, they even say the same shit at the same time every night. But, no, we’re all still real into it.”

"These last few years,” Gregg continues, “we do the Beacon and then we do one month on the road in the summertime and that’s about it. And then everybody goes off to their own respective solo bands. It's getting more seldom that we get together, you know? It makes you really look forward to it.”

The group will release two live albums and a DVD in 2014.

In February, the band’s Allman Brothers Recording Company label dips back into the archives with “Boston Common 8/17/71”, recorded the same year as “At Fillmore East”, and less than three months before Duane Allman’s death. "It is one of the few Duane Allman-era shows that no fan has heard or owns," the band said in a statement.

On February 18th, Epic/Legacy will release a two-CD set “Play All Night: Live at the Beacon Theatre 1992”, and “Live at Great Woods”, a live DVD from the band’s Massachusetts show in 1991.

VIDEO: Carlos Santana - 2013 Kennedy Center Honors tribute

Carlos Santana was among the recipients of the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors earlier this month in Washington, and video of the tribute to the guitarist is available.

Actor Harry Belafonte opened the Santana portion of the evening with a speech saluting the impact and legacy of the guitar legend.

The musical tribute started off with “Black Magic Woman” featuring Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello on guitar, followed by “Oye Como Va.”

Blues icon and 2012 Kennedy Center honoree Buddy Guy stepped up to deliver a performance of “Hoochie Coochie Man”, before Steve Winwood and Sheila E. played “Everybody’s Everything.”

Santana was honored alongside fellow 2013 recipients Billy Joel, Shirley MacLaine, Herbie Hancock and opera singer Martina Arroyo.

The annual honor is given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture.

Santana resumes his Las Vegas residency next month at The House Of Blues.

Fleetwood Mac bassist returns to stage following cancer treatments

Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie returned to stage Monday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for his first live performance since starting cancer treatments this fall.

The band’s last live date was October 25 in Helsinki, Finland as the group wrapped up a European tour.

In October, the band cancelled a 14-date tour of Australia and New Zealand following news of McVie’s diagnosis.

His former wife and ex-bandmate Christine McVie shared news of the bassist’s progress last month, telling UK newspaper The Guardian that John’s prognosis was "really good. He's having his treatment in LA right now, but they caught it really early so he should be up and running in a couple of months."

Fleetwood Mac will play the MGM Grand again on New Year’s Eve for an invite-only show.

Earlier this year, the band released the 4-song “Extended Play”, their first new music in 10 years.

Queen guitarist reveals health scare

Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed a recent health scare as he processes the news during the holiday season.

Having successfully undergone knee replacement surgery earlier this year, May was experiencing various pains this fall and hooked up with his doctor a couple of weeks ago for a check-up.

According to May, MRI scans “showed up all kinds of mechanical disc and vertebra problems that might be the cause of the pain, but there were also some abnormalities in the bones - things that the report said needed urgent attention. So around Christmas I've been having a succession of blood tests, ultrasounds, and various kinds of scans, to see if they could rule out various kinds of cancer.”

“Now, on hearing the ‘C’ word something happens inside you … of course,” posted May on his website. “I've seen so many of my dear friends fighting it … and my Dad lost his battle at age 66, exactly the age I am now. So over the last few days I've been in various states of unrest.”

“Well, rephrasing slightly, the REALLY great thing is that so far the tests have eliminated a lot of nasty things,” the guitarist wrote on Saturday. “My PET scan was today, and it felt pretty grim in there. But a few hours later I got a text from my specialist saying that he hadn't found any evidence of cancers in the tests so far. I have one more scan on Monday, but I'm beginning to feel cautiously optimistic.”

On Monday, May issued an update while thanking fans for their support.

“I've been overwhelmed by the amazing messages you've been sending me, folks, since I wrote about my 'Health Scare',” he wrote. “It's taken me by surprise - for many reasons. I really didn't realise how much you guys were gunning for me … it's great to know that, and I can't thank you enough. It puts a smile on my face. But I didn't realise that biting the bullet and mentioning the "C" word would unlock such an avalanche. I now realise that so any of you have been wrestling with this all along, personally, or in family or friends, and, like me, found it hard to share.”

“I'm going for another scan tomorrow [30 Dec] early, so I'll know more soon. Like I said, my specialist has given me permission to be optimistic!”

U2 to receive Sonny Bono Visionary Award

U2 will be honored with the Sonny Bono Visionary Award at the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) this weekend.

The band will receive the honor at the event’s Awards Gala on Saturday, January 4 at the Palm Springs Convention Center; the Festival runs January 3-13.

“We normally present the Sonny Bono Visionary Award to a director, but for our 25th anniversary we wanted to take the occasion to celebrate U2, a visionary group and the world’s premier rock band, for their unparalleled humanitarian work against extreme poverty, disease, and social injustice,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “Their latest song ‘Ordinary Love’ from the film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom is an ode to Nelson Mandela, who had such a powerful impact on our world, and a man whom the band worked with in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. The Palm Springs International Film Festival is honored to present the 2014 Sonny Bono Visionary Award to U2.”

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom chronicles the inspirational life of Nelson Mandela as an international icon and one of the world’s most revered leaders. The film spans Mandela’s exceptional life journey from his early years as a herd boy in South Africa’s rural Cape region, to his days as a lawyer and Apartheid resistance leader, and on to his twenty-seven years spent in Robben Island prison before becoming the nation’s first democratically elected President. Acclaimed actor Idris Elba stars, with Naomie Harris playing the role of his wife Winnie Mandela.

The song “Ordinary Love” from the film was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Original Song category for a Motion Picture, as well as a nominee for Best Song from the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Critics Choice Movie Awards.

U2 have been working on a new album which is expected to be released in the spring of 2014.
