KISS fan donates Gene Simmons bass to Smithsonian

A Charleston, South Carolina KISS fan has donated a signed Gene Simmons bass from his collection to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

The Post And Courier reports KISS fan John Downs was inspired to make the gesture after learning that Eddie Van Halen had donated one of his signature guitars to the Smithsonian in 2011.

Downs, who has purchased 15 of his idol's instruments over the years, contacted Eric W. Jentsch, deputy curator for the Smithsonian's National Museum Of American History to inquire about a donation.

“We don't just want to collect the highest-end guitar. We want to show the American experience with the guitar,” said Jentsch. “We like to tell broad stories, and Gene Simmons is a story unto himself.”

After getting Simmons to sign a dedication note to the Smithsonian on the bass, Downs sent it off to Washington. He received a letter in return, lauding Simmons' use of “creative vision and entrepreneurial acumen to make a significant impact for our nation's popular culture, becoming an iconic figure in American music and entertainment.”

Downs presented a framed version of the Smithsonian letter to Simmons during the band’s recent Kiss Kruise III before a crowd of 1,500 fans.

KISS are among the nominees for the 2014 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

The New York band are nominated along with Deep Purple, Yes, Nirvana, Hall & Oates, The Replacements, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Peter Gabriel, LL Cool J, N.W.A., Link Wray, the Meters, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, and the Zombies.

The inductees are expected to be revealed in December.

Queen discover more unreleased Freddie Mercury material

Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed the band have discovered more unreleased Freddie Mercury material in their vaults.

"There's more in there than we thought, in the Queen source archive," May recently told Mojo magazine via The Guardian. "I'm a little nervous of saying there's an album there, but there's certainly a few tracks ... We've found some Freddie vocals, some demos."

The guitarist compared the project to Queen's 1995 album “Made In Heaven”, released four years after Mercury's death due to complications from AIDS. As with those tracks, Queen are taking Mercury's unused takes, cleaning them up, and adding original music. "If we find an analogue 24-track of Freddie singing something that never got finished, the first thing we do is ... make [a digital] copy at the highest resolution you can," May said. "Then we start weaving our tapestry."

The latest news follows confirmation by May, this past summer, that three duets recorded by Mercury and Michael Jackson will see the light of day. The demos were recorded in 1983 at Jackson's home studio, but a larger project never came to fruition due to the singers' conflicting schedules.

Queen recently released a limited-edition 6 DVD box set that features four concerts, including “Live At Wembley Stadium – 25th Anniversary Edition”, “Queen Rock Montreal”, “On Fire: Live At The Bowl”, and “Live In Rio.”

Exclusive to this package, “Live In Rio” features the band performing at the “Rock In Rio” festival in January 1985 in front of 250,000 fans.

AUDIO: David Lee Roth updates status of new Van Halen album

During a recent interview on SiriusXM, David Lee Roth revealed that Van Halen are in the early stages of working on a new album, and audio of the session is available.

"I was up at (guitarist) Edward (Van Halen)'s house, maybe three days ago - just before I came here to the city - and we're starting to put music together,” Roth told Ozzy’s Boneyard host Jim Florentine. “Not to give away exactly what the package will be, it's gonna be about 18 months, I think.”

“We start way, way, way in advance, 'cause we are eminently art-centric, which is a really fancy way of saying we really do generate all the artwork, the graphics, etc.,” he continued. “We don't hire out and have somebody design a bunch of album covers for us and then choose.... we start from scratch ourselves. Same thing with the merchandise - if you buy a t-shirt, that was designed, literally, in my living room. On and on... stage design, lighting rig, putting the show together - it takes about a year and a half, 18 months, because any idea that you have is 85 phone calls. Anybody can go, 'I got an idea, it's a stage that's shaped like, uh, like a square on top of a circle'. Great, my question never was, 'were you able to dream up a stage design', my question is, 'are you prepared to do the 87 phone calls that are about to follow now, to make sure it came out the way we decided'. And then there's another 80 phone calls that are gonna follow that because we have to figure out how to take the thing apart and put it in the trucks and buses. And, and, and. So if you really want to generate the ideas from scratch and bring them all the way to the finish, you're gonna have to learn a few other languages, and you're gonna have to speak those over a lot of extra phone calls. And that's usually the break point for most artists.”

Roth also explained that the band are active while away from the road and the media spotlight.

"Oh, yeah, we're writing,” he says. “I write lyrics routinely. It's a perishable skill. And the band plays together routinely, at least three times a week. They’re up at Ed’s place, routinely.”

Van Halen wrapped up their “A Different Kind Of Truth” tour in July.

The band's latest album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with opening week sales of 187,000. “A Different Kind Of Truth” was denied a No. 1 entry when Adele’s smash “21” record enjoyed a massive sales bump due to the 2012 Grammy Awards, where she swept her 6 categories and doubled her sales from a week earlier to retain top spot.

Megadeth to headline Sweden’s Skogsröjet festival

Megadeth will headline the Skogsröjet Festival in Rejmyre, Sweden on August 1, 2014.

Also on the bill are Gamma Ray, Unisonic, Quireboys and many others.

Megadeth recently launched their Super Collider US tour with Fear Factory and Nonpoint.

The band have been on the road since the late spring release of their new album, “Super Collider.” The project debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 album chart in June with opening week sales of 29,000 copies.

Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger visits set of James Brown movie

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger recently paid a visit to the set of the new James Brown film, “Get On Up”, currently filming in Natchez, Mississippi.

The Natchez Democrat reports Jagger, an executive producer on the project, was seen around town and on the set.

“We walked out of the building together at one point, but I didn’t speak to him,” said Adams County District 1 Supervisor Mike Lazarus, an extra in a scene that was shot on November 21. “It was kind of interesting to see him eating lunch at the same table as Octavia Spencer two tables down from me.”

Directed by Tate Taylor, “Get On Up” features Chadwick Boseman (Jackie Robinson in “42”) starring as Brown; Spencer, Viola Davis, Dan Aykroyd, Nick Eversman and Craig Robinson are among the cast.

“Chad Boseman is amazing in the title role,” posted Jagger.

The film will portray Brown over a period of several decades, from his disadvantaged youth to his status as a bonafide music icon.

“It’s a great honour to be involved with a project as rich as the story of the legendary James Brown,” said Jagger earlier this when announcing the project. “He was a mesmerizing performer with a fascinating life.”

Jagger and The Rolling Stones recently released their new concert film, “Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live.”

The band were recorded at July’s historic Hyde Park shows, which saw the band play two concerts before a combined total of more than 100,000 fans.
